Headcanon that Madelyn was supposed to be Cassandra's and Horace's second baby.

In The Royal Ranger, she is portrayed as being 15 years old. But the story of The Royal Ranger is 16 years after The Lost Stories. That means that when she's being apprenticed to Will, she should be at least 16 years old considering the fact that Cassandra was already pregnant during Will and Alyss's wedding.

So what's her age even? 15 or 16?

I think she's 15. It may not be too obvious, but a 15-year-old and a 16-year-old behave quite differently. So if that's sorted out, let's get on to the next mystery.

If Madelyn is Cassandra and Horace's only child, then how can Cassandra have been pregnant at Will and Alyss's wedding?

Well, she was. She was pregnant during their wedding and she and Horace were incredibly happy. But their dream didn't come true. Problems with pregnancy were genes in Cassandra's family (the fact that her mom died giving birth to her), and they struck again.

Cassandra miscarried.

It was an enormous shock for both her as Horace and the others and for a few months it seemed as if there wouldn't be a new heir to the throne.

But the Royal Couple got through it and decided to give it a new try another few months later. For the sake of their country, but also because they were not willing to give up their dream.

A dream that came true nine months later, when a beautiful little girl was born. Araluen had a new heir, and Horace and Cassandra had a daughter.

This was partly the reason why Maddie was such a spoiled brat. She was the Crown Princess, but, more importantly, she was Horace and Cassandra's first and only kid, and the second one conceived. The Royal Couple gave her (almost) everything she wanted because they wanted her to be happy, and because they would never be able to do that for another kid AND because they were afraid of losing her.
