5- The routine

It became a routine for me to go to that abandoned place and read my usual books. And of course, Kenny also become part of that. He started waking up earlier and I stopped reading that much. And weirdly enough, we spent a lot of time chatting. I didn't mind, it was a nice break from the boring school stuff.

"What are you doing?" I asked not even looking back.

Kenny was hanging upside down besides me, slowly sliding down to the floor. I finally turned my head to face him and caught the exact moment his head bumped the floor.

"Ouch"

"Pffft-" I tried to hide a laughter but miserably failed. Instead of being offended, he laughed too rubbing the hurting spot. He sat correctly next to me.

"What was that?" I asked still trying to hide a smile.

"A failure..." He rubbed his head a bit more.

"Hmmm... Yes I could see"

"Changing topics, what are you reading today?" He got closer to look at my book. I backed away a bit embarrassed, regaining my personal space.

"I'm actually studying. I'm going to have a test today. History."

"Lucky you, my best subject is history."

"Really? What grades do you have?" I raised an eyebrow smirking. He didn't give me the vibes of a good student.

"Hey, it's my best subject, doesn't mean I'm the best at it."

"Yeah I bet"

"What is that supposed to mean?" He chuckled curious.

"Well..." I closed my book carefully. "Let's just say, you don't strike me as the smartest student in the class."

He gasped while making an exaggerated face. He then mouthed "really?" still in shock.

"Might not be the smartest but I have decent grades. I pass each year so I can't complain, ya know?" He went back to his chill attitude.

"Don't you get constantly annoyed by your parents because of it though?"

"Not really... No"

"Lucky. My parents annoy the shit out of me if I bring home an A-"

"Ahah, strict parents, couldn't be me"

"How are your parents?" I looked to his eyes that faced the floor lost in thought.

"They are normal... Normal parents I guess"

The conversation died down after that, I quickly tried to change topics to avoid an awkward silence to settle.

"So, why are you tired all the time?"

"Tired? I'm fine" He looked confused.

"What I mean is why you sleep here. In the middle of the day- Do you even eat lunch?"

"Sometimes, when I get the chance to."

"What?!" I put my book down and went full on dad mode. "Did you eat today?"

"No"

"Why?!"

He just shrugged.

"Hold up" I grabbed my backpack and searched around my pockets.

"W-what are you doing?" He chuckled nervously. He leaned forward trying to understand what I was doing.

"Okay, it's not much but it's what I got" I took out a ham sandwich that I was saving for the next break. I held it out for him to pick it up. He hesitated.

"You don't need to... That's very kind but really, I'm not hungry." For the first time, he gave me a fake smile. He appeared to be very uncomfortable but I didn't care, his health was more important.

"Take it." I didn't move.

"Ahah, c'mon dude... Don't be like this." He pushed my hand away but I insisted.

"I'm not moving until you take it."

He sighed and finally took it. "There"

I kept staring at him while he held the sandwich.

"What?"

"Eat it."

He chuckled and shook his head. "Look, I appreciate it but don't worry. I'll eat at home ok?"

"I don't believe you."

"I... I don't know what to tell you. I'm not going to eat it now." He laughed and looked around at the dust floating in the air.

"Ugh fine... You better eat it! You hear me! And you better not come here starving again!" I looked deep into his eyes but he just laughed.

"You worry too much." He touched my head softly and gave me a few pats. I stayed quiet looking down.

"And you worry too little." I said under my breath looking away.

The bell rang soon enough and he got up. He grabbed his backpack from the back of the room and shoved the sandwich in it. After that, he stood in front of me and held out his hand.

"Thanks" I took his hand and he pushed me up.

"See ya." He left the room. Silence filled it instead.

"So weird..." I thought out loud.

The more I got to know him, the more I felt that I didn't know anything about him.

I headed to my next class, science. Entering the class, I looked around searching for an empty seat. Funny enough, it was next to Token. As I walked down the hall of tables, I whispered to myself smiling.

"Three... Two... One..." I sat down next to him. "Fight"

"I see we're feeling good today." Token smirked.

"Well, I just know we're going to receive the tests and I think we both know who's gonna have the best grade."

"Wow!" He laughed not believing my words. "Good and delusional!"

"Students! Quiet down!" The teacher shouted from the front, his voice nearly breaking.

The class went silent.

"I have brought your tests today-"

The students immediately went back to talking, some asking their grades, others groaning...

"SHUT UP!" The raspy voice screamed again.

Silence, again.

"I'll be saying your names and you come forward to get your tests. But I don't want to hear ANY NOISE!"

We all nodded and some replied with "yes, sir". The teacher then put his glasses and started calling random names. Me and Token waited patiently.

"Tweek Tweak"

Tweek got up and headed to the teacher slowly, shaking slightly. He was visibly nervous.

"Today if possible" The teacher gave him the test. Not even looking up he said "You could do better."

Token closed his fist with anger while I controlled myself not to answer.

Tweek was an anxious teen, he even took pills for it. Every time we had tests, presentations or received grades he would have little anxiety attacks. Normally, the teachers understood his situation and went easy on him, HOWEVER!! This old cretin always gave him a hard time and complained that "kids these days couldn't handle anything". It didn't help that he was homophobic and extremely conservative. I had a deep hatred for this man, I swore that if one day I saw him outside of school I would kick his face in.

Tweek's eyes trembled as his hands gently grabbed the papers. He turned around and sat back again in his seat. Thankfully, his boyfriend was there to comfort him.

A few more names were said and finally there were only two students left. Me and Token.

"Token Black"

Token puffed out his chest and breathed out, getting mentally ready. He got up, went to the teacher's table and picked up the papers.

"Very good work as always"

Token smiled and walked back with a proud expression. When he sat back down, he threw his test on the table and smirked.

"A, beat that"

"I will"

"Y/n L/n"

I gulped. I stood up, for moments it was like everyone in the class was looking at me. The pressure... I walked and looked at the teacher dead in the eye.

"Could be better"

I looked at the papers and let my heart sank... B+...

The grade itself wasn't bad but it being lower than Token was a problem. The fear of being ridiculed and made fun of filled my head. To fight the fear, anger came. I tightened the grip on the papers and sat back down.

"Ahah, got ya" Token chuckled.

"Yeah. You really did" I replied in a dry voice tone.

"Don't worry, you'll do better next time. That's already a great grade. I think we were the best in the class" He smiled trying to make me feel better. However, it just seemed to me that he was pitying me.

"I don't care" I replied not even looking at him.

"C'mon dude. I bet you'll beat me next time." He poked me with his elbow.

"If there even is a next time. Maybe I'll die before the next test. Maybe I'll have a fatal accident and I'll end up in a coma for the rest of my life"

"Okay then ..." He turned around to face the front of the class. No more words were spoken that class.

When the bell rang, Token started packing his books. I had swallowed my pride by then and sighed ready to do my least favourite thing.

"Hey, wait up..." I held on to the back of his jacket. He turned around quietly.

"Hum... Congrats on the grade, you deserve it"

"Aw thanks man" He smiled brightly.

"And... About what I said-"

"It's chill. Don't worry about it" He put his hand on my shoulder and smiled once again. That boy was like an angel. I liked that he forgave me right away when I lost my temper. Few could handle me and those who did, I swear they deserved a medal.

"You know what else is chill?" We headed outside towards the school entrance.

"My heart?" I rolled my eyes already expecting it.

"What? I mean, you said it, not me" He chuckled while innocently putting his hands up. "I was actually going to say the weather. I heard it's going to snow on Halloween."

"Oh..." I looked around embarrassed. "Halloween... When's that?"

"Next week"

"Already?" I looked at him shocked.

"Yeah man, where's your head?" He chuckled looking at my confusion.

"Time flies..." I sighed

"When you're having fun?"

"Yeah... I guess..." I thought about the past weeks. I was having more fun than usual going to that special room and chatting with that special boy. I just wanted lunch time to come so I could go there again and talk to him. Read my books! Go there again to read my books... He wasn't that special...
