Chapter 45

Olivia couldn't stop pacing in front of the huge white transparent  door with the inscription "Emergency room" written in red on it.

Two hours.

It had been exactly four hours since the doctors were in there and yet no one had left for a second to deliver any news or update on how the surgery was going.

She was worried. No matter how much Benita and Tony asked her not to, she couldn't help herself. She kept pulling her fingers one after the other, muttering some words to herself, words that seemed like prayers.

She just wanted some news, any news at all. The silence and her anxiety were killing her.

Rafael exhaled.
He tried not to look too much. He checked his watch like he had somewhere else to be.

"A Doctor,"

Olivia  turned quickly to the door as she saw a man in a white coat walk to it. They all got up from their seats as it opened and the man walked out.

"Doctor." Olivia rushed to stand in front of him, stopping him from taking another step. The old man paused and stared at her from the brim of his glasses.

"The little girl," she started looking in his eyes "There was a little girl that was brought in here some minutes ago. Grace, Grace Silver-"

"I'm sorry, we can't give out any information on our patient's welfare except it's to family-" The man tried to leave again.

"That's me." Olivia stood in his way again "I am family, I'm her mother." Olivia placed her hand on her chest. "Olivia, Olivia Silver." She said beating her chest gently. The man paused and looked at her for a short while like he was trying to make sure.

"Let her through Doctor Uche," Rafael said looking at the doctor from where he stood. The man slowly turned to him.

What was going on? Olivia wondered.
Did they know each other?

"She's saying the truth. She's the patient's mother and she's also my client."
The man exhaled weakly and turned back to Olivia.

"You can see her but not right now. She's still in a critical state."

"Cri—" Olivia took a deep breath. That didn't sound good "Critical state?"

"Coma."

She placed her hand over her mouth quickly, trying to stop herself from screaming.

"We were able to stop the internal bleeding but she hurt her head too much and this led to a coma. The other doctors are rounding up with the surgery. You can only see her after they do." The man exhaled "I'm really sorry."

Olivia drew a deep breath as the man walked away from her. Benita rushed to her. Rafael tried to keep his eyes on her, he could tell how hurt that news must have made her. He exhaled as the doctor drew closer to him

"Doctor," he called the man's attention.
He stopped

"Rafael,"
Rafael slowly turned to him to give him his full attention.

"Be honest with me," He told at the man and then sighed "Is she going to be okay?"

The man turned to look at Olivia for a second, he could see how Benita kept rubbing her back to calm her as she stood there, too numb and in shock to move. He slowly turned back to Rafael.

"Look, Rafael, I won't lie to you, her condition is really critical. For now, I can't really say when she's going to open her eyes or anything. All I can say, all I can advice you all to do is to put everything in the hands of God and hope she responds fast to treatment."

Rafael buried his gaze on the ground quickly. He was really disappointed. He didn't know what to say or do.

"And about that other thing we talked about-"

Rafael raised his head to look at him. The man exhaled. He had a whole lot of concern in his eyes.

"Do you still plan on going through with it?"

Rafael hesitated for a while like he was trying to think it through before he nodded slowly.
"Any word from the hospital yet?"

The man exhaled and then shook his head

"None yet." He told him "I know you hate me trying to talk you out of it but please Rafael," The man looked into his eyes "Can you not consider dropping this whole thing? Can we at least try to find some other way? A better way that does not involve-" he paused "You know-"

Rafael exhaled. He placed his hands on his hips.

"I wish it were that easy."

"What about them?" The man turned to Tony and the rest. "Do they know what you're about to do? Do they support it?"

"It was hard at first." He nodded "But they know when I've made up my mind about something there's no going back. Tony is still strong headed about it and nanny Benita, nanny Benita keeps trying to act like she doesn't know but I know she thinks about it every day. They'd have to learn to accept it soon. They'd have to learn to accept that it's my decision. It's what I've chosen to do."

"And your parents? Your mum? Have you told her yet? "

Rafael scratched  his brows.

"A news like that is going to break their hearts Rafael. If they really mean anything to you, you should tell them. "

"I can't." Rafael blurted out trying to keep his voice as low as possible "Maybe some other time but not right now." He exhaled "Just work on getting a feedback from the hospital, allow me to bother with the rest."

"Grace!"

They all turned quickly at the sound of Austin's voice as he ran down the long hallway as fast as he could, the wind pulling his jacket behind him, his tie was way down his neck and the first three buttons of his shirt were undone.

He reduced his pace the moment he noticed their presence, the moment he saw Olivia standing in front of that door looking so depressed. She wasn't the only one, Austin didn't look better than her.

"Olivia." He called her name, walking past Rafael and the doctor, heading straight to where Olivia stood, the best parts of her face covered in her tears. He wasn't running anymore. He was almost staggering now, his eyes only on her. He got closer.

Austin didn't know what to say especially since she kept glaring at him the way she did.

"I-I came straight from the airport the moment I got the news." He told her

"What exactly happened?" Benita asked him, he  turned to Benita.

"I don't really know but according to what everyone at the house said, it looks like she was being chased by one of the maids."

Olivia scoffed out loudly. She was just tired of it, tired of all the lies. She knew that house and family like it was her own. She knew how much the maids were taught to respect and serve the Silvers and every member of their family. No maid would dare do something like that.

"A maid?" Benita was really surprised "Why would a maid be after a little girl?"

Austin turned to Olivia. He slowly reached for her arms and then held them gently

"I don't know anything yet but I promise you, I'd get to the bottom of this and when I do, I'd make whoever that is responsible for doing this to Grace pay."

Olivia hesitated for a while, she didn't want to talk much. She didn't have anything to say. She slowly reached for his hand and pulled it away from hers.

"Stop making promises you never keep." She said almost in a whisper, trying to avoid eye contact with him.

"Where is she?!" Victoria yelled as she ran into the hallway, with her sister behind her, taking everyone's attention. "My grandchild," she quickly rushed to the doctor and grabbed him by his coat. She had tears in her eyes, smudging her mascara and taking it down her face.

"Mrs Victoria-" the Doctor started

Victoria let him go quickly. She rushed down to the hallway the moment she sighted Austin

"My baby, where is she ? What on earth happened to her?"

"Mum-" Austin started just as Victoria gently grabbed his arm, glaring into his eyes.

"What happened to her? Where is she?"
Austin had no words. He didn't know what to say.
Olivia scoffed. She knew this woman too well to be fooled by her drama. Victoria slowly turned.

"What is she doing here?" She asked Austin "What are you doing here?" then she asked Olivia.

"Mum, Olivia is Grace's Mother, she has every right to be here."

"Grace's Mother?" Victoria snorted . "The last time I remember, Grace didn't have a mother, how can you call a woman that abandoned her child a mother?"

"I did no such thing!" Olivia snapped at her "I never abandoned my child and you know it! You took her from me! All those years you never let me see her, you never let me see her the day she was born, even after I got out, you still never let me be with her now look what has happened-"

"Oh please." Victoria cut her off "Don't be overly dramatic now. You didn't want your child, you hated her and didn't want her because she reminds you of Andrew and all the horrible things he did to you. I saved that baby, I was there when she took her first breath, her first walk, when she said her first words, I took care of her all the time she was sick, not you, me. I'm her mother, I'm the only one that should be responsible for her, you don't deserve her, not after what you did to her father."

"Not here mum," Austin told her just as Olivia burst into laughter, the most sarcastic laughter anyone had ever heard her make before, clapping her hands while she kept staring at Victoria.

Even Victoria was surprised. She wasn't expecting that reaction at all especially when Olivia's laughter turned to a huge frown immediately with more tears in her eyes.

"What a great speech." She told Olivia. "The best I've ever heard since I got out of jail. How many hours did it take you to construct that?"

"What?"

"Because the Victoria I know, isn't the type to bother about anyone else except herself. You must think I'm stupid to believe anything you say, to believe those fake tears of yours." Olivia glared at her "I know you did this, I know you are responsible for this and just like you did six years ago, you're trying to pin it on someone else, a maid. really? That's really pathetic and low Victoria even for you-"

"How dare you?" Victoria raised her hands just so they could collide hard with Olivia's face before Austin caught it quickly, a huge frown covering his face. They all turned to look at him.

"Mum!" He yelled at Victoria in a way that it echoed down the hallway, almost making her heart leap out of its cage. "Haven't I told you? Haven't I warned you not to do this again?" Austin asked her. She could see how angry he was, everyone could. No one had ever seen him in that state before, no one except Victoria.

"I asked you not to hurt Olivia or Grace ever again didn't I?"

"A-Austin," Victoria stammered his name.

"Austin what is wrong with you?" Victoria's sister rushed to them "How can you disrespect your mum like this in front of all these people?"
Victoria pulled her hand forcefully away from his hold.

"You ungrateful child!" She yelled at him, slapping him as hard as she could "How dare you! How dare you try to embarrass me like this?!"

Austin's face was red but he managed to raise it up and maintain his cold stare on her. What was he going to do? What should he have done? Everyone watched how furious he was. He was looking at Victoria like he was going to kill her, like he wanted to.

"After all I've done for you?" Victoria continued "I did all this for you and this is how you've chosen to repay me? How dare you?"

"Victoria," her sister hurried to her, holding her arms, trying to calm her down. "Victoria that's enough, people are beginning to watch."

"I don't care!" Victoria yelled pulling her arms away. "Let them watch, let them see how this ungrateful son of mine has chosen to disrespect me because of this woman just like his brother did and now look at what happened to him." She narrowed her gaze at Austin. "You have no idea how much is on the line here do you? You have no idea what I've done just to protect you and every time I think I'm risking everything I and your father built for you, you keep running back to this woman, this same woman that would be our family's downfall. All for what? All for some silly crush you had for her eleven years ago?"

"I'm going to find out what really happened to my daughter Victoria." Olivia took another step towards her "And once I find out you played the littlest role in what happened, best believe I'm going to come for you."

Victoria turned to look at her

"I'm going to make you pay for hurting her and me. I'd bring hell on your home and empire, hell you've never seen before. I'm going to put your son completely against you and everyone you care about, I'm going to ruin you and your family, me, and when I'm done, I'm going to kill myself."

Victoria scoffed.

"I'd die right beside you because I'd rather die than watch you live on this earth as a free woman after everything you've done."

"How dare you?" Victoria's sister yelled at her "You ungrateful wrench, after what this family has done for you-"

Olivia turned to the woman in front of her

"You?"  Victoria asked her with a very light chuckle "Who do you think you are to threaten me?" She continued "What do you have? Who do you know? With what army?" Victoria chuckled "Do you really think you stand a chance against me, alone?"

"Who said she's alone?"

Everyone turned at the sound of Rafael's voice as he walked towards them, with Tony right behind him, glaring at her with both his hands folded on his chest. Susan blinked as she stared at Rafael, why was he getting involved?

Victoria could feel her heart almost jump from her mouth the moment he walked to her. Philip's words, rushing into her head as fast as they could.

She was beginning to see the resemblance at that moment between him and his father, the Godfather. She could see him in him. Just looking at him made her tremble on every part of her body especially the moment she saw the bandaid in his arm.

"Mrs Victoria Silver," Tony started "It's really not nice to threaten someone especially after you tried to get them killed." Tony smiled at her "People might begin to misunderstand-"

Victoria gulped hard. That was him, it had to be, the man responsible for leaking that news, the owner of someday. It was him.

"I'm going to find out what it is you're hiding." Rafael told her. "Just how much you've hurt and taken from people and when I do, be rest assured that you're going to meet your waterloo in time, but then that's it. I wouldn't like to advice my client to file for sole custody of her child because I'm going to have to appear in court again and win the case just as I did before and as you can see, I'm not really fit to make public appearances." He pointed at his bandaid just so she could see what he meant.

"You've done a lot taking care of Grace since she was born." He continued "And we can't thank you enough for that but from today, Olivia is going to take it from here. Until she wakes up, until the truth is really revealed, I just can't trust her around you or anyone else that lives in your house anymore. So My client is going to be taking back her role and place in her daughters life as her mother and sole custodian." Rafael drew in a deep breath "I mean if you're not comfortable with these terms, we could go by the law and meet in court then you'd have to tell the judge just what you were doing when the accident happened and why your maids would have intentions and power to want to hurt your grandchild."

Austin lowered his gaze to Victoria, they all did. Why was she trying to avoid eye contact with Rafael and why wasn't she saying anything? That was unlike her. The Victoria they all knew, would have at least said a thousand words and tried to resist him by now.

Rafael scoffed

"I guess we've come to an understanding now." He said and  turned to walk away.

"You're nothing like your father." Rafael halted for a second just as they all turned to Victoria . Rafael turned too. "At least your father knows the importance of family, who to trust and who not to trust. He'd never sacrifice so much for someone who means nothing. For someone whose life isn't worth a strand of hair on his head."

Rafael rolled his eyes.

"You shouldn't trust her." She continued "Not for her looks or how timid she tries to fool you all with. She's not a good person."

"That seems like our problem," Tony cut her off "Not yours. So far so good," he took a step to her "You're the only scary one here, the only one no one should trust."

Victoria scoffed.
They weren't listening to her, none of them were. She looked at them one after the other. How could all of them gang up against her like this? Even her own son.

"Let's Just go sister." Her sister tugged her arm. "They are not worth it. Let's just go back home."

Victoria could feel all her strength leave her just as she let her sister pull her away. She didn't fight it, she didn't want to. She was so embarrassed. She felt so much shame as all those eyes were on her.
They all watched as her sister pulled her away. Untill they weren't in sight anymore.

Olivia slowly raised her head to Rafael. He was looking at her too. Why did he do that? Why did he do what he just did?

Rafael exhaled. He didn't understand either.
He slowly took his eyes away from her and turned the moment Susan demanded his attention. She watched him nod at her and walk out of the hallway with her.

They were talking. Just what were they talking about?

"Come my child," she felt Benita hold her arm gently, leading her to the bench where visitors sat. "Sit down and rest your legs."
She needed it.

After how much courage she had shown minutes ago, Olivia knew, she needed all the rest she could get. She let out a deep breath as she sat on the bench while Benita sat right beside her. She leaned close to Benita and rested her head on her shoulders. She shut her eyes slowly.
