Eren Yeager & Mental Illnesses

So I looked at the nine symptoms of it, and some seem to match up with Eren Yeager, actually. One thing I read says that if you have BPD, you'll feel like you're on an emotional roller coaster because your emotions are unstable. Explosive anger can be a sigh. Eren Yeager is mentally unstable and seems to have unstable emotions, which you can clearly see from the time he was a kid.

One example would be when he'd hit adults over the head with thick sticks. He'd get into fights with the other kids. He gets angry pretty quickly and easily. His moods seem to change kind of a lot.

He's very passionate about his hatred for titans and passionate about his beliefs, and when titans are brought up and such, or when people mention not wanting to join the corps because they want to live, Eren's mood quickly changes and it's just explosive anger.

Okay, so here's this right here.

Extremely sensitive, as in small things triggering intense reactions. Impulsive and reckless behavior. Sound familiar?

Eren: Why are we talking about my mental instability?

It's fun! And this will help me understand you even more.

Eren is sensitive. Remember when Levi left the room to have him take over cleaning to check on his work upstairs? He looked pretty discouraged, that was after he was told he was sleeping in chains, who wouldn't be discouraged by that? But, Petra had come in and told him to not look so discouraged. He seemed upset that he was that readable, and she then started talking about Levi. It gave me the impression he was discouraged about Levi, maybe because the guy shows, like, zero emotion save for anger and annoyance.

Eren definitely can lash out verbally and say hurtful things, and I'd say he can act out in dangerous ways.

As for the ashamed and guilty part of it all, I think it fits him, too. I'd say if it didn't fit when he was young, it fit after his mother was eaten by the Titan.

Okay, here are the nine symptoms of BPD (there are more but they take the nine major things and focus on that first I guess):

1. Fear of abandonment. People with BPD are often terrified of being abandoned or left alone. Even something as innocuous as a loved one arriving home late from work or going away for the weekend may trigger intense fear. This can prompt frantic efforts to keep the other person close. You may beg, cling, start fights, track your loved one's movements, or even physically block the person from leaving. Unfortunately, this behavior tends to have the opposite effect—driving others away.

(Note: Isayama has said that Eren has monophobia, which is a fear of being alone.)

2. Unstable relationships. People with BPD tend to have relationships that are intense and short-lived. You may fall in love quickly, believing that each new person is the one who will make you feel whole, only to be quickly disappointed. Your relationships either seem perfect or horrible, without any middle ground. Your lovers, friends, or family members may feel like they have emotional whiplash as a result of your rapid swings from idealization to devaluation, anger, and hate.

(Note: This one isn't very accurate for Eren, considering he's not shown romantic interest in anyone due to having one goal: to kill all the titans. But from what we can tell, he is very close to Mikasa and Armin, and has been friends with them for a long time, plus he became pretty close to Marco, and he was very hurt by Annie, Reiner, and Bertholdt when they revealed themselves to be the enemy.)

3. Unclear or shifting self-image. When you have BPD, your sense of self is typically unstable. Sometimes you may feel good about yourself, but other times you hate yourself, or even view yourself as evil. You probably don't have a clear idea of who you are or what you want in life. As a result, you may frequently change jobs, friends, lovers, religion, values, goals, or even sexual identity.

(Note: So this may not apply to Eren, but I tend to think that it does. After the events with Historia, Eren seemed to feel nothing but negativity towards himself. Sometimes he seems to see himself in a good light, other times he sees himself in a bad light and feels worthless. SPOILER ALERT:

This could very well be the reason Eren will later betray the Survey Corps.

END OF SPOILER ALERT!)

4. Impulsive, self-destructive behaviors. If you have BPD, you may engage in harmful, sensation-seeking behaviors, especially when you're upset. You may impulsively spend money you can't afford, binge eat, drive recklessly, shoplift, engage in risky sex, or overdo it with drugs or alcohol. These risky behaviors may help you feel better in the moment, but they hurt you and those around you over the long-term.

(Note: I know nothing about his sex life or if he's even interested in that stuff [Uh, thank goodness, yuck!], but self destructive behavior. Reckless behavior. His mother said he was a reckless boy, which he is. They don't call him a suicidal maniac for nothing!)

5. Self-harm. Suicidal behavior and deliberate self-harm is common in people with BPD. Suicidal behavior includes thinking about suicide, making suicidal gestures or threats, or actually carrying out a suicide attempt. Self-harm encompasses all other attempts to hurt yourself without suicidal intent. Common forms of self-harm include cutting and burning.

(Note: Now I don't think this one is like him, but then again, I've not read all the manga and I don't know how it ends. But because of how Eren is, I could see him possibly attempting suicide at some point in his life. But the fact that he has to injure himself to transform— kinda self harm? Or it would just make it even easier for him to attempt one day later in his life.)

6. Extreme emotional swings. Unstable emotions and moods are common with BPD. One moment, you may feel happy, and the next, despondent. Little things that other people brush off can send you into an emotional tailspin. These mood swings are intense, but they tend to pass fairly quickly (unlike the emotional swings of depression or bipolar disorder), usually lasting just a few minutes or hours.

(Note: I'm not positive on this one, I'm still thinking. And I'm not completely certain if Eren has BPD or if he is Bipolar or Scizophrenic after something I read which will be posted after this here! Is it possible to be a combination? That would be SCARY.)

7.  Chronic feelings of emptiness. People with BPD often talk about feeling empty, as if there's a hole or a void inside them. At the extreme, you may feel as if you're "nothing" or "nobody." This feeling is uncomfortable, so you may try to fill the void with things like drugs, food, or sex. But nothing feels truly satisfying.

(Note: This could be true for Eren, since it's confirmed he becomes a pretty heavy drinker. But apparently Eren also has a pretty high alcohol tolerance. And this is something Isayama had said back in 2019, so I'm not sure if he's changed his mind on it or not.)

8. Explosive anger. If you have BPD, you may struggle with intense anger and a short temper. You may also have trouble controlling yourself once the fuse is lit—yelling, throwing things, or becoming completely consumed by rage. It's important to note that this anger isn't always directed outwards. You may spend a lot of time feeling angry at yourself.

(Note: For those who know Eren... I don't think I need to actually put a note for this. 😂😂)

9. Feeling suspicious or out of touch with reality. People with BPD often struggle with paranoia or suspicious thoughts about others' motives. When under stress, you may even lose touch with reality—an experience known as dissociation. You may feel foggy, spaced out, or as if you're outside your own body.

(Note: I can't remember anything for this, so I don't know if Eren ever has experienced this.)

Now that I've addressed that, I'm going to post something from someone's blog in screenshots because they made some very good points. Because of it, I'm not sure if Eren has BPD, or is Bipolar, or is Schizophrenic. But we all know one thing: there is something seriously messed up with this kid.

I mean, he killed two adult men at nine years old for Mikasa, a girl that he, at the time, barely even knew!

And let's not forget when Hannes died. He laughed and cried at the same time. O.O

So, as you can see, there is definitely something seriously and mentally wrong with Eren. Murderer at nine years old, and he's just crazy and creepy at times! That face when he says he wants to kill all the titans. Do you remember that face? Well I'mma show you that face.

"I wanna become a member of the Scouts, so I can slaughter every Titan that crosses my path."

That voice. Such hatred. CREEPY! Anyways yeah. Clearly he has mental issues that should have been taken care of. But I guess there's no time for that in this world.

So anyways, I was very angry at Eren for what he's going to do in season four, but... I'm not mad anymore. I'm just very hurt, and I'm sad for Eren, because this guy has serious mental and emotional issues because of everything that has happened, and because of the mental issues he had even as a nine year old that were never addressed.

Which makes me question something else. Grisha Yeager was a doctor. Maybe only a medical one, but surely he noticed this. So was Eren supposed to be like this because of some great plan involving him being a Titan shifter?

Whatever the case, Eren Yeager makes me very sad and he clearly needs help.

Considering he sees hallucinations and is delusional inside of the Titan, maybe he truly is schizophrenic? I don't know. He seems to show many signs of all three of those. He's just one messed up kid.

Eren: Wow. Thanks.

Jean: *calmly* Always knew something was wrong with that Titan Boy.

Eren: *shouting* No one was asking you, Horse Face!

I rest my case!
