Chapter 37

Many people from Nevermore stand up with an umbrella inside the cemetery. it was currently the funeral of Mayor Walker after he was murdered.

Wednesday stands with an umbrella in his hands, a stern yet poker look on his face.

'I enjoy funerals.'

He looks around to see the people's gloomy looks and saddened eyes while a woman continues with her speech.

'I've been crashing them since I was old enough to read the obituary section

Wednesday's eyes shift to the girl beside him. Y/n's been looking down at the coffin for a while now, still not sinking in what happened.

he felt her emotions and quickly made a decision to comfort her. he grabbed her hand and softly held it.

this action didn't budge the girl, instead, she intertwined her hand and fingers with his.

'Mayor Walker was murdered, and I know the killer is here.'

'standing innocently among us, plotting their next move, and watching everything I do.'

Wednesday's eyes continued to wander until his gaze landed on Xavier.

Xavier turns his head around, causing him to have his gaze contact with Wednesday's.

'I know I'm close to the truth.'

'I have all the pieces of the jigsaw. I just need to slot them into the place.'

Wednesday looks at Y/n again. He softly grips his hand onto hers, causing her to look at him.

"Tell me if you don't feel alright." He whispered to her in a soft and comforting voice.

Y/n just smiled and nodded, appreciating his words. "I'm alright. Just still shocked about it," she said in a softer tone.

Wednesday nods and looks at the Mayor's coffin again. "This even made me want to find out more about that monster." He muttered in a more serious tone.

Y/n nods and looks at the coffin. "I know. And you're right, we should find the one who did this. it's not safe for anyone." she said.

Wednesday then turned his head to her. "amor, if you think I'll let you help me find who it is, don't even think about it." he said in a serious and protective tone.

but Y/n only shakes her head and looks at him. "No. I will help you and that's final," she said sharply.

Wednesday is being too determined as he shakes his head. he's being protective as always. "I won't let you. I will handle it."

"Wednesday, Don't even try stopping me. you don't think I can protect myself?" she questioned him.

Wednesday immediately shakes his head. "No, of course not. I just don't want you to get hurt, amor. I learned my lesson on that night." he said.

They both know what he meant by 'that night' and they both didn't like what happened.

but somehow, this wouldn't stop her from it. Y/n shakes her head in determination. "It won't happen again because this time we'll be ready," she said.

Wednesday looks at her for a while, letting out a sigh since he knows he can't get her to stop from doing so.

"I should've known I would be dating a hardheaded girl." He muttered as he sighed and softly tightened his grip on her hand.

Y/n only chuckled and nodded. "Yeah, you should've known." She teased.

Wednesday slightly smiled when he saw the smile on her face. at least now he made her feel better. he's happy with it.

he removed his hand from hers and rested it on her waist instead. rubbing his hand up and down on the side of her waist.

y/n's eyes look in Enid's direction. Ajax has been comforting Enid while wrapping his arm around her shoulder.

'I must look past the tears and marks of grief.'

other people begin to leave.

'Until now, I have been outmatched and outmaneuvered, but the final gambit has yet to be played.'

Tyler glances at Y/n and Wednesday's direction. He also saw the way Wednesday's arm wrapped around her waist. he looks away and turns to leave.

'The killer will make a mistake, and We'll be ready.'

Wednesday saw a figure in his peripheral vision. he turns his head and takes a clearer look into it.

behind a tree, a figure of a man wearing a coat and hat suddenly moves and runs away.

Wednesday shifts his hand from Y/n's waist to her hand. he grabs her hand and pulls her with him as they both run into the woods, following the man.

Y/n was confused at first, but when she saw a clear view of the man's figure, she quickly obliged and ran with Wednesday.

Running towards the mysterious man, not caring about the dirty puddle and dirt splashing on their shoes.

Y/n took her hand off Wednesday's grip turned herself into a bat, and flew towards the mysterious man.

Wednesday was surprised and quite unhappy when she removed her hand from his, but he relaxed when he saw how she turned into a bat and flew towards the man.

his unpleased look turns into a proud smile. "Atta girl." He muttered. he focused on running again, looking more determined to catch the man.

Wednesday saw the way the man hid behind a tree. he ran towards the tree and found nothing behind it.

he stopped on his track as he looked around, feeling a pound of dissatisfaction.

y/n flies above him and then lands next to him. She also looks around while facing her back with Wednesday.

suddenly, they both heard a loud stomp on the grass near them, Wednesday was quick to take action.

he pulls out the arm of the umbrella, resulting in a sharp point on the end of it, and points it to the face of the mysterious man.

the man didn't budge, instead, he put his palms on the sharp metal in front of him, causing an electric shock to Wednesday.

Wednesday flinched and put the metal down. Y/n was quite mad about it, and she walked towards the man, but Wednesday stopped her.

"Still as sharp as ever, my not so little protégé." The mysterious said.

Y/n's brow furrowed in confusion. Her confusion became more when she looked at Wednesday and saw a smile on his face.

"Uncle Fester," Wednesday muttered with a wide smile. Y/n got the idea that he might know the man she turned to look at the man again.

The mysterious man took off his hat, resulting in a bald man with dark undereyes and a smile on his face.

The three of them stroll through the dark woods, Wednesday in the middle and talking to his uncle Fester while holding Y/n hand. "How long have you been stalking me?"

"Just blew into town this morning and was hit by a wave of nostalgia." Uncle Fester said.

"I thought you didn't go to Nevermore." Asked by the confused Wednesday.

"I didn't. Your dad got all the brains. But U used to drop in on him. Usually from the ceiling with a dagger clutched between my teeth. Just to keep him on his toes."

Wednesday looks at Uncle Fester with a small smile. "Of course."

Uncle Fester continues to talk. "He filled me in on what's been going on. Monsters, murder, mayhem. What fun!" he smiles.

Listening and watching their conversation, Y/n realized that he really was Wednesday's family.

"I told him I had a job in Boston, but I'd be checking up on you." Uncle Fester said.

"What kind of job?" Wednesday asked.

"The kind that means I need somewhere to lay low for a couple of days." A smile forms across Wednesday's face after Uncle Fester's words.

Wednesday and Y/n lead Uncle Fester to the Bees Keeper hut.

Wednesday opens the door and lets Y/n get inside first before him and his uncle Fester. "This place belongs to a friend," he said.

Uncle Fester looks around. Wednesday closes the door and puts the umbrella on a table.

"You actually made a friend. That poor kid will be going home in a body bag." Uncle Fester said as he put his bag on a table.

"Well, Not really shocked considering you have yourself a girlfriend now." Fester looks at Y/n and then at Wednesday with a knowing look.

Uncle Fester turns and walks toward a bee's hideout. "Oh."

Both Wednesday and Y/n turn their head to look at each other after what Fester said.

"I like a hideout that comes with snacks." Uncle Fester said after a chuckle.

Wednesday and Y/n turn their head at him. Y/n suddenly became protective and strict to the bees. "Those bees are hibernating," she said.

Uncle Fester opens up the lid and looks at the bees inside. "They're practically Eugene's children," Wednesday said.

"Ooh." Uncle Fester mumbled with a soft chuckle. He picks up one bee and raises it towards his mouth.

"That means do not eat them!" Wednesday said in a higher voice, which made Uncle Fester stop.

Uncle Fester turns to look at him and also sees Y/n's strict cold look. Even Wednesday looks cold and scary.

Fester clicked his tongue and put the bee back inside its hideout. "You know," he closes the lid and turns towards Wednesday. "When you give me that death stare of disapproval, you remind me of your mother."

Wednesday's eyes briefly shift then looks at Fester again. "Speaking of scary things, you know what kind of monster you're dealing with?"

Wednesday removes his grip on Y/n's hand as he pulls out the drawing of the monster and walks toward his uncle. "I haven't been able to identify it."

He unfolds the paper and shows it to his uncle. "Ooh," Fester exclaimed grabbed the paper, and looked through the drawing. "It's called a Hyde," he said in a more serious tone.

Wednesday took the drawing. "As in Jekyll and Hyde?" he asked. Uncle Fester tighten his lips and nod. "You've seen one before?" Y/n asked.

"Oh, yeah. In '83 during my vacation at the Zurich Institute for the Criminally Insane. Where I got my first lobotomy." Fester said.

Then, Uncle Fester somewhat got distracted. "But you know lobotomies. They're like tattoos. Can't just get one."

"Tell me about the Hyde," Wednesday said in a serious tone.

Uncle Fester sighed and looked away as he thought about it. "Ah. Olga Malacova. Jeez. She had it all. Beauty, brains, and penchant for necrophilia." Fester chuckled.

Y/n walks forward to hear it more clearly and seemingly finds herself becoming more and more interested. "Olga was a concert pianist until one night she transformed in the middle of a Chopin sonata." Fester dais.

"Massacred a dozen audience members. And three music critics." Fester finished with a soft smile.

"What triggered her? Or did she just change on her own?" Wednesday asked.

Fester shrugged. "No idea. I only saw her in group electroshock therapy."

Wednesday turns and strolls around while thinking. "There's never been any mention of Hydes in any outcast book." he turns to look at Fester. "And Nevermore is reputed for having the best collection."

Wednesday turns again to think of any clue. "You try Nathaniel Faulkner's diary?" Fester opened up a suggestion.

Wednesday turns to look at his uncle. "Hmm. Before he founded Nevermore, Faulkner traveled the world, cataloging every outcast community." Fester explained.

Wednesday's brows furrowed and turned his body. "How do you know this?" he asked.

"You think your parents can't keep their hands off each other now, you very." Fester shakes his head and continues. "I showed up unannounced one night in Gomez's dorm room. Let's just say I wasn't interrupting a pillow fight." he chuckled.

Y/n's brows furrowed and cringed. Wednesday walks to him. "Uncle Fester," he said firmly.

Fester's smile and chuckle die. "Yeah," he muttered.

"The diary, where is it?" Wednesday asked.

"Nightshades Library. Your dad parked me there and said I should settle in for a long stretch. And that's when I found this nifty little safe. I was hoping for a stash of cash or jewels but instead, I found a diary." Fester finally became serious again.

Wednesday thinks for a while. Then looks at Fester. "We'll sneak into the Nightshades Library tonight. In the meantime, lay low."

Wednesday didn't wait for his uncle's response. He grabs Y/n's hand and gently pulls her with him toward the door after taking the umbrella from the table.

Wednesday paused and turned to look at Fester. "If you are discovered, I will disown you and collect the reward money tied to your capture," he said nonchalantly.

Fester remains unfazed. "I'd expect nothing less," he said.

Wednesday turns and open the door for Y/n, and let her out first before following her and closing the door behind them as Uncle Fester waves his hand.

Once the door was closed, Fester Immediately turned around and opened up the lid of the bee's hideout.

Suddenly, the door opens once again. "Leave the bees alone," Wednesday warned.

Fester quickly closes the lid and turns to face Wednesday with a smile and simpering chuckle.
