1 - Rift

A young stag bolts for the rift. It's throbbing, pulsing, a giant, black, starry hole rippling in the rich forest greenery. Every fibre of his being is clamouring for him to stop, to turn back from this unnatural apparition, but he knows without knowing that his time has come. Earth is calling him, as it does all spirit animals at some time. It is time for him to seek his purpose.

A large fish streaks up the river, drawn too by the rift. Its magnetic attraction pulls her upstream, so she has to fight the current, but it draws her like a fly above the water's surface. A large shadow passes over the stream. The rift is near, the attraction becomes stronger. Her consciousness, her common sense, forbid her from swimming closer, but she swims closer anyway. She must go, answer the call of the wild.

They both leap through the rift at the same moment, and scales brush fur, tail brushes leg. In the human world, on the other side of the spacial rend, two children tumble into a clearing. One is a deer-child, a centaur, and the other is a little girl covered in scales.
