Chapter Four

HAMILTON POV

"Colonel Hamilton Sir!" Came from a fellow Aide-de-camp, George Bayler as he opened the flap to the Aides tent.

"A letter has come from Boston, addressed to you from General Howe; with a British occupied town return address." He said handing me the letter, saluting as he turned 180, and out of the tent.

How strange, what would General Howe have to say to me, Probably some sort of bribery to give battle plans. But that was too obvious, to ask an aide to the General to give out top secret information.

I sat down at one of the tents many desks for the many aides Washington had at camp. The letter was normal looking and slim, so nothing else would've been in it besides the letter. I flipped it over, a red wax stamp with the a cursive 'H' stamped in the middle. I did recognize the stamp so it must have really been from him. I took one of the knife-like letter openers at the desk and slid it under the wax, opening the letter. I took out the neatly folded piece of paper and glanced over its contents.

Col. Alexander Hamilton

I Hope this letter finds you, and when it does that you do reply by sending another letter back, in the same fashion as I sent this one. While on a scouting mission, some of my men found a young women by the name of Alex in the woods.

This young woman says that she is a sister to you, and requests to be returned immediately to your care. If this is the case, as a gentlemen I could only value a woman's wishes and do as she pleases.

If she is your sister and you do wish to have her back, I would like to make a trade. Lieutenant Throw, in exchange for the woman. If not then I do have no chance but to send her back into the forest from which she came, from their I have no way in securing her safety.

She did only ask me one thing before I constructed this letter, to tell you to 'Remember St.Kitts?'

Please respond immediately to this letter, as if you take too long rations might run out for the young lady.

Warmly,

General William Howe

Her Majesty's Army

This could not be happening. I thought I had finally gotten rid of her. But I did have to admit, I missed her. She was an annoying nuisance but a friendly one in tough times. I made an audible sigh before getting up and heading over to the Generals tent to see what he had to say on the matter. It is strange though, why would she come back now.

ALEX POV

I know letters travelled absurdly slow in the 18th century but it's been eight fucking days and if I have to have Daniel watch me in my tent all day so I don't, in the words of General Howe, "Kill yourself, Escape, or kill one of my men."

"Hey Daniel." I say getting up from my cot and taking the small pitcher of water on one of the two empty crates used as a makeshift table, and poured some of the water inside of it into the small wooden basin. I drink some of the water with my hands and then wash my face with the rest, drying myself off with my apron.

"Good morning, The general requested I bring you to him as soon as you wake, but I do think he can wait just a moment." He said, I looked at him strangely before I see him pull out a white handkerchief that was wrapped in a small ball, he outstretched his hand to offer it to me. I take the small bundle from him, opening it. Inside was a small piece of bread and a fig.

"Daniel if you weren't a redcoat bastard I'd have you as a good friend of mine." He laughed and shook his head.

"If you weren't a rebel, and sister to a rebel Aide-De-Camp. I would say the same." He said, standing up and holding his gun upright in his left hand, leaning the top of the musket on his shoulder.

I finished up the food he gave me, smiling to him to show how grateful I was that he was kind enough to give me food. While I was given food anyways it was usually mush and I wasn't quite sure how my body was able to digest it.

"Well let's not keep him waiting." I sighed whilst brushing myself off, leaving my bonnet on the cot, instead smoothing my hair into a messy bun on the back of my head.

I went to the front of the tent where he opened the flap of it, letting me duck out. He came out after me and walking on my right side, putting his free hand on my shoulder to make sure I wouldn't escape, and indicate I was a prisoner or ransom; which I was technically both. I had left the tent a few times since first being captured, which meant I did have a pretty good idea of the landscape of the campground if I were to escape. But I'd rather wait to see if Alexander were to save me instead.

As we walked towards what I could now easily identify as General Howe's tent I turned my head a bit to Daniels ear and whispered, "Think my brother is gonna leave me here to have you deal with me." I said

He looked at me, shook his head, and sighed before retorting, "Trust me I'd be the least of your troubles if Howe couldn't get rid of you." He was right if Alexander didn't get me out of here I dont know what I'd do.

As we walked into the tent General Howe was already seated at the head of the table of the room, hands clasped and smiling. Two of his aides were behind him, his manservant was also next to them holding a small jug. His last aide was in the back of the tent writing on a small desk. He looked me in the eye and his smile increased, "Please Ms. Hamilton, sit." He said gesturing to the other head of the table. "You may leave." He said to Daniel, I looked at him as he smiled at me and left the tent, saluting on his way out.

"Ms. Hamilton." He started, "Your brother has written back, accepting my terms." Good job Hamilton, you're not completely useless.

"My men will escort you to the entrance of York City, from there you will be handed over to your rebel brother, In exchange for Lieutenant Throw." He stood up and offered his hand to me, I took it and stood; immediately releasing my hand and wiping it on my apron. He looked back at me saying,

"I would wash up and collect your belongings, My men will take you immediately and you should arrive by 10pm tonight." I nodded and walked out of the tent, Daniel was standing outside waiting for me.

"Hey, good news?" He said promptly putting his hand on my shoulder and escorting me back to my tent.

"Surprisingly yes, My brother will be collecting me in York City by 10 tonight." His grip on my shoulder tightened and he pressed me closer to him, "I'll miss ya kid, ask your brother to not shoot me in battle." I leaned into him, knowing Alexander he would, "Ya I'll tell him."

We entered the tent and he stood by the entrance of it, watching me wash my face in the wooden bowl, fold my bonnet and put it in one of skirt pockets, retie my boots and redo my bun. I looked over at him and smiled, knowing that the only kind person to me here would soon be an opponent on the battlefield.

He walked me to the end of the camp, hand on my shoulder. We saw about six men all on horseback waiting for us. I leaned into Daniel and hugged him, muttering into his chest, "Don't get shot you bitch." He laughed hugging me back, then patting me on the shoulder to go to the men.

The one in front patted the back of the saddle he was sat on, indicating I would ride with him. He outstretched his hand, offering it to me. I held his hand I jumped up onto the horse, pressing my legs on either side of the steed for balance, and loosely wrapping my arms around the man's waist.

I looked back at Daniel one last time before the man kicked the horse with his feet and we were riding into the forest.
