Cinder Twenty

(This chapter is early because I haven't posted in awhile and I wanted to post this chapter!)

I flipped through maybe a dozen historical books before I saw the sky startup turn pink from the sunrise, Kai fell asleep many hours before that and I planned to follow him but never put down the books. I didn't learn a whole bunch about the kind of government I wanted to put into practice on Luna but I read a good amount, most of it was about the World Wars, which I never heard of till tonight. In my opinion it was everyone acting like children to get what they want, but their countries did last for a long time. I made a mental note to ask Kai what he thought of the Wars. Kai was asleep on the couch across from me with a book laid out over his chest, I think he fell asleep around the time that Winter and Jacin went to bed, I'm not exactly sure what time that was.

I let out a sigh and laid my book down on the couch next to me, I gotta go get food or something. I stood up and started to walk to the door. I need that thing they call coffee here. I opened the door and head down the hall to find the kitchen or something. It isn't long until I meet someone who looks like he works here.

"Ma'am, can I help you?" He asks me in a nice tone.

"Could you point me in the direction of the kitchen?" I ask him with a smile.

"Of course, I'll show you the way." He answered.

"Oh no! I'm sure I can find my way if you just give me the general way to get there, I don't wanna burden you," I answer quickly. I may be the queen of Luna but I still hate people going out of their way just for me.

"It's no trouble Ma'am, if you don't know your way around you'll probably get lost." He said and started walking down the hall.

"Thank you very much."

"Guessing this is your first time at the castle?" He asked me, making light conversation.

"Actually no but normally I have my fiancé to show me around. But he's sleeping and didn't want to wake him." I answered kindly.

"Oh well that's very kind of you." He said. "Do you mind if I ask who your fiancé is? Maybe I know him."

I quickly try to decide if I should tell him the truth, I know the odds of him being someone who wants to hurt myself or Kai are very low but still don't think I should tell him. If I've learned anything in the past few years it's that anyone can hurt you, even if you trust him, so I lie. "I doubt you would know him. He doesn't come here often and he's very quiet." I tell him.

"Okay, sorry I don't know how to hold my tongue sometimes." He says.

He knows I'm lying. "It's fine." I say not knowing what else to say.

We walk the rest of the way in silence, I try to memorize the way we come so I can get back to the library myself without getting lost. When we reach the kitchen I thank him again and he nods.

"Are you sure you need help getting back?" He asks again.

"No I'm sure I can get back on my own." I answered with a half smile.

He leaves and I walk into the kitchen, everyone's eyes turn to me. And that was when I realized this castle was a bit different from Luna, no one knew who I was.

"Um hi," I said shyly and raise a hand to them.

"Can we help you?" A girl asks me.

"Um yeah, could I make something for breakfast? You don't have to help but I can do it." I said trying to sound nice.

"Your Majesty, we can make it for you." She answered.

"Oh no I can't make you do that," I answered.

"It's our job Ma'am." She answered.

"Are you sure?" I asked.

"Of course." The chief answered.

"Thank you," I said smiling.

While they cooked I talked to a few of the workers and ended up eating breakfast with them. I was with them around an hour till I said that Kai was probably worried so I left.

I made it about halfway back till I forgot the way back. I think I took wrong turn somewhere, I'm definitely not where I'm meant to be. I reached a door which leads to the street, I found that out from opening it when I did a young lady ran up to me.

"MA'AM!" She called as she ran up to me. She had a small bundle of cloth in her arms as she ran.

"What's wrong?" I said gently and put a hand on her arm.

"Please take my baby." She said with a whimper.

"What?" I ask trying to wrap my mind around what she was asking me.

Her face and clothes were covered in dust and dirt which showed that she was probably homeless or working in bad conditions, her long face was already covered in worry lines, but she looked only a year or so older than me. "My child. I can't help him and you can." She said breathlessly. "You're the Queen aren't you?"

It seemed like I couldn't understand what she was saying, I heard it but I wasn't understanding it.

"Please Ma'am, if the child's father knew I kept the child, he would kill us both." She said shaking.

"Okay, okay," I said quietly as I thought about what she was saying.

"Thank you." She said as she moved the bundle into my hands. "His birthday was 3 days ago. No one can know he was mine."

"Okay," I said again as I turned to look at the bundle in my arms. A baby boy. He was sound asleep, he looked so peaceful.

"Thank you, Your Majesty." She said as she turned away from me and ran back down the alley.

Once she turned away I opened the door and stepped back in. And realized what I had just done. I shut the door and looked at the baby in my arms. He still hadn't moved, he was still sleeping.

"Oh crap," I whispered to myself as I looked at the little newborn baby boy, he also had dust on his face like his mother. I took my free hand and gently wiped the dust off his cheek. "Oh boy, what did I do."

I turned down the hall and started walking. How was I gonna find my way back to the library? And how was I gonna explain to Kai that I just practically got a baby? I could find someone and ask them to take him, but as I looked at him I couldn't help but fall more in love with him. Somehow I ended up in a hallway I remember walking down on my way to the kitchen. I take a left and I'm in the hallway that leads to the library.

I get the library and open the door, Kai is still asleep on the couch. I walk over to the couch I was reading on and move the book, I lay the baby down on the couch. I unwrap the dirty blankets, all he had underneath was a dipper, he was so skinny, smaller than Michelle when she was born. I take one of the blankets from the back of the couch and wrap him up in it gently. I lay him back down and move back over to Kai's couch, I stand on my knees next to him.

I take a deep breath trying to calm myself down. "Kai I need your help," I say quietly.

He moves but doesn't wake up.

"Kai! I really need your help." I say a little louder than before.

He still doesn't wake up.

"Okay, Kai, I need you to wake up," I say even louder.

He still only moves but doesn't wake up.

"KAI!" I say almost yelling.

That wakes him up.

He rubs his eyes and looked at me. "What's wrong?" He asks like he's still sleeping.

"Um I might have accidentally adopted a baby," I say shyly.

"What?" He asks very confused.

I stand up and walk over to the other couch and pick up the baby. When I turn around he is sitting up rubbing his eyes. I walk back over and sit next to him.

"You adopted a baby?" He asks looking down at the baby.

"I think so," I say quietly.

He turns to face me and crosses his legs underneath him. "Only one question." He says.

"Okay?" I ask.

"How?"

I explain the story to him and he just watches me. "I didn't mean to, I just couldn't say no. She said that his father would kill him them if I didn't take him so I didn't have much of a choice."

He smiles and kisses my forehead gently. "I know, I wouldn't expect you to do any different." He says smiling at the baby. "So are you gonna keep him?"

(Sorry this chapter is a little late! I tried to make up for it and make it long.
And I promised this chapter would be happier and in my opinion it was!
