chapter 16

"Mommmmyyyyy.....Mommaaaaa.....Mommmmmyyyy." I snorted as I heard Riley's voice through the baby monitor as she woke up from her nap.

"Your turn." Hayden said as she tossed a piece of popcorn in her mouth and continued flipping through the magazine sitting on her lap. "I woke her up this morning."

I pressed pause on the movie I was watching and walked upstairs and peeked into the nursery to see Riley sitting in her crib singing a song "I waked up from naaaap but now I'm stucked in my criiiiib. Where oh where did my mommies goooo. Momma!" She said when I pushed open the door and walked into the room.

"Hey love bug" you ready to get out of here I asked as she nodded her head and reached out to me. I carried her to the changing table and changed her pull-up before I sat her on the ground. She ran to her crib and grabbed Leo before she began jumping up and down in excitement.

"What we do now?" she asked as she took my hand and followed me out of her room. "Mommy!" She yelled as we made it to the living room and she jumped into the arms Hayden was holding out to her.

"Before we do anything else we wanted to talk about some rules." I said "We wanted to wait until you were big but it doesn't look like you plan on doing that anytime soon." I said tickling her under her chin.

"Mmmm no big! No rues!" She said hiding her chin in Hayden's chest.

"You don't have to be big but you do have to have rules, they are nothing crazy though so don't worry." I said with a small smile.

"Are you ready?" Hayden asked before she began. "First you must always listen to what mamma and I tell you, we know what is best for you and everything we do is for a reason. Next remember your manners simple things like please and thank you and being respectful. There is no screaming, yelling, throwing tantrums or hitting. Always clean up after yourself. Never lie to us. And most important always be honest with me and Mamma if you're ever upset or uncomfortable you have to tell us we won't be mad okay?" Hayden said as she sat Riley on her lap. "Now something to remember is that all of our rules are always up for discussion so we can always add some or take some away."

"Otay." She said looking at me with a smile. "I try to member that. We pay now?"

"Go ahead baby." Hayden said setting her down and letting her run off to the toy box sitting in the living room. "Do you think we should go out and do something before dinner tonight? We've been stuck in the house for a while, she's starting to get restless."

"Do you think she's ready?" I asked "Maybe we should take it easy for another day or two."

"Dana." Hayden said with a sigh. "It's already been two days and she was perfectly fine yesterday. We can't lock her up forever. We don't have to do anything crazy why don't we take some snacks and dinner and go take a walk to that little creek you like. You can teach her how to catch frogs and you guys can play in the mud."

"You don't want to play with us?" I asked with a smile as I pulled her to me.

"No." She said crinkling her nose "You guys can get dirty without me, I'll just watch."

She kissed me and pulled away before she quickly brought Riley upstairs to change her into a new set of clothes. I was packing a backpack when Riley came running downstairs with a huge smile on her face.

"Mommy said we is gonna catch some fogs Momma!" She said jumping up and down. "I so e'sited!"

"We are sure going to try." I said with a laugh. Hayden locked the door behind us as I helped Riley slip on a pair of purple rubber boots. "Lets get out of here." I said as I grabbed Hayden's and hand and followed behind Riley who was skipping a few steps in front of us.

When we finally walked up to the creek Riley was practically vibrating in excitement talking about all the frogs she was going to catch. "You realize that we will be lucky to catch one frog today, right?" I said as Hayden laid out a blanket. "I doubt her little reflexes are fast enough to catch a frog, and her yacking probably scared most of them away!"

"I think you're forgetting that she's two." Hayden said as she pointed behind me with a laugh. I turned around and laughed with her when I saw Riley crouched down on the shore of the creek hopping in a giant puddle ribbiting like a frog. "I think we're going to be okay." Riley added patting me on the back.

"Come pay with me Momma!" Riley said looking up at me with mud covered hands. "We be fogs."

"Yeah Momma go be a frog!" Hayden said as she sat down on the blanket. "I'll keep your spot warm."

I ran down to the creek and jumped into the water making a big splash causing Riley to let out a huge shriek in excitement. "Gain! Gain!" She said jumping up and down! Riley and I spent the rest of the afternoon playing on the shore of the creek until Hayden called out to us.

"Alright mud monsters! It's starting to get late." She said as she packed up the backpack. "and It's almost someone's bedtime so I think it's time we call it a night."

"Yeah Momma." Riley said as she splashed in the mud one last time. "It ah'most yo bedtime."

"Come on you." I said as I chased her out of the mud and she ran in circles around Hayden. When we made it back to the house Hayden made us take off our clothes at the door so we wouldn't track mud into the house. "Thank you for today." I said as I hoped into the shower and she started to wash Riley in the bathtub.

"Of course." She said as I heard Riley giggle and splash in the water. "I understand why seeing her like that was hard for you. You just needed a little push to see that she really is okay. Come on bug." I heard her say as I turned off the water and stepped out of the shower.

I walked into our bedroom and quickly got dressed so I could meet Hayden and Riley in the nursery before she got put down to sleep. I walked in as Hayden was sitting down in the rocking chair with a heavy-eyed PJ dressed Riley on her lap. "Goodnight peanut." I said kissing her forehead "Momma loves you."

"I wuv you too Momma." Riley said as Hayden guided her head to her chest and she started nursing. It didn't take long for Riley to fall asleep and Hayden and I tiptoed out of her nursery with the monitor clipped to our belt.
