thirty-six; trouble ahead

"Snoke will know. He'll sense us- there's no physical way of us leaving the ship without him knowing-"

"We'll lead him to believe we're leaving for a mission."

You look at him, mindlessly swinging your cherry-red lightsaber around. The whirring noise calms you down. He's leaning against the only piece of furniture in the training room- a metal table holding numerous random training devices. Some of them are there to inflict intolerable and unspeakable pain. The others are there to remove that pain.

You've never had the misfortune to use either of them.

"Are you stupid?"

His eyes dart to yours as you ask him this, slightly slanted and red from the lack of sleep. He has dark shadows under his eyes, and his normally smooth face is now darkened with rubble. How long has it been since he's had a good night's sleep?

You don't give him chance to respond.

"Have you forgotten that Snoke can read minds? That he's one of the most powerful beings in this universe?"

He straightens up, places his hands in the pockets of his loose black robe-pants. The look he gives you is enough to make you regret your words, because of course him of all people know how powerful Snoke is.

"Wasn't there a time where you were afraid to call me names?" he asks, his tone soft as he takes a step towards you and raises his hands to your face.

You flinch, not sure what you're expecting him to do, and he drops his hands again, a hurt expression on his face as he takes a step back.

"Why did you flinch?"

"Kylo, this isn't the time-"

"Why did you flinch?"

"Well it wouldn't have been the first time you've hurt me," you say angrily. The hurt look on his face takes a darker shade. Regret floods his features. Hurt swims in his eyes.

"I would never hit you."

He keeps his eyes dropped to the floor, pain flashing across his features even though he's desperately trying to keep himself composed. It softens your heart.

"Do we hate each other?"

He doesn't answer you, but hangs his head a little lower, as if he knows the answer but is holding it back.

"What changed?"

Again, he remains quiet. You reach out across him and place your lightsaber flat on the table, and then grab his chin in your hand.

You can feel him melt under your touch; it's like his entire body lets out a sigh of relief. He lifts his head and faces you, his warm eyes gazing deeply into yours. Electricity courses through your veins; a surge of warmth takes over your stomach, and is quickly replaced by butterflies.

You realise something- your body hasn't and will never be subject to the Darkness that inhabits this starkiller base. It still reacts the same way it did the first time your skin came into contact with Kylo's. The connection, the physical link; it will never be corrupted.

So how did the mental connection slowly diminish? Where did it go?

For the first time in a month or so, you force yourself to try harder. You force yourself to see Kylo as you saw him that day you first kissed him.

To see him as he really is- just a kid, not much older than you. Confused and scared.

You pull him into your chest, standing on tip-toes so that your head rests on his shoulder.

"Kylo.." you mumble softly into his neck, your lips brushing against his smooth skin. "I don't want to waste any more time. My mother-"

No sooner had the word escaped your lips that his found yours, pressing softly at first; waiting for you to kiss him back. And as soon as you do, the kiss turns passionate; your hands got lost in his hair, his holding your face tightly, as if he wants to lock you both in this moment.

He pulls you back until the metal table starts digging into his back; he lifts himself up and sits on it, grabbing you by your waist and pulling you into him. You crash into his hips and he smiles, kissing you again. You run your fingers up his toned arms, before settling them back in his hair.

You feel the dark vibes around you lift with every breath of air you take between kisses- the brooding presence doesn't seem to affect you anymore. All the Darkness that had surrounded you and manipulated your thoughts, all the hatred that had floated around you that made you slowly start to despise him for turning good- which is what you had originally wanted, after all- starts to vanish into thin air.

You kiss him like you've been poisoned and his lips are the sole antidote; he kisses you like his lungs are devoid of all air and your lips are his lifeline.

His hands slowly start trailing down to your hips, and then lower, gripping you hard. Your hands are around his neck, pulling him so tightly into you that you're scared you're hurting him.

His lips suddenly stop working in sync with yours, and you kiss his jaw and then his lips again; almost begging for him to kiss you again. He gives you a quick kiss, but a distracted one, and he slowly pulls away, frowning at the door.

"What is it," you murmur breathlessly against his neck, laying a trail of kiss from his jaw to where the long scar running across his face starts.

"There's someone outside the door."

"I need you to kiss me again," you say, almost impatiently. "I need to know this makes me okay."

He doesn't react; it's as if he hasn't heard you. "It's Hux," he whispers grabbing you firmly by the wrist and pushing you gently to the side, and then proceeds to straighten his black sleeveless shirt. You wipe your lips on the back of your hand as you watch him compose himself.

Force-sliding the door open, the both of you find Hux standing outside, his glass electronic device in his arms.

Kylo frowns; you find yourself frowning too. He must be trying to probe his mind as are you; however, Hux's mind can't seem to be read.

You can both tell this is bad. Since when can't either of you read a non-Force user's mind?

And that's when you see it; a tiny holographic image coming straight from Hux's device.

A holograph of Snoke.

A menacing smile creeps onto Hux's face. "You'll be pleased to know that Supreme Leader has been informed of your activities."

"What activities?" you squeak, before remembering that you are above Hux and therefore should have nothing to be squeaking about.

But you are not above Snoke.

And neither is Kylo.

"I think you know exactly which activities I am referring to, Luna," he sneers, saying your name with a certain venom.

"Why is it that your mind is unreadable?" Kylo asks him, walking towards Hux. You can tell that he's enraged; fury is rolling off him like waves, crashing into you, fuelling your own hatred for this ruthless puppet of Snoke's.

"Supreme Leader has long ago suspected that you would fail him. He needed someone he could trust to.. Ahem, let's say, keep an eye on you two. I warned him of the dangers of this; and he, of course, being the supreme being that he is, knew that my mind would be too easily read by two skilled Force users."

"Answer my question!" Kylo bellows, grabbing the glass device and smashing it against the wall.

Hux's composure remains unfazed. "Simple. I've allowed him to experiment on me. The Force can no longer be used on me." He turns his gaze to you, his eyes cold and maniacal, the sinister smile still plastered on his face. "Go ahead and try."

"Oh and, you're going to regret you did that," he adds nonchalantly, pointing to the broken remains of his holograph-projecting device.

"What have you been telling Snoke?" you ask him, chills climbing your spine.

"Not much about you, if you'd believe it." Hux shifts his weight onto one leg, his face taking on a rather bored appearance. "About this naive mess," he continues, nodding towards Kylo, who is now almost purple in the face with rage, "you might as well ask me what I haven't been telling our Supreme Leader."

You consider grabbing your lightsaber and slicing him in half on the spot. But you know that that wouldn't be the wisest thing to do right now.

"He had so much faith in you, Ren. Or should I call you Ben, now that you have decided that carrying out our Leader's plan was just a phase to you?"

"I never asked to carry out his task- he turned me against my family, turned me against my own mind." Kylo stands up a little straighter, and with a firmer voice adds, "I don't need to explain myself to you."

Luna, we have to leave. Now. Snoke will not stop until we're both dead now that he thinks we will betray him.

Kylo's voice rolls into your brain, clear and soft.

I'm scared. You push the thought into his mind, and cast a quick glance at him. He clenches his jaw.

We need to get rid of Hux, he communicates back. Do you trust me?

You give a subtle nod, one that he catches from the corner of his eye.

"Stop it, I know what you two are doing." Hux takes a step back, a step out of the room, but Kylo extends his arm, trying to Force-pull him back in- only to find out that the Force does not physically work on him too.

So in one swift movement, he closes the distance between him and Hux, grabs him by the front of his robes, and extends his free arm, clutching his lightsaber that faithfully responded his call.

You follow his movement, the familiar grip of the lightsaber sending signals of strength to your entire body, letting you plant your feet firmly into the ground.

"Luna, ready to put our training to test?"
