The Door

Rating: G. Warnings: none

Jaisyn's door was closed.

Roxie stood outside, hesitantly looking the door up and down. The only rule Jaisyn had was to leave him alone when his door was closed, but she really really needed to tell him something and she couldn't tell Mummy and Daddy because they might get angry!

She hugged Firefly closer, gnawing nervously on his tail. Well, she could knock, couldn't she? Maybe he didn't want to be bothered earlier but now was okay and he just forgot to open the door?

After another five minutes, she softly, hesitantly knocked on the door twice.

"Jaisyn?" she asked quietly.

There was a shuffling behind the door.

"Roxie? Is that you?"

She nodded, even though she knew he couldn't see her through the door. "I just wanted to talk about something and I know I'm supposed to leave you alone when the door is closed but I can't tell anyone else because I'm afraid they'll be angry and–

"It's fine, Roxie." His voice was muffled through the door. "Come in."

When she opened the door she saw him lying on his bed with his face buried in his arms.

"Jaisyn?"

He looked up. "What is it, Roxie? Are you okay?"

She sat down on the floor, hugging Firefly close.

"Roxie?" he asked. Obviously nobody had done anything mean to her–if someone had, she'd be crying and she would have run straight to Maxie. She wouldn't be afraid of someone being angry because of that, anyway.

"Did you break something?" he asked.

Roxie quickly shook her head, her ponytail flailing out wildly behind her.

"What happened? Are you all right?"

She looked up, then over her shoulder to make sure no one was listening in. With wide eyes, she hugged Firefly closer and stage whispered; "I'm tone deaf."

An amused, relieved smile crossed Jaisyn's face and he stifled a laugh.

"It's not funny!" Roxie whined.

"I'm sorry," Jaisyn smiled, hiding his smile behind his arm for a moment. "Roxie," he chuckled, "it's okay. Your parents won't be angry because you're tone deaf."

Her shoulders relaxed a little. "You promise?" she asked nervously.

He smiled, reaching out and ruffling her hair. "I promise."
