A Poet's Lament

Zelda's toes curled inside of her supple boots, desperate to feel the soggy green grass of Rito village. The sun was shining, a rainbow curving over the infinite horizon. It had only freshly rained moments prior.

Reno was left to graze beside Epona on a ridge. Link insisted she teleport herself as he paraglided over to the tall pole of rock jutting out of the water. And here he was, beside her on Revali's Landing admiring the alluring landscape.

He felt the warmth in his chest as she glimpsed at Zelda swiftly before squinting his eyes to gaze at the golden sunrise that tinted the clouds. His eyes traced over each color of the rainbow, and chased the hooves of the small herd racing beside one another, causing the pine trees to sway ever so gently. The scenery, the moment was perfect, and yet he knew the girl beside him made no contest of the landscape. She would forever be the most beautiful image he would ever know or imagine.

The breeze calmly played with her hair, and she smiled at the world before her and took it in all in a single breath. He could have been born as any other person, yet he was lucky enough to sit beside the Queen of Hyrule, their legs hanging from the platform. Maybe she would finally accept she was a Queen?

"...We could live a thousand lifetimes and never see a view such as this one, and Link I am grateful this is such a rare sight to see..." A breathy whisper escaped her lips.

Her knight held his left leg, resting his chin on it, as his right one swayed back and forth. What a day it had been:

"No Elder, for I have yet to perish under the weight of darkness." Zelda turned her head to Revali's Landing with a melancholy, hollow gaze before turning her eyes back on the Rito Elder.

"You need only call me Kaneli, dear Queen."

Her eyes darted to the kneeling knight beside her. Zelda could see the grin on his face he was trying to suppress by biting his cheeks.

It felt odd to Link, he was only older than her by three months, yet his heart seemed to glow with pride for Zelda. He had witnessed the maturity in her personality up to this point.

"In what ways can the Rito Village help you?" Kaneli raised his wing-arms, "As you can see...we have wood to spare for furnishings."

Zelda inhaled the sharp fragrance of pine, "...You all would do that for us? I was merely asking for your blessing to rebuild, but I cannot thank you enough."

"After you cleanse the cobwebs of the castle, send a messenger out to us and we will transport supplies to the castle. I am elated to assist in any way I can."

She dipped her head, "Your support is inspiring in these trying times, but I have no doubt that the restoration of Hyrule will be the likes of which has never been seen before."

She turned on her heel to leave.

"-Oh, and a Goron journeyed all the way here from Death Mountain to speak with you on behalf of his city. I am certain you will run into him on the lower levels of our village."

But, the Goron came jogging to them. Not too long after they exited the Elder's chamber.

Zelda slightly jolted back at the sight of him. It had been a long time since she had seen another Goron besides Daruk...and that was one hundred years ago.

The round, orange, creature gave a quick bow with his stubby arms, before rambling.

"The Princess! The knight! I am truly graced by the presence of you both! I have a critical piece of information that I would like to present the Hylian Royal Family...erm...Princess Zelda."

Her face softened, "Please do tell us."

"News that you and your appointed knight travels fast! It even reached Goron City, so when we found out that you were making your way to each of the four territories, we didn't want you or Link to suffer through the heat and trouble of getting to Goron City, so our elder sent me out to Rito Village to wait for you here, and you have come! The Gorons would like to offer you unconditional support and materials to help the restoration of Hyrule..here, I have this document as proof."

She daintily grabbed the document with both of her gloved hands, it had been creased it odd places, as if it had been crumpled and straightened again and again. The writing was messy and big, but the message remained the same.

"May I have your name?" Zelda asked with a wane and tired smile.

The Goron's mouth was agape, "It's...uh...Darbus!!"

"Link and I will remember your name. You have done us well to save us the trouble," She giggled, "I don't think I would have endured the heat!"

Oh, what a day it was! And it was ending now, as the sky glazed with a burning orange that casted a partial silhouette on Zelda. Link remembered the songs that played and the children that never became silent, but it was now. He sought Teba, yet it was soon clear that him and his family had left for the flight range. The wholesomeness of a family swelled in his heart, as he desperately wished he could remember his own, yet he felt Zelda beside him, and he was content with this family.

Link swung his head around at the sound of talons scraping against the wood, as Zelda followed suit.

"Kass, it's been awhile since we last saw one another..."

"Well, I heard that there was a small chance I could see the Princess for myself, and maybe even speak with her."

Zelda stood and turned to face Kass, "You...My old court poet was a Rito...but he primarily played the fiddle as opposed to that accordion you have but he played that as well.."

"Actually, he was my teacher, Princess."

"I'm sorry...he was an amazing poet. He played me every song he knew and wrote more. I listened to all of them, humming the lyrics as I wrote in my diary in the darkest hours of the night. If only Link could remember as I do."

Kass's posture straightened, "He played them all, except for one."

"And which one was that?" She whispered to him, the gleam of sunset at her back.

"It was his final song-as it is mine. It is about a Princess who he loved, and the pain that came with it when she faced Ganon alone..."

"He escaped the attack on Hyrule castle? How could that be?..."

"He never wanted to tell me, but his jealousy waned when he heard that her knight defended her until his 'final' breath."

Zelda's eyes seemed to mist over, "...Will you play it for me, Kass?"

Link looked up at her. Kass was doing no favors in mending her broken heart...did she love that old court poet in return?

"It would be an honor to do so..." And with a stretch of his accordion he played a song of which neither Zelda nor Link had ever heard. And it was about them...

When it was over, the two Hylians clapped to a bowing Kass as the sky turned lavender.

"When all is rebuilt, my friend, I will come for you. And you can live the life of your teacher. Will you be our court poet?"

Kass smiled, "It would be an honor, yet I have come back here to stay with my family forevermore, and I can not leave them another waking hour longer."

Zelda grinned, "They can join you! We need a lively kingdom!"

"Then, I can't refuse! Thank you, Princess Zelda! I will tell them immediately." He dipped his head and hopped off down the wooden stairs into the young night.

A corner of Link's mouth turned upward into a half-smile, "Speaking of kingdom, Zelda?..."

His eyes of blue gazed into the green of hers for a moment. Her hand felt like a feather when she grasped his.

"...Let's go home, Link..."
