Part Fifty

CARL'S POV
I woke up in the hospital room with Taylor unconscious by my side. I sat up, there was a nurse standing just outside the room talking to someone. She looked in and saw I was awake. I slid off Taylor's bed and watched the nurse walk over to me.

"Your sister came to get you last night, but nobody had the heart to split you two apart." she explained awkwardly. "Well, you're gonna have to leave now. We have to m--"

"Could you call me if she wakes up? J-just keep me updated." I stammered, I felt like I was going to breakdown again and I just wanted to leave. She nodded, smiling sympathetically at me. I grabbed my phone off the small table and speedily left the room, trying not to cry until I had gotten home.

"Carl! Are you alright?" Fiona exclaimed as I walked back into the house. She came up and hugged me, and at that moment I burst into tears.

"Why did this happen to her? She was such a nice person." I sobbed into Fiona's shoulder. I could tell Fiona was crying now too.

"Life is cruel sometimes.. it's not your fault." she told me, her voice shaking.

**********

Over a week has passed since Taylor went into hospital. I've not been to school, I've barely been outside. The hospital wouldn't let us visit her which made me feel even worse. My sleep pattern was entirely fucked and I was hardly eating or talking. I stumbled downstairs at 2pm for lunch, the rest of my siblings sat around the small kitchen table.

"Hey, kid! How ya feeling?" Fiona chirped, I just nodded, sitting down in a free chair. She placed a sandwich in front of all of us, sitting down with her own. As we were eating, my phone began buzzing. I pulled it out my pocket and read the caller ID.

"It's the hospital!" I practically screamed, answering immediately.

"Hello?" I spoke calmly into the phone.

"Hello, is this Taylor's boyfriend? Carl?" the voice asked.

"Yeah. How is she?" I asked quickly.

"W-well, she had a surgery recently.." they began. "She didn't make it."

"What?" I breathed. The call went silent, as did I.

"I'm so sorry.." they spoke, I hung up and threw my phone to the floor, smashing the screen.

"Carl?" Fiona asked, everyone had stood up and were standing behind me.

"She died during a surgery." I told them, sitting on the couch.

"W-what? No!" Debbie began to sob, holding Liam.

"Taylor?" Liam asked, confused. Fiona sat down and hugged me, tearing up.

"I'm so sorry, Carl." she mumbled into my shoulder. My best friend was dead. My first serious girlfriend was dead. She was my whole world, and now she's gone. If her cheer stunt hadn't fallen she wouldn't be in hospital dead right now. I didn't know how I felt, I felt numb and empty. Taylor Reed is dead.
