Chapt. 38

Neveah sits on a log in the clearing as the others train. She, unfortunately, won't be in the fight because Jasper was right. With her being a newborn and vulnerable, she'd be an easy target... especially with Riley being there, being the one to have turned her.

Emmett is sent flying through the air and he lands on his back right at Neveah's feet.

"Hey, spider monkey," he greets before he springs back up to face Jasper, the one who threw him. "Again."

Edward's Volvo stops and Neveah suddenly stiffens when she smells human blood. She hasn't hunted today.

Come. The two wolves come up and they growl as the shifters begin to arrive. Behave.

Edward stops halfway across the clearing. "They're here."

Eight wolves soon emerge from the tree line behind Neveah, she sends her wolves away as Sam stops right behind her, Paul and Jared with him. Quill stays near Seth and Leah. Embry is by himself but still close to the pack.

"They don't trust us enough to be in their human forms," Edward says as he reads their minds.

"They came," Carlisle speaks. "That's what matters."

"Hi, Sam," Neveah greets as she wolf judges her.

"He says hello," Edward claims.

"Will you translate?" Carlisle asks the mind-reader, who nods.

Carlisle turns towards the wolves Sam steps forward, he stops right beside the log Neveah is sat on. Paul and Jared are at her back.

"Jasper has expiwrnwce with newborns," Carlisle states. "He'll teach us how to defeat them."

"They want to know how newborns differ from us," Edward says, translating thoughts to words.

"They're a great deal stronger than us, because their own human blood lingers in their veins," Carlisle says and Neveah smirks back at Paul, the wolf even looks smug. "Our kind is never more physically powerful than in our first several months of this life."

The pack huff and grunt as they take this in.

"Neveah, Paul wants to challenge you; newborn to wolf," Edward says.

Neveah looks at Paul's wolf with a competitive smirk. "Oh, wolfie boy, you're on."

The wolf grunts and he nudges her. Sam growls and Paul straights up and acts right.

"You're a buzzkil, Sam," Neveah huffs but then she smells Bella and the tenses. "I haven't hunted today," she whispers.

Seth walks up and rests his wolf head on her lap and Neveah shoots Sam a glare before he can stop him. Sam huffs.

Jasper grows uncomfortable but not with Bella's.... scent, but by the attention and the wolves.

"Carlisle's right," Jasper says, stepping forward anyway. "That's why they were created. A newborn Arkham doesn't need thousands like a human army, but no human army could stand against them. The two most important things to remember are first... never let them get their arms around you. They'll crush you instantly. And second.... never go for the obvious kill. They'll be expecting that and you will lose."

The wolves growl at this as Seth remains by Neveah's side, keeping her arms. Neveah lets his snout as she watches the vampires and her mate. Leah watches her brother and she mentally smiles.

"Emmett?" Jasper looks at the bigger vampire as Conner stays back. "Don't hold back."

Emmett smirks as they stop in the middle fot he cellaring. "Not in my nature."

Emmett charges are Jasper with his vampire speed but Jasper is like a blur. Emmett lunges several times, his arms only grabbing air.

"Monkey man, aren't you supposed to be the strong one!?" Neveah calls with a smirk.

Jasper stops as Emmett turns to Neveah. 9never lose your focus and one more thing... don't turn your back on your enemy."

Emmett lunges up once more until he suddenly stops. Jasper blurs up behind him and he has his teeth inches to Emmett's throat.

"Mmm, there's my major," Neveah purrs.

The wolves all let out impressed grunts. Jasper pars with each member of his family, she Neveah. Neveah is almost a natural when it comes to this but Jasper doesn't trust that the newborns won't make dinner our of her or use her, she'd be too easy of a target, even as a vampire.

"Focus on speed," Jasper speaks as Neveah takes her spot with the wolves once more, "angioityk keep your opponent off guard."

The wolves are getting ancy, inching to get into the mess, but Sam is holding them back.

"Use their momentum against them..."

Neveah stands and she is suddenly in front of Rosalie. "Want to par?"

Rose suddenly agrees and the two go at it.
.........

"Jasper," Bella stops him as Neveah leaves with Carlisle, Esme, Rosalie, and Emmett. "Are you sure there's nothing I can do to help?"

"Your presence alone, your scent will distract the newborns," Jasper informs her, his mind wandering to Neveah and how little control she has now. "Their hunting instinct will take over, drive the, crazy."

"Good. I'm glad," Bella states, she is also worried that her sister will slip one day. "How do you know so much about this?"

"I didn't have quite the same upbringing as my adopted siblings," Jasper replies and he goes to walk away.

Bella slides off the hood of the Jeep and Jasper stops.  He noticed her questioning look. The empath realist there is no walking away now and he pulls up his sleeve. There are vampire bite scars all over his arms, hundreds of them.

"Those bite marks are like mine," Bella says, referring to the one on her wrist. "And Neveah's."

"Battle scars," Jasper informs her. "All the training the confederate army gave me... was useless against the newborns. Still, I never lost a fight."

"This happens during the civil war?" Bella asks.

Jasper nods and he walks, Bella is quick to follow. "I was the youngest major in the Texas cavalry. All without seeing any real battle."

"Until..."

"Until I met a certain immortal," Jasper replies. "Maria." He goes o to explain Maria and what had happened.

"Maria was creating an army?" Bella asks, shocked as she sits on a fallen log.

"They were very common in the south," Jasper explains. "And cost a brutal battles for territory." Jasper reminisces as Alice and Conner appear. "I thought what Maria and I had was love. But I was her puppet. She pulled the strings. I didn't know there was another way u til I found Alice and Conner. And I didn't know what love really was until I met Neveah. Alice had seen  me, and Neveah, coming."

"And you guys kept us waiting long enough," Alice coos.

"My apologies," Jasper says. "I don't know what I'd have become without them."

Conner slaps a hand against Jasper's shoulder.

"I'm going to go to my Neveah," Jasper murmurs. "Too many memories in one setting. It was a pleasure talking to you, Bella."

And within only a milisecond, Jasper is gone.
