*Quote One: You’re never too old to have some fun.*

“Taylor, did you remember that we are going to go to The Chestnut Park today?” Keri asks me over the phone with hope in her voice. When my response was silent, she groans. “We are supposed to go egg hunting… remember?”

I sigh. Doesn’t she know we are like fifteen years old? What fifteen year old goes egg hunting? I mean, seriously. I used to go egg hunting with my Dad when I was little. Yeah, that stopped when I was thirteen. He was too busy with work so he couldn’t take me. My mom wasn’t around so, we just stopped buying eggs.

“I can’t.” I lie. “Claire invited me to the movies.” declining her offer. I sort of felt bad for lying. But I didn’t want to be caught egg hunting by some people that go to our school. I would want to embarrass myself.

“Oh… but today is Easter! We were supposed to go Egg hunting….” She says miserably.

I bite my lip. “Come on, you know we are too old for that.” I say, rolling my eyes at her comment, even though I know she can’t see me.

“You’re never too old to have some fun.” She argues, getting more irritated by the second.

“Yeah, I suppose.” I shrug.

“Anyway, what movie are you going to watch?” she asks. I knew she was just trying to change the conversation and we all know she’s not really interested in the movie I’m watching.

“Days of the Dead,” I still tell her. My voice was a little more upbeat than it should’ve been. Claire and I hadn’t really planned on going to the movies… but I plan on asking Claire if she’d be up for it. “Channing Tatum is going to be in it!” I say excitedly, continuing with my lie. “Claire and I have been dying to see that movie for weeks!

“That’s demonic.” She says strictly, bursting my happiness. Not that I didn’t expect it anyway.

“Everything is demonic to you. It’s a scary movie, which is fake, but engaging.”

“It’s still demonic.” She says brushing me off. “Why don’t you watch Happy Shoes?” she suggests.

“Is Channing Tatum in it?” I ask.

“Well… No…”

“Then no thanks. I got to go. Claire is calling me.” I lie again.

“… Bye.” She says, abruptly hanging up on me with her voice filled with anger. I wonder what’s wrong with her; I didn’t do anything to offend her… I think.

God, too many lies in one phone call. I didn’t intend to lie, things just happened.

"I don’t think I can go to sleep tonight.” Claire says plopping herself on my pink with black small bows bed.

“Me either.” I say sighing as I kick off my shoes into the mist of my closet.

I called Claire right after the phone call I had with Keri and Claire was up for it. I wasn’t surprised, Claire will literally come to anything she’s invited to. No joke.

“Channing Tatum was so good in the part when he was killing his brother.” Claire says gushing.

“Don’t spoil it for me!” Someone says walking into my room.

“What is she doing here?” Claire whispers to me.

I looked up at the entrance of my room to see Keri standing there. I bite my lip nervously. I overlooked telling Claire about Keri coming. I didn’t want Keri to feel left out so I invited her. It was the nice thing to do. “Oh, I invited her to come after she finished Egg hunting.” I whisper back.

Keri stands there unnervingly, twiddling with her, I Am a Genius bracelet, staring into the depths of my floor like she was mesmerized by it.

“Wait…” Claire says giggling. “Wait a minute! You still go Egg hunting?” Claire asks out loud, with her attention turning to Keri, unable to control her laughter.

“Yeah, what’s wrong with that?” Keri says, putting her hand on her hips with her eyebrows furrowed.

“Well, it’s for little kids.” Claire states, getting up off my bed and walking over to Keri to look her in the eyes.

Oh no, I really didn’t like where this was going. I think we are too old for this, I mean, it’s childish. If Keri wants to egg hunt, let her. What was the big deal?

“Guys…” I warn, trying to interfere. I was used to this. This kind of thing happens ALL the time.

“Who says there is a precise age when we should stop celebrating Easter? That is the day Jesus rose from the dead. It’s a disgrace how you guys won’t simply go Egg hunting for the fun of it.” Keri rants, tears almost flooding from her eyes.

“Guys, I think-“I interrupt but no one heard me.

“Are you done?” Claire asks, stepping closer to her face.

Before Keri could reply I step in and walk in-between them. There’s no way I’m letting them continue this.

“Guys, that’s enough! Do you really want to spend your Sunday night arguing?” I ask.

“Well…” Claire says.

“Claire!” I shout, I then sigh and look at the both of them.

“This has been happening on every occasion I invite you guys too! Just…” I say, growing tired of the subject. “Just cut it out.”

A big silence took place. It wasn’t just awkward for Keri, given the fact that she’s standing because there was no empty seat in my room and Claire basically put her name on my bed. I didn’t know what to say. Claire starts humming and Keri mumbles math facts or something. I was willing to try anything to break this silence.

“Do you guys want to do each other’s nails?” I try, looking at them with hope.

“Painting nails is bad for your health.” Keri says blankly, walking away from Claire’s glaring eyes and sits on my black rug.

“I’m not in the mood. And I like the color I have on.” Claire responds, playing with my pillows.

Buzz kills.

“Do you guys want to play hide-and-go seek?” Keri asks piping up all of a sudden. I grin. At least she was trying. That’s not something I could say for Claire.

“How little can you be?” We are way too old for that!” Claire says snapping at her.

Keri stands up off the floor and wipes the dust off her pants which causes Claire and me to stare at her. Claire shouldn’t have said that… When I was about to scold Claire, Keri beats me to it. “Then I’ll go home then. Thanks for inviting me; it was a waste of my time.”

“Well I sure didn’t invite you.” Claire says, looking down at my pillow that was in her lap. Keri puts her hand on my golden doorknob before Claire says,

“Wait!”

“What?” Keri and I say in unison. I say it with worry that Claire will say something mean, but Keri says it with anger in her voice.

“We can still watch Dora!” Claire shouts, bursting into laughter while holding her stomach.

I nod my head. I knew she would say some witty comeback. Claire is the one to always play people like that. I didn’t know what to say or how to defend Keri. I didn’t think anything I could say would help the situation.

“You are never too old to watch Dora!” Keri yells, storming out of the room and slams the door shut.

That was not supposed to end that way… I look at Claire who looks unaffected, like she didn’t just hear someone yell at her. She kept playing with the thread on my pillow until I finally spoke up.

“Don’t you think you were hard on her?” I say when I was sure Keri wouldn't be able to hear us anymore.

“Nah, she’s just a third-wheel to us.” Claire says, matter-of-factly.

“Yeah…” I agree blindly.

Wait, I didn’t mean that…

Did I?
