Chapter 7: Hearts Set A Flutter

Skye let out a surprised yelp as she felt two paws firmly placed against her rump, pushing her the rest of the way up the pillar. Although awkward for sure, this allowed Chase to keep a secure hold on the pilot pup and keep her at the level needed to tie the ribbon.

"Y-y-you- Is t-t-that g-good?" Chase spluttered out as he held her up. He was so thankful Skye couldn't see him right now. The German Shepherd's heart was beating in rapid intervals as his face lit up red from sheer embarrassment. "Just breathe.... Don't overthink...."  he told himself. The police pup didn't mean for his front paws to slip and change places. But there he was; paws placed around HER butt as she did her work above him. Despite the situation, Chase couldn't help but admit it DID feel kind of good, even if he also felt much more shame and guilt. He wasn't doing it for selfish purposes. "It's just....part of the job, I think."  he reassured himself.

"Just....h-h-hold me t-there." Skye let out, feeling flustered herself. It took everything inside the Cockapoo to not look down at Chase as he held her rear in his paws. Lucky for her, she had the bow to tie around the pillar. But that didn't help much. As Skye tied the bow, she couldn't stop thinking of the current situation she was in. Her cheeks were rosy red and she felt butterflies in her stomach. "Okay, okay.... Don't freak out." Skye thought, "It's not that bad. Hopefully Chase is having as much fun holding my butt as....I.... Oh my gosh! What am I thinkiiing?!?!"  The pilot pup shook her head as she tried to clear her mind, feeling herself getting carried away with her thoughts.

Skye tied the final knot of the bow, securing it's place on the pillar. "All d-done. You can l-let me down now...." she stumbled over her words slightly as she informed the German Shepherd of the now completed task. Slowly but carefully, Chase moved back and lowered his front paws -still holding Skye's rump - until she safely made it down. The second her hind paws touched the roof, Chase let go of her butt instantly and took a few steps back, utterly embarrassed by what he just had to do. Once all four of Skye's legs were on the roof, she turned around to face the police pup.

"I'm sorry." Chase quickly spoke up, looking to the ground in shame. "I didn't mean to- My paws just slipped....It wasn't.... you-"

"Don't worry Chase," Skye cut him off, "I know it was an accident and you didn't mean harm. What matters is that we got the bow up like planned."

Chase finally looked up at Skye and noticed she looked a little flustered as well with some pink to her cheeks. "Okay." he eventually agreed as he joined her, picking up the next bow as they walked to the second and final pillar.

Skye turned her head to the side and looked at her friend. "Well, what we did on the last one seemed to work. Let's do it again for this one."

"Alright. Sounds good." answered Chase as he walked up to the side of the pillar.

Skye just looked at him before elaborating what she meant, a light blush on her cheeks. "When I went on your back last time I just slipped in your grasp. What I meant was, well, I'll lift myself up against the pillar and you can push me up by my....butt....and hold me up to tie the bow. Y-you know? Just l-like we j-just did...."

Chase looked at her with wide eyes as his heart sped up in pace. "O-o-okay." he stammered as he moved away from the pillar. The police pup moved back as Skye walked up, propping her front paws against the cylindrical piece; bow firmly held in her right paw. Skye turned her head around awaiting her friend to do his part.

Chase walked up behind her and froze, giving her a worried and unsure look as their eyes met. "A-are you s-s-sure about t-this? You s-s-still want me t-to push y-you up by your....by your...."

Skye tried to give him some reassurance, but her cheeks told a different story. "Yes, Chase. I'm sure. Just....just push me up by my butt and we'll get this bow tied."

Taking a deep breath as he mentally prepared himself to do it all over again, Chase placed his paws firmly yet gently on Skye's rump and pushed her up the side of the pillar until she got to the middle. If he was nervous before, he was practically hyperventilating at this point; his heart feeling like it was running on overdrive with it's speed. Chase thought that Skye asking him to hold her up by her butt would help ease his mind. Instead, it just made it worse. Much worse.

After what felt like an eternity for him (although only about one minute had passed), Skye completed the knot and asked Chase to let her down. As he did, the police pup was beginning to visibly shake a little from embarrassment and his racing heart. Skye turned to him to congratulate him on his part in the process.

"We did it! Good job, Chase." Skye complimented him, the butterflies in her stomach begging to subside again. They were both embarrassed from the whole ordeal, but she could tell that he was more then she was.

"Y-yeah. We d-d-did." Chase replied nervously, his heartbeat beginning to slow down a little. The two pups made their way back across to the roof to the hatch, Skye entering first with Chase behind her closing the hatch door on his way down. Finishing his decent from the stairs, the police pup carried his legs in long strides to catch up with Skye. As he approached the stairwell leading to the ground floor, he saw her sitting at the top looking towards him.

"Wait here for a minute." Skye commanded as Chase slid to a stop in front of her. She looked him in the eyes as he tried his best to do the same.

"Y-yes?" the police pup said, heartrate picking up once again as he inquired why she stopped him.

"Chase. You need to relax." Skye began as she walked up and placed a paw over his heart, causing the German Shepherd to jump slightly. "Your heart's running a mile a minute! Why are you still so worked up?"

Chase decided to let it spill. He was still on edge and there was no use trying to hide it from her. "I-it's just- I mean- The- Ugggh. It's about earlier. With the bows. I'm still very sorry for touching your butt. Please don't be mad at me. It was an accident. I swear."

Skye's head clicked as she instantly understood what had him in a tussle. She proceeded to wrap him in loving hug much to his surprise. Chase was a little caught off guard, but returned the hug as well. The Cockapoo sighed internally as she felt his heartbeat begin to slow down. She blushed a light shade of pink as she felt the German Shepherd's warmth against her.

"Shhhhhh. It's all good...." Skye soothed as she gave him a squeeze. "I know it was an accident. I was a little caught off guard and startled as well, but it did work out for both of us. You aren't bad AT ALL, Chase. If anything you kept me from falling down. Also, if I WAS uncomfortable, would I have asked you to do it again on the other one?" She looked up at the police pup with sincere eyes.

"No." answered Chase as he finally had the courage to look into her eyes directly, starting to relax a little as the anxiety went away.

"Exactly," concluded Skye with defiance as she leaned her head back against his warm chest. A smirk then came to her muzle as she decided to play around with him. "Besides, you seemed to be enjoying yourself down there in your position."

"W-WHAT!?" Chase broke the hug at her teasing. "N-n-no I d-didn't. I w-was ner-er-ervous the w-whole t-t-time!" He desperately tried to defend himself as his face started to heat up.

"Oh really?" Skye continued her onslaught, "Because something tells me you wish you could touch my rump allllll day!"

"I.... No I- I...." Chase attempted to spit out as he became a smothering mess of pure humiliation. The whole time Skye was laughing her head off as she rolled around on the ground.

Ohhhhh my! You should see your face right now." the pilot pup wheezed as she got back on all fours, much to the embarrassment of the police pup. "Here," she snickered as she approached him. "Since you feel so bad about touching my butt earlier...."

Skye proceeded to raise a front paw and swat the German Shepherd's left hindquarters. Chase let out a high-pitched yelp as the Cockapoo's paw made swift contact, stinging ever so slightly. He turned his head to gaze at her with blazing red cheeks and eyes wide in shock. The pup opened his mouth a little to say something, but just stood there in disbelief.

Skye giggled at his flustered reaction and stuck her tongue out at him playfully. "Race you out front!" she quipped as she dashed down the stairs towards the entrance. In all honesty, she was quite embarrassed by her actions and flirtacious hints she gave off (she herself didn't even know she had it in her), but at the same time didn't care. Chase embarrassed himself earlier, though not intentionally, and now she had done the same. In Skye's eyes, both were even now. "Thank goodness the others weren't there to witness any of that." the pilot pup thought as she reached the bottom of the stairs, dashing down the hall towards the entrance doors. Between Chase holding her up by her butt to fix the ribbons and her swatting his rear, the other pups would have never let them forget had they all witnessed it.

Meanwhile at the top of the stairs, Chase was still trying to process everything. He rubbed his rear as he made his decent down the stairs, doing his best to cool his heated face down. His mind was a whirlwind as he thought about everything he had just gone through. "Why did that all have to be so humiliating," thought the police pup, "She'll never let me forget this.... Oh well, at least she's not upset. Plus I've got stuff of my own to use against her. Hehe. Dang, she's more cute and playful than I thought."  A calming smile finally formed on his face as he thought about his love interest. He had a boost of confidence, but was still nervous and conflicted on if he should ask her out the next day. The German Shepherd made his way towards the door as he saw his favorite Cockapoo exit first.

Skye ran out the door laughing like she didn't have a care in the world. Ten short seconds later,  Chase came out the doors as well; fully composed and smiling with glee. The two pups made their way to Ryder and Mayor Goodway (as well as Chickaletta), who were still waiting out front near the flower bed.

"We did it, Ryder!" Skye announced out as she stood in front of her leader.

"How's it look?" Chase said walking up to him as well.

Ryder gave an approving look at the two as he patted their heads. "They look perfect, pups. Just ask Mayor Goodway."

"Oh yes!" the mayor cried out joyfully as she walked over and pet the two pup's backs. "Now the whole building is finally officially decorated. Top to bottom, it looks so pristine! Thank you, THANK YOU!! The PAW Patrol has saved the day once again!"

"Anytime, Mayor Goodway." Ryder accepted the praise as he shook the mayor's hand. "If you have any problems, just yelp for help!" Chase and Skye let out a happy bark in agreement.

"Thank you again, PAW Patrol." Mayor Goodway gave the group farewells as they turned to leave. "You all have a safe trip back."

The wo pups and Ryder waved back. "We will. Have a good evening, Mayor."

"Goodbye, Chickaletta." Skye and Chase waved as the chicken looked up at them from pecking the ground, blinking and clucking at the group. Ryder and the two pups mounted their vehicles and drove back to The Lookout.

By the time the three returned home, the sun had begun to set, leaving strips of orange and red in the horizon. They parked their vehicles and entered inside where Ryder proceeded to make dinner for the night. Once completed the boy called the pups, who came running in with swift paws and rumbling tummies.

Over dinner, the pups exchanged what had gone on between the two groups during the afternoon/evening. Chase and Skye told the rest about their adventure with Ryder as they helped redecorate City Hall. They left out some details about the rooftop part for obvious reasons. Both the German Shepherd and the Cockapoo were still too embarrassed to even talk about it one-on-one.

Everest and the other male pups talked to Chase and Skye about their activities from earlier (minus the part of the group making 'plans' for the two pups). The group had played some more and raced around the obstacle course from earlier. Everest had challenged the boys on Pup Pup Boogie; winning against each pup aside from Zuma, of whom she tied the game with. Rocky had showed the group some modifications he made to a skateboard, which consisted of rockets and smoke bombs. They took it out to the skate park and tried it out, taking turns with Rubble going first, followed by Marshall, Zuma, Rocky and finally Everest. To say the least, the time was spent with high speed wipeouts and smoke and sparks flying all over the place.

A little more exhausted from the day's activity, Chase and Skye excused themselves after the meal and headed to bed. Giving goodnights to Ryder and the rest of the pups, the two walked out to the puphouses, eager to lay down and get a good night's rest. As the two approached their respective residences, they turned and faced each other with warming smiles.

"You did amazing today, Skye." Chase complimented, "Couldn't imagine this team without you! So, uhm, you have a nice night...."

"He-he. T-thanks. You did g-good too." Skye stuttered over her words at first, smiling dreamily and wooing internally at the police pup's praise towards her. "You have a wonderful night too, Chasey-Wasey."

The two pups froze in place as their eyes widened.

"Did.... Did she just call me 'Chasey', 'Wasey'....?" thought Chase, feeling a little warmth cross his muzzle as his mind did mental backflips at this new nickname.

"OH. MY. GOSH!!!!" Skye's brain set off alarm bells as her cheeks turned a dark crimson. "Did I just call him 'Chasey-Wasey' out loud?!"

Both pups just stared at each other for a solid minute, too embarrassed to move or blink.

"Uhh.... G-goodnight...." Chase finally found the strength to speak, taking a small but awkward step back with a quirky smile.

"Y-yeah..... S-s-swee-eet d-drea-eams..." Skye eventually stammered out, feeling more flustered and embarrassed than she ever felt possible.

The German Shepherd and Cockapoo turned away from each other and quickly rushed into their puphouses, each burying their heads into their pillows as they did the best they could to calm their pounding hearts and get a some sleep.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Daaaaawwwwww.... They're so cute!" Everest cooed as she watched the two pups dash into their puphouses. Marshall, Rocky, Zuma, Rubble and her had gone to the top of the tower to watch the two from the 360 degree window. The group couldn't hear what Chase and Skye said, but they saw their actions and reactions.

"Man, they really are so awkward around one another." observed Rubble.

"Agweed, dude." Zuma added, Rocky nodding as well.

"That's why we have a plan." Marshall declared to the group. All the pups huddled around in a circle by where they just observed Chase and Skye go into their puphouses. "We all know the plan and we each have our own parts to set up." The Dalmatian passed out note cards around the circle, each pup's name written on the top with specifics for each member. "If we start after breakfast, that should give us enough time to get everything ready. Rocky?" Marshall turned to the Mixed Breed.

The recycling pup took the cue and started passing out small, circular pins. "These are some little mics/speakers, invented by your's truly." He bowed in sarcasm as he continued. "We can use these to communicate with each other and keep up with our progress. That way, we won't run the risk of Chase and Skye overhearing us had we just used our Pup Tags." Each pup worked together to help secure the mic pins to all their collars.

"Sweet, dude. This is cool!"

"Yeah. I'm so pumped for tomorrow."

"This plan should work for sure."

"They both deserve each other. Just hope we can make them see that."

"Awesome! Morale is high." Marshall addressed the group as everyone howled and barked, the Dalmatian joining in too. "Now, let's all get some shut-eye. We'll need it since we start after breakfast." With that pups headed down the elevator and out the front doors, saying goodnights as they walked to their respected pup houses. Everest and Marshall stopped right outside their puphouses, which were right beside each other.

"I'm so excited for tomorrow." Everest looked at the fire pup as their eyes met. "Funny that you pointed out your observation to us. Now we can finally get those two together. You have such a big heart." She walked up to Marshall and wrapped were front paws around him in a loving hug.

Marshall was a little taken aback, but melted into the hug as he wrapped his arms around the Husky in return. He breathed in her sweet scent as he held her close, overjoyed by the affection he shared with the pup of his dreams. The fire pup leaned in towards her right ear, causing it to flick in response.

"Goodnight, Husky-Wusky." Marshall gently whispered into her ear with sincerity.

Everest's cheeks blushed slightly as she giggled quietly in response. "Goodnight, Marshmallow." the Husky whispered back as she nuzzled the side of Marshall's face, which he returned by nuzzling her back as well. Breaking the hug slowly, the Dalmatian and the Husky shared one last caring smile before they turned and walked into their puphouses.

Plopping down on her bed, Everest instantly fell asleep with her smile still plastered on her face. Her head was filled with happy thoughts, from the excellent plan of FINALLY getting Chase and Skye together, to just how sweet and caring her favorite fire pup always treated her. She felt like a princess whenever she was around him.

Marshall lay his head down on his pillow as he drifted off to sleep, thoughts of tomorrow's plans on his mind. Before he entered dreamland, he let out a content sigh as he thought of Everest and the new nickname she had given him.

"'Marshmallow'....I like it."
