15. Friends No Longer

There they stood, on top of the closest mountain, looking over the town. The cold winter air hit them, bringing them closer to freezing to death. TJ looked out, while Cyrus stared at him, once again admiring how calm and relaxed and breathtaking he looked.

"So why'd you bring me here, Underdog. What was so important." He spoke breaking the silence that had been going on for a while.

"I like to come here to think. I never told anyone about this place. It's my place to think and observe and just relax."

   "Cyrus. Come on, spill."

'It's fine Cyrus. He might not take it the wrong way. He could be fine with it. It'll be fine, you'll be fine. Everything is going to be fine.'

"I don't actually know how to say this. I don't think we should be friends. For now. It's just, Reed thinks there's something going on and we're in a good place. I don't want to ruin that by him thinking there's something going on. So, I think we shouldn't, just for the time being."

TJ stared at him blankly taking time to process what he had been told.

"Wait what? So just because Reed thinks there's something going on we can't be friends? That's bull crap. Did you tell him there was nothing going on?"

"Yes I did but he told me never to speak to you again. I promised. Please Teej. It's really not that serious and it'll just be until he calms down and realizes that there was nothing to be jealous of and that we're nothing."

"Well that you're right about that. We are nothing. If you care so much about him feeling insecure and jealous and don't think we should be friends then maybe we shouldn't."

"TJ please." He reached his hand out, trying to hold his hand. TJ pulled back quickly, catching him by surprise. He was looking away, his eyebrows furrowed together His nostrils were flaring, just thinking about what had gone down.

His favorite month, December. Filled with joy and happiness and always a fun time of year, ruined by him losing his bestfriend. Ex-bestfriend.

   "Whatever. I'm gonna go."

He walked off, recollecting his thoughts. In the distance, he could hear Cyrus call out for him to stop. The sound of his voice would usually make his heart melt. It would brighten his day and make him feel happy but this was no longer the case. He could feel nothing but anger towards Cyrus and even more anger towards Reed for making him do what he did.
Cyrus was his best friend and dare he say it his big fat crush. All that came crashing down in minutes. Life didn't get much easier once he got home.

Everything was quiet, one might say a little too quiet. Somewhere in the house, he heard loud muffled crying. He followed the sound and found Amber in the corner of her room, crying her eyes out, facing away from anyone who would have walked in there.

"Amber what's wrong." He came running to her side, only to be met with deep red eyes, crying entire rivers. Her face was pink and filled with pain. She opened her mouth, struggling to use her voice for anything other than crying and screaming. TJ comforted her, trying his best to get her to spill what had caused her so much pain.

"I got a call about an hour ago."

"About? What happened. You're scaring me Amber." He asked the worry evident in his voice. His heart dropped as soon as she said those words. Everything around him felt unreal, like it could all disappear in seconds. He couldn't breath and felt his heart beginning to skip beats and give up on him. They were words he never expected to hear, and words he never wished he had to hear.

"Mom and Dad...they're dead. I got a call saying they got in a car crash on the highway. I came running home and just couldn't h-handle it."

    What a great day.
