|Chp. 22: Salmon Seasons|

An empty box was set in front of me while I was admiring my new black hare fur gloves. "We're out of food." Quinn said looking at me and I glanced up. "Ok." I told him looking at the improving camp.

The horses now had a big piece of wood over their head and some wood being set up around them. Then they'd be no longer tied up. "We're going hunting." Quinn proclaimed and my eyes shifted to my bow sitting next to me along with my quiver of arrows and then back to Quinn.

"When?" I asked Quinn. "Now, we're going to need to skin and dress the animals." Quinn said brushing his hair from his face. I shoved the gloves in the pocket. "Ok, just you and I." I said standing up and taking my bow before walking away and Quinn caught up to me.

"Actually. . ." Quinn trailed off as Lupa trotted at my side as we prepared to head off to go get us some good food for here. "What? I asked narrowing my eyes at Quinn not sure what he was getting onto at the moment.

"Well you see." Quinn pushing some of his hair from his face and nervously smiling under my gaze and I knew he was hiding something. "What did you do?" I asked and Quinn rolled his eyes at me. "Nothing. . . much of course just something small." Quinn spoke with a small smile.

"So when are we going?"

I stopped and turned around to see Erick standing there with Theo at his side. He had a bag with him and some things to bring prey back. "You did not." I told Quinn who nodded. "He's not that bad." Quinn responded as Erick smiled at me.

"See he's nice." Quinn said with a smile on his face. I looked back at Erick who walked over. "I'm ready whenever you are." Erick responded and I crossed my arms across my chest. "We're ready. The horses are still recovering so we will go foot." Quinn said and I nodded.

"So we are we going?" Erick asked. "We're going to explore these woods and learn them and find some good food." Quinn said and I nodded. Erick nodded. "With how far north we went there should be some nice things here." Erick said and Quinn nodded in agreement with Erick.

I simply listened to them deciding to be as much as a witch I had originally planned to be. Once they had all their weapons off we were into the wilderness to go hunt down some prey animals. This left four bears back at the campsite with the horses there as well.

Hiro was working on all the structures and Ruby was following Raegan around watching him work on their tent with interest. Of course there was no food to eat so now we had to go out to hunt. Turning around I followed after Eden, Erick, Quinn, and Theo with Lupa following me.

~~~
We were searching for prey animals here. So far one hare had been caught with Lupa chasing it into a hole and then snapping it's neck. Now it hung off of Theo who was helping care the game back we had hunted. Lupa her nose to the ground as she sniffed out prey.
She kept her nose the ground taking in all those scents while I played with the string of my bow. "So you are good with that?" Erick asked and I glanced up at him. "Yeah." I responded feeling the quiver moving on my back full of arrows.
Arrows that would be finding it's way into prey animals that would make their way over a fire and deep into our bellies. "I never picked that up. My mother taught me spear work. If close enough I can kill prey with a spear." Erick said with a smile.
Quinn nodded. "Most bears are taught that." Quinn responded and Erick nodded. "Of course her bear also taught Theo how to hunt and fish." Erick responded and I stopped listening after a point as we continued through the forest when Lupa's nose snapped on meaning she was onto the trail of something.
"What is it?" I asked Lupa. 'A moose. A lone moose away from a herd meaning that it is ripe for the picketing.' Lupa said licking her chops before off she was. "She is onto a moose." I told Quinn before following after her as she began to stalk beyond a clearing and I ducked to see the massive moose.
It was a large bull with huge antlers in a clearing all by itself ripping up the grass it could fine. That. . . beast could feed all of us for awhile. Lupa licked her chops as I took an arrow out of the quiver as Quinn watched from afar.
He let us take control as the moose would sense the bears but had yet to sense Lupa. Lupa and I were leading this hunt right now while Erick and Quinn watched us girls get to work on capturing this moose bull we'd have.
Quinn would skin the animal, take the meat from it, hang the pelt to dry and use those massive antlers for something for sure. Maybe some more weapons to replace the old ones. More arrows to be made from the antlers and tools no doubt about that at all.
Lupa licked her lips as I nocked an arrow and stretched the string back to my cheek and let the feathers graze my cheek. Lupa got into her striking position ready to lunge at the moose and I breathed in and aimed the tip of the arrow at the moose.
Then I let the string loose and the arrow sliced through the air and Lupa leaped out and the moose looked up just as the arrow buried into it's side. The moose cried out as Lupa lunged at it's side and tore flesh from it's side and refused to let go as I nocked another arrow.
Another arrow flied into the moose's side as Lupa lunged at it's throat and claimed it between her teeth tearing it straight out warm blood seeping into her mouth as the moose fell down and Lupa let go as Quinn came over and looked at the huge moose.
"That will feed us for awhile. That moose is huge and is a male so that's a lot of meat on it. We won't need to hunt more because of that moose. Moose provide lots of food for us. " Quinn said with a smile on his face looking at the now dead moose.
"If there is one moose indigenous to this area there must be a lot meaning moose is about to become a big part in our diet. I wonder if we're need the base?" Erick thought a loud and Quinn looked at Erick who offered a small.
"What prey do you have at this base?" Quinn asked. "We have moose for one, the base if far up north, we might be near it. Hiro knows the way most of the time. He has these paths that always get us back to the base." Erick said and Quinn nodded with interest in his eyes.
"So you have a nice base established?" Quinn asked. "Yeah it's a big wooden and stone structure. It's really nice, we don't have tents there as we really spent lots of time on it. I think you guys would like it there, I can tell you what it looks like if you want." Erick said.
Quinn nodded. "Well there's like a mess hall. It's where everyone just goes there and we eat there. We do big hunts there to feed everyone and some of the bears raise animals to kill for us, like chickens, there is a small chicken coop." Erick said.
"Chicken?" I asked confused. "Small feathered birds, they're good. And we have all sorts of chickens, some meat chickens, egg chickens, and then meat and egg chickens. We've been developing if you can't tell." Erick told us with a smile as we dragged the moose to Eden and Theo to dual carry that together.
Better than having them both exhausted. This was a fat moose so we'd defiantly be getting a sort of system to pick these moose up. After we got the moose we headed out once more Quinn determined to get something once more for us.
"We have training grounds." Erick told. "Really?" Quinn asked turning towards Erick who nodded. "What are your training grounds like?" Quinn asked interest in his voice. "It's big and we are working on getting some cushioning for it. We have a broad range of weapons as well," Erick started with a smile as I started to listen now interested.
"Most of us are experienced with spear work and sword work. Not archery. It's not really a bear thing. Hiro actually knows a bit of hand-to-hand combat as well that he's been teaching. But we mostly work with rapiers, katana, and longswords or anything that is a sword or spear."
Quinn nodded. "Sounds nice, Silver here is good at archery. Ever since I met her she was always shooting this bow of hers. She's quite nifty with the bow and arrow." Quinn said as Erick looked around and I heard running water which make Erick grin.
"There is a river nearby." Erick said. "A pond or stream to collect water from?" Quinn asked. "No an actual river. Come on." Erick said and we sped up the pace following the noise of this running river before we broke through a clearing where a big river ran.
Rocks littered throughout it and small fishes jumped out. The river wasn't all that bad, not a huge current nor that deep. You could see the bottom and Erick's eyes lit up upon seeing some grey fish with bits of red leap out of the water before diving back into the water.
Erick looked so happy to see this one fish leaping out of the water like it could fly. Then it dived back in and swam amongst it's friends. The river was pretty. I watched as they unhooked the moose and Erick stared out as Quinn came over to us.
"I almost forgot it was salmon season." Erick said looking at the fish leaping out. "Salmon?" I asked. "It's a fish. Grizzlies love salmon, well all fish." Quinn said. "I'm half Kodiak." Erick responded looking at the fish. "Bears love salmon in general." Quinn said as Theo went up to the river.
Then he snatched a salmon right out of the river and tossed it at Erick who grinned. Off came that bag he brought with. And then he shoved the fish in. "Fishing, we can catch a bunch of fish to eat and bring back. They're useful in big bulk." Erick said.
Lupa watched as Theo threw a fish as Eden went to go help. Lupa stalked towards the salmon and then it hit her in the face while thrashing around. Lupa jumped back and growled at the fish before stalking around it then seized the fish and snapped it's neck and shook it some then let it fall from her mouth.
To make sure the beast was dead. Lupa looked back at the two bears before deciding that it might be nice to go help them fish and she went to help. And with that we hunted deep within salmon seasons.
1890. So yeah. Soon Quinn's going to spit out an answer! Hope your enjoying. * * *
