Chapter 18

Kelley's POV
I watched in horror as Alex coughed out more blood. Once she as done I grabbed her and laid her in bed. I grabbed a plastic bag incase she coughed again. Then I called Dawn and told her what happened. She told me to bring her down and that we would take her to the hospital.

I quickly went to Tobins room so that she could help me.

"What are you doing here Kelley?" Tobin asked in a very tired voice.
"It's Alex. I need you to help me bring her down stairs. Don't ask questions just come." I said in a hurry.

Finally we got back to my room and we helped Alex up. I carried the plastic bag incase she coughed. When we got downstairs Dawn was there to help us.

We got int a car then drove to the newest hospital. When we got there we went to the ER where the doctors took her.
Another doctor took us to the waiting room where I sat down with Tobin and waited.

"What happened?" Tobin asked.
"I don't know. When I got back to the room Alex said she wasn't feeling well and she said she took medicine and stuff. She seemed fine before we went to sleep. Then I woke up because I heard her coughing..."
"Did she ever have something like this before?"
"Not that I know of..."
"She'll be okay. I know she will." Tobin says.
"I hope so."

About an hour later the doctor came out.
"Hi I'm Dr. Thomas and I'm assuming you guys are here for Alex right?"
"Yes." I respond.
"Alex had an aortic aneurysm which explains the coughing up blood. She was just taken into surgery to fix it. We'll be out to update you as soon as we can."
"Thank you." I reply as I sit back down.

I got up and went outside to get some air and to clear my mind for a while. I was scared and nervous for Alex and if she was going to be okay or not. When I was outside I sat down on a bench and stared out into the open.

"Thought I'd find you here." Tobin says as she sits next to me. "Are you okay?"
"Yea I'm just scared. I've lost people in my life and I don't want her to be one."
"You won't lose her. She will be okay. How long have you guys known each other?"
"Forever. All the way back in elementary school. We literally grew up together. She's my best friend."
"A friendship like that sounds beautiful." Tobin says.
"Thanks" I say with a small smile.

A couple hours the doctor came out.

"The surgery went well and we were able to fix everything. You should be able to go see her soon." The doctor says.

I let out a breathe knowing she was okay. About an hour later I went in to see her.

"Hi Kelley." Alex says as I walk into her room.
"Oh my gosh Alex." I said as I walk over and give her a hug. "Are you okay? What happened?" I asked.
"It's nothing I'm fine really it's just my stupid heart problems but it's all better now."
"Thank god. You scared me to death."

A couple minutes later my phone rang, it was my mom.
"I'll be back." I said as I leave the room.

Tobin's POV
As Kelley left the room I went in to check on Alex.

"Hey Alex." I said as I pulled up a chair.
"Hey Tobs." Alex says.
"I know you probably got asked this a lot but how are you?"
"Not good."
"But you just told Kelley you're fine and better and the doctor said everything was good."
"It's called lying Tobin."
"Talk to me then. Tell me the truth because I understand that it's sometimes hard to tell your best friend bad news."
"Okay..." Alex says.

"The truth is my heart is garbage and it's in bad shape. My doctor put me on the transplant list for a new heart already but the things is waiting for a new heart takes a long time and I don't have that much time. So then I told my doctor to tell Kelley that I was fine because I don't want her to worry."
"Alex this is terrible. Not telling Kelley is terrible and then when the worst comes and you die..."
"I know." Alex says cutting me off. "I know this is bad but Kelley's birthday is in 3 days and I want it to be the best ever and if she knows I'm sick then she won't enjoy her birthday."
"You can't die Alex. Your still young and just got on the national team. There's so much more the world has planned for you."
"I know. But until a miracle happens and I get a new heart I'm dying but I'm going to be here for Kelley's birthday. And Tobin?"
"Yea?"
"You can't tell anyone about this. Promise?"
"Okay I won't I promise." I said in reply.
"Thank you." Alex said.

"Sorry it was my mom. She just wanted to know how you were doing." Kelley says as she comes back into the room.

Not telling anyone that someone is dying is probably the worst secret someone can keep.
