Ch 19 - Truth

Damn, I looked good.

I'd run away with me.

I straightened my jacket out, trying to look as professional as possible. Well, at least, as professional as I could without wanting to set something on fire. I didn't want to fit in with all those royal types. Their style was too stuffy for my liking.

I put in my earrings. Much better.

Honestly, I couldn't afford to mess up this gig. It was just a party for Jimin, but there were a lot of fat cats out there. They might need a pianist. And I couldn't turn down a job.

Not even if I wanted to.

Speaking of which, I had to think about the girl.

This was her first formal gig. She was probably nervous, hoping not to screw anything up.

It could leave me with some opportunities.

I left my room to join the festivities. On my way through the hallways, I crossed paths with Nara and Y/N. I had to admit, Y/N didn't look like a royal when we first met, but she looked the part now. Her ballgown really brought out her smooth skin tone and bright eyes.

If I wasn't planning to get rid of her, she probably would become a decent princess.

"Yoongi?" Y/N asked, sounding surprised.

"Good evening, ladies."

I would have bowed, but it was too bothersome.

"Thanks again for playing for us tonight, Yoongi." Nara said. "You play so wonderfully!"

Just keep throwing cash at me, and I'll do whatever you want.

"It's my pleasure, as always." I said, nodding. "Your escorts are probably waiting for you. I'll see you in a few minutes."

Y/N paused to look me over. She was really drinking it in. I couldn't help myself from teasing her a bit for it.

As Nara walked away, I grabbed Y/N by the arm and pulled her close to me, leaning my lips to her ear. Her sweet perfume overtook my senses. I stepped closer.

"If you get tired of Jungkook," I whispered, "come find me."

She stood, stunned, for a minute. I tried not to laugh as I walked away.

She'd be thinking about me, for sure.

This birthday party was going to be fun to watch.

I went to the gardens, taking my place at the piano. Some people clapped - that empty, polite clap that said, Who's this guy?

They'd remember me when it was over.

I could hear them behind me, cheering and laughing as I played. It was a good feeling, knowing you were making someone happy. To see them smile when I looked over my shoulder was better than gold.

Not that I was knocking gold or anything.

It took awhile for Y/N to take to the floor. With Jimin, nonetheless. She seemed awkward and unsteady. I didn't like the look on his face. Wasn't he engaged or something? Was he trying to get the market on every princess?

I couldn't let Y/N get wrapped up in him. Having him on her side would be dangerous for me.

Next was Namjoon. I didn't think the two of them got along, but they danced well together. They were equally awkward, which made their dancing adorable. Hoseok would have had a stroke if he was here to watch it, though.

Last, Jungkook. I turned to look over my shoulder briefly, just to see him grab her and yank her close to him.

My fingers slipped and hit the wrong keys. Damn.

I focused back on my playing, trying not to look over my shoulder again. It was like having an intense itch. What was Jungkook doing? Why was he holding her like that? That wasn't like him. And she was just an innocent little thing.

I didn't like it. I didn't like Jungkook holding her like that.

I heard a yelp. I couldn't help but look over my shoulder this time, seeing Jungkook laying on the ground while Y/N walked away.

Well, maybe she wasn't as innocent as I thought.

Laughing, I continued to play. This was going to be a good night.

The worst thing about a party ending was the clean up.

I started to help the musicians tear down the electronic equipment, ready to crawl into bed for the next three days. I hadn't seen Y/N since she knocked Jungkook in the jewels, but I assumed she was fine. I didn't have the time or energy to go look for her. If she could kick a prince, she could take care of herself for a night.

Although, if she could kick a prince, she might cause me more trouble than I anticipated.

"Yoongi!" a voice said behind me. "It's Yoongi, right?"

The man smiled as if he had known me for years, offering me a handshake full of gold and diamond rings.

I smiled back and took his beautiful hand. "It is."

"I enjoyed your playing tonight," the man said. "Hoseok told me a lot about you."

I chuckled. "I'm sure most of it was complaining."

"Quite the contrary," the man replied, shaking his head. "Hoseok has nothing but praise for your skills and abilities. He called me the other day to tell me about some of your accomplishments. He recommended that I hire you for an event I'm holding in a few weeks. After tonight's performance, I say that he made an excellent recommendation."

Wait... Hoseok did that for me?

I tried to hide my surprise. "Sounds fantastic. Let me get you my business card."

We exchanged cards. The man's name was Sejin. He was the CEO of a popular banking branch that I used. I wondered if he could jump in his computer and see my embarrassing account.

"How long have you been working with Hoseok?" he asked me.

"About three years," I replied.

"He said that he heard you playing in a mall? Said he hired you on the spot."

I nodded, remembering. That was the day after I was released from jail. I was wandering around the city, trying to find some shred of hope. There was a piano in the mall in the center of the city. I sat down to play, and when I finished, Hoseok was over my shoulder.

He hired me on the spot. He didn't care about my records. He didn't care that I had just gotten out of jail. He had a dark past of his own, so he understood. He gave me a second chance.

I frowned.

He gave me a second chance. But what was I doing with it?
