epilogue

wooyoung san

"you've got the wrong door." san answered firmly, hostility and a hint of guilt on his face as he turned away the older aunty who'd tried to deliver him a pizza.

the confused woman frowned, her crestfallen features reaching san's weak heart slightly as she squinted at her receipt.

"this is the second time this month i've been delivered a pizza i didn't ask for." he muttered with a sigh, turning her away. "please don't come here again unless i actually order it." he recited, half wondering who would want pizza this early in the morning.

once she'd gone, he checked his watch, swearing under his breath when he saw the time. he probably should have left five minutes ago, if not for that time wasting company that seemed to be forever confused as to who ordered their pizzas.

stepping outside, cold february air caressed the exposed skin of san's face; the closest thing to an attentive touch he'd felt in months. he tipped his head back slightly, longing to savor the almost unfamiliar cordiality.

his lips tugged into a subtle smile, the amicable bliss coming uncharacteristically easily.

once he'd collected and reiterated the chilly sensations, he buried his chin back into the warmth of the fluffy ombré turtleneck sweater adorning his frame. pulling the sleeves over his hands habitually, san sighed contently, eyes crinkling at the breath vapour of his visible exaltation.

he had to admit, although the past couple of months had been difficult at first, they'd been oddly therapeutic. he got through each day knowing wooyoung was loving him, and managed to gather and rebuild what self worth he had left. even when he got lonely and dismal, pessimistic about their future; san knew deep down that he just had to wait a little longer.

so he proceeded with a skip in his step, heading to meet yeosang for an early morning coffee. the two had made up easily, san realising not to take the other's friendship for granted as he wasn't likely to find someone else who knew him so well and would put up with his persona.

it wasn't a long walk from his cosy apartment, the petite coffee shop a regular meeting point for the two and others at their college. san liked daegu - the city more peaceful than the buzzing city vibe of seoul he was used to. it suited him.

he flicked his black hair back with a jerk of his head, the unattended locks growing out and even touching the collar of his turtleneck gently, warming his neck. i need a haircut. he thought admittedly, the strands becoming bothersome.

yeosang agreed, and never failed to let san know whenever he saw him. except for today, as his friend uncharacteristically greeted him with an odd smile and made no comment on his hair when san pushed open the door of the coffee shop, a brief tingle from the dainty silver bell announcing his arrival.

"what's up with you?" san questioned suspiciously, sitting down hesitantly and narrowing his eyes at yeosang's unusual jittery demeanour.

"nothing!" his best friend answered too quickly, and san rolled his eyes.

"yeo, c'mon. we've been friends for years; i know you to well." he shut down the excuse while propping his chin on his hands and looking across at him expectantly.

"uh..." yeosang looked around dubiously as if searching for an answer. "you know hyunjae from my law class?"

san hummed in confirmation, not used to yeosang being this smiley or seemingly embarrassed; covering his mouth with the back of his hand.

"well, he finally asked me out!" the other exclaimed happily, and san smiled widely.

"that's great!" he responded earnestly, pushing down the nagging feeling of loneliness in his chest. "so you've finally moved on from your two year crush, huh?"

yeosang rolled his eyes, leaning back in his chair. "seonghwa made it clear he was straight. i never had a chance, anyway."

san pursed his lips sympathetically, a dead silence filling the air due the upbringing of past events neither were awfully ecstatic to talk about.

he cleared his throat semi-awkwardly, beckoning with eyes to the waiter behind the counter who he'd grown accustomed to upon their regular shindigs.

even san had to admit the boy was exceptionally attractive, and it wasn't uncommon to catch a schoolgirl ridiculously fawning over the humble male in his uniform on any day.

"the usual?" the waiter raised his dark brows charismatically, tucking away the notepad into the pocket adorning his name tag; 'younghoon'.

san smiled with an incline of his head, younghoon returning the smile before going to get san the coffee they indicated.

"i think he's into you." yeosang observed glumly, anticipating san's many times reiterated response to occurrences like this.

"he'll get over it." san shrugged, not planning on pursuing the idea any further. "you know i'm reserved."

yeosang cracked a laugh, managing to smile again as the two resumed their idle conversation and enjoyed each other's company.

after about forty minutes of really nothing that vital at topic, san decided it was about time he left the coffee shop, wanting to go home and complete his assignment.

"i should get going," he stated tiredly, not looking forward to the work he knew was waiting for him.

yeosang nodded with a glance to his phone screen, which san ignored and rose from their table, pushing his chair back in neatly so not to ruin the cute aesthetic of the familiar coffee shop.

he walked home in no hurry, dreading the effort his desk and its contents promised, eager to savour the cool breeze and fresh air.

but his apartment came into view sooner than he'd hoped, and he was opening its door in what felt like split seconds, hating the speed time seemed to whirl him along on.

much later, he was far from in a good mood, and the ringing of his doorbell penetrated his already throbbing head, causing him to bash his head on the desk a view times and kick his feet in annoyance.

gliding back aggressively on his wheely chair, san threw his pencil at the door, fed up with the constant miscommunications. "i told you already!" he shouted through the wood.

"i didn't order any fucking pizza!" getting up off the chair in a such a manor that it spun at his sudden absence, san flung upon his door, readying himself to give the delivery service a piece of his mind and perhaps threaten to sue, when-

"it's nice to see you, too." wooyoung.

it was wooyoung. wooyoung, wooyoung, wooyoung.

his brain screamed the same name over and over, his eyes widening in disbelief and jaw practically falling to the ground as he took in the sight of the male in front of him. the purple of wooyoung's hair dye had long since disappeared, the locks their natural black, wavy and cut a little shorter than san remembered. his honey skin shon under the light of golden hour he brought with him, his pink lips pulled into a playful smile while his eyes sparkled with the stars they held.

he was so different, yet exactly the same all at once, and san could not muster up the words to express everything going through his heart brain body and soul right at that moment.

wooyoung's wrist adorned a simple bangle, signifying where he'd come from and what he'd achieved. the other hand rested in his pocket lazily, everything about him devastatingly familiar and breathtakingly beautiful.

"h-how-" san managed to get out, eyelids fluttering as he remained glued to the spot.

"i got out of rehab yesterday." wooyoung explained with the smile san loved so much, stepping closer towards him. "yeosang told me where you lived."

san let out a breathy laugh, coming to his senses and barrelling himself into the other, throwing his arms around his neck and hugging him tightly. wooyoung stumbled with the force of the gesture, his arms going around san's middle and enclosing him tightly.

they remained pressed against one another, san unknowingly spilling a few tears onto wooyoung's back as he nuzzled closer to him, fastening his arms more securely with no intention of releasing him. he felt the other's shoulders shaking slightly, guessing the realisation of what he'd made it through to be where he was settling in, which only drove him to hug him tighter, wanting to crawl inside his skin and never let him go.

"did you miss me?" wooyoung eventually whispered by his ear, the cocky tone sounding more shaky than intended.

san laughed again, not loosening his group nor feeling the other boy's hold lessen. "i'm never letting you go." he replied seriously, blinking away tears of pure joy.

"can we go inside, though? it's kind of cold." wooyoung said after a moment, words muffed in the crook of san's neck.

he unwound his arms from the boy's neck, not entirely betraying his previous statement and latching their hands together instead as he backed into the apartment and pulled wooyoung inside after him, closing the door gently.

now facing each other neither knew was to say, having been apart for so long, but their feelings were written legibly on their open faces, neither wanting to hide any drop or their emotions or suppress any of their unspoken words.

wooyoung exhaled through his nose audibly, letting go of his his hand to place his hands behind san's neck, winding his fingers in the outgrown black locks.

"your hair grew." he stated simply, still regarding san's face almost hesitantly, unblinking.

"i know, it needs a cut." san mumbled embarrassedly, blushing slightly under the gaze he hadn't felt in so long. "i've been meaning to-"

"no." wooyoung cut him off huskily, stroking the skin of his neck gently with his fingers as he played with the hair. "i like it."

his breath caught in his throat, and san gathered up the courage to place his hands atop the other's shoulders, the material rough and cool beneath his soft warm touch. "why haven't you kissed me yet?" he asked almost shyly, unprepared for what he asked for.

"i don't know." wooyoung teased softly, vision taken up by the boy in front of him who saw the brightest starts in his eyes. "close your eyes."

san's eyelashes fluttered gently closed as he obliged, everything quiet besides their mingled breathing; the moment theirs.

he suddenly felt the feather touch of wooyoung's lips on his eyelid, kissing it gently before doing the same to the other one. "you're so beautiful." he felt him say closely in front of his lips, followed by the light brush of them on his own.

he gasped softly at the brief touch, keeping his eyes shut as he craned his neck instinctively forward to reiterate the touch, longing for more contact.

his wish was quickly granted, wooyoung similarly desperate to reinvent the connection they'd missed. when their lips met each other, slotted together perfectly as they were designed to be, it was like two fuses burnt out; two time bombs finally exploded.

there was fire. fireworks; every size and vibrant colour exploding gorgeously in the sky. they both felt it, and knowing they both did drove the kiss further, deeper, brighter, until they knew nothing else.

it lasted between bare seconds and infinity- it was a simple copy paste of every other kiss they'd had and it was like the first and the last and like nothing ever before all at once- strange yet so familiar.

when it ended, the fireworks didn't, both still dizzy and high of each other, unable to comprehend what just happened.

"don't leave me again." san whispered once he'd caught his breath, the words causing their lips to brush with each spoken once more.

wooyoung shook his head vigorously in agreement, still breathing unevenly as he placed his hands under san's thighs, lifting him up and setting him down on the desk.

work discarded and forgotten, he lowered his head to kiss him again, winding his legs securely around the other boy and cupping his face upwards for a more accessible angle.

"let me take you somewhere," wooyoung breathed between hungry kisses, san tugging the other's jacket off while his hands squeezed his thighs attentively.

"i'd rather stay here." san rejected, successfully removing the jacket and moving his hands under wooyoung's shirt to explore the skin there.

but the other caught his wrist, moving back a bit to break the kiss, much to san's disappointment and discontent. "we have all the time in the world for this." he said softly, biting his lip.

san pouted, shuffling back onto the desk and letting his legs fall, to which wooyoung laughed and ruffled his unruly hair affectionately.

"let's go somewhere." wooyoung repeated, grinning wistfully. "i want to take you to dinner."

"fine then," san let out an exaggerated sigh, pushing back his hair and swinging his legs over the edge in a little jump down. "where'r we going?"

"a walk first." wooyoung told him decidedly, shrugging his jacket back on and lacing his fingers with san's. "we can catch the sunset and see where that takes us."

san hummed in response, following wooyoung out again and looking his apartment door. once outside, he laid his head comfortably on the slightly shorter male's shoulder, staying close to him and quietly enjoying his presence.

gazing to the clouds, san realised he'd been working all day, now watching the sunset spread its largess into the grateful sky. rich hues of red blended with oranges, purples, crimsons. his spirit soared at the sight as he was transported into a timeless existence, ready for the protective blanket of night and new dreams with the boy next to him.

hand in hand, they strolled quietly for a while, not needing to say much. with true love san felt like the other's presence was the reason his life was suddenly more beautiful. everything came to life around him, the colours in the sky quivering with a new vibrancy he hadn't seen for a while.

glancing over to his companion, wooyoung's dark eyes reflected the fiery orange of the sky, exquisite flames dancing within the eager orbs, the dark lashes framing them casting artistic shadows on his cheeks.

"so how've you been?" san asked into the comfortable silence, talking so he wouldn't end up kissing wooyoung again (and again and again).

the other gave him a sidelong look, san gazing up at him interestedly. "it wasn't easy." he admitted, swinging their joined hands playfully. "but it was worth it."

san didn't press for details for now, simply nodding respectfully and giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "and how's..." he trailed off, not sure who he wanted to know about.

"everyone?" wooyoung finished for him, eyes locked ahead. "they came to visit a few times. hyunjin misses you loads, you know. you should call him."

"i will." san promised as they turned a corner, eyeing the roughly painted wall and the brickwork it revealed.

"mingi and yunho are still together," he continued informatively, eyeing the shop signs thoughtfully. "seonghwa's the same as ever, as is minho, although the latter talked to me about coming out only a week or two ago."

"good for him." san replied earnestly, hesitating before proceeding to ask, "and felix?"

"well he certainly didn't visit." wooyoung scoffed lightly, which didn't come a surprise to san. "but i heard he's doing fine."

san paused for a moment, not wanting to ruin the perfect evening. "you know what he did, right?"

wooyoung turned to look at him slowly, giving him a careful look. "i know." he confirmed, lowering his head to lay a kiss on san's forehead. "try not to hate him too much."

san was quiet, not having an answer to that. he didn't hate him. he was just disappointed.

"besides, it's my fault, anyway." wooyoung continued, stepping onto an empty sidewalk prettily decorated with fairy lights.

another silence followed the statement, as the two of them reflected on a subject neither particularly enjoyed. instead of saying anything more, san simply raised their interlocked hands, pressing a firm kiss to the other's knuckles assuringly.

wooyoung let slip a tender smile, caressing his hand with his thumb briefly. "you know i love you, right?" he asked smoothly, voice hitching as if afraid of the answer.

"yes, jung." san teased, turning to face him and joining their other two hands. "and you know that i love you."

wooyoung released their hands suddenly, finally finding the answer he'd been looking for. san furrowed his brows in confusion as the boy stepped back, taking a breath before reaching into his pocket hesitantly.

"what're you-" san began to ask, but stopped when the other unexpectedly got down on a knee in front of him, taking his hand and biting his lip nervously.

"are you proposing?!" san squeaked in surprise, covering his mouth and looking around worriedly.

wooyoung laughed in answer, shaking his head and presenting him with a simple silver ring, the shiny metal catching the light and glinting prettily. "not quite yet, little choi." he said suggestively in a affection tone.

"this is a promise ring." he explained, eyes suddenly big and clear and shining with love, displaying his raw emotions and vulnerable nervousness.

san covered his mouth, not sure if he was breathing or about to scream. he looked back at wooyoung, who'd never appeared this way to him before, with his face as easy to read as an open book.

"i want to love you forever." wooyoung told him timidly, slipping the ring onto san's waiting finger. "let's not leave each other again, alright?"

"alright." san repeated, eyes gleaming with adoration and glistening with tears. they both laughed in relief, wooyoung getting up from the floor and lifting san into a hug, neither caring who was watching or if anyone was.

of course san said yes. he couldn't imagine his life going forward without saying those words, and he had never felt more unstoppable. their love wasn't what you may call 'fate', but they were infinitely lucky to have found one another.

however flawed; their love was inevitable.
