Chapter 55

"Rafael, whatever it is you're trying to do, you don't have to do this." She begged him, her voice was shaky and she was trembling, especially since the car was going on full speed. She clung on to the grab handle, shutting her eyes and taking deep breaths at intervals and then opening them to try to talk to him but he wasn't listening. He had his eyes focused on the road.

Rafael stepped on harder on the accelerator and the car got faster.

Olivia got scared. She was almost screaming. She looked at the road, it was literally empty. She couldn't see any cars or people.

She checked the speedometer, it was running at a hundred and sixty kilometers per hour, that was really fast, faster than the regular speed of any car she had ever been in. What was wrong with him? Was he trying to get them killed? To get her killed? Olivia held on tight to her seatbelt, she was losing her breath. What on earth was he doing?

She quickly turned to him.

"Why are you doing this?" Her voice was shaking now. "Why are you being like this?"

Rafael's eyes didn't move from the road.

Olivia turned to the road, she didn't like it, she hated it, she hated the way she was beginning to feel, she hated how fast they were going. She turned back to him.

"Is it because of what I said ?" She swallowed hard "Fine, I take it back, I take it all back. I don't love you anymore, so stop the car."

Rafael rolled his eyes. He stepped on the accelerator harder, gripping his steering as hard as he could.

Two hundred kilometers per hour now.

Olivia was heart started to race, her chest area became tighter all of a sudden, her head was spinning too. There was a bridge ahead, she could see it. Just at that moment, her memories began to get clouded and then push themselves back into her head. It was happening all over again, that moment, it was nineteen ninety six all over again. She was beginning to remember all of it.

How heated the car was as her mother and her father sat in the front seats having that long fight, how extremely scared and terrified she had been especially with all that rain.

Talking about rain.

She heard the loud rumbling of thunder again. It was about to rain. Olivia looked away from the clouds, tightening her grip on her seatbelt saying a short prayer in her head. Another rumble and then it started to rain.

"Mummy."

She opened her eyes again the moment she heard a tiny voice in her head, it was her voice, it was her voice from twenty three years ago. Olivia was beginning to shake all over, she was trembling just as they got on the bridge.

""B-baby,I need you to listen to me okay, your Daddy and I, We've decided that we can't stay here anymore. So we are going to go somewhere better, somewhere safe okay? Mummy needs you to stay awake till we get into the car, can you do that for me?"

It was coming back, her memories, her memories from that night, Olivia started to hit her chest, it was like her lungs were clashing and refusing air into her body.

"We don't have to leave- I already told you Adaora, we can't stay here and you know why,"

She could feel a sharp pain in her belly, she wanted to throw up.

"Stop." She said almost in a whisper but Rafael was just busy looking at the road to even bother. Visions of the blue truck began to cloud her head as the rain got worse.

"Please Stop the car." She begged him as tears welled up in her eyes. She could barely speak a full sentence without her words shaking, she was beginning to feel really faint now just as the tears started to fall. She was beginning to imagine the blue truck in front of them just as the car got faster. Her heart was racing, her head was racing, she could barely keep her hands and legs from trembling so hard.

"Watch out!"

She remembered how her mother yelled the moment the truck got really close to her father's car. Rafael made a quick turn like he was heading for the railings. She was crying loud now and he just didn't care, he was trying to drive off the bridge.

Rafael could feel his hands tighten the steering, he wasn't sure he was in control anymore, memories of his last fight with Constance began to cloud his head now, memories of the last day he saw his family, of the last day he saw his daughter, he wanted to end it, he wanted to end all of it at that point .

"Stop the car!" Olivia turned to him. "Rafael, stop the car right now!" Olivia yelled as loud as she could just as Rafael was almost close to driving off the bridge. He had lost it. He hadn't even realized how close to killing them he was. He snapped out of it last minute and lightened his feet from the accelerator, reducing his speed right in time for him to step on the breaks quickly. The car came to a fast stop right after the tires made a loud screeching sound, a few inches from the thick railing. They almost flew out through the windscreen.

Rafael was breathing fast.
What did he just do? Why did he just do it?

Olivia too.
She quickly undid her seatbelt, opened the door as fast as she could and rushed out of the car, her legs trembling as she bended over with her hands on her belly. She could barely walk.

Rafael was panting for air. He rubbed his forehead as he heard her throw up in the rain, behind the car. He sniffed and then undid his seatbelt too. He rushed out of the car to check if she was okay. She wasn't, how could she be after what had happened? She was almost throwing up all her insides. She was so sick and traumatized.

Rafael waited. He waited for her.
Olivia wiped her mouth with the back of her hands the moment she was done, raising her head up while trying to stand straight, she slowly turned to him.

Rafael exhaled.
He felt really ashamed of himself. He couldn't even bring himself to look at her but she didn't stop, she walked up to him before he turned to her.

"Olivia-" he started right before she slapped him, really hard.

Rafael scoffed in surprise, of course he expected it but it surprised him a lot. He could taste the blood that came up from his cheek after he had bit it unintentionally. He slowly raised his head to turn it back to her.

"How could you?" Her lips were trembling. "How-" she drew in a deep breath

Rafael wished he could say something, he knew she was giving him a chance to explain himself or apologize but he couldn't. He wanted to scare her, to terrify her and it worked even if he knew he had gone too far.

He glared at her, not bothering to show any signs of weakness or remorse, hiding every trace of regret just so she didn't see.

"You're terrified." He told her "Good."

Olivia glared at him in disbelief. She scoffed

"What?"

"Now you'd know better than to act on how you feel because I don't care." His voice was so cold. "If I could do that to you even after I knew just how much you lost in the past, think of what more I could do to you, what other awful things I'm capable of." He sniffed just as the tears in Olivia's eyes multiplied  "Love?" He asked her forcing a tiny laugh "You love me?" He scoffed "What am I supposed to do with that information? Love you back?"

Olivia held her breath.

"Do you think I can ever fall in love with anyone? Especially someone like you? A complete nobody? You annoy me, everything about you makes me cringe!" He yelled at her angrily "So who are you to confess your feelings to me and what on earth were you expecting besides a cold mean reply from a douchebag like me? From a selfish man who is incapable of loving or caring for anyone besides himself? Why?!" He raised his voice louder that it made Olivia shake just a little bit "Why do you enjoy making yourself so pitiful? So easy all the damn time? Why do you like making bad decisions for yourself ? Why do you like hurting yourself and jumping into fire when you know just how badly it'd burn you? I'm asking you why?!"

Silence.

Olivia sniffed.
She was so hurt by his words but she managed to look at him so hard that her eyes were going to pop out.

"Is it that hard?" She asked him "Is it really so bad for someone to love you?"

He took a loud exhale.

"Is it really bad for someone to-" she drew a deep breath as a drop of tear rolled down her face. Rafael swallowed hard just as she shut her eyes again, trying to catch her breath. He could feel how tight his chest had become, how awful he felt to have been the one to make her relieve that day, to have been the one to make her cry like that. He could almost feel himself take a step to clean her eyes but he held back.

Olivia sniffed.
That was enough, enough talking and enough crying especially since she was beginning to get so cold from being drenched. Her hair was soaked and so was her dress as it glued to her skin, rain water tickling down her nose, mixing with her tears.

She nodded slowly. She perfectly understood, it was useless, it was useless talking to him. She turned to leave, she couldn't stand him, not anymore, not after what he did.

He grabbed her hand

"You can't go home under the rain, I'd drive you," He pulled her to the car.

"Get away From me!" Olivia's voice broke as pulled her hand away from his and then pushed him as hard as she could "Don't ever touch me again!" She yelled at him.
Rafael stood still. He didn't move, he couldn't blink. He watched her turn again and started to limp away. He wanted to go after her but he was numb.

Olivia didn't stop.

Churn!

Olivia paused at the sound of her phone. She slowly got it out from her purse, taking a deep breath as she pushed the rain drops from her face so she could see what it was. There was a text message from Amy.

Olivia didn't hesitate. She needed a distraction, she opened it.

"She's awake!"

Rafael had his eyes glued to her, wondering why she had suddenly stopped walking.

She started to walk faster again, as fast as she could. She was almost running. He watched her hail a cab that drove towards her, it stopped and she got in. Rafael took a step to stop her before the car drove off. His phone beeped too.

He slowly got it out of his pocket. It was a text. He hesitated for a while, drawing a deep breath as his Doctor's name popped up on his screen.
He opened it

"Request approved. We should meet up now."

Rafael exhaled and then slid the phone back into his pocket. He rushed to his car, got in and then drove off.
