Chapter Thirty-Two

It rained like hell the next day. Darkened clouds covered the sky above Graceland and it felt as if it was just a personal rainstorm for Elvis. Every now and then, a rainbow would appear but would soon be damned by the rain once again.

Elvis hadn't spoke or seen MaryJane since she broke his heart yesterday morning, and neither had anyone else. Red, Charlotte, Gladys, and Vernon had asked where she was. Unfortunately, he didn't know. Where she was, when she'd gone, who she was with was no longer his business. Hell, she could be on her way to Kevin's house right now and no one would know, which in his opinion, and probably his entire family's, was too dangerous to be kept a secret. But he prayed she didn't go back to him.

Elvis knew that it was best to move on, but he still had a place in his heart for MaryJane. Maybe between now and Christmas, things could change. Who knows?

When MaryJane did arrive home that night, it was nearly dusk and everyone but Elvis had gone to bed. He couldn't go to sleep knowing she could potentially be in danger.

He had heard the door open and he nearly flew to see her. Dark circles lined her eyes. Her hair was knotted. She looked exhausted.

"Where have you been?" He asked as she walked inside.

"That's for me to know."

She didn't even look at him once as she stumbled up the stairs. That's when Elvis noticed the stench of alcohol on her.

Of course, he didn't say anything. Everyone needs a little pick-me-up sometimes, so he just let it be.

For the rest of the week, if they saw each other, MaryJane gave him the stink eye and walked the other direction. When supper time came, her place at the dining room table was empty. Everyone asked and he didn't have an answer.

So he lied. "She was hired at a diner the other day."

Elvis could see the skeptical look on Red's face and became worried. But he knew everyone else believed it.

Two days later, Red confronted Elvis out in the front yard, even though it was freezing cold.

"I saw MaryJane last night," he started.

Elvis tried to act like it was no big thing but he knew Red could see right through his bullshit.

"I asked her about that diner and she didn't have any idea about what I was talking about," Red said, crossing his arms over his chest.

Elvis panicked and said, "She said she working at a bank, that's right."

Red chuckled. "She said she's not even working, Elvis."

Elvis remained silent because he knew he was caught.

"What's going on with y'all two, man?" Red asked with pure sincerity.

Elvis turned and headed for the door as he just mumbled the word, "Nothing."

Red caught his arm. "E, I just want to help."

So, Elvis took a deep breath and told him everything from the fights and the smell of alcohol and Red listened. It felt good to finally let his feelings out.

Red told him he would keep an eye on MaryJane but maybe it was time for Elvis to move on.

So, he did.

For the next few days, Elvis went out with other girls to try to keep his MaryJane off his mind. But that was damn near impossible.

No girl was perfect like MaryJane. Their eyes weren't a pretty brown like hers. Their hair was as long and silky as hers. Their lips weren't as full and bright as hers. No one was good enough.

He left in the middle of the dates sometimes because he couldn't stand being near another woman that wasn't MaryJane.

MaryJane was the only woman good enough for him.
