Chapter 5: Pups Make A Plan

Chase and Marshall returned to the table with the rest of the pups and sat back down, joining in on the conversations between them all. About five minutes later, Ryder and Jake returned from the kitchen with refreshments, making several trips to serve all the pups. Aside from the hot cocoa, the two boys had also made some grilled cheese sandwiches and chicken noodle soup, as well as placing some bowls of water for the pups to drink as well.

"Thank you for the food." Rubble said gratefully, munching down at his sandwich. "I guess we really worked up an appetite."

"No worries," Ryder chuckled, "You all are such good pups and did great out there. Me and Jake figured you all could use some food."

"This is soooo good!" Zuma praised as he pulled on the gooey cheese after taking a bite from his sandwich. Rocky sat beside him with his head down towards his soup bowl, lapping up the hot substance with his tongue.

"No problem, little guy." Jake assured, pointing playful finger guns at the Chocolate Lab. "I knew you all would love my infamous grilled cheese skills!"

Everyone laughed as they continued to chow down. Between munching on grilled cheese and sipping the cocoa (which was a little awkward for the pups, but they managed with both paws around the mug), the group joked and had a fun time discussing things from personal life and the topic of Valentines Day.

"So," inquired Ryder to Jake, "You going to have a busy day tomorrow since the chairlift is fixed and it IS Valente's Day?"

The resort owner finished chewing his food before giving a response. "Well, not really. Most of the peeps in the city usually do the typically date stuff: go out to eat, see a movie, walk in the park. Just the usual. There's like, a few who choose to take their special someone's up here on the hills, but other than that, the traffic up here is mainly a little slow."

"Oh! Could Everest spend the night with us down at The Lookout since you won't be busy?" Marshall asked a little too eagerly. He wanted to spend some time with the Husky of course, but he also had other intentions that revolved the rest of the pups as well.

"What do you say, Jake?" Ryder turned his head to the man in question.

"I don't see why not." Jake answered without even having to ponder his reply. "It's going to be slow, and she deserves some time with the other pups, especially after the great job we all just did. Plus, I'm sure my little Husky-Wusky would have fun down there in some warmer whether, wouldn't you?"

"Jaaaaake!" Everest moaned and hid her bright red face at the mention of her owner's nickname towards her. "Thank you, though. I really do."

The other pups and Ryder had a little laugh. Marshall couldn't help but grin mischievously at Everest's nickname and reaction. Husky-Wusky. Boy, was he going to tease her with that from now on. Plus he thought it was cute, so there was that too.

"Yay! More girl time!" cheered Skye at the decision.

"Hey, us boys aren't that bad." defended Rocky, before getting an unamused look from the pilot pup. "Well, most of the time. Hehe."

Finishing up their food, Jake took everyone's dishes into the kitchen and placed them in the sink to be washed later. He then returned back to the dining area with everyone else as thy got out of their seats.

"Thanks again for the help, dudes." Jake smiled as he fist bumped Ryder and gave it a firm shake. "Me and Everest totally couldn't have done it without you guys."

"No problem Jake." assured Ryder as they broke the handshake. "You know what we say: If you're ever in trouble, just yelp for help." The pups barked and howled to emphasize his point.

"Need anymore help around here?" Marshall questioned, standing beside Everest.

Jake looked around the lodge, scratching his head in thought before returning his gaze to the group. "I think we're all good here. Chairlift is all fixed so I can open the resort back up; probably won't get much business for the rest of the day, though. I can clean those dishes in the kitchen. Soooo.... I'd have to say everything is all done here."

"Sounds super!" Marshall yipped as Everest flashed him a sweet smile.

Ryder turned to the seven pups. "You pups ready to head back down to town?"

"Yes Ryder."

"You bet!"

"We are when you are."

With everything accomplished the pups and Ryder waved goodbyes to their friend. "Have fun with others down there." Jake bent down and gave Everest a hug. "Thanks for helping us repair our shed."

"You're welcome." The Husky said as she returned her owner's hug. "And don't worry about me. It's going to be so fun with Skye and the boys!"

Breaking the hug,  Everest finished her farewells and followed the others outside to their vehicles. As Ryder and the others walked towards their rigs, she walked towards her snowmobile parked by the deck of the lodge. On her way, Skye came up to greet the Husky with Chase following right behind her.

"You ready for some fun?" asked the Cockapoo with a big smile and sparkling eyes.

"Yeah." added in Chase as he stood beside the pilot pup, looking towards the Husky in front of them with kindness written upon his face. "It's cool that you decided to come to The Lookout with the rest of us."

Everest giggled at the two over their excitement. "Oh, you have no idea. Haven't got to really hang out with you pups since Christmas and New Year's. The warm weather down on the ground will also be welcoming too."

"I know. This snow and wind gets cold fast! Brrrrrr." Skye stated shivering, before she leaned into Chase's side and rubbed her head against his neck for warmth. The German Shepherd looked down at the Cockapoo before flashing an awkward smile at the Husky across from them. Realizing her actions, Skye quickly pulled away from Chase, cheeks pink from embarrassment. She let out some nervous chuckles as her eyes darted between the snow pup and the police pup. Everest couldn't help but snort and cover her muzzle with a paw to keep the laughter in at the two pups; giving Skye a sneaky wink.

"Anywaaay," began Chase, doing his best to break the tension. "Let's go follow the others. Not going to get down by standing here."

"Agreed."

Chase and Skye turned around and walked to their vehicles as Everest hopped into her snowmobile. Together they all followed Ryder down Jake's Mountain and took the roads through Adventure Bay. Several minutes later, the group crossed the bridge to The Lookout and parked their vehicles around the base of the tower, dismounting as they converted back into puphouses.

Everest parked her snowmobile between Skye and Marshall's puphouses, stepping down as her's converted as well. The pups all joined together as Ryder came out from The Lookout; having just parked his ATV underneath in the garage. As the pups began conversing with each other, Ryder's Pup Pad began to ring.

On instinct, Ryder answered the call to see that it was the town's mayor. "Ryder here. How can I help you, Mayor Goodway?"

"Oh, hello there Ryder," answered the mayor with a slightly dramatic worried tone. "I need some help down here at City Hall. Some of the Valentine's Day decorations have fallen down or are barely hanging on. Could you and the PAW Patrol come on down and fix it?"

"Of course,  Mayor." answered Ryder. "No job is too big. No pup is too small!" He hung up the call and swiped the screen to call the pups. Before he did, he looked up at the pups who were but fifteen feet away from him. He grinned as he called the Pup Tags.

"PAW Patrol, to The Lookout!"

The pups perked up at the call. "Ryder needs-" Chase cut off as he and the others looked up to see Ryder standing nearby.

"Hey, why didn't you just call us over?" asked Rubble as he and the others walked towards the door to Ryder.

"Just having fun with you pups." chuckled the boy as joined the pups in walking towards the elevator. When the group entered the elevator, Marshall was to distracted by Everest and tripped over Ryder's foot, causing him to tumble and land on his stomach.

"Sorry about that guys." said the Dalmatian as he got up.

"It's all good Marshall," began Ryder, "I guess you could say that you had your foot in the game." Everyone laughed at the corny remark as the elevator started it's way up to the briefing room.

Everest poked the fire pup's shoulder with a grin as she stood beside him. "Some little pup needs to watch where he's going."

Marshall rolled his eyes sarcastically before he smiled as well. "Oh I've got it under control." He leaned in to her ear with a whisper. "Husky-Wusky." Everest let out a fake pout with heated cheeks at his comment, the Dalmatian standing there with a content look on his face.

Once the elevator reached the top, the pups lined up as Ryder lowered the briefing screen. "Looks like we've already got another mission pups." the boy briefed the pups. "Here's what's going on." He proceeded to explain the situation that Mayor Goodway had told him, giving out details to what would need done. The pup's leader than scrolled through his Pup Pad to pick who he'd need for the mission.

"Chase. I'll need you to block off the area with your cones and help set up the ground decorations that fell down." Ryder commanded.

"Chase is on the case." the police pup said with authority.

"Skye," Ryder continued, "I'll need you and your wings to attach the banners that came off the building, as well as other decorations that need it up high or below."

The pilot pup flipped in excitement. "Let's take to the skies!"

"The rest of you pups can go about your business." Ryder addressed the other pups. "We shouldn't need you, but keep an ear open for your Pup Tags if I do have to call you. Now let's get those decorations back up for Mayor Goodway. PAW Patrol is on a roll!"

Ryder ran to the fire poll and slid down as Chase and Skye went down the slide to their vehicles. The remaining pups watched out the windows as they saw the three ride their vehicles out the driveway and into the town. Knowing that this was as good a time as any, Marshall took the time to address the pups of his idea.

"Okay guys - and girl - hehe," the fire pup said, "Put your gear back and meet in the lounge. We need an emergency meeting!"

Marshall's comment raised the other pup's attention, all wondering what he could be talking about. They rushed to the elevator and took it down to the changing room, before taking it back up a level to the forth floor where the lounge was located. The pups entered and plopped down on some bean bag chairs that were positioned around in a complete circle.

"So what's the big deal, dude?" asked Zuma.

"Yeah," commented Rocky, "What's got you in such a tussle?"

"It's gotta be big since you called a meeting." added Rubble.

Marshall calmed the group as eyes were laid on him. "No worries, no worries. No one's in trouble. Just has to do with two pups on the team."

The other pups leaned in at the fire pup's inquiry. "Spill it." Zuma pushed.

"Who and what is it?" asked Everest.

"Alright," began Marshall, "Here it is...." He took a deep breath before revealing what was on his mind.

"I think Chase and Skye have romantic feelings for each other."

Silence filled the rest of the pups as they all stared at him with wide eyes and looks of shock on their faces. A few seconds passed before Zuma jumped up on his bean bag, pumping his paw and throwing it up in the air with a holler.

"YES!! CALLED IT, DUDE!" the water pup yelled before pointing a paw at Marshall. "I've been thinking the same thing too. I just knew something was going on between those two."

"I know, right?" the Dalmatian agreed as he walked over and gave Zuma a hearty high paw.

"Hmmmm...." thought Rocky as he rubbed his chin with a paw. "I suppose that could be possible. But do you have any evidence to build your case?"

"What Rocky said," Rubble sided with the Mixed Breed, "Have you heard Chase or Skye say anything about how they really feel towards the other?"

"I do have some, guys." Marshall defended his theory, laying out out some examples. "Let's think about it for minute. Look at how those two act around each other. Chase is really obvious with his - at least in my eyes. Every time he's around Skye, he acts super caring and not as rough like with us boys. Grant it, she's a girl, but still; that pup acts waaaaaay more caring and kind towards her than you regularly would. Like, the rest of us treat her nice, but we don't go overboard to length's that he does."

The other pups nodded and "uhm-hm'd" at the Dalmatian's explanation .Rocky clapped his paws together as a light bulb flipped on in that big brain of his. "That's a good point, Marshall. I do know what you mean now since you've pointed it out. Another thing I've noticed is how much he worries for her safety out on missions; constantly checking in on her when things get difficult. Definitely does it more to her than the rest of us. I thought it was because Chase didn't think Skye could hold her own compared to the rest of us; even though she always pulls through in the end. But now....well....it might just be because of some 'feels' like you said."

"Hey, I'm starting to see what you both are getting at." Rubble said to the rest with brightened eyes at this new revelation. "All that you said just flew over my little head this whole time, but now since you've given an explanation, it's all coming together. Man, I cant believe I never noticed. This whole thing is like a puzzle in a way; all these little pieces coming together: Chase's worrying, his over-caring actions, his nervous demeanor around her. It's all forming a bigger picture now. But wait!" the construction pup's eyes lit up as he encountered a road block in his thoughts. "What about Skye? Do we know if she feels the same?"

"Oh, good thought," pipped in Rocky, "I haven't been really paying as much attention to her side in all this. Sorry." Marshall opened his mouth to explain what he thought but Zuma beat him to it.

"She's a lot hawder to obsewve, but I'm 99% suwe she feels the same way towawds Chase." Zuma explained. "Let me lay it out. Skye definitely isn't as dense as us boys - no offense. We all know giwls are mastews at picking up emotions and feelings. Soooo....she obviously knows of the hints Chase is giving hew. She totally digs it, dudes. Skye get's all swoozy when Chase goes out of his way for hew, or wowwies out on the field. Plus she gets a little newvous awound him as well; I've seen it a few times. Thewe was one time when me, hew and Chase wewe playing at the pawk. She was all fine with me, but when she was awound Chaaaase, she got all  fidgety and newvous. Plus, who can fowget the time we sang that fwiendship song not to long ago. The part whewe the two wewe singing togethew and Skye leaned hew head lovingly against Chase's chest? Litewal shipping matewial, I'm telling you."

"You do have a point there." confirmed Rubble as the others chewed on Zuma's words.

Marshall turned to Everest as she let it a little giggle. "How about you, Everest? You got any knowledge on these two you can add? I know you and Skye hang out when you're able to."

"Wellllllllll." Everest began as she slowly spun her right paw around clockwise, thinking of what she knew before stopping. "From the times I've interacted with Chase, I could definitely tell he has a thing for Skye. From his actions to the quick glances he'd give her, it soon became a little obvious to me. Especially the times he'd just stare at her when he thought no one would notice. He's honestly kind of adorable how he acts towards her; so lost in his love for her."

The Husky sighed at the thought of puppy love as the four male pups around her let out a few chuckles and rolled their eyes.

"As for Skye," Everest continued, "I can definitely confirm, 100%, that she has feelings for Chase. She hides her feelings well for the most part, but I've got her to let her guard down around me. For starters, she talks about Chase more than the rest of you. No shade on you boys; she does talk about you all as well. But she brings up Chase a lot when we're talking about the five of you. In one of our discussions she was telling me something about Chase and said something along the lines of 'he was being his cute self' as she described what he was doing."

"That's golden." Zuma commented at the information being given to the group.

"I know," resumed the snow pup, "Skye's complimented his eyes and said they look very nice. She's called him handsome a few times - which was amusing - and said he's the bravest and most caring pup she's ever met. And she blushes A LOT when Chase bumps into her or rubs up against her by accident. So yeah. Since you were wondering, Skye does feel the same way for Chase."

Marshall picked up after Everest with more examples of his own. "While we're talking about this stuff, I did ask Chase a little about Skye back at the lodge. When we were washing our paws in the bathroom, I asked him if he had any pup for Valentine's Day. He said he didn't, so I decided to just wing it and asked if he liked Skye. He got so nervous and shy, he couldn't look me in the eye or say anything. He just stumbled to find any words and blushed a little bit.

"Man, that basically confirms it." chimed in Rocky. "If he wasn't after Skye, we would have just said no easily."

"If they both like each other so much, why don't they just get together?" Rubble asked the group. "They both feel the same, so they should just tell and get it over with."

"Well they both appeaw to be supew shy towawds each othew." observed Zuma.

"Correct," agreed Rocky, "Skye's not as blatant with her feeling as Chase. And if he hasn't figured out any hints she's given him now, Lord knows he's not going to realize it as soon as tomorrow."

"What if we made a plan to get them  together?" suggested Marshall, all eyes now on him. "Hehe, just a thought."

"What do you mean by get them together?" asked Rubble with a raised eyebrow. "Like make them set down and confess to each other?"

"No. Not like that," the Dalmatian clarified, "I mean like set up a situation for the two, and let them do all the chemistry and bonding naturally."

"I see what you're getting at," Everest assured her friend. "Hmmm. That could work, now that you mention it."

Rocky perked up at the idea. "If we pull it off right, there's a high chance it could work and get them together."

"Plus tomorrow is Valentine's Day, so it'd be as good a time as any." added Rubble.

"Sounds good," said Zuma, "But what is the plan? What exactly awe we going to do?"

Everest rubbed her chin as she pondered. "There are many ideas to choose from."

"Exactly." agreed Marshall. "Alright. Let's brainstorm ourselves a plan. Three, two, one, GO!"

For the next thirty minutes, the pups started thinking and discussing ideas, pen and paper getting involved as they wrote down the details of how to get Chase and Skye together. The pups scribbled furiously as they all tossed around ideas back and forth, making sure to include every possible scenario and detail they could predict and plan for.

After all the suggestions were confirmed and pre-planned, all five pups huddled around the final three pages they had written down. The plan was complete. The group read through the final draft of their scheme, before going back and reading it a second time to make sure they didn't miss anything.

Marshall's eyes lit up as a smirk adorned his muzzle. "This plan is going to be epic!"
