2. What a Strange Woe

Enid Sinclair

"I can't believe it, Yoko! Wednesday Addams is my roommate!"

"And exactly why are you happy about it?" Yoko stared at me weirdly.

"Because I get to become friends with her," I replied happily.

"Girl. Haven't you heard what Addams is capable of?" My friend raised a brow.

"Yeah. So what? Maybe she needs a friend," I defended Wednesday, even though I never met her.

"That's the last thing Wednesday would want. You're clearly asking to be murdered by her."

"She would never hurt me. I mean, she is dating that Galpin boy. Like, how did he even pull her, and how is he even alive?"

"I have no idea, but I suggest you be careful around Wednesday. Who knows what she has under her sleeves," Yoko shivered in fear of what my roommate is able to do.

"I bet she has knives hidden in her sleeves. Oh! I forgot. I gotta write on my vlog about being roomies with Wednesday Addams. I wonder what my followers will say about it," I pulled out my phone to begin typing on my vlog.

"That you're going to die soon," the vampire plainly responded.

"Yoko!" I gently smacked her upper arm.

"What? I'm just stating facts. Besides, I'm one-hundred percent sure that Wednesday would want a dorm for herself rather than share one. But, we'll see what she does," Yoko shrugged her shoulders.

"If she does try to kill me, I will text you to come save me."

"Not when it comes to fighting her. You're pretty much on your own," she shook her head side to side.

"What a great friend you are," I remarked jokingly.

"I know," Yoko stuck her tongue out playfully.

"Anyways, I'm going to my room to get settled in. I already brought my duffle bags to the dorm after my family left."

"Don't hate me for saying this, but your family are jerks. They literally dropped you off, tossed your bags, and left. They didn't even bother to stay and help you," Yoko poured her hatred out.

"I'm not going to hate you Yoko. I know they can be jerks at times, but my parents told me they had something urgent to do. I understood and carried my own bags instead. Plus, I'm a werewolf. I have strength to bring my duffle bags to the room. So don't worry," I gave the vamp a reassuring grin.

"Hey Tanaka, Sinclair! Are you guys up for another year at Nevermore?" Divina, a siren and a friend of Yoko, proceeded to us.

"I'm always up for another year here. I've been staying as long as two centuries y'know," Yoko smiled, showing her fangs.

"I'm most definitely thrilled this year! Weems switched the rules around by letting all kinds of outcasts stick together, and I'm happy to get to know more people face to face. In fact, when club rush begins next week, I'm starting my own club approved by Principal Weems for anyone to join," I admitted.

"Woah really? Count me in on joining. What's your club based on?" Divina's eyes lit up.

"Us freaks. I acquired a classroom where members can meet on Mondays and Fridays. On Mondays, we have a lecture learning about each other on how we're different and the same. On Fridays however, we do fun activities that everyone can participate in," I clarified my idea of what my club will be like.

"The best part about it is that Enid assigned me as vice president," Yoko smirked proudly.

"Wow. Good for you Yoko. I'm sure the club will grow popular. Tell me the name of the club, and I'll get as many people to join."

"Freaky Friday," my friend announced.

"Dope. I hope that it all goes to plan. I got to head out soon, so I will see you two later. Take care Enid, and text me when you get the chance Yoko," Divina flirtatiously winked at Yoko before walking away.

Once Divina was out of the picture, I couldn't help myself from smiling deviously at the two females. They're hopelessly in love with each other, yet they haven't realized it nor confessed to one another. It's very amusing to see them interact, but I usually feel like the third wheeler most of the time. Someday, they'll shout out their feelings and get together.

"Did she just wink at me?" Tanaka slowly turned her body to me with a tint of redness on her cheek.

I chuckled lightly and replied, "Yes she did. How very romantic."

I mischievously wiggle my eyebrows up and down to mess with Yoko. She turned even more red and nudged me on the side carefully. I laughed a little more and patted the back of Yoko's shoulder.

"I can't wait till you have a crush on someone, so I can tease you as much as I please like what you are doing to me just now," Yoko dreamed.

"Good luck with that because I need to find someone cute and just my type," I beamed radiantly.

"Whatever Enid. You should go and meet your new roommate. Who knows if she tore up your side of the room from the amount of plushies you have stacked up," it was Yoko's turn to hold up a smug expression.

My eyes grew wide, thinking that Yoko could be right. I rapidly dismissed myself, saying bye to my friend, and headed over to my room. I prayed that Wednesday didn't trash my bedroom as I made my way through the hallway. My legs took me as fast as it could until I reached for the door belonging to my dorm. I opened it right away and saw that nobody was inside. Everything was left the way it was beforehand. I deeply sighed in relief and entered the room, shutting the door behind me.

I noticed that two of my duffel bags have been laying on my bed ever since I dropped them off. I was certain of myself that I'll put away my clothes after I meet Wednesday. Thinking about Wednesday is making me grow impatient because of how much I want to see what she looks like in real life. Those that I have met in Jericho who have the same class as Wednesday have told me what my roommate dresses like. According to them, she wears all black and never seen her wear anything with color. She always has her hair made into two braids with bangs covering her forehead. That's all the description I've heard so far.

I ambled to my desk and pulled out the chair under it. I sat down and drew my phone out of my pocket. To kill time, I decided to finish writing in my vlog about Wednesday and I being roommates since I got distracted by Yoko. I typed out a few sentences and posted a picture of the evidence from my schedule. As it was uploading, I heard a creak coming from the door and someone entering.

My heart began racing in excitement, knowing that my mysterious roommate had arrived. I placed my phone down on the table and spun my body to reveal Wednesday standing from across the room. Those who had a class with Wednesday were right about her appearance. She is wearing dark clothing with two braids resting on her shoulders. Her eyes are so dark and tedious that it makes it look like she's a serial killer. Her expression was nothing but serious and scary. The only thing that threw me off was her height. I thought she would be tall with tattoos and scars all over her body. How can someone so small ever seem deadly?

I got up from my chair and put on my signature grin. I hurried over to Wednesday and stopped just enough to leave a gap between us. Now, I was finally able to start my introduction and get to know the Addams.

"Howdy, new roomie! You probably know my name already from your schedule, but just in case you don't, I'm Enid Sinclair," I introduced myself.

"Looks like I don't need to introduce myself if my name is on your paper," Wednesday pointed out with a dull tone.

"No worries! I heard so much about you, Wednesday Addams. I think we are going to be the best of roomies and friends," I softened my voice.

I took a big step and held out my arms for Wednesday to embrace me. That's what I do a lot when I meet new individuals to make them feel welcomed and safe. But this time, it was different. As I came towards my short roommate, she stepped back. She didn't say anything but rather looked at me as if I'm crazy. I quickly put my arms to my side, getting a hunch that Wednesday doesn't want to hug a stranger she just met.

"Sorry. I'm guessing you're not a hugger," I apologized, feeling guilty that I might've made her feel uneasy.

"That and I'm allergic to colors," Wednesday gave me a reason.

"I'll take note of that," I reminded myself to not give Wednesday anything with color on it.

"Are you a normie?" Wednesday interrogated me.

"Nope," I extended my claws to show Addams that I am not a normie.

"I'm a werewolf. Funny thing is, I don't look as scary as I should be."

"Not one bit," my roommate kept her response short.

"Yeah... So, what do you think about the new rules Principal Weems changed?" It was my turn to ask a question.

"It's stupid. Not only do I have to share a room with someone that is the complete opposite of me, I'll also need to be in a classroom filled with imbeciles. What's worse is that I have a hint of how you act, and therefore, won't get any peace and quiet."

"Aww, come on. I'm not that bad."

"You are. You're already becoming annoying and all the colors of the rainbow you have on your side of the room is making me want to vomit. I suggest you don't bother me a lot. If you don't obey my instruction, you better count your days until it is time I bury you alive in a graveyard," Wednesday warned me as she gave me dagger eyes.

For some odd reason, I didn't feel like I was in danger. It didn't even phase me at the fact that Wednesday is willing to take away my life. I would've been completely terrified for my safety. However, I sensed that my roomie may not do such a thing to me. I could be wrong, but I'm going to find out regardless.

"Okay!" I replied sweetly with a smile plastered on my face.

Wednesday rolled her eyes in annoyance. Before either of us could move an inch, our door opened. We both twisted our bodies around to see four individuals with black clothing. A tall man passed through with two cases in his hand. One was shaped like a giant violin case and the other was a huge piece of luggage. He put it down beside Wednesday's bed and left the dorm.

I assumed the three people standing by the doorway were Wednesday's family. A woman who I believe is her mother is quite tall and is wearing a long, black dress. Next to her must be the father that is wearing a suit. Lastly, a little boy with black and white striped long sleeves and long shorts is beside the father. That must be Wednesday's brother.

"Ah, my little poison ivy! How are you handling things now that Principal Weems decided to switch the regulations?" Her father was the first to speak.

"Hello mother, father. I believe that making myself expelled from this school will solve all of my problems that I have currently," Wednesday spat out with no hesitation.

"That won't be happening dear. I see you made a friend," the mother of Wednesday slowly whirled her head to me.

I gulped anxiously and gave her a nervous smile. Now all eyes are on me, and I'm starting to freak out inside.

"She's not my friend. She doesn't mean anything to me."

Ouch.

"Please excuse Wednesday. She's having a rough day from what has been publicized this evening."

"It's no worries. I-I'm Enid Sinclair. Wednesday's roommate," I accidentally stuttered while I stuck my hand out.

"Morticia Addams. This is my husband, Gomez, and our son, Pugsley," Morticia shook my hand before I went to Gomez and Pugsley to shake theirs.

"It's nice to meet you guys," I politely expressed.

"Likewise dear. I'm convinced that you're able to befriend Wednesday. She prefers to be lonely, but maybe she'll warm up to you and become best of friends," Gomez quirked his lips upward in determination.

"You shouldn't apply false hopes to someone who will trust anything you say, father," Wednesday remarked.

Gomez jogged over to me and whispered into my ear, "I'm rooting for you to become her first, real friend. I see some potential in you kid."

Hearing that from my roommate's dad made me beam energetically. There is hope to get Wednesday to like me after all. I can't wait for it to happen, so I can rub it in Yoko's face.

"What did he tell you Sinclair?" Wednesday slightly furrowed her eyebrows and folded her arms at the same time.

"That I should leave you guys to say your goodbyes. Again, it was great meeting you all. I aspire to see you three someday."

"We feel the same way. Farewell, Enid," Morticia did a little wave.

I waved goodbye back to her, Gomez, and Pugsley before I dismissed myself out of the room. Once I was far away from the dorm, I couldn't help but exhale all of the oxygen I held in during that encounter. Not only was it nerve-racking, it was also heartwarming. Wednesday's parents are so sweet and kind. Way better than my own. She's so lucky to have them.

I was a few rooms away in the halls when I realized that I left my phone on my desk. I whined quietly and thought it would be best to do something productive that can distract me once the Addams family leaves. I managed to come up with an idea until I spotted a hand crawling its way around the hallway. It had stitches all over and no other body part connected to it. I was the only one in the halls which means I'm alone with a hand. I never experienced anything like this before. Curiosity built up inside of me. Thus, I squatted down and called out the hand.

"Excuse me?"

The hand somehow heard me and spun around in my direction. I have so many questions as to how a literal hand can hear and see where it's going. I would love to ask, though it would be rude of me.

Yes?

The hand put itself into a fist and pushed down to reply back. Good thing sign language class came in handy. Pun intended.

"Are you looking for someone?" I questioned.

Yes. A girl named Wednesday.

"Oh! I know where she is. She's five rooms down to the left. I'm her roommate by the way. The names Enid. What's yours?"

Thing.

"Interesting. Are you a male or female?" I grew more inquisitive.

Male.

"And what happened to the rest of your body?"

Who knows? It's a huge mystery.

"Got it. Well, Thing, I'll let you go find Wednesday. Will you be staying here in Nevermore?"

I have to. I assist and help Wednesday with anything she wants done.

"Sounds like torture," I emphasized.

Tell me about it. Anyways, see you later.

Thing began crawling away, using his fingers to make his way to mine and Wednesday's room. I couldn't help but flash a grin for a moment. Meeting the Addams family made me feel better than I did after the event between my parents and I. Wednesday is different from her family, that's for sure. I simply don't mind it. She's strange but a good kind of strange. What Gomez has said to me is now stuck in my head.

'I'm rooting for you to become her first, real friend. I see some potential in you kid.'

My confidence has peaked to the highest level. My goal is to get Wednesday to be my friend. Even if she kills me, I'll accept it. As long as I don't step over her boundaries, everything will go smoothly. Easy peasy.
