Chapter 42

Now tucked up in the passenger-side seat beside Sebastian, I stared out the window in silence as I reflected on what had just taken place.

The second Sebastian had got to me in the parking lot, he had tried to angrily drill me with questions about where Jordan had gone and why he had left me there. I'd brushed off all his questions, and just quietly asked him to take me home, too upset to explain to him the details.

It was because at the end of the day, he had been one hundred percent right about Jordan, and the last thing I wanted to hear was him throwing me a whole heap of I 'told you so's.

Luckily for me, after seeing the panic on my face, Sebastian had seemed to drop his angry question demeanour and was now just quietly driving me home. It didn't take a genius though to figure out he was still angry and filled with questions from the tense way he was gripping the steering wheel and how he kept glancing over at me every five seconds.

Finally, Sebastian pulled up to my house and came to a silent stop on my driveway. Once we were parked, none of us made any move to leave and just sat there in continued silence.

Unable to reign in my own curiosity, I glanced his way, a question playing on my mind.

"How did you know I was there?" I asked, softly breaking the silence.

He remained silent for a bit as though debating whether to answer before he gently rolled his eyes. "I followed you, okay," he snapped, a muscle in his jaw jumping. "And before you start, I had to. I don't trust that bastard for a second, not with you. And I don't care if that makes me some kind of pyscho but-"

"Thank you," I interrupted him, genuinely meaning it.

Looking over at me, Sebastian looked my way and stared at me for quite some time. "Never thought you'd be thanking me for stalking you," he finally mumbled, his lips twitching. "But no problem."

The car then drifted into a few more seconds of silence before I finally let out a heavy sigh. "You know, you were right," I mumbled, still staring forward. "He..erm, stopped at that stupid car park and tried to kiss me-"

"Yeah, I saw that," Sebastian snapped bitterly. He let out a breath, a frustrated one. "But sorry continue."

"Well, he erm...didn't seem to take my rejection very way and basically implied that I was teasing him, and how it didn't make sense how I was acting because apparently, I'm a slut for you," I spat out in a bitter laugh. "And basically long, story short when he gave me an ultimatum to get out of his car or fuck him, the decision wasn't exactly hard to make."

The second I was done, Sebastian's brows pulled together so hard, I'm surprised he didn't sprain himself. "How the fuck did you tease him? By making fucking eye contact and smiling?" he spat sarcastically. "What a pathetic piece of shit."

Turning to look at me properly, Sebastian's eyes softened in concern. "I'm so sorry, that happened. It's my fault, I never should have let you leave with him in the first place," he mumbled.

For the first time in half an hour, I found my mouth twitching up into an amused smile. "How is it your fault? It's not like you have control over my body and can stop me?" I laughed.

"Yeah, well I could have had some sense to at least pretend to pass out or something, so you'd be forced to look after me and not leave," he commented, looking back at me with a smile of his own.

I plucked up a brow. "Would you seriously have done that?" I asked with a smile.

"Without hesitation, if I had known he'd do something like this," Sebastian scoffed with a shameless shrug.

As an image of Sebastian dramatically pretending to faint just to get me out of something flashed through my mind, I started to laugh, unable to help myself.

"What? You know it would work," Sebastian said, starting to laugh along with me. As I laughed along with him a wide smile on my face, any memory of what Jordan had said to me, drifted away from me like a long-forgotten bad dream.

As my laughter sobered up, I just looked at him with a soft smile on my face as I realized how much he'd accidentally cheered me up. It was only at that moment did I fully process how much I'd missed him over the years.

Sebastian stared right back at me, with an equally gentle smile and a strange look to his eyes. It was the kind of look he'd been giving me more and more lately.

I'm not sure what possessed me to do it but at that moment I edged closer to him like I was stuck in a trance. I watched as Sebastian swallowed hard before letting his eyes fall down to my lips.

It was then that we heard the aggressive sound of knocks suddenly beating against Sebastian's window side. Jumping, both of us turned to the sound and saw the angry face of my dad glaring at us through Sebastian's window.

With widened eyes, I quickly slid back to my original position with the awkward clear of my throat before reaching for the door. "Anyway, on that note, I'll guess I'll be going. Thanks again, Sebastian," I muttered with a nervous laugh as I quickly climbed out the door.

Looking a little caught off guard by my dad, Sebastian shifted nervously in his seat before pulling himself together enough to flash me a smile. "Yeah, no problem, See you Brooks," Sebastian said softly as I finally climbed out the door.

The second I left the car, my dad stormed off into the house ahead of me, muttering something about how 'he had to have the eyes of a fucking hawk these days.' But I could barely process a word he said, too focused on the feeling back with Sebastian in the car. I wasn't going to kiss him back then, surely.

No, I was just adjusting myself after getting lost in the moment. That was it – that had to be it. I didn't, nor would I ever like Sebastian Diaz. It was impossible.

--------------------------

Tucked up in my warm armchair by my desk, I scribbled down a couple more lines of my history essay. It was a late Sunday morning, and I decided to spend the morning trying to get ahead on next week's work.

Just as I was contemplating taking a break, there was a knock on my door. "Come in," I called out, as I stretched my arms behind my neck.

My brother Max immediately walked into the room. "Hey, Phoebs," he smiled before taking a seat on the edge of my bed. He looked dressed to go out with his smart blue jeans, and loose shirt.

Max cleared his throat. "So...erm before I ask this, I just want you to promise me you won't blow up on me, cuss me out, or try to physically assault me?" he asked slowly.

My eyes narrowed, sensing a dangerous question approaching. "Well, that depends on what it is," I said simply. I wasn't stupid enough to just automatically promise away what could be a deserved reaction.

"Okay, fine, I'll just tell you," Max said as he nervously rubbed the back of his neck. "Well, you see I'm going over to Lara's today to spend the day with her family and well her mum has apparently been asking about you, so I kind of invited you along as well. So you know, you might have to spend the day with Sebastian," he rushed out.

The second the words left his mouth, Max braced himself as though he was waiting for an explosion to strike the earth.

"Yeah, that's fine," I shrugged, struggling to understand what the big deal was.

Max's eyes instantly narrowed as he looked me up and down with the utmost confusion. "That's seriously all you're going to say? No cursing? No moaning? No threats of physical violence? You're cool with this," he repeated simply and slowly like he was searching for some kind of catch.

"Yeah, it's not a big deal, I'll come," I said as my lips curved up slightly in amusement over his reaction.

Max pinched the bridge of his nose. "Okay, I just want to make sure we're on the same page. You know I'm talking about you hanging out with Sebastian Diaz right, you know the boy you repeatedly told me you thought was the devil reincarnated," he repeated once more.

I rolled my eyes. "Yes, I'm familiar with the guy, only known him practically my whole life or something," I muttered drily with a loose smile.

"Well...erm....huh, I wasn't expecting that...," Max said looking genuinely dumbfounded. "But erm..I'll guess I'll see you in the car in twenty minutes to go over there then," he mumbled, still seeming very unsure of himself.

"Okay," I replied back with a smile.

As Max walked to the door, he kept shooting looks back at me, like he was trying to double-check if it was really me.

Once Max had finally left through the door, I rolled my eyes and got up, and made my way over to my wardrobe for something to wear.

I wasn't stupid; I knew why Max had such an extreme reaction of surprise at how okay I was with hanging out with Sebastian. But truthfully, as insane as it sounded, hanging out with Sebastian no longer seemed like the worst thing in the world. In full honesty, most times I was with him I tended to have fun.

So, as I got the rest of my stuff together for my day out, I couldn't shake the smile on my face as I thought about what might come of today.
