chapter thirteen: stuck at the station

"he doesn't have a choice, bud."
β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”β€”

aurora jumped awake, swinging her hands over to her nightstand. someone was calling her, and because of how loud the ringer was, it nearly gave her a heart attack. she picked up the phone, looking over to her digital clock on her nightstand.

"it's two in the fucking morning." she grumbled, sitting up.

"rori, we found something but we need to ask max a question. is he there?" scott told her.

"yeah, yeah. just hold on."

and with that aurora got out of bed, exiting her room and going towards max's. luckily he was home and awake. the older hasting looked at his niece with furrowed eyebrows.

"what're you doing up?"

"scott needs to speak to you." rori mumbled, plopping down on max's bed. she then put the phone on speaker. "you can speak now."

"we need to ask about someone who was at the hospital." scott said. "can you help?

"uh, i can help. i deal with a lot of people." max told him, sitting up.

"this one's 16. he's got dark hair, looks like a normal teenager." scott listed.

"you just describe me, you, and stiles. be more specific." rori said.

"yeah, he looks evil." stiles added, making aurora roll her eyes.

"very specific, stiles." she mumbled.

"look, boys, i already talked to the police about this." max said into the phone.

"rori, imma send you a picture." scott told her, making rori hum.

a few seconds later, she got the picture, making her click on it. it was a yearbook picture of matt. aurora showed it to max, making him furrow his eyebrows.

"did you get it?" scott asked.

"yep." aurora said, max taking the phone from her.

"okay, do you recognize him? do you remember him?" scott questioned.

"uh, yeah, i remember him. melissa and i was walking down the hall and she stopped him cause he was tracking mud in the hall." max explained. "does that help?"

"yeah." scott answered.

aurora got from max's bed, taking her phone back and exiting the room. "what did you guys find?"

"matt's in the 2006 year. mostly everyone that he has killed was on the swim team that year." scott explained.

"oh, shit." rori mumbled.

"rori." noah said from the other side of the phone.

"sorry, mr.stilinksi." she mumbled.

"look, we'll tell you everything else tomorrow." scott told her.

"yeah, yeah. okay." rori said before hanging up.

"actually, rori, can you and max come down to the station? we need an i.d for a search warrant. scott call your mother too, just in case." noah said.

"okay, i'll be there in a few." aurora said before hanging up. "max! we're needed at the police station!"

~~~
max and aurora pulled up in front of the station, melissa pulling up at the same time. the three of them exchanged a look before they walked inside, looking around.
aurora raised her eyebrows, knowing that there's usually someone at the front desk. the hairs on the back of her neck stood up.
"i don't like how quiet it is." she mumbled.
"yeah, and empty." max added.
"mom." the voice of scott said, making aurora look over to the hallway, her eyes widening, max doing the same thing.
"you scared me, where is every -" melissa started, interrupting herself when she saw that matt was standing behind scott, holding a gun to his head.
"mom, just do what he said. he promised not to hurt you." scott said. "you too, max."
"he's right." matt said, scott turning around.
matt then aimed the gun lower before he pulled the trigger, scott flying to the ground. aurora growled before she ran towards matt, but he beat her to it, shooting her in the shoulder.
"aurora!" max yelled.
"scott! stiles." aurora heard noah yell. "what happened?!"
aurora went to run at matt again, but he shot at her again, the bullet going into her abdomen. this made her fall, landing besides scott.
"but i didn't say i wouldn't hurt you, or her." matt told scott, walking over to the mccall boy.
melissa and max tried to go towards the two teens, but matt quickly pointed the gun at them.
"back! back!" he yelled, making them back up.
"max, just do what he says!" aurora told her uncle, who was willing to risk it all to help his niece. "max, please."
he nodded, taking a small step back and towards melissa, just in case matt tried anything.
"get up, mccall. you too, hastings." matt demanded the werewolves.
"matt! matt, listen to me!" noah yelled from somewhere in the building.
"shut - shut - shut up!" matt yelled. "everybody just shut the hell up! now get up, or i'll shoot her next!" he told the teen, aiming his gun straight at melissa.
scott and aurora quickly got up, aurora holding her arm that had been shot. matt then took max and melissa toward the holding cells in the back, noah being handcuffed to the wall. max and melissa was push into the holding cell, matt closing the door.
noah looked at aurora, seeing that blood was dripping down her arm and down her front. he looked at her with worried eyes, but all she did was give him a reassuring look.
"please, they need to see a doctor." melissa said to matt.
"you think so?" matt asked.
aurora looked at scott, asking if he knew about her and scott. the mccall boy nodded his head, making her release a sigh.
"hey, hey, you listen to me." noah called, standing up from the bench he was sitting on.
"it's alright. i'm okay." scott told noah.
"i am too." aurora said, feeling herself start to heal.
"no, you guys aren't alright." max said, stepping closer to the bars, making matt look at him closely.
"it doesn't hurt, guys." scott told the three adults.
"cause that's the adrenaline, okay?" melissa told her son before turning to matt. "please, let me - let us just take a look at them, okay?"
"we can help stop the bleeding." max added.
matt turned towards aurora and scott, "they have no idea, do that?"
"please, let me just take a quick look." melissa begged.
"shut up! shut up! shut up!" matt told her. "lady, if you keep talking, i'm gonna put the next few bullets in their heads."
"okay." melissa said.
"back to the front, you two." matt told the two werewolves.
aurora and scott looked at each other before they looked back at matt.
"after you." he said.
this made the both of them walk out and into the hall, matt holding the gun behind them as he led them to the sheriff's office. once they entered, aurora saw derek and scott lying on the floor.
jackson's here too.
"the evidence is gone." scott told him. "why don't you just go?"
"you - you think the evidence mattered that much, huh?" matt question. "no, no. i - i want the book."
"what book?" aurora asked.
"the bestiary." matt told her. "not just a few pages, the entire thing."
"hate to break it to you, but we don't have it." aurora said. "it's gerard's."
"why do you want it for anyway?" scot asked.
"i need answers." matt answered.
"answers to what?"
"to this." matt said before he pulled his shirt up, revealing scales going up the side of his abdomen.
matt then pushed them out, going into the space where all of the deputies work at. "there."
this made the duo stop walking, aurora looking down at her abdomen, scott doing the same. her shoulder at healed up since the bullet had went straight through, but her abdomen still at the bullet in there.
"you know, i - i feel sorry for you two, cause right now you're thinking, 'how are we gonna explain this when it heals?'" matt said, making the both of them look up at him. "and the sad part is you don't even realize how incredible it is that you actually are healing. cause you know what happens to everyone else when they get shot? they die."
"is that what happened to you?" scott asked as matt walked walked a few steps away. "you drowned didn't you?"
"he shouldn't have let them drink." matt said, making aurora furrow her eyebrows.
"you gotta elaborate, matt. who?" aurora said.
"lahey!" matt yelled. "he shouldn't have let them drink."
"what? who was drinking?" scott asked.
"the swim team, you idiot! i didn't know what was happening. i didn't know that they had just won state, and lahey, he's letting his favorites come over to have a couple drinks to celebrate. who cares if they're 17, right?" matt said.
"were you at isaac's?" aurora questioned.
"he had this first edition spider - man, o - or was it batman? and we were gonna make a trade. and then i'm over there and i hear music. and everyone's having a good time, and i see sean. he throws jessica into the pool. and then - then bennett goes in and -" matt explained.
"bennett? the hunter?" scott asked.
"and then camden. isaac's jarhead brother grabs me. he thinks it's funny." matt continues.
"they threw you in." aurora and scott say in unison.
"i - i yelled that i can't swim, but nobody's listens. i go under and i swallow water, and no one cares. and i see these bodies underwater. i - i see jessica's got her hands down dean's board shorts. tucker's grabbing kara. and i'm drowning. i'm dying, and they're laughing. all of a sudden, i was just lying by the pool. and lahey is right above me, and he says. . . he says, 'you tell no one! this - this is your fault! you don't know how to swim? what little bastard doesn't know how to swim? you say nothing! you tell no one. no one.'"
aurora looked at the boy with sad eyes, actually feeling bad.
"and i didn't. i didn't tell anyone. and i would see them at school, and they wouldn't even look at me. i'd wake up in the middle of the night. i'd gasp for breath. and my parents, they thought i was an asthmatic. they - they - they even gave me an inhaler. they didn't know that every time i closed my eyes, i - i was drowning." matt continued. "you know about that little white light that they talk about, you see when you die? well, i didn't see anything. just darkness. everything was dark. but then - then came the argent's funeral, and everything changed."
aurora furrowed her eyebrows, looking at scott.
"i was taking some photos, and then purely, by accident, lahey gets in one of the photos. i look down at the screen of my camera, and i just had this unbelievable rage that fills up inside of me, and iΒ  just - i look at him, and i - i wanna see him dead. and the next day, he actually was. you know, einstein was right. imagination is more important than knowledge. it was like something out of greek mythology. like - like the furies coming to punish orestes."
aurora raised her eyebrows, not expecting matt to know anything about greek mythology.
"you have no idea what i'm talking about, do you?" he asked the pair.
"was - was he the guy who stabbed out his eyes?" scott asked.
"that's oedipus, you dumbass!" matt yelled, getting closer to scott.
"the furies are deities of vengeance." aurora spoke, making scott and matt look at her. "th - their tears ran of blood, and, uh, they had snakes for hair. if there was a crime that had gone unpunished, the furies would do the punishing."
"i'm impressed, rori. you don't seem like the type of girl that would be into greek mythology." matt said.
"it's aurora." she corrected. "only friends call me rori."
matt scoffed before he turned towards the door, looking at jackson, who was half the kanima.
"jackson is my fury. you know, when i saw him the next night, it was like this bond had been cemented between the two of us. i knew he had killed lahey for me, and i knew he would do it again. so i went to tucker's garage. i even paid for an oil change. and guess what. he didn't even recognize me. so when he wasn't looking, i took a shot of him with my camera. and in a few hours, he was dead. so i took more pictures."
aurora thought back to what allison told her. is he gonna make jackson kill allison now?
"all i had to do was take their picture. and jackson would take their life.
suddenly, all of the lights went off and the alarm started blaring. the back up lights came on, scott, aurora, and matt looking around.
"what's that?" matt asked. he then aimed the gun at the two werewolves. "what's going on?!"
"we don't know." scott answered, looking at aurora who shrugged.
before anyone could respond, the sound of guns going off appeared. the windows broke as bullets flew through. scott and aurora quickly moved out of the way, going to hide behind the multiple desks that was in the room.
"i have mix feelings about them being here." aurora mumbled, already knowing that it was the argents.
she heard something his the floor before a small explosion went off, the room starting to fill with smoke. she let out a cough but quickly got up, following scott as he ran out of the room and into jackson.
they watched as he fell before they ran over to derek and stiles. aurora ran to derek but he shook his head, starting to slowly sit up from the floor.
"take him." he told scott. "go!"
scott quickly wrapped stiles arm around his shoulders, aurora doing the same so that it would be easier for them to drag the paralyzed boy. they dragged him out the office and into the hall. they turned into another room, aurora quickly locking the door so that jackson wouldn't be able to follow them right away.
that happened about four more times until they got into an interrogation room with a stronger door. they sat stiles down in a chair.
"don't move." scott said.
"he doesn't have a choice, bud." aurora said.
"you know what i mean." scott told her before the two exited the room.
"we gonna split up?" aurora asked, closing the door.
"yeah, yeah. yell if anything happens." scott told her.
"you do the same." aurora said, the two of them going different directions of the hallways.
aurora was about to turn the corner but stopped, allison popping out from behind the wall, aiming her crossbow at the hastings girl.
"allison." aurora said, releasing a sigh.
"where's derek?" she asked.
"what are you doing?" aurora questioned.
"if you're not going to tell me, then get out of my way." allison demanded.
"allison." aurora said, looking her in the eyes. she saw anger and pain.
"where is he?" allison repeated, aiming her crossbow up.
"allison. . ." aurora said, cautiously taking a step forward. "don't do something you'll regret, later."
"aurora, if you're not gonna tell me -" allison started.
"i get it, okay?" aurora said, taking another step closer. "i get that you want to blame someone right now. a - and get all your anger out. but it's not gonna bring her back."
aurora saw allison's eyes start to water,Β  it she still had that same emotionless face on.
"you don't wanna be around me, right now. so stay out of my way." allison told her before she walked past and down the hallway.
aurora continued to go the original way she was going, but stopped. the hairs on the back of her neck stood up, feeling this tug towards allison. aurora followed it, sniffing the air so that she could follow allison's scent.
she quickly ran into a garage that was full of deputy cars, seeing allison laying on the ground, matt hovering over her.
"you should've given me a chance." matt started. "cause remember how i said i'm not the kind of guy that would say something like, 'well, if i can't have her, no one can.' it's not totally true, because allison, if i can't have you, no one can."
matt then looked over his shoulder, hearing a noise. aurora was about to go after him, but chris walked in, looking up at her. he then looked down at his daughter, picking her up bridal style.
he nodded at aurora before he walked through the door she came from, aurora going to follow matt. she had walked in to see matt punch noah in the face, knocking him out.
max looked into the hall, seeing aurora slowly walking in. she quickly shifted, huffing and puffing as she glared at matt. he glared back at her before he looked over to the other door, the kanima hissing at aurora.
max looked at his niece and shock.
aurora growled back, the kanima running towards her. aurora grabbed the kanima and throws it on the desk behind her. the kanima wrapped its tail around her neck, throwing her across the room.
"aurora!" max yelled, not even being phased at the fact that she's a werewolf.
the kanima walked over to her slowly, but was stopped by derek, who stepped in front of it, shifted as well. aurora smiled, pushing herself from the floor.
the kanima went to punch derek but he went under its arm, grabbing the metal chair and pushing it to the kanima. the reptile pushed back, sending derek over the desk and to the floor.
it then looked over at aurora, going to scratch her with its claws so that she could be paralyzed, but she dodged it. the kanima continued to swing its claws at her, adding its tail to the mix, but she kept dodging it.
derek had gotten up from the floor, but the kanima looked towards him. it jumped onto the cell bars before it kicked derek to the floor, the hale man sliding against the floor and hitting his head on the wall.
the kanima then looked at aurora, quickly wrapping its tail around her neck again, lifting her up into the air. scott quickly ran in, shifted, pushing his claws into the kanima's back. this made it release aurora, the girl gasping for breath.
she looked at scott, watching as he threw the kanima to the floor. it then crawled away, derek quickly following it.
scott looked up at aurora, asking if she was okay. she nodded.
"scott, are you okay?" melissa asked her son, who's back was towards her. "scott?"
he slowly turned around to face his mother, the woman looking at her son in shock. she backed away into the corner of the cell, making scott run out of the room. aurora looked over at max, seeing that he was already looking at her.
"are you okay?" he whispered, knowing he could hear her.
she nodded, giving her uncle a small smile before she quickly stood up, exiting the room. she ended up running around the whole building before she stopped, seeing derek pressed against the wall.
"what're you doing?" she asked him.
"shh!" he said, pulling her against the wall. "listen."
"what are you doing here? it wasn't supposed to happen like this." the voice of scott said, aurora furrowing her eyebrows.
"trust me, i'm aware of that." the voice of gerard said, making aurora raise her eyebrows.
"i've done everything that you've asked of me. i'm part of derek's pack, i've given you all the information that you wanted, i told you matt controlling jackson -" scott listed.
"and leave him to us." gerard interrupted. "help your friends. leave matt and jackson to me. deal with your mother. go."
aurora heard something fall to the floor.
"you dropped this." scott said, aurora assuming he had picked up whatever had dropped.
"go!" gerard demanded.
scott then walked down the hall, walking right past derek and aurora. she stepped from the wall, watching as scott disappear down the hall.
"there has to be more to the story. scott wouldn't just work for him." aurora said.
"yeah, like what?" derek asked.
"i - i don't know. but i know scott. he wouldn't do that." aurora told him.
