|Chp. 21: Log man|

I was watching as Quinn untied the tree trunks from the mule patted his butt and took his saddles off. Ruby had gotten a bucket of water ready for him which he greedily drank up now entering his break period of time.

There was tons of wood. Ruby turned to Raegan who was admiring the tent and she came up next to him. "Looks nice." Raegan commented and Ruby grinned at the compliment. "Good, I hoped you'd like it. I worked hard." Ruby responded. Raegan touched the threadwork. "I didn't know you could do that." Raegan mentioned.

"I didn't Silver did. You know she's actually nice if your nice to her." Ruby told Raegan. Raegan glanced at me as I sat outside of the tent halfway in halfway out on the furs. Quinn was carrying some logs over into the fire place which he lined up into a tepee.

He stacked some up in the middle and then put some pine straw and easy burn wood into it as well. Quinn looked over at me and smiled some. "But she did teach me some of it, so I can sew our clothes back." Ruby said with a smile.

"Well. . . that's useful, let's just not have constantly sewed clothes." Raegan responded and Ruby nodded. Erick looked over at me as him and Hiro dragged over a tree trunk. He smiled a little which I did not return simply sat there on the tent watching Quinn.

"Did you cut down trees?" I asked as Quinn as he came over. "Yeah we cut down two healthy trees, took a bit with the axe but we got it done. And then some trees that were falling down, that will be for the fire." Quinn said and I nodded.

My eyes shifted back over to the huge tree trunks. "The mule did good, he enjoyed a walk. But we're going to let him recover from the move and the wood pulling. He'll get a good long break. They all will. But we'll let them get their energy run out though with walks." Quinn said.

I nodded. "You know a lot about horses." I commented. Quinn bit his lip. "When I was younger I was taught a little bit. And interacted with some as well." Quinn said. The most he had ever revealed of his past. Quinn never talked of his past so this was shocking.

And I soaked it all in. But I wasn't going to press Quinn for answers to his past. He might get agitated if I did. Quinn brushed some of his silver-white hair from his face as he glanced back at the fireplace. "This place is coming together nicely." Quinn commented.

"It is." I noted looking around. The two big tents, the wood that sat around, the horses tied up grazing the shrubs and grass around. "I was thinking of building a small little roof over the horses head for when it snows." Quinn said and I nodded.

"Maybe put some wood shavings and ashes when its not of use underneath their hooves." Quinn said and I nodded once more. "It'll help protect their hooves some." Quinn responded and I nodded at that. "So you and Ruby got along?" Quinn asked. "Yeah, she's not that bad I guess." I responded.

Quinn smiled. "Her brother on the other hand." I started. "Don't even Silver." Quinn responded and I crossed my arms over as Lupa went to go irritate Eden some into playing with her. "I have a good feeling about this place." Quinn said.

I raised an eyebrow. "A good feeling?" I asked with interest in my voice and Quinn nodded at that. "A very good feeling. This place is far away from the cities and civilization so we won't be able to shop there but I have a good feeling." Quinn stated.

"More people means more mouths but it also means more help and if things go good and if we get along well and go with them I'm sure that they have a nice place set up." Quinn said touching the fur pelt that I hung up and then he looked inside.

"But we're already doing good, we have our tents almost finished. Because of that we'll reinforce them and then put a wooden top over the horses head for when it begins to snow and we'll be possibly building them a tent as well depending on what we find around here." Quinn spoke and I nodded.

Everything seemed to be going good so far and that I was thankful for. I loved the times were everything was going good. Although we never really chopped wood down before, we typically just scavenged for the wood that we could muster up and find around everywhere.

That's what we did. Scavenged for the wood around, hunted, made things but now they were cutting down trees to reinforce the tents and help the horses. I won't be surprised if they decided to clear a few trees around here to put some things down. Who knows maybe this will become a base of operations?

All I know was that things were going good now. Yes the bears were here but they weren't as bad as I thought them to be. Except maybe Raegan. But it was obvious Quinn wasn't going to leave me and that they weren't going anywhere either until they had an answer.

At this point I didn't care if Quinn said yes. Now that we had left that place things seemed to be lightening up since we got here. If Quinn did say yes then he said yes and we now joined a cause to take back the world and what not.

But things were going good and I liked it when things went good and that's all that mattered. My eyes shifted to all the wood and the bears moving around the camp. Everything seemed to be going good and for that I was grateful. Grateful for this.

Once night had fallen Quinn started the fire and now it was blazing while the food was roasted over the fire. Four dumb hares wandered over and Lupa snapped each one's neck like it was nothing and proudly brought it back so Quinn skinned the hares and was now making the meat for us all to eat.

A big feast for us and we had cooked all the meat and now I had all the furs sewing it into one of our big blankets of small animal fur. Moles, hares, the occasional minks we find when we are out hunting.

Now the hare was being roasted in oils that Hiro had brought with, I swear he had everything good. They set up a thing to turn the hare meat on and Quinn was currently turning it. Ruby had decided to come sit with me and watch me as I pushed the thread through the hare's fur.

"Is that a blanket?" Ruby asked. "Yes, it's a small animals blanket. Any small animal we hunt we stitch onto this for it can cover both of us. The black hare however is going to be gloves." I said looking at the black hare's pelt which I'd be cutting and sewing after this.

Ruby nodded. "Can you make me gloves?" Ruby asked tilting her head to the side making her black hair fall to the side. "Yeah I can try if I have some leftover pelt, if I don't I'll need to find another hare." I responded cutting off the needle and setting the blanket down on my lap.

The blanket brought warmth to my legs through the fleece pants I had changed into to go to sleep in. And my sheepskin coat that brought warmth towards the upper region. With the blanket now done I grabbed the black hare pelt and went to cutting it with my dagger.

Of course I had my hand down to measure everything as the smell of roasting hare filled the air while Quinn turned the four pieces of rabbit while we all waited for them to be done. My mouth watered at the thought of the oiled rabbit.

Lupa was laying down with her head between her paws dozing off waiting for her share of the rabbit to be given. Her muzzle had a bit of red from the blood of snapping each hare's neck. I smiled at Lupa as I measured the exact glove after wrapping it around my hands.

Cutting that I stitched it together next and tied it off before using the scraps of the other pelt for the next glove and soon I had black gloves. Not the same texture as not all fur is the same, but some warm and toasty black gloves for the cold.

Ruby still watched me as I put the gloves back in the tent and came back to take a seat next to her. Lupa was now watching me her head cocked to the side. 'What were you doing?' Lupa asked. "Making gloves." I told her as she came up to me.

Lupa nodded as she came to my feet and laid down on the boots not even caring that it was an uncomfortable surface. Quinn was still roasting the rabbit. The wood had begun to reinforce the tents and the boys had begun on the cover for the horse.

They were like log people sometimes. They had tied together five pieces of wood so far to make the cover for the horses. And lots more wood to go for the tents and the horse to reinforce everything and then they'd be cutting down more trees for this little operation.

"Foods done."

All it took was those two words and everyone was up there to get their food. Everything was going so good. But like everything it might me a calm before the storm.
