Chapter 29: Keeping it together

"We need to track down Peridot. We found her pod. We know she's out there somewhere. She came to Earth with a job to do and odds are, she's still gonna try to do it. That's why I've gathered you here." Garnet said in a serious voice as she, Pearl, Amethyst, Steven, and Y/n sat around a pile of Steven's clothes, folding each one.

"I thought it was for you guys to help me with this laundry!" Steven cheered.

"That too. The chore wheel idea you had fell apart fast." Garnet told, causing the group to look over at the wheel which had everyone's name crossed out and had Pearl's name in their place in her handwriting.

"Okay ... But did I need to wear my armour for this?" Y/n questioned as Pair beeped a few times.

"Yes." Garnet nodded, earning a sassy beep from Pair.

"Good one." Y/n commented.

"Humans should just stop wearing clothes, be a lot funnier." Amethyst told.

"Yeah ... I don't want to know what you dream about." Y/n snickered, earning a giggle from Garnet, Pearl, and Steven.

"Hey!" Amethyst whined, throwing a star t-shirt at Y/n.

"No! Not my stars!" Steven gasped, rescuing the star t-shirt.

Steven soon got a wide smile on his face as he turned to Garnet. "Hmm... This is a lot. I bet this folding would go faster if Ruby and Sapphire were here!"

"I'm sure they'd be glad to see you Steven. But I am not unfusing for laundry." Garnet told.

"Aww." Steven pouted, wanting to see Ruby, and Sapphire under better conditions than last time.

"Garnet, you don't think Peridot would come looking for us, do you?" Pearl asked as she continued folding the clothes neatly.

"We weren't her priority. She was sent here to do something in the Kindergarten." Garnet informed.

"Do you think she's still going to try to reactivate it?" Pearl questioned, hoping the answer was no.

"Mmm... If she gets it back up and running, the Injectors will turn back on." Garnet said, earning a confused hum from Steven.

"Injectors? You mean those virus looking syringes?" Y/n said.

"Yes ... If Peridot reactivates them, they'll pick up right where they left off, planting Gems in the crust of the Earth, where they'll incubate and suck the life right out of the ground, we can't let Peridot restart Gem production here, if we do, the entire planet will become..." Pearl told, worrying of the consequences.

"Janked." Garnet finished for her, earning a gasp from Amethyst.

"Garnet! That mouth!" Amethyst laughed.

"Don't worry, we'll stop her. C'mon, Crystal Gems." Garnet spoke with determination as she stood up and approached the warp pad.

Pearl and Amethyst followed suit while Y/n and Steven stayed at the pile of clothes. "What about me and Steven?" Y/n asked, not knowing he they were supposed to come with.

"Come on dudes! You two are Crystal Gems too!" Amethyst cheered.

Steven gasped as he ran towards the warp pad, Y/n joining him soon after as he made sure to grab his SMG that sat nearby.

"Garnet, are you sure we should bring Steven? This might be dangerous." Pearl asked, not bothered about Y/n as he was trained and in some very protective armour.

"Peridot's got nothing we can't handle." Garnet reassured, patting Steven on the head, giving him confidence.

Soon the warp pad chimed, sending the 5 figures towards their destination.

-----------------------------

"Well, nothing looks activated. In fact, it doesn't look like anything's budged since the last time we were here." Pearl commented as the three gems, and two humans investigated the kindergarten.

"You're right. But just because Peridot hasn't been here yet, it doesn't mean she won't come." Garnet shot back.

"Why don't we split up? Would be good to cover more ground." Y/n asked as he stayed next to Steven.

"Good idea." Garnet gave a thumbs up. "You, and Steven, Amethyst and Pearl." Garnet said, earning a groan from Amethyst as she had to team up with Pearl again.

"What about you?" Steven asked.

Garnet chuckled, adjusting her visor. "I'm never alone."

Y/n smiled, he learnt a bit about Garnet, and in turn, Ruby and Sapphire; It was amazing what they had. "Come on Steven, lets get searching." Y/n smiled as the boy saluted.

The two humans searched through a small part of the kindergarten, but end up finding Peridot as she was recording some sort of log.

"This is Peridot, updating status. Still stuck on this miserable planet... The fusion experiments are developing properly. A few have even emerged early-" Peridot documented, but cut it short with a screech as she noticed Y/n and Steven standing there.

"Hello." Y/n nodded.

"You!" Peridot stopped her fingers from creating a screen, and pointed at Y/n. "What are you?"

"I'm your friendly neighbourhood Y/n." He chuckled, earning a cheer from Steven.

"What's a Y/n?" Peridot questioned, but before she could get a response, Garnet shouted.

"Peridot!" Garnet yelled, running towards the green gem with Pearl and Amethyst in tow.

Peridot gasped, running away as the Crystal Gems chased after her. Y/n shot a few bullets from his SMG, hitting her in her bulky arms, causing smoke to come out.

"You're cornered now!" Pearl shouted as everyone cornered the poor green gem against a wall.

"Ah!" Peridot yelled as she suddenly started running up the wall.

"Hey! I can't do that!" Steven whined.

"Neither can she!" Pearl yelled, throwing her spear up towards Peridot, only for it to miss her.

"Ha! Missed!" Peridot giggled in victory.

Pearl's spear hits the leg of an Injector stuck on the wall and dissipates. The Injector then begins to collapse off the wall. Peridot sees the falling Injector and tries to flee, but the Injector hits her, and they crash onto the ground.

"Do you think she's okay?" Steven asked, concerned for the green gem.

No one responded as Peridot jumped out from the wreckage and started fleeing again.

"Ha! Nope!" Amethyst laughed as she wrapped her whip around Peridot's body, stopping her.

Peridot had another trick up her sleeve so he pressed her finger onto the whip, generating some electricity that shocked Amethyst.

"Ow!" Amethyst complained.

"Go ahead! Wreck this place, see if I care! I've already got what I needed – Ah!" Peridot yelled as Y/n started taking pop shots at the helicopter blades her hand had formed.

"Get back here!" Pearl shouted as her and Amethyst chased after the flying Peridot.

Y/n and Steven tried to join them, but were stopped by Garnet. "If Peridot's mission was to reactivate the Kindergarten, the injectors would be on. Look. They're not."

"Oh!" Steven gasped in surprise.

"So, should we find out what she was trying to do?" Y/n asked.

"Exactly, us three. Down here." Garnet commanded as she lifted up the fallen injector with ease, exposing a dark, and dingy hole that lead somewhere.

"Wow, you're brains and brawn." Y/n complimented as he raised his hand for a high-five.

Garnet chuckled at the metal human, gladly high fiving him. "Lets go."

Garnet held onto Steven as they slid down the hole with Y/n close behind.

"Is the strong part of you Ruby and the wise part of you Sapphire?" Steven asked with stars in his eyes.

"It's all of both. When two Gems combine, it creates something greater than the sum of their parts. That's why I'm so great." Garnet told with a smirk.

"What's it like being fused all the ti-" Y/n was about to ask, but stopped as they reached the bottom of the hole. "Its dark."

Y/n turned on the flashlight that came from his helmet, readying his SMG in case anything unsuspected came out.

"I don't know how but... this place is even creepier than the last time we were here." Steven commented as Garnet set him down. Looking around they noticed small pillar-like objects all over the room.

"Yes. There's something going on." Garnet said, slightly unnerved.

"The power's not on. What was Peridot doing?" Y/n asked as the three began investigating the control room.

"It looks like she pulled these out of the walls. Something strange." Garnet told, gesturing to the many rock pillars that were across the room.

A sudden noise is heard from one of the rock pillars, causing Y/n and Garnet to investigate. "What was that?" Y/n asked, aiming his gun at the pillar.

"I-is there something in there?" Steven asked as the three started to back away.

A strange creature then falls from the ceiling behind the pair, startling Steven. Garnet, Y/n and Steven turn around and see it to be an amalgam of a blue hand and a red foot. Garnet then picks up the creature.

"Woah." Steven said in awe as he looked at the weird creature that Garnet held.

"Guys ... We aren't alone." Y/n told as he was staring at the ceiling, causing the other two to follow his flashlight with their eyes, eventually seeing a bunch more of the weird monsters on the ceiling.

"What are they? AAHHH!" Steven yelled as the creature in Garnet's hand pounces onto Steven's face, and Garnet quickly poofs it. She then holds in her hand a pair of gem shards.

"It looks like ... gem shards stuck together." Y/n commented as he took a quick glance at the weird gem Garnet held, the realisation made Garnet gasp in horror. "Garnet?"

The pillar from before starts to crack, making Y/n and the others turn to look.

The dirt pillar bursts open and reveals a Cluster Gem inside. Four silhouettes, fused together at the waists and silently screaming, desperately try to pull themselves away from the fusion, but fail. With a final scream, the fusion glitches and turns into a Cluster Monster, in the form of a hand consisting of other hands. It shrieks and starts crawling towards Steven, Y/n, and Garnet. Garnet is rooted on the spot in fear, breathing agitatedly.

"Ah!" Steven shouts as a cluster limb jumps on him while the larger Cluster Gem grasps onto Garnet.

"Steven!" Y/n shouted, kicking the limb against the wall, poofing it.

Steven summons his shield to help defend against the others that have started attacking, Y/n manages to poof many of them with his SMG.

"These were Crystal Gems, shattered into pieces. They were buried together." Garnet teared up.

"Why aren't you moving?" Steven worried as Y/n and him continued to fight off the many gem monsters.

"They were forced together... They were forced to fuse! This is wrong! Uh, uh, I'm sorry. Aauugghhh!" Garnet began separating from the horrific revelation, causing Steven to become afraid.

"Garnet? What's happening? What's the matter?" Y/n said as he fired the rest of the bullets in the mag into a gem monster. "This isn't like you."

Upon hearing Y/n's words, Garnet regains composure and pushes back the Hand Cluster. Slowly regaining her form, Garnet grabs onto the Hand Cluster with her gauntlets and forcefully rips it apart, effectively poofing it. The cluster gem drops onto the floor and Garnet bubbles it.

"We did it!" Steven congratulated as all the gem clusters had been defeated. "Garnet?"

"So this is what Homeworld thinks of fusion!" Ruby hissed from Garnet's mouth.

"We couldn't have known they would do this..." Sapphire argued from within the fusion.

"This is where they've been. All the ones we couldn't find. They've been here the whole time!" Ruby snapped, the two counterparts obviously arguing.

"Rose couldn't have known." Sapphire suggested.

"This is punishment for the rebellion!" Ruby shot back.

"It's not our fault!" Sapphire told as she started to sob.

"Garnet." Y/n said, placing a hand on her shoulder in an attempt to comfort her.

Garnet quickly send the bubbled gem away, and turned to the two humans. "Y-Y/n ..." She stuttered, not really knowing what to say.

Before Y/n could respond, Amethyst and Pearl burst into the control room. "Yo, we're back." Amethyst said as Garnet re-summoned her visor.

"Garnet, we lost Peridot. Her fingers were too fast for us." Pearl told, but soon realised a limb cluster climbed up onto Amethyst. "What are these things?"

"Put them down!" Garnet yelled, causing everyone except for Y/n to jump. "We need to poof and bubble all of them. We can't let any escape."

-------------------------------------------------

Y/n walked out of the beach house, and looked over to the remaining intact arm of the temple. Garnet could be seen leaning against the thumb, seemingly deep in thought.

With a sigh, Y/n managed to jump up to the lower forearm thanks to the suit, and climbed up it to find Garnet alongside a dryer. "Garnet." Y/n said, taking his helmet off and placing it on the dryer. "Are you okay?"

"I wish you hadn't seen that." Garnet sighed.

"Its okay, honestly." Y/n told.

"Its not okay!" Garnet retorted.

"Why? What's wrong?" Y/n asked.

"What Homeworld did, taking the shards and parts of fallen gems and combining them, these gems weren't asked permission. Fusion is a choice; those Gems weren't given a choice. It isn't right; it isn't fusion!" Garnet ranted, still incredibly angry with what she had seen today.

Y/n nodded, turning his head over to the ocean. With a smile he looked back over to Garnet. "What's it like? Being a fusion." Y/n asked, curious to the experience the gems are able to achieve.

"You forget you were ever alone." Garnet starts, smiling at Y/n. "You know when you fuse, you don't feel like two people, you feel like one being. And your old names might as well be names for your left arm, and your right." She finished with Y/n nodding in understanding not long after.

"That sounds beautiful ... It sounds like you are fully united as one ... What happens when you split up? What happens to you?" Y/n wondered, getting more interested in the concept of fusion.

"I embody my – I mean, Ruby and Sapphire's love. I'll always exist in them, even if I split apart. But the strength of that love keeps me together, so I can stay Garnet for a very long time." Garnet smiled again.

"That's definitely quite the experience ..." Y/n started, moving closer so he could place a hand on Garnet's shoulder. "But just because you have each other, doesn't mean you don't need a shoulder to lean on; I might be new to the whole gem business, but if you even need someone to talk to, give me a shout." He finished, patting Garnet's shoulder.

"Y/n, I can't thank you enough for everything you've done ... And continue to do." Garnet told, quickly pulling Y/n into a hug.

"Hey, its no problem, honestly ... You guys seem to have a lot going on, I'm just helping you out." Y/n smiled as he returned the hug.

"Yes, but you don't have to ... You could've entered this timeline and stayed out of our problems; You didn't and I'm thankful for that." Garnet's smile somehow got wider as the two-stay connected within the hug.

Y/n hummed in response, gladly accepting the hug, though still surprised that it came from Garnet of all people. From when he had first met her, she didn't seem like the kind of person that would hug ... let alone talk.

A silence formed between them, it wasn't an awkward silence, but a welcomed one. However, it wouldn't last much longer as the warp pad chimed, revealing a small pudgy boy with some laundry, who immediately gasped at the sight.

---------------------------------------------

I don't think I'll write every episode that happens ... Probably just the main ones, along with a few fillers.

If you guys have any ideas let me know! And I can't remember if I said, but sometime in the future, probably at the end of season 2, I plan on revamping the first 10 chapters, nothing major but yeah.

Thanks for the support my dudes!
