Chapter 14 - Keefe

"Okay. I'll take you two to Havenfield." Sophie pointed to Tess and Darry. "My house tonight." I was looking forward to Edaline's mallowmelt. It's so good, I wish she was my mom. Anybody would be better than the one I got. I scored low, on getting a good family.

"'Kay." Pony said, "Where am I going?"

"That would be me!" I declared dramatically. "You probably wouldn't want to live at Candleshade. I'm not. I'm bunking at Everglen." If he wanted to go to Candleshade, I'd scream.

"That's where we were before, right? Biana and Fitz's house?" he asked.

"The Vacker home." I confirmed. I don't know how much use Pony will be in my pranks. He's too kind. He doesn't have an ounce of mischievousness in him.

"Okay." Pony said.

"You know, I was thinking." I said.

"That's never a good thing." Sophie said, "Keefe and thinking usually result in detention." I was insulted, but at the same time, it was good to see Sophie making jokes.

"Or running off and joining the Neverseen!" Tam shouted, "The enemy!" But Tam, I was ready to punch him.

"I wanted answers. I got them, and I got back, safe and sound." I said. I glared at Tam, wishing for an easy way to get him off my back.

"Break it up." Sophie said, stepping between us.

Tam scowled at me, and I saw the shadows wavering, as if they were about to smother me. Lucky for me, he stalked away instead.

"Well, Bangs Boy has a strong dislike for me." I sighed. "Where was I?"

"Thinking." Pony said.

"Oh, yeah! Thanks. Anyways, I talked to the Forklenator, and he said that you have a bit of alicorn DNA." I was stoked to tell him my discovery of an awesome nickname!

"And?" he asked.

"Ponyboy is similar to Horseman. Which is similar to Alicorndude!" I crowed. As soon as the words left my mouth, I saw his face drop. I felt awful, as Tess ran towards him.

"Pone?" Tess' voice was concerned. "Pony? Pony!" She wrapped her arms around him, and he started to cry.

"Ssh." Soda whispered, rubbing his back. "You say the word, and I'll kill him."

"It's okay. I'm fine." Pony muttered

"You ain't fine, little buddy." Darry stood over them, his arms crossed. Like he's protecting them from the Neverseen.

"I'm sorry." I scuffed my toe against the ground. "I didn't realize that you were so sensitive."

"It's fine." he said, "I could use some chocolate cake, though."

"Chocolate cake?" I furrowed my brow. "That a dessert?" If so, why would he want that, when there's Edaline's mallowmelt?

"Yeah." Tess said, "You're clueless."

"Why would you want chocolate cake, when there's mallowmelt?" I asked.

"Because. Chocolate cake for breakfast is awesome." Two-Bit shouted, "Especially with Mickey and beer." Two sounds like a good person, even if he's a little obsessed with Mickey. Whatever that is.

"We need to go to Havenfield. Edaline makes the best mallowmelt." I said. My mouth was watering at the thought of having some of that decadent dessert. Gooey, and warm, and just simply awesome.

"Where is Havenfield?" Tess asked.

"A light leap away." Sophie said, "Same as last time. Concentrate on yourself only. Don't think of anything else."

Fitz pulled out his pathfinder, and held it up. Sophie pulled out her home crystal, and leapt away with Tess and Darry.

"Alright. Keefe, you can take Pony and Soda." Fitz ushered us into the beam, and I let the light whisk me away, towards Edaline's amazing mallowmelt.

"What is That Boy doing here?" Grady growled.

Pony turned to me, confused. "What's wrong?"

"Well," I said, "I might've forgotten to mention that Edaline's husband hates me."

"Hates you?" Tess looked paler than she had moments before. I could feel the fear radiating off of her.

"Oh, yeah. It's because I joined the Neverseen."

"And you're a prankster." Sophie added.

"Yeah. That too." I muttered.

"Well? Sophie, why is That Boy here?" Grady asked.

"Edaline's mallowmelt." I said.

"Nope. No way am I letting you have some of her mallowmelt." Grady said.

"Grady, come on. Get over it. Do you really want to give yourself a bad reputation in front of them?" Sophie gestured to all the greasers standing around, before crossing her arms.

"I guess they can have some. But not That Boy." Grady glared at me. I have to deal with him and Tam. Life sucks.

"Grady." Edaline came in, frowning at him. "Be nice."

"What does mallowmelt taste like?" Tess asked.

"It's amazing. Gooey, sweet, delicious." Grady said, all his anger forgotten. "Here." He handed her a large slice of mallowmelt. She took one bite, and her eyes widened.

"This is real good." she said, "Pone, you gotta try it."

Grady started handing mallowmelt out to the greasers, as Edaline cut it.

"Oh, hell." Dallas muttered, "This is better than chocolate cake."

"No way." Two-Bit said, "This is good, but chocolate cake is better. Especially with beer and Mickey."

"The three of them combined are better than mallowmelt." Dallas said. He casually slung his arm around Linh pulling her into his chest.

"Hey! Hands off my sister!" Tam shouted. He flicked his wrist and the shadows grew around Dallas.

"Call off your shadows." Dallas growled.

"Hands off." Tam ordered Dallas. His silvery eyes glinted, just daring him to keep his hands on Linh.

Dallas smirked, before kissing Linh.

"Grady," Edaline whispered.

"On it." Grady closed his eyes, and I knew he was going to mesmerize Dallas and Tam.

Dallas and Tam smacked themselves in the face. They started doing that repeatedly.

"Dal." Maria said, "Dal, you okay?"

"Grady. That's enough." Edaline said, "You should stop now."

Dallas stopped smacking himself. He glared at the room, unable to figure out who had made him slap himself. "When I find out who did that, I'll kill them." he growled.

"Dal, you good?" Maria asked.

"Yeah, I'm good, kid." Dallas ruffled Maria's hair, before taking a large bite of mallowmelt.

"Edaline, we were hoping that they could all sleep here tonight." Sophie said, gesturing to everyone in the room.

"Oh," Edaline's eyes roamed over us. "Of course. Just don't get too crazy."

"Foster's always crazy." I said, "It's part of her personality."

"Keefe!" Sophie scolded me.

"Can I have more mallowmelt?" Tess asked.

"Sure." Grady smiled at her, and grabbed another piece for her.

"This is real good." Pony said, "Can I have some more?"

"Of course!" Edaline smiled, before grabbing more mallowmelt. "I need to bake some more."

"I'll help!" Grady said.

"You'll eat half of it before anyone else can get to it." Edaline said, smiling.

"No I won't." Grady said, but I knew he would. Who wouldn't?

Edaline started pulling out the ingredients to make mallowmelt.

"Thanks so much. This is real good." Darry said.

"You're welcome." Grady said.

"Hey! What's your name?" Dallas shouted, "Greaser or Soc?"

"I'm Grady. I don't know what that second question was."

"Money wise, a Soc." Sophie said, "Spirit wise, a greaser."

"Savvy. Name's Dallas Winston." Dallas smirked.

"How old are you?" Grady asked.

"Seventeen." Dallas said.

"Oh!" Sophie exclaimed, "You'd be eighteen, by Elvin counting."

"I ain't no minor no more!" Dallas crowed.

"What do you mean, Elvin counting?" Tess asked.

"Elves count age from your ID, your Inception Date." Sophie explained.

"So that means..." Tess whispered.

"You're all about nine months older than you thought you were." I finished.
