32: Beloved Humans

A/N: Hewlo lovely ppl. I know I hadn't updated this or any of my ongoing fanfics last year. Or maybe I only did a couple of times. This year, I'm really determined to finish DiMENSIONS. Please take this chapter. After this I'll go and work towards the ending before I come back here again. Thanks so much for waiting!

-Silica, Yamato's Residence-

The next morning, the angel had decided. He was going to wipe whatever images or ideas he had about the two worlds clean and began seeing them by living alongside the humans. After all, they had Isumi Haruka's vengeful spirit to locate. As a dutiful Keeper and also a sinner for having tried to destroy the two worlds, Sougo thought he ought to help the humans he loved get rid of the root of the problem once and for all.

Not wanting to be a bother, Sougo decided he would try to learn things himself. Yamato had said he was free to use anything in the spare room he was in. Letting curiosity guide him, Sougo poked around every corner of the room. Believe it or not, it was his first time to spend a night inside a sheltered place called a 'house'. The room he was in had a carpeted floor, an AI vacuum cleaner, a bed, some shelves, and of course, Silica's one and only AI assistant: Kinako. Not sure what Sougo was thinking, but at one point, he looked under the bed to find a pile of magazines. When he pulled one of them out though,...

"Ahhhhhhh!!!!" Sougo screamed loudly, alarming both Ryuu and Yamato who were making breakfast in the kitchen. The couple quickly made their way to Sougo's room, thinking something bad had happened.

Sougo was on his knees. His face went as red as a tomato. On his lap was that very magazine he pulled out from under the bed. The cover featured a super erotic image of a buffed man in his tight and vibrant-coloured underwear. Yup, Ryuu and Yamato witnessed the whole scene.

"Oh," Yamato sighed. He wasn't a teeny bit fazed. "I thought our house is on fire or something. You scared us there, Sou." Yamato eyed that attention-grabbing object on Sougo's lap. "You found my dirty mag stash, huh? Do you like it?"

The redness on Sougo's face went all the way up to his ears. He wondered how humans could shamelessly talk about something so embarrassing.

"Ahahaha... it's a prank, right, Yamato-kun? Right?" Ryuu laughed dryly as if he had never known Yamato possessed such an item.

~~

Sougo followed Ryuu and Yamato to the Yamato's dark laboratory after breakfast. Really, he did not have to. He could have gone somewhere else and explored on his own, but he would like to observe what Silican's daily life was like. Sougo was instructed not to touch anything and so he did just that.

Sougo found the place rather suffocating. Sky Realm was basically a vast space full of clouds. He thought he'd be more fascinated by several strange things in the Silica, yet he ended up feeling a bit uncomfortable. Silica was such a 'proper' world to the angel in a way that people were always following some sort of procedure or protocol. Even just by stepping into the space distortion lab, he was bombarded with instructions on what to do and not do.

That being said, he loved it when Nagi stepped into the room to check on Ryuu and Yamato's progress. The two who looked like they were carrying the weight of the world, (which they technically were. They were tasked with locating the spirit after all.) appeared much less tense with Nagi hanging around. The responsibility they were tasked with was huge, yet these humans remained calm and continued their discussion and research. Sougo could not help smiling. He loved it when he could see the hearts of the humans. During dire situation, they came together as one and it was fascinating.

Perhaps with time, Sougo could understand more about the humans he loved on a deeper level.

~~

After a few more days, Sougo had gotten slightly more comfortable with Silica. Every day, he learned something new. Now that his heart was more open to these changes, he enjoyed himself much more than on the first day he got to Silica. Even if he had been exploring on his own most of the time and not getting to talk to anyone much, he was content. Doing too much would overwhelm him for sure.

Sougo could surf the Internet now and his life felt much easier. Every night, the angel would spend his time finding a place to go in Silica, be it restaurants or sightseeing landmarks. With only District One remaining, pretty much the only outstanding building acting as Silica's pride and joy was SkySilica, which Nagi had already given him a thorough tour inside. The angel felt pain in his stomach every time he thought about the lives he had destroyed. Although, he wasn't a human so his thinking was different. He was born a protector, and so his thinking was that of a protector. The thought of him destroying human worlds only saddened him for a brief moment from time to time, but it never stopped him from looking forward. Sougo knew his duty was to destroy the remnants of Haruka's spirit, and he believed that would bring joy to the beloved humans once again.

As for today, Sougo thought it would be nice to see a more 'entertaining' side of Silica. He decided to check out the Game Centre, where Tenn dragged Iori inside the day they discovered Majabah. While Sougo had no interest in trying out those crane machines or dance games himself, he thought his dragon, Tamaki, would come in and never leave this place.

The moment Sougo walked out of the Game Centre, his eyes met with a certain boy's. The angel gasped. Of course, he would recognise those pretty pink eyes. It was the twin of the Child of War he had sent to Silica in his frenzied state! Right away, Sougo approached that human. "You must be-!"

"You're the one who took my eye." Kujou Tenn cut the angel off. He stared right into those widened lavender eyes. Strangely, Tenn did not seem to resent Sougo. When Sougo was about to bow his head, Tenn stopped him. "Save your apology. What's done is done. It's annoying, but it doesn't really matter much." The idol shrugged his shoulders. "With Silica's technology and my magic, I can pretty much get by without problems." Taking out his phone, he made it create a hologram projection of sheet music to show Sougo he could easily read from that thing in front of him.

"But-" That did not make Sougo feel any less guilty.

A small smile curved onto Tenn's face. "Look, if you really want to say sorry, come with me, won't you?"

Sougo quietly followed Tenn to a medium-sized building not too far from the Game Centre. Tenn placed his palm on a detector in front of Anesagi Productions. Once it had been verified that Tenn was no stranger to the place, the door was opened for them. Tenn and Sougo walked past the reception to a certain room where Iori was sitting and keying some stuff into what looked like management software on his computer.

"Welcome back, Tenn-san. Oh," Iori got distracted by the presence of the angel.

"I picked him up on the way here," Tenn explained. After that, the idol twirled and winked at Iori.

The high school manager chuckled, knowing exactly what Tenn was thinking. "Not wasting your chance of getting a new fan, I see."

Iori was right, the idol was about to charm the hell out of our angel by becoming an angel himself. "Watch me."

Tenn walked into the middle of the practice room and used his object-manipulation magic to flick a switch on the stereo system in the corner. His idol music began playing. There, he began singing and dancing. He might have been extremely confident, arrogant even, but his performance definitely did not disappoint the high school boy and the angel.

"Whoooa." Sougo stared in awe, as did Iori. How could a so-called imperfect being be so beautiful? Sougo thought. Despite being half-blind, Tenn's gracefulness and elegance never got chopped down. The angel admired the strength Tenn was showing him. Had he watched a few more performances, he would become Tenn's fan for sure.

~~

Iori, Tenn, and Sougo weren't exactly friends, but the two humans did not mind when Sougo wanted to tag along to places with them. The angel had an opportunity to visit a school thanks to Iori, and he could see more of Silica's entertainment by being with Tenn. The three met up with Momo and Yuki once. As expected, Yuki only shot a look full of hatred and resentment at Sougo. The fact remained that the angel took Banri away from Yuki even if Sougo did not mean to. Anyway, Sougo did not expect humans to be friendly to him after what he had done. Just getting this close was already considered an achievement of some sort. His love for humans had not changed nonetheless.

"Just out of curiosity, how do you find Silica so far?" Iori had never been the type to converse much. Sougo was slightly surprised he was asked a question while they were on a sky train to the Central Hospital.

"Oh, um..."

Iori sighed when he caught a hint of hesitation in Sougo's voice. "You can just be honest. I couldn't care less what you think. You can say whatever you want. It's not like we're going to change even if you hate us to your core."

"I would never!" Sougo shot Iori a hurt look, surprising the young boy a little. "I could never hate humans. Like when you said you did not care what I was thinking, yet you asked me anyway."

Blushing, Iori turned his back to the angel. "T-that was simply a question anyone would ask in this kind of situation."

Sougo found Iori's reaction to be pretty adorable; to think a cool-looking boy like Iori would turn out to be the shy type. "Humans truly are interesting," Sougo mumbled while also chuckling lightly. He snapped out of his cheerful mode when he realised he had not answered Iori's question. "Oh, your world is rather strict. It was hard to get used to at first, but now I am delighted to be learning more and more every day."

"Strict? So that's how you view Silica, huh?" Iori chuckled while stepping off the train and walking towards the hospital. "I thought that word would be more suited for Majabah." Personally, Iori could not deal with 'class' and all those traditional practices. To him, compared to Majabah, Silica was a world of freedom.

"You do have a point there, Iori-kun." Come to think of it, if Sougo was trying to open his heart and see Silica the way it was now, should he not be doing the same for Majabah? He had previously thought Silica was a world of peace and happiness, which was partly true, it was peaceful for sure. However, the image of the current Silica was totally different from what Sougo had in mind. Majabah had probably changed too. That magic world was conquered by one lord, the Nanase, for the past hundreds of years, but perhaps something else had changed. He would never know the details if he only saw things from above.

"Nii-san, are you done with all the paperwork?"

Iori's voice pulled Sougo away from his thoughts. Oh, so they had walked into a hospital. Quite a bright place here. Sougo didn't like the smell at all. He was trying hard to ignore it. Anyway, standing in front of him was an orange-haired boy with one human leg. Immediately, Sougo knew that was Iori's big brother, whose leg was chopped off thanks to the effects of his uncontrolled force. It was difficult to take his eyes off that mechanical leg. Once again, Sougo felt deep pain and guilt in his heart.

"Yeah! I'm no longer a doctor at this hospital." Mitsuki turned around to face the corridor he used to run along several times, pushing the patient's bed into an emergency room. "Ahh, I'm going to miss this place."

"You resigned...?" Sougo asked in a quiet voice. He could not help but wonder if it was because of Mitsuki's leg somehow.

"Oh, you're the Keeper guy."

Sougo was prepared for hatred and resentment. Instead, Mitsuki smiled widely at him.

"It's a surprise you look exactly like us when you hide your wings, Sougo!" The young doctor grabbed Sougo's shoulder.

"U-um..." The angel was not sure how to react.

"Oh right, your question," Mitsuki totally forgot about it for a second there. "We're going to open up a hospital in Majabah, so yeah, I'll be busy enough serving the lord and being a doctor there."

Sougo's eyes widened. "You voluntarily choose to be in Majabah?"

"Yup!" Mitsuki answered firmly. "It's kind of a dangerous world, but that's what makes it thrilling. Ahahahaha!"

Sougo stared at Mitsuki's face in awe. That was exactly the last push he needed. If a Silican said he wanted to be in Majabah, then maybe something really had changed. That was when Sougo decided he would give Majabah and the humans in them one more chance. "I have a favour to ask if you do not mind."

"Hmm? What is it?" asked Mitsuki.

"I would very much like to accompany you to Majabah to learn more about that world as well."

-Majabah-

One week after Sougo came back to his senses, Sousuke's men could not find even a single clue as to where the spirit could be. True, Majabah was a world of magic, but it was not a world of supernatural beings. The concept of a spirit existing to hurt humans was foreign to them as well as to Silicans. The lord, Nanase Riku, had asked a messenger to travel to Silica to let Nagi know that so far they had come up empty-handed. Too bad, Silica scientists also had not detected anything unusual using scientific means. The lord and the Regulator had agreed to give it another week. They would have a meeting to discuss their next step after that should there be no good news.

Riku refused to just sit around when his men were working hard, so he told Gaku he would like to travel to the remaining towns in Majabah. The butler was opposed to the idea at first, saying he alone could handle it. Riku, however, insisted he would rather see the state of his world with his own eyes. Left without a choice, Gaku took his lord's side. As for Mitsuki, he was working with other Silicans and Majabahns to establish the system in a new hospital that had just been built in Majabah.

Gaku chose to ignore the angel who was planning to follow the two around. As of now, he didn't like the guy, especially when Sougo showed no respect to his lord whatsoever, but he wasn't going to stop someone with the intention of opening his heart to new changes.

"Is my lord ready to depart?" Gaku went down on one knee when Riku came walking towards the mansion entrance. Once Riku nodded, Gaku continued, "I shall tell Tsumugi to ready a carriage at once."

"Carriage? Are you trying to have the whole town recognise us?" The lord shot his servant a questioning look. Once Gaku looked up, damn, how stunning his lord was in casual noble attire. Right, they were not trying to hide their identities, but they also did not want to cause a commotion either. They wanted to be able to talk freely to the townspeople.

"Are you suggesting we ride the dragon then?" Gaku spoke teasingly. "Honestly, my lord will end up bedridden if we run around using time magic."

"Baka," Riku pouted, breaking his lord character. "I shall ride a horse."

"A horse?!?" Gaku went wide-eyed. "Can you even ride a horse, Nanase-sama?" Good point, Gaku personally had never seen his lord on a horse before.

Riku could hardly believe what he was hearing. His amber eyes started glowing. "Gaku, just who do you think you are speaking to? I am a ruling lord, no??? Did you think I was not trained to ride?"

"Exactly, you are a lord! There's no need for a lord to ride a horse when you can just order everyone to take you places!" Gaku now stood back up and argued. "What if you fall off a horse and get hurt?"

"Has your experience in Silica wiped your memory clean?" Riku summoned a ball of darkness in his hand to remind Gaku that they were magic users. Bruises and cuts were nothing when they had white magic.

Watching from a distance, Sougo was shocked to see the events that transpired. He had never once seen a servant so arrogant towards the Nanase before. He watched as the two fought like school friends for a while longer. In the end, Gaku left for the stable and returned with two horses walking by his side, earning a wide, childish smile from Riku.

~~

"Good day. How is business around here?"

"The crops here seem to be growing nicely."

"Hmm. Is that so? I believe having a bigger sign would attract more visitors."

Sougo watched as Riku repeatedly got on and off his horse to approach people in several towns in Majabah. With Riku's smile, most nobles quickly opened up to him, talking about their lives and the towns they lived in. Most commoners appeared wary of Riku's presence though. Riku appeared saddened when some only said sorry several times before running away from him. It made sense since highborn were generally not very kind towards lowborn. Sougo could hear Riku discussing with Gaku the class difference issue. The lord made sure Gaku was noting down the details from their patrols so that they could address each problem one by one.

Riku did not stop patrolling the towns after just one day. He made sure to go to every nook and cranny of Majabah. One week and he never once sat around in a mansion, bathing in luxury like the previous lords did. The Keeper was in awe. Sure, the former warring world was still full of flaws, but with a kind-hearted lord like this, perhaps it was going to change in a better way.

Sougo could not just keep a smile to himself. He was glad he was able to open his heart to the current world. The two worlds had changed, mostly in a better direction. Humans had evolved, but they were still his beloved humans. There were bound to be good and bad ones, and that was acceptable. Most people in those worlds loved peace. Most of them would protect that peace. At first, he had wanted to separate Silica from Majabah once Haruka was dealt with, but now, perhaps...

"Nanase Riku, I hope you are the miracle Majabah needs. May you lead your people down the right path, always."

And that was basically Sougo's arc teehee~
