Prologue

"C'mon Y/n!!" Kaneki pulled at Y/n's wrist to get her attention.

"What is it Kaneki?" She finally set her book down and turned her attention to her best friend since childhood, Kaneki.

"Are you coming with me and Hide to the spring festival this Saturday? Hide managed to rent a car for us to use for the day." Kaneki briefly explained to his friend.

"Ken, you know I can't. Mother would never allow me to head out without her. Plus I have more school work I'd like to get done." Although she was very bright, she was also a bit of a procrastinator. She would mostly always put her work off until later, it's a surprise that she manages to get it done in time and correctly too.

"Are you sure you won't be able to join us? It wouldn't be any fun without you." He admitted with his head slightly held low in disappointment. Y/n put a hand on his cheek and pulled his head so he could face her.

"Kaneki. I really do wish I could go. But you know my parents way too well to know that they would never allow of this. Now I must go, I hope you and Hide have a good time tomorrow." She smiled sweetly before turning her back and began her journey home.

When Y/n finally made it back home, she got smothered by her mother. "Y/n. Where on Earth were you? You've been gone for so long!"

"Mother, I was just taking a walk with Kaneki. Nothing to worry about ok? You really do worry too much." The young girl chuckled.

"What do you expect? You've gotta be careful when there are ghouls disguised as humans! You never know who to trust and I don't wanna loose my baby. If only your father hadn't gotten an important job here, we could've moved a long time ago." Y/n's Mother sighed.

"When's father gonna come back anyway? It's been months." Y/n returned the sigh as she hopped for a positive answer.

"Sweety, he won't be back for another 4 years. You know his job is not to be played around with.". Y/n's Mother explained. Her father worked as an agent to a secret agency that helps fend off any ghouls out of the country, if they are there of course. The agency also uses high tech products to track wondering ghouls. It's also working on a top secret invention that should be used to extinguish all ghouls in the city but no information was given about the agency to prevent information from getting to any ghouls or anyone that might use the information against them.

"I miss him mother." Y/n finally admits before getting pulled into a warm embrace by her mother.

"I miss him too dear but it's for the best. He's working hard to protect us and the rest of Tokyo. But if you just stay hopeful, you'll get to see him before you know it!" She gave Y/n a closed eye smile and pulled away from the hug.

"Thanks mom. I needed that!"

"'Mom'? Where did that come from?" Her mother playfully gasped.

"It'll go away soon, don't worry." The girl laughed before heading to her room to complete the piles of work she has been avoiding.

Hours later and Y/n was complete with her work, just in time for bed too. She yawned tiredly and made her way to her bed which was covered with a (favourite colour) doveit cover, (favourite colour) pillows of many shapes and sizes, and finally, a large (favourite colour) teddy bear laying in the middle of it. She moved the doveit out of the way and pulled out a comfy blanket before proceeding to wrap herself in a blanket burrito and cuddling with the bear.

(I always wanted a giant teady bear ;-;)

Soon sleep consumed her and she fell into a world of dreams and imagination. Birds and butterflies roaming the skies, beautiful creatures running around and playing in the bright green grass in which she was sitting, and mysterious soft music that could be heard from every corner playing.

She closed her eyes and enjoyed the peaceful setting.

But that peace was soon disturbed.

She felt herself laying in something wet, soaking her white summer dress which was decorated with red flower designs. She turned her gaze to what could be causing the uncomfortable feeling. Her breath hitched as a red liquid covered the green grass, which had started to quickly turn brown.

'Blood' the thought played at the girls head, her eyes growing wide and she could feel a few drops of sweat trail down her forehead.

She wanted to scream but no sound was emitted. She wanted to run but her legs felt like noodles. She wanted to close her eyes and pretend it wasn't there but her eyes refused to stare away from the red substance and decaying grass.

"Y/n-" A quiet voice caught her attention. She finally shifted her gaze from the blood to the source of the voice. Her eyes grew wider and her mouth hung open with her hand clasping over it.

"K-Kaneki?" Her legs granted her movement and she ran over to her friend, he had indescribable wounds placed over his body; parts of what seemed to be his organs were now hanging out of his stomache, his arms and legs had multiple deep cuts and wounds, and his blood mixed with the one covering the once green grass. "Kaneki!" She cried out once she finally made it to him and pulled him gently into her arms. " Kaneki, what-what happened? Ar-are you ok?!" As stupid as it must be, to ask a person who seems to be dying if they're ok, she really didn't know what to do in this situation. It was all so foreign to her.

"Y/n." The boy weakly called out once again. He forced himself out of her grasp and looked her in the eyes.

"Ka-Kaneki, your...your eye!" She took notice of his eyes, his left eye seemed to resemble one of....of a ghoul. And his hair, it had turned to a snowy white clolour. "Your hair." She stated in shock at her friend's sudden transaction.

"Y/n." He put a hand on her cheek and made her look at him. "I'm sorry."

____

"No, I'm sorry!" Y/n cried into her hands while sitting on the hospital chairs. It's incredible how something can be perfect then go to disastrous in just seconds. "Kaneki please come back."

"Kaneki no-" she woke up with a jolt, sweat trickling down her forehead and her breath slightly uneven. 'That was an odd dream' She thought while trying regaining her composure.

"Y/n!!" Her bedroom door bursts open, reveling Y/n's mother with a panicked look evident on her face. "Kaneki was admitted into the hospital!" She cried out.

Y/n felt herself shut down as she tried to comprehend what her mother had just told her. 'Hospital?' After her mind finally wrapped itself around the situation, she suddenly burst into tears. "Kaneki? Mother you can't be serious!" She looked at her slightly shaking hands. "Mother please tell me your joking."

"I'm sorry sweety."

___

"Don't leave me Kaneki. Please." She sniffled and whipped her tears away.

"Mrs. Y/n?" The doctor that was performing the operation on Kaneki called.

"Y-yes doctor." She stood up, hopping for good news.

"My name is Akihirou Kanou. But please call me Professor Kanou." He spoke in a rather intimidating tone.

"I'm sorry. Professor Kanou. But...Is he ok? How is he?"

"He should be ok. The operation was a success." He gave a menacing smirk while answering. "He should be awake soon and you'll be able to see him in a few hours." His smirk dropped into a bored frown.

"Thank you!" The girl took a deep bow. "Thank you professor Kanou!" Tears of job brimmed at the corners of her eyes and her smile was crooked but conveyed many happy emotions. 'I'll stay here until you're better Kaneki. I made the mistake of leaving you, I'm not doing it again.' She thought in determination. "But Professor Kanou? What exactly happened to him? How did he get here?"

"No need to worry about that now." He chuckled before walking away, leaving her there.
