BBQ At Banks'

I'm running late, no doubt about it. I woke up a couple hours later than I was planning. Even though I set an alarm, I slept right through it. As I run around like a headless chicken, trying to get ready, I hear something at my window. Letting out a groan, I walk over to it, open it up and shout:

"Fulton, what have I told you about throwing stones at my window?"

"Not to do it."

"And why did I say that?" I quiz him.

"Because I smashed the window last time." He recalls with a hint of shame.

"Exactly."

"Hurry up, we gotta get to Adam's place." He changes topics.

"Yeah, yeah, I'll be there in a minute."

I close the window again and put on my oversized purple flannel. After making sure there's chapstick in my pocket, I quickly grab a couple things and shout a goodbye to my mother and head out to the alley beside my bedroom. As I turn the corner, I'm met with a warm smile. We begin the walk to Adam's house and I quickly turn to Fulton to apologise.

"Sorry I kept you waiting. I woke up late - didn't sleep much."

"You were on the phone with Averman all night, weren't you?" He smirks playfully.

"How could you possibly know that?" I question, making us both laugh.

"You guys never stop talking."

"That's not true."

"Oh, really?" He raises an eyebrow. "I've been at your house when you've been on the phone. I went to hang out with Guy and Ken for a few hours then got food for us and when I came back with it, you were still talking to him."

"It was 1 time." I defend myself.

"Dude, I found you guys sitting on the bathroom floor at 2am talking about god knows what."

"Okay, fine. Can't I talk to my friend about shit in random places at early hours of the morning?" We laugh.

We continue chatting and roasting each other on the walk to the cake-eater part of town. As Fulton knocks on the door, there's only 1 person that I hope doesn't answer it.

"Hi, Mr. Banks." Fulton greets him. Dammit - it just had to be him.

"Hi, thanks for having us." I fake a smile.

"Yeah, whatever. Everyone's out back." He let's us in, not caring at all.

As we walk past him, Fulton and I look at each other and roll our eyes. We don't like Adam's dad. He always acts like an ass and puts way too much pressure on him. Literally at the first game Adam played as a Duck, he still turned up in his Hawk jacket and rooted for them.

We quickly make our way through the house and into the huge backyard. As we walk through the sliding glass door, I see the entire team having a good time - the smell of food cooking on the BBQ fills the air. Before I can go talk to them, Adam's mother greets me.

"Hi, Mrs. Banks."

"Y/N, how are you, hun?" She asks with a sweet smile.

"I'm good, thanks. How are you?"

"Doing just fine. It's a beautiful day, isn't it?"

"Yeah, thanks for having us over."

"Of course, anytime. Go have fun, it's nice to see you."

I really like her. No idea how she ended up with a guy like Adam's dad - I guess opposites attract or something. After walking away from her, Adam runs over to welcome us. I then look around to see what people are doing. Some of them are in the pool already. Pretty quickly, I spot Averman on a lounge chair not far from the pool. He waves and pats the chair next to him, signalling me to join him.

"Saved you a seat." He beams.

"Dude, how did you get here on time?"

"Charlie. How are you so late?"

"Fulton." I chuckle. "And I slept through my alarm."

Averman and I continue talking about the most random things for about 20 more minutes before I mention how Fulton almost smashed my window again. Just as I say his name, I look over to see Fulton staring at us as he quickly walks around the pool.

"How do you two have anything to talk about?" He seems so confused and a little frustrated - jealous of our friendship I'd say.

We just laugh at him in response and he shakes his head. A couple of minutes later, Mrs. Banks calls out that some food is ready. All of us race over to her. Each of us piles food onto our plates. Scattering back to where we were sitting, we chow down like there's no tomorrow.

We spend the rest of the day eating everything, chatting to everyone, messing around in the pool and playing random games. As it starts to get dark, people start leaving. Since we still haven't run out of things to talk about, I take Averman home with me for a spontaneous sleepover - though I'm sure there's not gonna be a lot of sleeping.
