Unstably Stable

Steven's POV:

After Opal saved us from a bunch of those giant birds, we made our way back to the warp. Hm... but I can't help thinking we forgot something...

"Wow Opal, you were amazing!" Connie shouted. I'm glad she could finally meet Opal, I hoped that Connie'd like her.

Opal laughed a bit, and it sounded like Pearl but more happy like Amethyst. Giant women are soooo cool! "Thanks Connie, I try." She blushed too!

"Haha, well you succeed too!" I shouted.

"Aww, thanks little man." She laughed, ruffling my hair and making Connie chuckle in the process.

"Aw c'mon! Im a Crystal Gem!"

"Whatever you say." Opal smiled.

I activated the warp. I'll show this Giant Lady what Steven power really is!

When we made it back to my place, Connie fell out of midair again, only this time, I caught her!

"Careful milady."

"Thank you my liege." She chuckled.

"Welcome home." Garnet called from the couch. She'd been gone all day! I missed her!

"Hey Garnet!" I shouted, running over to her. "Check it out! Amethyst and Pearl fused into a giant woman again!"

Opal stepped off the warp pad, Connie at her side. "H-Hey Garnet." She waved using one of her four awesome arms.

"Hm?" Garnet glanced at Opal, before getting off the couch to meet her. "Something's different."

"Um well I'm just a little bit shorter, is all! Haha..." Opal was acting weird, she seemed... uneasy. And Garnet was right! She was a little bit shorter, which is weird well because... who's ever heard of a short Giant Woman?

"Right." Garnet nodded. "Opal, could you unfuse for a moment, I have some questions for Amethyst and Pearl." Hm, I wonder what Garnet's gotta ask her...

"Uh... sure, Garnet!" Opal chimed. The slightly shorter Giant Woman started grunting and she made a face like she was constipated. Connie came over and we stared at her together.

"She looks constipated." Connie whispered.

I chuckled. Connie always gets me. "That's what I was thinking!" I whispered back to her.

Suddenly, Opal's body started glowing and for a quick second I could see Pearl and Amethyst's bodies outlined in light but they quickly snapped back together and Opal refused, falling to the floor with a "Yowch."

"Hm, just what I thought..." I couldn't tell, because she had her back to me, but I think Garnet was smiling. I could just hear the smile in her voice.

"Huh? Hey Garnet! What did you think?" I said, rushing over to her to see if she was actually smiling.

"These two, well Opal, is on the threshold of a perfectly stable fusion." Garnet spoke from behind a finger placed over her mouth so I couldn't tell if she was smiling or not.

"I know this is definitely a gem thing but what's a perfectly stable fusion?" Connie chimed.

"You two probably aren't old enough for this talk. Besides, I said I'd do this with Pearl and Amethyst present."

"Aw c'mon! We're mature!" I flashed Garnet my growing mustache. "See? I have a mustache now!"

"Hm." She examined my thick, furry mustache extremely closely, as if she couldn't see anything. "I don't think so."

"But-"

"Garnet, technically Amethyst and Pearl are here, they're just fused into Opal." Connie explained, saving the day.

"Hm." Garnet glanced back at Opal, who was just staring at the rocky ceiling near the temple, with one pair of her arms folded behind her head. "Alright, I guess you're right Connie."

"Woo!" I was so excited, I swept Connie up in a spinning hug. We laughed a bunch while we spun and when we finally stopped, I was a little bit dizzy.

"Alright Steven, you ready?" Garnet asked.

"Always ready! Now tell meee..."

"Tell us..." Connie joined in.

Garnet smiled. "Alright. When two gems love each other very much-"

"Like Ruby and Sapphire!" I shouted.

"Yes." Garnet gave me a warm smile. I love seeing her happy like this! She usually only gets this happy when we talk about fusion and stuff. "Like Ruby and Sapphire. When two gems love each other very much, they can involuntarily fuse together without needing to perform a fusion dance. Two gems in love can stay together in a fusion practically forever."

"You think that's what happened to Pearl and Amethyst?" Connie asked.

"Possibly, but it's more likely Amethyst fell asleep in the fusion and Pearl's trapped in fusion jail."

"Wait, that can happen?" Connie and I shouted together.

"No. That was a joke."

Well that was... a joke.

After a short silence, Garnet spoke to us again. "Were Pearl and Amethyst alright before fusing?"

That's right! We went to mom's fountain to fix Amethyst's gem! That's what I forgot!

"Amethyst's gem was cracked before they fused!" I shouted.

"But I- well... we never saw it get fixed." Connie chimed. I think she maaay have wanted to see mom's fountain magic.

"Then we need to check Opal to see if she's... unstable."

We all turned to check on Opal at the warp, but...

"She's gone!"
