Chapter Thirty-Seven

~Nobody's POV~

The unicorn, which has been circling the far left side of the camp, where the tent that Thea is in has been pitched, is restless. Archer had insisted that he had stay by the firelight while we went down to the lake with most of the others. Miryen had not liked this; he liked to be where the young Velah was, all the time. When Archer had gone to Earth, Miryen had suffered greatly.

Like a white specter, Miryen trots behind some brush, lowering his noble head down and nipping up a few buds.

There's a crackle from the brush behind him. The lily flowers immediately drop from his mouth as his neck rises, sinewy and long.

Videl regards the unicorn with a long stare. A hungry stare.

Then, he smiles, his eyes darting behind Miryen. Miryen's ears snap up. The girl is in that tent. The girl Archer had told him he must protect at all cost.

With a nervous snort, Miryen paws the ground with his hooves. Videl moves forward quickly, springing like a cat, and Miryen's legs rise up in a tremendous rear. The hooves catch the Velah's chest, sending Videl backwards. On a normal being, Miryen's sharp hooves may have impaled him, but Videl leaps back up with the grace of a shadow.

"Your pretty master isn't here to save you," whispers Videl, his fangs bared.

Miryen whinnies shrilly, trying to warn the others in the camp.

He is cut off sharply as Videl leaps, then with a jerk of his supernaturally strong arms, he has broken Miryen's neck.

With a tremble, Miryen falls. Videl, his grin widening in blessed satisfaction, leans down and begins to drink from the unicorn's soft, glowing neck.

A few minutes later, Videl stands back up, long and lean in the beginnings of the moon. Its light shines on the bloodied, crimson fangs.

Not looking once more back on the fallen creature, Videl turns and seems to glide silently towards the tent. He avoids the campfire easily enough; the flickering flames hide him in shadow and Steve doesn't notice him.

Videl's slanted, beautiful, feline eyes adjust to the darkness of the tent immediately. Thea is lying in a corner, wrapped up in several blankets, her breathing heavy. The bandaged wound on her side is no longer bloodied- which is fortunate.

He crouches down next to Thea and reaches out to move the hair from her face. She is so out, she does not wake. Videl's smile widens. It's a greedy smile.

Only a few minutes later does Thea wake up. When she looks down, she realizes why. Her arms are tied behind her back, forcefully, painfully, as are her legs.

She opens her mouth to scream, but when she sees Videl, slouched lazily in a corner, watching her with a smirk, she is so petrified, no sound comes out.

"Very smart," says Videl in a hushed tone. "Screaming would make me so much more...vindictive."

He smiles, his bloodied fangs hanging over his full lips.

Thea whimpers.

"You may be wondering why I am here. Let me ease your conscience now. I do not planning on killing you." He raises one sharp eyebrow, "Yet. You see, I need you to retrieve the pearl, not anyone else."

She opens her mouth, and Videl interrupts.

"I am aware that there is a party that has just set out not half an hour ago. Never fear, I will give you plenty of time to stop them."

There is an obvious question in Thea's eyes, but she is too terrified to speak.

Evidently though, Videl knows what it is, "Why do I want you to do it?" He drums his fingers against another pillow, "Would you like my answer?" He smiles even more widely, so that with his bloodied fangs, flashing eyes, and mussed hair, he looks positively wild.

"It's because this is fun."

Thea is silent.

"You humans are such fun to hunt. Taken Miryen, that stupid creature went down with hardly a fight." Videl licks his lips, "Not that I am complaining."

Thea's lip trembles.

"Oh and don't worry, Thea. When I am through with regaining my power, I will get to see for myself how...tasty you might be."

She is so petrified, she is now shaking horrifically.

"But in the meantime, I would not try to anger me again. Or else face my wrath. No wait," he raises a finger, "If you displeasure me once more, I will kill your sister. Before your eyes. And then, after you obey me, I will kill you. Kicking, screaming." His smile is now demented, "The screams will be the most delightful. So...shrill, so...piercing."

Thea's breathing is growing erratic.

"And never fear, I am plenty aware of my brother's betrayal. I do not care, as he is only helping to get what I want. But when it's done, Archer will pay." Videl's lip curls, "Strongly."

As Videl stands, Thea tries to crawl away from him, but her bonds prevent that. Videl grabs her arm and pulls her face up; she is now crying, "Shall I leave a reminder of how it would be so unwise to play with my ambitions?"

Thea shakes her head frantically, her eyes wide like a spooked horse's.

"Are you sure?" Videl asks, "It would be no trouble at all."

Thea is shaking her head so hard, she cricks her neck painfully.

"Well, I think I should...just in case..."

And then, Videl pushes aside some of the fabric from Thea's neck, revealing the faint, circular scar from six months ago. He pays only the slightest bit of attention to it before sinking his fangs into her soft skin. Blood dribbles down her neck. He covers her mouth to stop her screams.

Moments later, Videl tilts his head back. He stands and smiles down at Thea, who is sobbing frantically.

"Good girl," he whispers with a smirk, and then, in a flash of smoke, he vanishes.

That's when Thea begins to scream.

*

When Loki and Steve stumble the tent, Thea is screaming and kicking so crazily, they freeze. Then, they spot the ropes around her limbs, and the blood trickling from her neck and in a terrible moment of understanding, they realize what has happened.

While Steve runs for Kyle, who is guarding about a half mile or so from the camp, Loki rushes to Thea's side. Her screams become banshee-like as she tries to kick him away, her eyes wild.

"Shhh, shhh darling, it's only me," Loki says, whipping his dagger out from his belt. Within seconds, he has sliced the ropes from Thea's arms and legs as she continues to shriek, "Shhh, you're all right."

And then Thea has thrown her arms around him, sobbing uncontrollably against his chest. Loki, taking a deep breath, says quietly, "You're all right. You're safe, I'm here."

"He...stop...he...it...it hurts!"

Gently, so that she hardly feels his fingers, Loki tilts back her neck to reveal the puncture marks on her pale skin. His own blood boils, but he manages to say calmly, "Kyle will take care of you. So will I."

"He's going to kill me!" she shrieks.

Loki seizes her hand, "Thea, look at me. "Look at me right now." When she lifts her face, he says fiercely, "Videl is not going to kill you. Do you understand me?"

"You can't...the lake- stop them from going to the lake!!!!" her screams are making Loki's head throb.

"Why, Thea, tell me why."

In between sobs, Thea gets the story out. At around this time, Kyle bursts into the tent. When he sees Thea, wrapped in Loki's embrace, he lets out a string of curses.

As Kyle kneels down next to Thea, Loki says sharply, "Stop the lake party. Now."

"But they're-"

Loki interrupts Steve, "I don't care. Stop them."

Steve nods curtly, then hurries from the tent.

But when Loki rises to follow, Thea grabs his arm in her trembling fingers. Although she doesn't say anything, Loki gets the point.

"Very well Thea," says Loki as Kyle begins to hurry through his bag, "I shall stay. Just calm down, my love. You're safe now."

Thea leans her head against Loki's shoulder as Kyle begins to administer pressure on the neck punctures. She whimpers- the bite stings horrifically.

Kyle squeezes Thea's arm, then says in a low voice, to Loki, "I'm going to kill that son of a bitch."

Loki, breathing hard, like an enraged bull, says in an eerily calm voice as he strokes Thea's hair, "It seems we have formed an alliance then."

Kyle raises his eyebrow as he takes out a tube of antiseptic.

Loki glances down at Thea, whose shoulders are still heaving with sobs, "He has hurt my girl. There is nothing in store for him now but death."

I dont think I have hated a character of mine more than I hate Videl...
