Phone Calls Have My Heart Beating

" I tell you what I want
You never get me wrong
Let's keep the conversation going on and on
We could say a lot of things, a lot of ways
But everytime I know
You love me when you whisper through the phone. . ."

"Do you two have time to run rounds or are you too busy getting naked on hospital property?" Bailey asked Cristina and Meredith but Cristina specifically as she continued to walk away.

Alison let out an unattractive snort as she had heard about Yang's stripping to Doctor Burke with his parents walking in. Β

Although Addison was given the day off for personal reasons, though Alison was pretty sure it had to do with Derek sleeping with Meredith, Alison was still at the hospital. Β She didn't mind having more hours right now so she said yes. Β Alison had to admit that she felt bad for her fellow coworker and friend, knowing she didn't deserve what Derek was doing to her. Β No matter if she did the wrong first. Β

Alison had seen that she had a few of deliveries to do that day but it was nothing major. Β Somehow she had to be the one working on a day that it was slow.

*

"Or you can tell me whose damn panties are on the damn bulletin board," Bailey yelled as the interns and other doctors started to take notice. Β "This is a hospital people! Β Serious work happens here. Β We save lives. Β Oh is something funny?"

Alison and Callie knew exactly whose black panties those were although neither had directly talked about it with each other. Β

"I know it's one of you," Bailey said looking at Meredith and Cristina. Β "It's always one of mine. Β Always. Β So tell me. Β Whose is it? Β One of you left your damn draws on my surgical floor."

"Oh no, did I leave my underwear out again?" Callie said as she laughed making Alison and the others shocked as she took them off the bulletin board. Β "I am so sorry, Bailey. Β It's my bad," she nodded her head as Bailey had the most shocked look on her face that Alison had ever seen.

Alison had let out a little giggle at the Bailey's facial expression as everyone then went back to work.

*

"I know those weren't really yours," Alison pointed out to the Latina. Β

"What?" She asked as her eyebrows furrowed.

"The panties hanging on the wall."

"Oh that," Callie let out a slight laugh as she shrugged her shoulders. Β "Well, I didn't think she should have to deal with that embarrassment. Β Not even my worst enemy would deserve that."

"That was very brave of you," Alison told the Ortho doctor and walked away leaving a smile on Callie's face. Β

Alison was walking through the halls when she ran into a familiar face. Β The one belonging to Preston Burke's mother. Β She knew that his parents were still there at the hospital making sure that their son was still there and she thought it was sweet. Β

"Mrs. Burke?" Alison stopped the mother as she was walking into her sons room.

"Yes?" She furrowed her eyebrows.

"Hi, my name is Alison. Β Alison Anderson. Β I work with your son and I just wanted to introduce myself to you."

"Oh yes, it's so nice to meet you," Mrs. Burke shook her hand. Β "Please call me Jane. Β Preston has been telling us that you've been visiting on your off hours to keep him company. Β That's very kind of you."

"It's the least I can do. Β I just want him to be comfortable is all."

"Yes," Jane made a tsk sound and shook her head. Β "So awful what happened to him. Β I'm glad the shooter is dead."

"I am too," Alison nodded her head. Β "Unfortunately Doctor Burke was just in the wrong place at the wrong time. Β I just hope he gets feeling better."

"I do too," the mother agreed with the doctor. Β "Would you like to come keep Preston company and meet Mr. Burke while I have coffee with Cristina?"

"Yeah, I don't mind," Alison smiled. Β "How is he doing today?"

The two immediately taking a liking to the other as they chatted all the way into her sons room. Β His mother was glad that he had such great coworkers to keep him company and look out for his well-being.

Since Alison didn't have any patients for the next few hours, she decided to watch the surgery with the teenager who had a tree in him. Β She noticed how the interns watched with fascination as the doctors tried to work around the tree. Β Alison felt bad for the kid and his family. Β She knew that Doctor Bailey was furious at Karev for punching the patient's dad. Β

"Do women have two sets of panties? Β You know two sets they wear for two separate occasions," Alison heard George ask the other two interns to which she smirked lightly but continued watching from the gallery.

Alison decided to leave the surgery after a while as she was getting antsy from not being able to do much today. Β As she walked out into the waiting room she noticed the man from earlier still there, the kids father, Mr. Hernandez. Β

"Mr. Hernandez?" Alison called his name to which he stood up and Alison could see the dried blood on his sweater and she felt bad for the man.

"Yes. Β Are you one of the doctors working on my son? Β How is he?"

"I'm sorry, I'm not," she gave him a sad smile. Β "I know though that the doctors are working as hard as they can for your son. Β Do you mind if I sit next to you?"

"Go ahead," he gestured to the chair next to him to which she sat down.

"Do you need something for your nose? Β I can get you some ice," the blonde told the father.

"Oh no," he smiled sadly at her. Β "That's very kind of you but I'm better now. Β But what was up with that doctor who punched me?"

Alison looked over her shoulder both ways before leaning in closer to him as he thought it was kind of odd behavior but went along with it.

"Between you and me he's called the devil's spawn here at the hospital," she told the patient's dad to which he had a shocked look on his face.

Though it wasn't really professional at the moment, Alison didn't care. Β She felt bad for the parents and wanted to somehow get his mind off of everything. Β She knew that the waiting was the worst part during the surgery. Β Alison also knew that unfortunately, in this surgery, it didn't have a happy ending.

"No kidding," Mr. Hernandez replied his eyes slightly wide and Alison let out a tiny giggle.

"It's true. Β But I have to admit, he's a pretty good doctor. Β He has his flaws but he cares about his patients and he works really hard. Β He may not always have a way with words but I promise you Mr. Hernandez that your son is under the best care."

"I know," he nodded his head. Β Regardless of whatever outcome it was, and he knew there was a high chance his son will not make it, but he knew that these doctors were doing everything they could. Β "He's just so young. Β Do you have anywhere you need to be?"

"Nope," the blonde shook her head as she looked at the patients father. Β "I'm going to stay right here with you."

"Thank you," he smiled a small one at the short doctor. Β "For staying here, I mean."

It had been a long shift and while Alison was tired as hell, she was using coffee as her best friend to keep her awake. Β She had just finished pouring the caramel macchiato creamer into her coffee as her phone started to ring. Β Pulling her phone from her white coat pocket, she saw that her boyfriend was FaceTiming her which put a smile on her face and her heart beat a little fast with excitement. Β

"Hey, are you busy right now?" Anthony asked the blonde doctor.

"No," she shakes her head. Β "I haven't had that many patients today surprisingly. Β Why?"

"Well, this little guy wanted to say hi," He brings his son Bentley into view making the blonde's eyes light up as she smiled brightly at the little four year old that made its way into the screen.

"Bentley!" she exclaimed as he smiled wide and his brown eyes seemed to sparkle. Β "How are you?"

"Ali! Β I'm good," he smiled shyly at the blonde. Β "I drew you a picture."

"You did? Β What did you draw?"

"Let me go get it," he scampered off of his dad's lap and Anthony laughed, shaking his head and smirking at his girlfriend as they waited for Bentley to come back.

When he reappeared he thrusted the picture in front of the screen and Alison lit up. Β He drew her a picture.

"Wow, it's so good, Ben! Β And you drew it all yourself?"

The little boy nodded and Alison could see his cheeks become a little rosy and she thought it was adorable.

"I love it. Β When I see you tomorrow, I'm going to put it on my fridge."

"Promise?" He asked, holding up his pinky.

"Promise," she nodded her head holding up her pinky.

Somehow everything we go through in a day, a phone call has the power to make our heart beat fast. Β To put a smile on our face when talking to our loved ones. Β And to brighten up our days no matter the difficulties we had faced.

They have the ability to turn a cloudy day into a clear one. Β It's funny how no matter how much bad can happen in a day - something good can come out of it. Β

Never taking your loved ones for granted. Β Your friends checking in on you, making sure that you're okay. Β A drawing. Β

It's the little things that can put a smile on our face.

- Β

It was the end of Alison and Bailey's shift as Addison had sent them a group text asking them to meet her at Joe's. Β Alison wasn't sure what to expect when she saw Addison but it wasn't this. Β She wasn't used to seeing her without any makeup on and in sweatshirts and sweatpants with a hat on her. Β

"Oh my God," she heard Bailey mutter and then put a smile on her face after they both walked up to the brunette.

"Hey, you okay?" Alison asked her boss as she hugged her and rubbed her back slightly.

"Did you know what your slutty friend did with our slutty intern?" She slurred her words slightly.

"Okay," Alison took the shot glass from her. Β "I think you've had too much to drink. Β Let's get you home, Addison."

"No," she shook her head. Β "I can't go home anymore. Β It's not home."

"Alright, a hotel?"

Alison would have offered her place to Addison but since she was going to be watching Bentley tomorrow, she knew that she shouldn't. Β Addison nodded her head and off they went as they said goodbye to Bailey. Β

*

Derek knocked on the hotel and Addison opened up.

"I thought you were room service," she muttered, not really looking him in the eye but let him come in as Addison sat on her bed.

"I feel terrible," Derek started out. Β "I'm not proud of what I did. Β You deserve better. Β I'm sorry about that. Β I'm sorry about the panties. Β Prom. Β I'm sorry I did that," he then walks closer to her and sits next to her on the bed.

"Yeah," Addison started out. Β "I'm sorry too."

"Our marriage is over."

"Yeah, I guess it is."

"It's all my fault," Derek muttered softly. Β "God, that is incredibly sad."

All of a sudden Derek hears a door opening and turns to look at it with his eyebrows furrowed. Β There he spots his ex-best friend naked with a towel around his waist. Β

"Oh," Mark says. Β "This is awkward."

Derek then proceeds to take a sip of Addison's drink.

"I feel much better now," he tells her then gets up to leave.
