4 | The River

The group approached the river, Avalon looking at the ice and all the little cracks in it.

"We need to cross now" Peter said, Avalon quickly agreeing.

"Theres another way it'll just take twice as long" she spoke as anxiety built in her, the river seemed to be cracking as they were speaking.

"Don't beavers make dams?" Lucy questioned.

"I'm not that fast darling" Beaver replied.

"Can we think about this for a minute" Susan asked suddenly.

"If we're going this way we don't have a minute" Avalon spoke softly.

"I'm just trying to be realistic" Susan replied rudely.

"No you're trying to be smart as always" Peter snapped back. Avalon stepped forward, placing her foot on the ice, a crack going through it. She quickly pulled her foot back, turning to the beavers.

"Maybe I should go first" Beaver said as she nodded. He began crossing it, patting the ice with his tail.

They cautiously began stepping on the ice as Beaver waved them along. The group was soon in the middle of the river. Avalon removed her arrow quiver and her bow, tossing it to the other side swiftly. Everyone looked to her oddly.

"Listen if this does crack I'm not loosing any of that" she said with a laugh. Peter smiled, softly shaking his head. Avalon suddenly stopped, looking up as her eyes widened.

'Oh no" she muttered. "Run!"

She pushed the group forward, them all taking off into a run as they saw the wolves approaching. The wolves jumped in front of the group, causing them to slide to a halt. They surrounded them before one held Mr.Beaver down. Peter drew his sword. Avalon stood behind him as Lucy gripped the girls shirt. Avalon reached down, taking the younger girls small hand in hers.

"Maugrim please" Avalon said to the lead wolf as he snarled.

"Really princess? I mean, you're the closest person to Aslan, whom were not too fond of. We're not gonna listen to you."

"Don't worry about me" Mr. Beaver said. "GUT HIM!"

"Leave now and your brother leaves with you" Maugrim said, obviously a lie.

"Stop Peter!" Susan exclaimed. "Maybe we should listen to him."

"Susan have you lost your mind?!" Avalon exclaimed. "It's a lie!"

"Don't listen to him!" Beaver exclaimed. "KILL HIM NOW!"

"Come on this isn't your war. All my queen wants is for you to take your family and go" Maugrim said smoothly.

"Listen just because some man in a red suit gives you a sword that doesn't mean you're a hero" Susan yelled at Peter.

"Susan shut up already" Peter yelled back.

"What will it be son of Adam? I wont wait forever" Maugrim said as the waterfall began cracking. "And neither will the river."

"Peter" Lucy said gripping his coat as they looked up to the river.

"Hold onto me" he said. Avalon gripped his coat and wrapped her arm around Lucy. He stuck his sword in the ice and it cracked parting them from Maugrim as they floated downstream. The current was furious. Lucy began slipping away. Avalon removed her hand from Peter to grab her but the pair slipped off the ice into the cold water. The girls head popped up out of the water as Lucy held her hand tightly. The older girl fought the current, pulling Lucy towards the edge of the water quickly. She helped her to the shore before the small girl ran to find the beavers or Peter for help. The current was only getting stronger as more ice broke from the waterfall. The girls head went under and came back up as the water tried pulling her with it but she held onto the rock tightly. She coughed more as water caught in her throat. Peter ran up and his eyes widened.

"I've got you" he said but as he held his hand out her hand slipped away from the rock.
