Chapter 1

"Laura!" Mum shouts for the seventh time from down the stairs. "Your late, again."

"Sorry!" I shout as I frantically run down the stairs. "I was packing my bag...again."

"Remember I will be home at eight, so you will have to warm up a pizza in the oven and don't wait for me." Mum says as she stuffs her phone, her keys and her wallet into her dark brown hand bag.

"You are working a late shift again?" I say and put on my dark blue hoodie and my black jacket.

"Yes, I need the extra money and you know that." She says and looks into my eyes with a big smile.

Her eyes are deep green unlike mine which are clear blue. She puts her blond curly hair up into a big bun and grabs her brown leather jacket. I always wished I had her long beautiful hair. But sadly, I never inherited that gene instead I'm stuck with my brown straight hair. In other words, my mum and I are two different people.

"It's hard, I know it is. But we can really use this money." She says with a smile as she puts her soft hand on my cheek.

"You say that every time but what is the money for?" I ask once again realising I ask the same very question every time she tells me she says she will be working late.

She takes a deep breath and smiles. "Once the time comes you won't regret any late shifts." She says but I know she is only telling me a small part of the real truth.

"What is the time now again?" I ask grabbing my black leather bag.

"Late." She says and gives me a friendly nudge addressing me to go outside towards the car.

As we walk outside I turn back to see our worn out little white house. I've lived here since I was born. The house is small, but it means a lot to my mum and me. We have a lot of memories here together, just the two of us.

"Come on kiddo!" Mum says as she opens the car door for me from within the car. "We are already late, but I don't want you to miss the first class completely. It's only two days left till summer break."

I turn around and run to the car. As I get into the car I smash the door close and look at Mum. She gives me a smile and I give her one back.

"I know you don't like it when I ask you this question but when will I meet dad?" I ask, and I can see she is irritated. She turns on the car and gives me one look.

"Like I said before he will show up when he wants too." She says, and the car starts to drive.

"I'm guessing that will be never." I mumble and start to look outside.
