The Three Factions

The Devils (悪魔, Akuma) are one of the Three Factions in High School DxD, alongside the Angels and Fallen Angels. There are two major types of Devils in the story: The Pure-Blooded Devils (純血悪魔, Junketsu Akuma), and Reincarnated Devils (転生悪魔, Tensei Akuma).

Summary

Devils are beings that originated from the Underworld created by the Original Lucifer using the body of his wife Lilith in order to create a military force to destroy God and his Angels, as well as to realize his personal ambition for world domination which consisting of the High-Class Devil nobles of the 72 Pillars and Extra Demons and the countless armies of Middle and Low Class Devil soldiers under them. The total life span of a Devil is approximately 10,000 years. The Devils were originally ruled by the Four Great Satans prior to their death in the Great War. Following the end of the Great War, the descendants of the original Satans apart from Rizevim wanted to continue the Great War but were faced with opposition by other Devils, most prominently the Bael clan, who assumed authority after the death of their leaders. This started a civil war between the Devils with the descendants of the original Satans losing the war and a new government was formed among the Devils. The new government then appoints four new Satans through strength and accomplishment in the civil war.

After the formation of the new Devil government, Ajuka Beelzebub developed the Evil Pieces system to help replenish the decreased armies of the Devils, eventually creating the Rating Games. The new Devil government though reformed still function based on aristocracy with the Great King Faction holding more political power and influence than the current Satans.

Appearance

Devil

Devil Soldiers as they appeared in the anime

Most Pure-Blood Devils looks the same as Humans, albeit with one pair of black bat-like wings that can be hidden at will. However, those from the Phenex Household instead possesses bird-like wings made from fire. Devils are able to use their demonic powers to appear much younger than their physical age, for example Venelana looks as if she were the same age as her youngest child, Rias.

The are some devils who appears to have the characteristics of creatures and monsters such as members of the extinct House of Vepar being devils who appears akin to merpeople, members of the House of Forneus having the head of a sea monster like an anglerfish, Zephyrdor has pointy elf-like ears, and Roygun has two horns on her head.

Some pure-blood devils has multiple pairs of bat-like wings, however, unlike angels and fallen angels who can gain multiple wings over time, this is limited to those who are descended from the original Satans; such as Vali Lucifer, a Devil/Human hybrid, revealing his relation to the Original Lucifer by revealing his multiple bat wings in Volume 4 (four pairs in the anime and four in the manga). Rizevim Livan Lucifer has shown to have twelve bat wings in Volume 18, as well as Tsufaame Tereaku Leviathan in Highschool DxD Zero, and Ingvild Leviathan who has four pairs of wings.

Reincarnated Devils can come in a variety of shapes and sizes, such as the case with Tannin, a former Dragon King, Koneko Toujou, a Nekomata, and Enku (a Qilin).

Abilities

All Devils have enhanced physical abilities such as superhuman strength, endurance, and enhanced sense such as sight and hearing; in addition to being able to see clearly in the dark as creatures of the night. Devils are able to fly through using their bat-like wings, which are capable of retracting into their backs as if disappearing entirely. They also possess a passive ability called "Language", which allows normal people listening to them to hear it in the language they're most familiar with and vice versa. According to Rias in Volume 4, Devils are also immune to being sunburned.

Devils also wield demonic power, which was described in Volume 2 as letting them control phenomena, letting a Devil using their demonic power to create various elements ranging from fire, water, and lightning. As revealed in Volume 14, to use demonic powers, a Devil must first acquire the power of imagination and the power to create, as well as good sense for either. Devils who have higher demonic power are able to develop resilience against all manner of holy-based objects and weapons such as Light Weapons, whereas those with lesser will be eliminated.

One of the Four Great Satan or other Satan-Class Devils are easily able to destroy Japan several times over using their powers, which Sona noted in Volume 4 commenting about Serafall's "glitter." It is unknown how powerful Ultimate-Class Devils' attacks are, but since most High-Class Devils are capable of destroying an entire mountain using a demonic blast, it could be hinted that their immense power can cause greater damage than that.

Members of the 72 Pillars and Extra Demons, which consist of Pure-Blooded Devil nobles can inherit special innate abilities unique to their clan, though occasionally the children of the members who marries out of the clan into another one would also inherit their abilities, becoming a common practice among the remaining pillars. Those from the Phenex has the Immortality, in addition to powerful Fire and Wind-based powers; those from the Bael and Gremory Clan who were related or born to Venelana Gremory (née Bael) has the Power of Destruction; and those from the Abaddon Clan inherits the Hole. All of these unique abilities appears to originate from the progenitor of the clan such as the First Bael Head, Zekram Bael. All the Pure-Blooded Devil nobles who don't inherit such powers are looked down upon, even by members of their own family.

Devils also have the ability to cast magic spells, having developed their own system of demonic magic powered by demonic power. Examples being the ability to bind and later summon a Familiar, as well as Issei's Dress Break and Pailingual spells. The most common usage would likely be the magic circle used by Devils for travel, and especially to make contracts.

High-Class Devils are able to gain peerages, rule over other Devils depending on their family's rank and powers, and can have up to 15 "servants", which are represented by each piece in a chess game (Rook, Knight, Pawn, etc.). The High-Class Devil takes the position of "King". Lower-Class Devils are often looked down upon, and usually, serve a Devil of higher authority. High-Class Devils also have the ability to reincarnate Humans and other races into Devils through the Evil Pieces system, as seen with what Rias did with Asia Argento.

Weaknesses

A common weakness for all Devils is that they cannot go near/get involved with anything that has to do with the Biblical God, as they will suffer nasty side effects (headaches, immense pain, etc.), as seen when Issei couldn't go near the Church when he was talking to Asia, or when he tried to pray but only ended up collapsing from the pain soon after. They are vulnerable to holy objects such as crucifixes, holy water, and the Bible, and can get killed easily by Holy Swords and Sacred Gears with divine properties, such as Blade Blacksmith and the True Longinus (Asia's Twilight Healing, however, is a notable exception). These effects are caused by the system put in place by the Biblical God, which was being kept up by Michael and is now being kept up by Gabriel, and only she has the power to change the system.

They are also susceptible to light which significantly drains them of their energy once hit (in Volume 1, Issei comments that sunlight also appears to drain him of his energy, reducing him to normal human levels, at least at that time). Also, intense light, such as the light-based weapons used by Angels and Fallen Angels and the light swords used by exorcists, can severely wound, if not kill, a Devil. Devils with higher demonic power, however, can develop a certain degree of resistance to light.

Devils can also be infected with a cold that only Devils are susceptible to as seen when Issei and Saji came down with it, which made them unable to move. The Devil's face turns red and they gain a high temperature along with blurry vision.

Types of Devils

Pure-Blooded Devils (純血悪魔, Junketsu Akuma) are Devils such as the original Four Great Satans and the original Devils created by the Mother of all Devils; Lilith, including the first generation aristocrat Devils of the 72 Pillars and Extra Demons, each who ruled their own domain in the Underworld along with their pure blooded descendants. Each clan of 72 Pillars has a unique ability that is specific to their clan which originated from their progenitor, such as the Bael's Power of Destruction or Phenex's Immortality, as the descendants of the clans are born with such unique abilities which occasionally get passed to other clans as Pure-Blooded High Class Devils interbreed with each other.

Reincarnated Devils (転生悪魔, Tensei Akuma) are created by High-class Devils using Evil Pieces to reincarnate other species into Devils; who serve the High-class Devil who is their King. Reincarnated Devils also appear to have much higher fertility than Pure-Blooded Devils, as in the special novel High School DxD EX that takes place 30 years in the future, Issei's future children were born in a short amount of time, with Koneko and Kuroka's children being born on the same day.

Stray Devils (はぐれ悪魔, Hagure Akuma) are Reincarnated Devils who have diverted away from their masters for their own selfish desires. Without their masters to keep their powers in check, they become a great threat if their powers go beyond their control. The Devils take this case very seriously, and any Devil who becomes a Stray will usually be killed on the spot.

Mixed Heritage Devils (混合遺産悪魔, Kongō Isan Akuma) are devils either born between a pure-blooded devil and a reincarnated devil, or between two reincarnated devils. They could not be considered as Half Devils due to both their parents being devils, and are not considered Pure-Blooded Devils due to their diluted blood as High-Class Devils look down on reincarnated devils. Possible famous mixed heritage devil would be Coriana Andrealphus, which could explain why the Andrealphus clan is stated to be extinct in the Light Novel Volume 8, but considered active in the first lore.

Half Devils (半悪魔, Han Akuma) are Devils of mixed heritage created by the interbreeding of Devils and other species, most notably Humans. Due to the Pure-Blooded Devils pride and their obsession with pureblood purity, the half Devil descendants of the pure-blooded devil clans are often scorned and looked down upon. However, due to their mixed blood they gain the abilities of both species, as Half Devils with Human heritage can manifest Sacred Gears. Two famous Half Devils are Vali Lucifer and Ingvild Leviathan, who are the half-Human/half Devil descendants of the original Satan clans, in addition to being the possessors of the Longinus Sacred Gears.

Super Devils (超ちょう越えつ者しゃ, Chōetsusha), also known as Transcendental Beings are Devils considered irregular beings due to possessing abilities surpassing realm of Devils, making others wonder whether or not they can be considered devils. At first, three people were considered Super Devils: Sirzechs Lucifer, Ajuka Beelzebub and Rizevim Livan Lucifer who have power exceeding Satan-Class Devils; Sirzechs and Ajuka, in particular, has enough power to be considered among the "Top 10 Strongest Beings" using their full power. In fact, their coup d'etat against the Old Satan government succeeded partly due to Sirzechs and Ajuka's support. After the Evil Dragon War, due to their continuous and abnormal growth, the current Heavenly Dragons: Issei and Vali were nominated as Super Devil candidates. After the Hell Disaster, they were both officially certified as Super Devils after being approved by Zekram Bael. Furthermore, Hades' research created two Super Devils named Balberith and Verrine, but they haven't been certified by the underworld government.

Population

The population of Devils consisted of the original Four Great Satans and the Devils created by the Mother of all Devils; Lilith, which consisted of various Devil noble families from the 72 Pillars and Extra Demons as well as the commoner Devils who live in the territories of the Devil noble families who are subservient to the Original Satans. Countless devils died as a result of the Great War, with Lilith nearly dying from the strain of artifically reproducing too much Devils. During the Great War, 40 clans of the 72 Pillars were destroyed in the conflict as numerous High-class Devils of the 72 Pillars were killed along with their soldiers.

It is noted that Devils have exceptionally long lifespans described as almost infinite, but cannot reproduce easily as the rate of pregnancy among devils is very low, sometimes requiring would-be-parents hundreds of years to produce a single child and having more then 2 children is considered rare among devils.

Due to the excessive loss of population, the Evil Pieces system was created to replenish the number of Devil by reincarnating other species into devils, with humans being the most common choice among the species.

In recent times, many High-class Devil have started reincarnating humans who possess Sacred Gears as their devil servants in order to obtain the strength of the Sacred Gears in service of the Devils. As a result of the low population, it is common for male High-class Devils to have harems of multiple women in order to have a greater chance of producing children.

Ranking

Devil ranking chart

The Devils' ranking system, as explained by Rias

The Devils use a hierarchical system that is split into four different ranks. The ranking here refers to the hereditary title given to Devils base on their classes and clans and reflect on strength. They are:

Ranking Information

Special-Class Devils

A new class without any precedents, Special-Class Devil is awarded to those who have appropriate abilities, both social and political influence. It is bestowed upon those who have attained great achievements in the defense of the Underworld. The only Devils who have attained this rank are Vali Lucifer.

Ultimate-Class Devils

This class was the highest class a Devil could attain by either training or being born with great power (until the creation of the Special-class Devil rank). As a devil comes into this class, they gain a rank in the Underworld as Satan, Great King, King, Archduke, Archduchess, Duke, Duchess, Prince, or Princess.

High-Class Devils

This class belongs to most younger Pure-Blooded Devils from the 72 Pillars or the Extra Demon clans, who have yet to master their power, or to strong reincarnated Devils who have risen in rank. Once a Devil has attained this rank, they are given one of the following titles: Marquis, Marchioness, Margrave, Margravine, Count, Countess, Viscount, Viscountess, Baron, or Baroness.

Middle-Class Devils

This class belongs to Middle Class Devils who usually live in one of the High-Class Devil's territories, or to reincarnated Devils who have passed the Middle-Class promotion test. Once a Devil has attained this rank, they are given one of the following titles: Baronet, Baronetess, Knight, or Dame.

Low-Class Devils

The weakest class who are usually reincarnated Devils or commoners. They are usually part of a High-Class Devil's peerage or serve one of the clans. Low-Class Devils can promote themselves to higher rankings depending on their performance.

There are three different ways to raise one's ranking:

Ways Information

1. Contracting Doing Devil jobs by granting the client's wish. This includes having a high number of contracts completed with high-quality rewards. A Devil's contracts will garner points over time, but it is a gradual process unless the human customer is someone with great power and influence. This is considered to be the slowest method. A promotion through contracts are seen as more of a tradition.

2. Military Accomplishments Obtaining great achievement in times of crisis or situations. This includes showing exceptional ability or skill in combat. By defeating high-ranked enemies of the Devils, such as leaders of the Angels or Fallen Angels, a Devil can be rewarded. This is the fastest method, However, this route is unlikely in the current stalemate without a full-scale war.

3. Rating Game The last method is by doing well in Rating Games. This includes earning high points, public esteem, and opinion in official Rating Games. This is the modern path of ascent in Devil society, as it was designed to promote and train new powerful Devils. The Rating Game allows reincarnated Devils to hone and show off their skill and abilities against others in a controlled non-lethal environment. Performing well in the Rating Game raises reputation and leads to promotion. Some of the Top Rankers in the Rating Games have all reached Ultimate-Class, With the 7th ranker being the highest-ranked reincarnated Devil. This is by far the best method to raise one's own ranking.

Once a Low-Class Devil has earned the right to raise their ranking, they must first be tested before actually gaining the position. Not everyone succeeds in these tests, but they can try as many times as they choose, as the permission does not normally expire. The Middle-Class promotion test has three parts that are modeled after the tests in the Human world since a majority of the Devils who taking the promotion tests are reincarnated Devils (former humans). The first part is a written report that addresses the theme of aim and ambitions. The second part is a written test involving the history and government of the Underworld. The third is a practical where an individual faces off against another participant from the test in a one-on-one fight. During this battle, Pawns are given special permission that allows them to promote themselves as if they were in enemy territory.

High-Class Devils and above are allowed to have their own "peerage" which consists of members who represent each piece in a game of Chess while for reincarnated Devils that have reached Ultimate-Class, they will receive the right to choose a part of the Underworld as their territory. There is actually no conflict when a Low-Class Devil starts his own group while still being a part of another peerage after becoming High-Class. When a Devil reaches High-Class, they receive a set of Evil Pieces to start their own group. However, even after going independent, Devils are still obliged to fight as underlings whenever their master has a Rating Game.

High-Class Devil Promotion Ceremony

As seen with Issei, when a Devil goes to their High-Class promotion ceremony at the ceremonial hall, that Devil and those with them are escorted in limousines under strict guard. Several security cars surround the limousines meaning the Devil becoming a High-Class Devil is treated like a VIP. At the ceremony itself, the Devil getting promoted stands in front of an altar (a reincarnated devil stands with their master) and the Satan in charge reads what is written on their certificate which states the reasons for their promotion. The Satan proclaims them as a High-Class Devil and they kneel down on one knee to receive their certificate with words of acceptance. They display their certificate to the audience to which they applaud. Next comes the crowning ritual. For a reincarnated Devil, they face their master at the altar, get down on one knee, and their master places a crown upon their head with another round of applause meaning the ritual is complete.

For the final part, the Satan stands on the altar once again summoning a stone monument that shines in black which floats in the air. The monument is made from the same material as the Evil Pieces. The Devil getting promoted envelopes their hand in their aura and touches the monument. Their heart instantly makes a large beat and the monument shines crimson, showing their handprint for a moment and then the monument returns to normal. Their registration as a King is complete and they are handed a small box containing their 15 Evil Pieces for making their own peerage. As such, the ritual is done with the most crucial part of the ceremony. What comes after this is the words of congratulation from the guest which is read by the host of the ceremony and after the newly promoted High-Class Devil leaves the ceremonial hall, the ceremony is over.

Factions

Four Great Satans

The Four Great Satans (四大魔王, Yondai Maō) are the four rulers who control the Underworld. The original Satans were dominating tyrants who desired world domination, thus the reason for involving Devils in the Great War against the God of the Bible, Angels and Fallen Angel. The current Satans are not the actual ones but were chosen to replace the original Satans who died in the Great War, and each was named after the four original Satans: Lucifer, Beelzebub, Leviathan, and Asmodeus. Therefore the names "Lucifer" and "Beelzebub" are not personal names, but are more like managerial positions.

Satan Clans

The Satan Clans are Devil royal families whom are biological descendants of the original Satans. Due to most members's tyrannical arrogance in their royal lineage which caused them to scorn and oppressed all other Devils even pure blooded High Class Devil nobles of the 72 Pillars and Extra Demons, disregarding them as not true Devils along with their intention to force them into restarting the Great War, most members of the Satan Clans were exterminated by the Anti-Satan Faction in the Devil Civil War, while some surviving members form the Old Satan Faction in hopes of overthrowing the current Devil government.

72 Pillars

The 72 Pillars (72柱, Nanajūni Hashira, referring to the 72 demons of the Ars Goetia) are a list of 72 Devil noble families who descended from the first generation of High Class Devils created by the Original Lucifer out of his wife Lilith such as Zekram Bael and Runeas Gremory. Each clan possessing dozens of armies serving under them. After the Great War, however, every clan lost a majority of their armies and 40 clans from the 72 Pillars even faced extinction, with only 32 clans remaining (in reality, there are more than 32 houses that are still active but have lost some of their statuses in the 72 Pillars due to having mixed heritage).

Extra Demons

Extra Demons (番外の悪魔エキストラ・デーモン, Ekisutora Dēmon) are the houses of top-class Devils who are not a part of the 72 Pillars. Currently, most of the Extra Demons have secluded themselves from the current Devil society, not wanting to involve themselves with the government. Devils from the Extra Demons who involve themselves with the current Devil Government will have to break all ties with their households such as with the case of Kuisha Abaddon, Bedeze Abaddon (the 3rd ranking champion in the Rating Games) and Roygun Belphegor (the 2nd ranking champion in the Rating Games).

The only known houses are the House of Lucifuge (where Grayfia and Euclid comes from), the House of Abaddon (where Kuisha and Bedeze comes from), the House of Belphegor (where Roygun comes from) and the House of Nebiros. Mephisto Pheles is the only Extra Demon that doesn't have a clan. Gremory seal-disclaimer A majority of the Extra Demons serve under one of original Satans, such as the House of Lucifuge, Satanachia, Agaliarept, Fleurety, Sargatanas, and Nebiros serving the Satan, Lucifer. Rudiger Rosenkreutz is revealed to be a Bishop from the House of Mammon.

Lilith's Children

Lilith's Children (リリスの子供たちリリス・チルドレン, Ririsu Chirudoren), also known as Unknown Devils, refers to the group of Artificial Devils created by the Greek God of the Dead; Hades, using the body of the mother of all Devils; Lilith and the knowledge of the Book of Lucifer, which contains the technique that the First Lucifer used to create the 72 Pillars. They serve as Hades' shock troops against his war on Team DxD and the Three Factions. The only named artificial devils are Balberith, Verrine, Gressil and Sonneillon.

The Angels

The Angels (天使 Tenshi) are one of the Three Factions in High School DxD, alongside the Devils and Fallen Angels. There are two major types of Angels in the story: the Pure Angels (純粋な天使, Junsuina Tenshi), and Reincarnated Angels (転生天使, Tensei Tenshi).

Originating from Heaven, the Angels are powerful beings who serve the Biblical God, and have the powers to inflict pain upon Devils/demons and by extension the Fallen Angels, due to their light-based powers. After the death of the God of the Bible in the Great War of the Three Factions, the Angels were incapable of increasing their numbers normally until the creation of the Brave Saint system which allows humans to be reincarnated into Angels. Their power is derived from the faith of God's believers, so it was important for them to conceal God's death. During the peace conference of the Three Factions, Michael explained that the reason for Asia and Xenovia's excommunication from the Church was because of the possibility of them affecting humanity's faith in God which was necessary for the Angels' survival.

Unlike Devils and Fallen Angels, Angels need to purify themselves when making love and both the Angel and partner must undergo a lengthy purification ritual (it takes several hours). They must also need to do it inside a specially crafted barrier and they both must not harbor any kind of possessive feelings while doing it, rather it must be done out of pure love.

There were also traitors in the Heavens who were giving out information to the Khaos Brigade. Ironically, these top-class Angels were able to do so without falling due to a loophole in Heaven's system. These Angels, however, became Fallen Angels after leaving Heaven and escaping to the Khaos Brigade.

Angels have jobs within the Church. These include "Angel Counselling" where they hear the confessions of people who have sinned and forgive them for their sins, naming children at the request of their parents, and regular work from file management to cooking classes and reception.

Appearance

Angels look similar to humans except with them having white feathered wings and a halo positioned directly above their head; the only exception being the Archangel Michael who has golden wings and later Dulio. Also, their power is denoted by the number of wings they have (Irina, for example, initially only had one pair of wings but gained another pair in Volume 17 for her increase in strength as well as Dulio upon activating his Balance Breaker, his power increased to the point where he gained twelve golden wings, similar to Michael).

They are often seen in white-colored clothing, mostly priest attire.

Abilities

All Angels can utilize Light Power that can cause severe damage to Devils and Fallen Angels, which can produce numerous light-based weapons such as spears, arrows, swords, a whip of light, balls of light and light rings, that can be used to grab hold of or restrain a foe with the size/power of a Fenrir pup. Spears appear to be the most commonly used weapons for Angels. Their light-based powers can also be used in different ways, but it is dependent on the individual angels, such as a light barrier or use light to enhanced physical attacks such as punches and kicks. A certain number of powerful high ranking Angels also has special holy abilities unique to themselves, like Uriel's ability to control Holy Fire and Baraqiel's power of Holy Lightning.

Angels also have the ability of flight through their feathered wings. Like Devils and Fallen Angels, their wings are capable of retracting into their backs as if they've disappeared completely.

Like Devils, all Angels have a unique ability which allows them to communicate with different people from around the world without the language barriers. All Angels also have increased physical abilities, such as superhuman strength, endurance, and speed.

After the peace treaty between the Three Factions, the Brave Saints system was created by the Seraphs using the technologies of the Devils and Fallen Angels, to increase their lost numbers by reincarnating humans into Angels. Reincarnated Angels can also use their traits better when acting as a group.

Angels, like other factions, have their own system of magic and spells.

Types of Angels

There are two major variations of Angels (including one sub-variant) in the story:

Pure Angels (純粋な天使, Junsuina Tenshi); who are the original Angels created by the God of the Bible and include powerful Angels like the Four Great Seraphs.

Seraph (熾天使セラフ, Serafu, plural Seraphim), also known as Burning Angels, are Angels who are guardians of the Throne of Heaven. They are the ones maintaining the system used by the God in the Bible following His death. The members of the Seraphs are the Archangel Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, and Uriel, who was titled the "Four Great Seraphs". The significance of this title, however, is unknown at present but are known to represent the Kings of respective cards: Michael is Spades ♠, Gabriel is Heart ♥, Raphael is Club ♣, Uriel is Diamond ♦. In Volume 6, it is revealed that there are other Seraphs, numbering ten in total, but were not named. The Seraphs that have appeared so far in the series are Michael, Gabriel, Uriel, and Raphael. One of the Ten Seraphs, Metatron, appeared in a short story titled Nekomata☆Ninja-Scroll, evidently, living as a ninja in the human world due to his fascination with the craze. Metatron evidently showed the Seraphs all have twelve wings.

Archangel (大天使, Dai Tenshi) is the highest ranked Angel that was closest to the God of the Bible and His favored creation. The only known Archangel is Michael, the former leader of the Angels and Seraphs.

Reincarnated Angels (転生天使, Tensei Tenshi); which are created by using Brave Saints to reincarnate Humans and other species into Angels.

Miracle Children (奇跡の子, Kiseki no Ko): which are half Angels, born from a union of a Angel and a member of another race. Miracle Children are born as the offspring of a Angel, who became physically intimate with a member of another race without falling. Due to the Angels vow of purity and chastity, only certain people could become physically intimate with a Angel. To start the procedure of making love, a barrier has to be placed on the location where the act will occur, as the Angel and their mate also have to pray the night before engaging in the act to purify your body. During the intercourse, the Angel and their mate aren't allowed to have lecherous thoughts while engaging in the act, as they must remember the teachings at all times and have the mind of a Saint, as the intercourse must be initiated out of pure love. With the creation of the Interdimensional Room, Angels are allowed to breed normally without the need for lenghty praying ritual and suppresing impure feelings and desires while also prevent them from becoming Fallen Angels, as the room is designed to prevent angels from falling when engaging in sexual intercourse.

Population

The population of Angels consisted of the Four Great Seraphs, Ten Seraphs and various pure Angels who were created by the God of the Bible. During to the Great War, many Angels were killed along with the God of the Bible, thus preventing any more Pure Angels from being created as only the God of the Bible could create Pure Angels with his power.

While Angels are capable of breeding with each other or other species, due to their vow of purity and chastity, if they give in to their desires, they will turn into Fallen Angels. While there is the possibility of Angels conceiving children, it is noted to be an extremely difficult procedure and only certain individuals can become intimate with Angels.

After the Three Factions singed the Kuoh Treaty, the engineers of Heaven were capable of creating the Brave Saints cards with the help of Grigori technology and the unique attribute crystals found in Agreas which are used to create Evil Pieces. Each of the Seraphs is given a set of Brave Saints cards in order to reincarnate other species into Angels, choosing believers of strong faith.

Due the Ace of Michael's, Irina Shidou's desire to become physically intimate with Issei Hyoudou, the engineers of Heaven developed the Interdimensional Room, which allows a Angel to become physically intimate and engage in sex without falling. After bestowing the original room to Irina, it is noted that Angels are capable of reproducing without falling due to the rooms effects. Angels, like Devils have exceptionally long lifespans and cannot easily conceive children with other supernatural species.

Fallen Angels

The Fallen Angels (堕天使, Datenshi) are one of the Three Factions in High School DxD, alongside the Angels and Devils.

Summary

Fallen Angels are Angels that have fallen from the grace of God, due to having "impure thoughts" that divert them from the teachings of the God in the Bible. The leaders of Grigori were tempted by human women and had fallen after having sex with them.

Despite being cast out of Heaven, Fallen Angels and their subordinates have been known to occupy churches and use them as bases. However, they go out of their way to destroy all of the religious icons in these churches in the process out of spite for their former leader.

Currently, the Fallen Angels have the smallest population among the Three Factions.

Appearance

Fallen Angels have an appearance similar to their Angel counterparts with their wings; however, their wings are colored black as opposed to the Angels' white wings. Also, because they have been cast out of Heaven by God, they also lack the halos above their heads. They are also often seen wearing dark-colored clothes, mainly pertaining to the colors black and violet.

Like their Angel counterparts, the power of a Fallen Angel also contribute to how many wings they have. For example, Azazel, the former leader of the Fallen Angels, has six pairs of wings (twelve altogether) which justify his power. This extends to half-Fallen Angels as Akeno gained more fallen angel wings as her power increased. The blackness of the wings of each Fallen Angel is also different. Azazel, for example, has jet-black wings with feathers that have the color of everlasting darkness.

Female Fallen Angels possess seductive bodies in order to seduce men. This trait carries over to half-Fallen Angels, with Akeno's body considered particularly seductive.

Abilities

Although they have been cast out from Heaven, Fallen Angels retain the ability to use Holy Power and create Light Weapons. This type of weaponry is extremely harmful and poisonous to Devils, as it is shown many times when Issei is wounded by Dohnaseek and Raynare. Fallen Angels have the ability of flight via their feathered wings, their wings have also been shown to retract into their backs as if they've completely disappeared. The Fallen Angels can use the feathers of their wings as projectiles to pierce their opponents, with the feathers being as hard as steel and are also capable of using their wings for both offense and defense.

Like Devils and Angels, Fallen Angels have a unique ability which allows them to communicate with different people from around the world without the language barriers. All Fallen Angels also have increased physical abilities, such as superhuman strength, endurance, and speed. One of their known weaknesses is that they receive damage like devils do if they pray to God.

Unlike Angels and Devils, who require the use of a respective Brave Saints or Evil Pieces to replenish their numbers, Fallen Angels can replenish their number of "pure" Angels simply by tempting the remaining pure Angels in Heaven to join them. It is unknown if it works in the opposite direction, where the Fallen Angels can redeem themselves via selfless and righteous acts to rejoin Heaven. They can also increase their numbers through childbirth, as with the case of Baraqiel with Akeno through Akeno's mother.

Fallen Angels, like other factions, have their own system of magic and spells. This includes a method to wipe the memories of large numbers of people, as shown when all of Issei's friends forgot about Yuuma, or when Azazel wiped the memories of the girls of Kuoh Academy.

Magic Circle

Variant

Leaders

Leaders (幹部, Kanbu) are a group of executive fallen angels from Grigori who are noted for their power. They have a unique characteristic of having multiple fallen angel wings, as they possess at least 5 pairs of fallen angels wings. The Leaders are noted to be very powerful and proficient in using their light weapon abilities as they can shoot out multiple light weapons without fatigue.

Population

The Fallen Angel population consists of Angels who fell after being tempted by desires and having sex with humans, rebelling against the Biblical God, and stealing the knowledge of Heaven. Fallen Angels are capable of interbreeding among themselves and even other species: Akeno, being the result of Baraqiel, and his human wife, Shuri; and Shemhazai's unnamed child, who he had with his devil wife.

During the Great War, similar to the Devils and Angels, the Fallen Angels lost portion of their numbers, having the smallest numbers in the Three Factions. During the Evil Dragon War, Azazel revealed that Grigori once again lost portions of their numbers against Trihexa. Due to losing more of its top-brass members and the decreasing rate of natural-born Fallen Angels, Azazel says that the leaders of the Grigori didn't have any intention of trying to continue the existence of the Fallen Angels as a race, as they opted not to make a reincarnation system like the Evil Pieces and Brave Saints, despite being capable of doing so as Azazel stated that the Fallen Angels can end with him and the Grigori, though they would accept any angel who fell.

Factions

Grigori

Grigori (グリゴリ, Gurigori) is an organization created by Azazel and the Fallen Angels who fell with him from the Fifth Heaven[2]; they were also called "The Watchers of the Children of God" (in other words, the "Sacred Gear" possessors), and arguably represents the Fallen Angel "mainstream." The members of Grigori include exiled Church members (Valper Galilei and Freed Sellzen, for example) and Sacred Gear wielders that Azazel and the other members kept as their respected members; for example of these members are Tobio and Vali (Vali would later defect). Grigori invites or takes in possessors of Sacred Gears that have no family and are left alone, looking after these Sacred Gear possessors while training them on how to use their powers, turning them into experienced possessors to remain within the organization.

During the Great War, Grigori was the first to retreat after losing most of their forces, except for their leaders. Ever since then, Azazel has become more peaceful and tries to avoid battles as much as possible. However, there were still small fights between the Fallen Angels and other factions which did not reach Azazel's knowledge. An example was when Raynare and a group of Fallen Angels acted behind Azazel's back and performed a ritual to steal Asia Argento's Twilight Healing.

During the Demonic Beast Riot, Azazel also reveals that Grigori lost more of its members to the Khaos Brigade after a group of top-class Fallen Angels had been discovered to be giving out information to them. After the Riot, Azazel had to step down from his position as Governor for associating with the Khaos Brigade leader Ophis, with Baraqiel succeeding him.

Members of the Grigori became members of Team Lightning for the Azazel Cup under the leadership of Baraqiel.

Dragons

Dragons (ドラゴン, Doragon) are one of the most powerful and prominent creatures in High School DxD.

Summary

Dragons are powerful supernatural beings, considered the strongest aside from the Gods themselves, admired, respected, and feared no matter the era. Among the supernatural, Dragons, as an entire race, didn't side with anyone from the Three Factions during the Great War, different from Fairies, Spirits, European Monsters, Asian Monsters, and Humans. However, in the end, some Dragons did end up joining the Three Factions, among the Underworld, consisting of Devils and Fallen Angels. In certain cultures and different parts of the world, Dragons are worshiped as Gods.

Dragons are said to be creatures born from a large mass of power, who act based on their desires, acting freely and selfishly, while having a high amount of intelligence. Azazel even theorized that the reason that Dragons are so powerful is because their pure thoughts compel them to devote themselves towards their goals, for the Evil Dragons, it would be battle and carnage, even if it meant their bodies would be annihilated too. Crom Cruach stated that Dragons are meant to live according to their will. All Dragons have pride in themselves, declaring their titles as a formal greeting or in response to accepting a challenge to a duel between Dragons or heroes.

There have been those who were created by powerful beings, such as Midgardsormr and his clones, who were created by the Evil God, Loki. And then Aži Dahāka, Aži Dahāka II, Ddraig II, and Albion II, who were all creations of the Evil God, Angra Mainyu. Aside from that, Dragons can be mass-produced and beings can be turned into dragons by using powerful items, such as the Longinus, Sephiroth Graal, and God of the Bible, who'd cursed Samael into a half-Fallen Angel, half-Dragon.

Dragons love hoarding treasures as seen with both the Dragon Kings, Tiamat, and Fafnir; the former had hoards of treasures, but Ddraig borrowed some of them and lost them to Human thieves after being sealed, scattering them all across the Human World. Losing a Dragon's treasure, no matter how small would result in them relentlessly pursuing whoever lost them, as shown when Tiamat hunted down Ddraig and his possessors for centuries, to make them pay for losing her treasures. Fafnir has a treasure trove located in the Dragon Range, ranging from famous items, and weapons, as well as Asia Argento's lingerie, sometimes wanting something from his contractor and summoning them into battle using a summoning portal from his mouth.

Male Dragons take a liking to females of other races while hating other males. Dragons are also known to be gluttons who enjoy eating delicious food, whether they are Evil Dragons like Nidhogg and Crom Cruach, or Dragon Gods like Lilith and Ophis,

No matter what, it is a mistake to anger even a Low-Class Dragon, more so one of the Heavenly Dragons or the Dragon Kings. This is because of their Outrage, as shown when the Dragon King Fafnir wielded power equal to or greater than the Super Devil Rizevim Livan Lucifer, then fought Crom Cruach, the strongest Evil Dragon, who surpassed the Heavenly Dragons. The simplest, most efficient method of calming down an enraged Dragon (or someone in possession of one via a Sacred Gear) is to sing them a specific song.

In the present, almost all powerful and legendary Dragons are either sealed inside of the Sacred Gears, such as Ddraig, Albion, and Vritra; dormant, missing, or dead. As shown by Ddraig, they revert back to an infantile mentality if they do not heal properly as a result of using up too much of their powers.

There is a race of Dragons who require a special fruit, called the Dragon Apple, to survive. All of the Dragon Apples on Earth have been destroyed due to climate changes, with the ones growing in the Underworld all existing within Tannin's territory.[3] He became a Devil to obtain this territory for their sake.

There is an obscure mountain known as the Dragon Range only accessible to Dragons via the Dragon Gate. It allows for harsh training and contains one of Fafnir's treasure vaults.

Appearance

Dragons are creatures with reptilian traits. There are two physical types of Dragons: Western Dragons and Eastern Dragons.

The Western Dragons (西洋のドラゴン, Seiyō no Doragon) are a lizard-like creature that stands on four legs, leathery or bat-like wings growing from their backs, and a long, muscular tail.

The Eastern Dragons (東洋のドラゴン, Tōyō no Doragon) are typically portrayed as serpentine creatures that have long, slim bodies with four legs, and without wings.

Various Dragons come in different colors, from red (Flame Dragon or Ddraig) to white (Albion) to blue (Tiamat or Sprite Dragon). Most Evil Dragons have black scales. However, just like most other supernatural beings, Dragons can assume human form to appear normal, and most of them prefer to remain in their human form. Ophis is completely humanoid, but can change both gender and physical age.[4]

Classes

The Dragons are divided into many different classes. There are the normal Dragons, the Dragon Kings which are above the normal Dragons, the Heavenly Dragons which are above the Dragon Kings, and the Dragon God, the highest class of Dragons.

Dragon God

The Dragon God (龍神, Ryūjin) is a class that belongs to Great Red and Ophis, the Ouroboros Dragon and founder of the Khaos Brigade, and Lilith, the spawn of Ophis. Great Red is also considered one of the Dragon Gods, in addition to being a True Dragon.

Heavenly Dragons

The Two Heavenly Dragons, Ddraig and Albion.

The Two Heavenly Dragons (二天龍, Nitenryū) are Dragons with powers that can kill both Gods and Satans, and are considered to be one of the highest class of Dragons, superior to Dragon Kings, but inferior to Dragon Gods. The two Heavenly Dragons are the Red Dragon Emperor (赤龍帝, Sekiryūtei), Ddraig, and the White Dragon Emperor (白龍皇, Hakuryūkō), Albion. Both were born in England with unique abilities that could destroy virtually any foe aside from each other and the Dragon Gods, the two developed newer ones as they began fighting each other.

One of their fights interrupted the Great War between Angels, Devils, and Fallen Angels, forcing the Three Factions to form a temporary truce against them. The Dragons fought back in anger over their own interrupted fight, but ultimately had their bodies destroyed and their souls sealed into two Sacred Gears: Boosted Gear and Divine Dividing. Most of their abilities were also sealed off in the process. Their hosts are given the same titles as the Dragons themselves, and are destined to continue the fight.

Low-level Dragons: A Dragon class that belongs to normal Dragons. The only Dragon that has been revealed that belongs to this class is the Earth Dragon.

The dinosaur that appeared in the short story A Tokusatsu Devil is an example of an Earth Dragon.

Evil Dragons

Another class of Dragon that is first introduced in Volume 14.

The Evil Dragons (邪龍, Jaryū) are a group of Dragons who are known for their particular vicious temperament, as the most vicious and brutal among all Dragons. Most of them are dangerous battle maniacs who want to destroy everything including themselves, causing them to be referred to as "Broken Dragons". Even the Heavenly Dragons, who surpassed the strongest three Evil Dragons in the past, would rather not get involved with them. As such, in the past, evil and malevolent Gods were among the few beings who were able to control Evil Dragons.[6]

Outside of their vicious nature, Evil Dragons, more so legendary ones, are noted to be incredibly powerful, wielding power that exceeds the Five Great Dragon Kings. The three strongest Evil Dragons, Crom Cruach, Aži Dahāka, and Apophis, were able to achieve power comparable to the Heavenly Dragons; however, the strongest one, Crom Cruach gained power that surpassed Ddraig and Albion from training.

Evil Dragons are difficult to handle, as a result of it being possible for them to revive themselves as long as a part of their soul remains; however, this often takes a large amount of time. It was most shown in Vritra, who is counted as being a Dragon King and Evil Dragon, who had regained consciousness despite his soul being split into four pieces, then sealed in four different Sacred Gears: the Vritra's Sacred Gears.

In the past, most legendary Evil Dragons were annihilated, aside from Crom Cruach, who remained active in the Human World and Underworld as a means of training himself. At some point, the Evil Dragons were revived, but then killed and sealed once again, ranging from Grendel, Ladon, and Niðhöggr, aside from Yamata no Orochi; then after the Evil Dragon War, those who defected from Qlippoth Aži Dahāka, and Apophis were killed.

The Dragons of this class include:

Technically, Vritra is considered to be in this category as well, but he pales in comparison to their iniquity. Among the Evil Dragons, the ones that were the most brutal and stood at the top were:

Name Title

Crom Cruach Crescent Circle Dragon

Aži Dahāka Diabolism Thousand Dragon

Apophis Eclipse Dragon

All the currently known famous Evil Dragons were revived by Qlippoth of the Khaos Brigade for the Evil Dragon War. Out of the seven named Evil Dragons, Crom Cruach defected from Qlippoth, Aži Dahāka and Apophis betrayed Rizevim, Grendel, Ladon and Niðhöggr were all sealed after their defeat, while Yamata no Orochi, Apophis and Aži Dahāka were the only Evil Dragons who died in battle.

In Volume 16, Rizevim reveals that with the help of the Sephiroth Graal, he could mass-produce Evil Dragons, using it on the Vampires that already modified themselves using the Holy Grail. The mass-produced Evil Dragons are said to have at least the strength above a Mid-class Devil. Four of these dragons defected and formed a contract with Asia Argento after seeing Fafnir's impromptu cooking show in Volume 17.

Asia named the four:

Elemental Dragons

In Volume Dx.3, it is revealed there are Elemental Dragons named after the elements they can create and control:

Fire Dragons which can breathe fire.

Water Dragons which manipulate ice and water.

Wind Dragons which manipulate wind.

Lightning Dragons which manipulate lightning.

Ice Dragons which manipulate ice.

Other Dragons

There are certain Dragons that don't belong to or have a proper class due to being either former Dragons or even a Dragon that doesn't have a proper classification. After being reincarnated into a Devil, Tannin has lost all rights to be called a Dragon King.

Samael, who appears to be a cross between a Fallen Angel and a Dragon, but has been sealed for a long time.

Issei Hyoudou was turned into a Humanoid Dragon, having gained a new body made up of Great Red's flesh and Ophis' power, being considered an almost miniature True Dragon, but similar to Tannin, he was reincarnated into a Devil once again.

Powers and Abilities

The abilities of a Dragon differ between classes, their specific races, and in some cases, the specific Dragon. All of them have demonstrated the power of flight and their own elemental Breath (either fire, ice, or lightning). Their Breath attacks, physical attacks, and Aura are noted to be their most basic forms of offense. Dragons often display high durability because of their tough scales.

There have also been Dragons who have developed their own abilities aside from their basic ones such as Ddraig (Power Multiplication and Transference), Albion (Power Division and Absorption), and Vritra (Power Absorption and Transference).

A frequently seen trait amongst the higher classes of Dragons is the ability to change their appearance to varying degrees. This trait ranges from changing their size (Tannin and his son Bova Tannin) to completely changing their outward appearance (Yu-Long, Crom Cruach, Ophis, Tiamat, Apophis, and Alivian).

Same as God and Buddha, Dragons have an abundant lifespan, measuring in the millennium, some being almost ageless, however, most Dragons aren't shown as aging after maturing or dying unless they're killed. Dragons (and by extension Dragon Sacred Gear possessors) are immune to poisonous mist created from Youjutsu, which is said to be able to work on even higher ranking Devils and Youkai.

Outrage: Dragons seem to have the ability to enter an empowered state of sorts when they are angered. In this state, physical abilities increase significantly. When Fafnir entered this state, his power was enough that he was able to knock Lilith to the side and bite off one of Rizevim Livan Lucifer's arms. In the Outrage state, dragons will relentlessly pursue their enemies. Ddraig and Albion also entered Outrage mode back in the Great War and lashed out at the leaders of the Three Factions for interrupting their fight.

Magic: Though not many, some Dragons have the ability and also expertise in using various types and classes of Magic and spells, and often to far more potent degree than any other supernatural beings, higher classes of Dragons can use high classes of magic, and even forbidden spells. Some examples of these dragons are Aži Dahaka; who both controls and possesses one thousand magic skills, Fafnir; which he uses his skills in Magic to willfully open the Dragon gate and bestowed curses, and Apophis; who use his Magic to contain the Holy Grail through his own dimension.

Magic Resistance: The scales of Dragons are stated to be resistant to magic.

Curse: Though not all Dragons can use Curses, there are several higher ranking and powerful Dragons that can create and bestow Curses. In particular, those who can use forbidden Magics and spells, such as Fafnir who can use his spiritual presence, Vritra's shadowy black flames that can curse both mortals and supernatural beings, and Azi Dahaka's thousand skills of ancient and forbidden Magic skills.

Poison: Some Dragons can utilize poison, potent enough to even destroy the souls of their victims. Samael's poison is so dangerous, particularly to other Dragons, that it is heavily sealed. The Yamata no Orochi is also poisonous, but it is inferior to Samael and can be cured by Heaven's antidote. Albion's original ability is a poison capable of destroying virtually all organic matter.

Dragon Gate

The Dragon Gate (龍門ドラゴン・ゲート, Doragon Gēto) is a magic circle exclusive to the Dragons. The Dragon Gate allows them to summon another Dragon. While the Dragon Gate insignia can be drawn by someone else, it will only respond when there is a Dragon nearby. It requires 3 or more powerful Dragons to use to forcibly summon another Dragon. A Dragon Gate is required for the process of reaching the Dragon Range.

The Dragon Gate insignia is positioned after the Five Dragon Kings, Tannin, the Two Heavenly Dragons, and Grendel. Each of which is represented on the magic circle by a different color:

Name Color

Ddraig Red

Albion White

Tannin Purple

Tiamat Blue

Yu-Long Green

Vritra Black

Midgardsormr Grey

Fafnir Gold

Grendel Dark Green

Despite so, there appear to be other methods to use the Dragon Gate; in Volume 9, the Hero Faction intended to use a brainwashed Yasaka and the spiritual energy from Kyoto to replace the use of the Dragons to open the Dragon Gate.

Individuals who specialize in summoning magic and have made a Dragon into their Familiar can learn to use Dragon Gate magic to summon the dragon which is Familiar.

Weaknesses

Despite dragons being considered to be masses of power, a common weakness for dragons, as well as people with Dragon-type Sacred Gears, are objects or individuals dubbed Dragon Slayers (龍殺しドラゴン・スレイヤー, Doragon Sureiyā). Swords imbued with Dragon-Slaying abilities such as the Holy Sword Ascalon and the Demonic Emperor Sword, Gram have shown the ability to easily cut and harm Dragons, as Issei Hyoudou was able to use Ascalon to easily damage and destroy Vali Lucifer's Scale Mail during their fight, and the Demonic Sword Emperor, Gram was used by the original Siegfried to kill the Dragon King Fafnir, though Fafnir was later revived by the Norse Gods. Dragons can gain resistance to these Dragon Slayers by either using the Sephiroth Graal; or by through intense training as seen with Crom Cruach who defended against an attack from Issei's Crimson Blaster + Ascalon.

So far, the most dangerous weapon against Dragons is the deadly poison of the Dragon Eater, Samael, which is the end result of God of the Bible's intense hatred for Snakes and Dragons, one that eliminates their body and soul. Not even the Dragon Gods, Ophis or Great Red, the former who lost one-fourth of her power, because of Cao Cao, can withstand the Dragon Eater, so it isn't "Infinite", but "Finite". I

The Dragons have a disease called the Dragon Flu, which can also be caught by the users of Dragon-type Sacred Gears. While afflicted, they lose the ability to breathe fire.

Sacred Gears

Sacred Gears (神器セイクリッド・ギア, Seikuriddo Gia), also known as God's Artifacts (神器, Jinki), are items with powerful abilities bestowed upon Humans by God of the Bible.

The Sacred Gears are one of the main points of interest in High School DxD.

Summary

The original God of the Bible created the Sacred Gears as part of his system to enact miracles on Earth. Yuuto Kiba has stated that certain individuals with Sacred Gears have grown to become very powerful and influential and that a large number of the people who've had their names etched into history, were most likely Sacred Gear possessors.

Sacred Gears varies from the common Twice Critical to the rare Sacred Gear Twilight Healing, with the only exception being the Longinus, which are all unique in their own way. There can be more than one Sacred Gear of the same type such as Blade Blacksmith. If a Sacred Gear is removed from the owner, they would die.

Humans or Human hybrids are the only species able to be born with Sacred Gears; however, they maintain them upon their reincarnation into Devils and Angels. The Fallen Angels from Grigori devised a ritual able to extract a Sacred Gear from the original owner and use it for themselves, this results in the death of the original owner.

It is possible for a person to own more than one Sacred Gear at the same time. However, this almost always happens because the individual comes to a second or even more Sacred Gear through irregular circumstances than through birth. As an example: Yuuto Kiba obtained his second Sacred Gear, Blade Blacksmith, from the Holy Element he received from Valper Galilei. Inside the Holy Element, was the soul of one of his former comrades who originally owned this Sacred Gear, allowing him to pass it on to Yuuto. Another case is Mitsuya Kanzaki, who isn't the original owner of Telos Karma nor Innovate Clear, but instead uses a special terminal to wield them. As there have not been any individuals in the series who have been born with multiple Sacred Gears, it may even be possible that people are always born with a single Sacred Gear.

It is unknown why supernatural beings are never born with them, but in Volume 12, Kiba theorized it could be due to Humans' desires to make them grow and evolve using various methods.

Sacred Gears can also affect their user negatively. There are wielders, often children, who end up dying because they have Sacred Gears; an example of such a circumstance would be the son of Rudiger Rosenkreutz, who had a Sacred Gear that was killing him.

Although it is a rare occurrence, there are those Sacred Gear users who were born with Balance Breaker without the need to achieve it; the problem with such a feat is that those who had this ability without needing to achieve it died or became unstable with their powers.

Another instance of users being harmed by the Sacred Gears themselves are those who access the ability known as Juggernaut Drive or Breakdown the Beast, only able to be achieved by Sacred Gears with creatures sealed inside. In exchange for unmatched power capable of rivaling or killing Gods and Satans, the user not only loses sanity, but also has their life force being used as a fuel source.

Abilities

Sacred Gears can have a variety of effects, such as Asia Argento's Twilight Healing granting near-instantaneous healing and Siegfried's Twice Critical doubling the power of the user. Yuuto's Sword Birth, for example, can create Demon Swords imbued with different attributes; examples include creating a sword that absorbs Holy Power, a sword that devours flame, and a sword that absorbs wind.

" — Desire. Sacred Gears are driven with the power of desire. And it also determines the power for it as well. Even though you are a Devil, your will to desire hasn't been lost. The stronger you desire, the stronger your Sacred Gear will respond to you. "

– Rias Gremory commenting on the abilities of Sacred Gears., Light Novel Volume 1

Sacred Gears can also adapt and evolve based on their wielder's thoughts, needs, and feelings, gaining abilities or qualities as time passes. This is stated to be the source of Balance Breaker, and suggested to be the source of the transformation into a Sub-Species.

Balance Breaker

Sacred Gears have an ultimate state of activation called the Balance Breaker (禁手バランス・ブレイカー, Baransu Bureikā), also known as the Forbidden Move (禁手, Kin-te), which is the most powerful manifestation of the Sacred Gear. Once reached, the Balance Breaker can be entered again far more easily than the first time.

An incomplete Balance Breaker can be reached by self-sacrifice on the part of the user, However, this sacrifice method does not count as a true activation of Balance Breaker.

Reaching the Balance Breaker can be triggered by the feelings of its possessor. Balance Breaker is said to be have been never intended, and that it was a flaw in the system created by God.

Juggernaut Drive

Juggernaut Drive (覇龍ジャガーノート・ドライヴ, Jagānōto Doraivu), also known as Dragon of Supremacy (覇龍, Haryū), is a special ability exclusive only to the Longinus Boosted Gear and Divine Dividing, and is considered to be a forbidden move.

The Juggernaut Drive temporarily removes the seal placed on the Heavenly Dragons, and for users that possess insufficient power the Juggernaut Drive will drain the user's life force which is needed to fuel the power, and drive them insane in the process as they cannot handle it.

For other Sacred Gears that have creatures sealed inside (such as the Regulus Nemea), their Juggernaut Drive goes under a different name called Breakdown the Beast (覇獣ブレイクダウン・ザ・ビースト, Bureikudaun za Bīsuto), also known as Beast of Supremacy (覇獣, Hajū).

The True Longinus has a similar power as well, which unleashes the 'Dying Will' of the God of the Bible, called Truth Idea, also known as Brightness of Supremacy (覇輝, Haki).

Types

Longinus

True Longinus: the first and most powerful Longinus.

Aside from the normal Sacred Gears, there are also the Longinus (神滅具ロンギヌス, Ronginusu). This class of Sacred Gears are also known as Tools that Destroy God (神滅具, Kamimetsugu).

Longinus are unique top-tier Sacred Gears, with each having multiple abilities compared to a normal Sacred Gear which only has one, and has the power to slay Gods.

There are 13 Longinus in total. However, Azazel has stated that there is the potential for more Sacred Gear to eventually evolve into Longinus, under the right conditions. After the Evil Dragon War, because of all the abnormalities within the Sacred Gear system and the Sacred Gears' ability for growth and change, 5 more Sacred Gears evolved into the Longinus class.

Longinus and Balance Breakers were never intended to be created, and are considered to be glitches in the system. The Longinus class of Sacred Gears are named for the first Sacred Gear to achieve this level of power: the True Longinus.

Artificial Sacred Gears

Down Fall Dragon Spear: the first Artificial Sacred Gear demonstrated.

It is possible for Artificial Sacred Gears to be created. Azazel, the leader of the Fallen Angels and Grigori, has conducted countless research studies on Sacred Gears. He eventually managed to create his own Sacred Gear, the Down Fall Dragon Spear, using the jewel that has Fafnir, one of the five Dragon Kings sealed inside it.

Artificial Sacred Gears, however, are inferior to the real ones. The Artificial Sacred Gears that Azazel researched and invented have several limits and side effects. For example, after some time has passed, an Artificial Sacred Gear can cause fatigue after their usage and may affect both the powers and abilities of the wielder if said wielder uses them for long periods of time.

Sub-Species

Sub-Species are Sacred Gears that have taken on a unique characteristic because of the thoughts and feelings of the wielder. They are more powerful than the normal form of the same Sacred Gear, and will sometimes gain a new ability as well.

Sometimes, both the Sacred Gear in its normal state, as well as the Balance Breaker will be a Sub-Species, like Siegfried's for example. Other times, however, only the Balance Breaker will be a Sub-Species, such as Yuuto's Blade Blacksmith. Even Longinus can gain a Sub-Species Balance Breaker like Cao Cao's True Longinus' Polar Night Longinus Chakravartin or Sairaorg Bael's Regulus Nemea's Regulus Rey Leather Rex.

Canis Lykaon, a Independent Avatar Sacred Gear.

Independent Avatar Sacred Gears are Sacred Gears that takes the form of a living-like creature that moves and acts of its own free will and instincts.

Among the embodiment-type Sacred Gears, these Sacred Gears themselves have its own individual consciousness and instinct, as the wielder can command the Sacred Gear from a distance. Because of its nature, it often mimics a living thing, and the embodied beast-type Sacred Gears can also eat like a living creature.

Independent Avatar Sacred Gears that manipulate energy can make a huge amount of energy take a humanoid form, using it as a puppet. The embodied Sacred Gear can be made to not be visible to ordinary Humans, and it can disappear or assume a smaller form that makes it easier to lead daily life than the true appearance.

The advantage is that the user can issue instructions from a safe place away from the battlefield, but at the same time, the risk that the user is vulnerable is greater than other Sacred Gears, so the user is often physically weak. In the case of the beast-type, if the Sacred Gear is attacked, damage may accumulate and it will be impossible for it to continue to fight, or for the beast to be sealed with a unique technique.

It is said that it is necessary to go into the depths of the Sacred Gear and the soul of the sealed creature in order to enhance the ability, but there is a danger that there is a chance that the user could be replaced by the consciousness within the Sacred Gear.

Divine Dividing, a Sealed/Contract Sacred Gear.

Sealed/Contract Sacred Gears is a generic term for Sacred Gears that have sealed a powerful creature inside them. These Sacred Gears are powerful, but if the creature inside the Sacred Gears isn't awake or if it's inactive, the user will only be able to use the minimal abilities of the Sacred Gear.

As the user of Sacred Gear increases their ability, they will not only get closer to the creature sealed within, they will also be able to benefit from their sharpening senses. But, on the other hand, as a consequence, they will be forced to pay something important to the sealed creature as a price for the sudden increase in power.

While originally the God of the Bible forcibly sealed the various powerful creatures in the Sacred Gears, newer Artificial Sacred Gears are created by the user having a powerful creature voluntarily sealing themselves into Sacred Gears under the condition of being payed a price for their service.

The Digital World, sometimes abbreviated as "Digi-World", is a world that exists parallel to Earth which has an intimate link to the data on Earth's telecommunications networks.

(Bible God and The Digital World Goddess are Siblings he ask his sister for some of her royal knights to help his world as he knows that his children are not strong enough as she Agrees to lend him her royal knights to be some of them sealed into sacred Gears Who Surpasses the Longinus Class and is Called the Heavenly Gear)

The Digital Is A Vast Multiverse plus beyond world with each Having is own unique system and they all are Created by the One True Digimon Goddess.

The Digital World featured in and its sequels and

This incarnation of the Digital World runs closely parallel to two other dimensions. One is a kaleidoscopic that possesses the power to transform beliefs into reality and the other is a "world of darkness", the grim and foreboding that has the ability to make the darker thoughts of others come to life. The Digital World is tied very closely to these two worlds and has absorbed a fraction of the former's power to bring thoughts to life; this power, combined with the data of the Digital World gave life to human thoughts, dreams, spiritual beliefs and myths in the form of Digimon. As explained by the reason why the Digital World has primitive and modern things is because of data deleted from the Real World. For example, if someone were to create a construction project but had to shut it down and delete it for good that data would be sent to the Digital World and the construction project would continue to build there.

In this universe Digimon life is cyclical. When a Digimon reaches the end of their life, the data which makes up their body disperses, only to reform at where it takes the form of a . The eggs are tended by and hatch out into baby Digimon so that the Digimon can live their lives over again, ad infinitum. There is some evidence to suggest that the data of evil Digimon does not reform at Primary Village, but rather is sent to the world of darkness.

Many locations in this Digital World are named after and . For example, the two continents of the Digital World are named and . is a key location in this Digital World, home to Primary Village and a form of nexus point for the world's data.

Several decades before the events of the series, and his came to the Digital World from beyond the , causing the Digital World to become warped in both space and time. To defeat this being the original five DigiDestined, including and were chosen and brought to the Digital World. Their Digimon were able to defeat the Dark Masters and fend off Apocalymon, becoming the in the process. The children's legend was famed throughout the Digital World with temples erected to their memories and a prophecy made stating that a new generation would arise when the Digital World would need them again, while their Digimon became the guardians of the four regions of the Digital World— in particular being the guardian of the Eastern region, where most of the Japanese DigiDestined's adventures take place. When Apocalymon eventually returned to the Digital World and his Dark Masters sealed away the Harmonious Ones, a new group of eight children were selected to become the new DigiDestined. They were transported to the Digital World, and as a result of their eventual victory over Apocalymon, the flow of time in the Digital World was re-synchronized with Earth time.

In Digimon Adventure 02, the dimensional balance of the Digital World came under threat when the human —possessed by the digital ghost of the evil —used agents such as the , , and to erect huge black obelisks known as around the Digital World, destabilizing all reality around it so he could gain access to it. The culmination of this plan resulted in the revelation of the Digital World's existence to the world at large; twenty-five years after these events all humans have a Digimon partner.

Digimon TamersMain article:

features a very different Digital World from that depicted in the first two Digimon series.

In the earliest stages of its existence, this incarnation of the Digital World was little more than a barren desert. As it grew alongside the Earth's communications network, however, it evolved and changed in dynamic ways, with more and more "layers" coming into existence over the top of the old ones. The lowest layer is the original desert plain, and the highest is the home of the four that rule the Digital World. In between lie many small miniverses, self-contained environments specially suited to the Digimon that live there, including (but not limited to) an area of clouds and clockwork; a warped, black-and-white town; an area of forests, lakes and rivers; and a world entirely composed of water.

Random packets of discarded data often roam the Digital World like and can be used to help repair and heal injured Digimon. Although the Digital World has both night and day, there is no transitional period between the two with darkness instantly sweeping across the world like a sheet. Visible in the sky no matter what plain it is viewed from is a pulsing globe of code and light, which represent the Earth—from it emanate data streams, vast columns of energy which reach into the Digital World and manipulate its digital matter, physical representations of acts performed on computers across the world. Should an individual be caught in a data stream they will be swept into it and deposited elsewhere on any of the Digital World's potential planes. Between Earth and the Digital World is a warped region of interdimensional space where reality is constantly in flux and defined only by the perceptions of individuals passing through it.

Digimon are, in fact not native to this Digital World, having been created by a group of teenage computer programmers in the late 1980s as an experiment into the development of artificial intelligence. When the project was shut down due to a lack of funds their primitive digital lifeforms accidentally found their way into the Digital World where they began to grow and evolve. One of the programmers, observed this and wrote an algorithm that allowed the Digimon to evolve beyond their original specifications and truly become individual lifeforms. Four Digimon in particular evolved into especially powerful forms and became the aforementioned Digimon Sovereigns. The Digital World does have native lifeforms, however, in the form of , the first form of artificial life who evolved from the matter of the Digital World itself before the Digimon. The DigiGnomes tend to the welfare of the Digital World and have mysterious powers that allow them to grant the wishes of others.

Another definitive feature of this Digital World is that any Digimon that dies is dead indefinitely. While in other Digital Worlds the death of a Digimon usually results in an infinite cycle of rebirth, Digimon in this Digital World are turned into data upon their deaths. In most cases this data is absorbed or "loaded" by other Digimon in order to power up or . However, this is contradictory to 's claim that Digimon return to where they came from after their death.

While conducting secret information-gathering on the network the Japanese organization became aware of the existence of the Digital World and Digimon which they dubbed Wild Ones, a term used in the Matrix Evolution theme song of Tamers as well as the opening theme of Frontier. Sometime after this Digimon began to appear in the real world, possibly due to Hypnos's inadvertent creation of a "weak spot" in the borders between the worlds with the use of the , a program designed to send errant Digimon back to Digital World or erase their data from the Real World. Digimon materialize on Earth through a process known as "Bio-Emerging," which begins when the barrier between the worlds is temporarily sundered to allow their passage through. The interaction of the two dimensions creates —small gray banks which allow Digimon to false proteins and convert themselves into physical forms after interacting with Earth's . These Digital Fields can appear in random locations instantaneously and often with little warning.

In addition to Hypnos and the original programmers the , initially the only humans to be aware of Digimon and the Digital World are a small group of children known as . These Tamers had been chosen by the DigiGnomes to become partners with Digimon and the creatures had used Shibumi's algorithm to bond human and Digimon together as partners via the . However, with the progression of the series and the increase in Digimon activity on Earth escalating from small skirmishes between the Tamers and single Digimon (with little to no damage to the Tamers' home city) to more devastating occurrences and eventually a massive, city-devastating battle with the and finally the full-scale invasion of the the existence of Digimon and the Digital World eventually became public knowledge.

Digimon FrontierMain article:

The Digital World in Frontier.

The Digital World of is divided into ten regions, each one representative of one of the world's ten elements—Flame, Light, Ice, Wind, Thunder, Earth, Wood, Water, Steel and Darkness. A massive network of train tracks crisscross the planet with a terminal in each region, allowing the train-like Digimon to ferry passengers from one region to the next. The most distinguishing feature of the Digital World is that everything exists in the form of —the "command code" for any data. Fractal code is usually hidden, but once it is either uncovered or has its key taken, it can be "digitized", which in turn "unlocks" the data of the item or individual in question, allowing it to be manipulated. In most cases, this leads to the data being absorbed—an action frequently perpetrated by the villains of the series. Conversely, if the Fractal Code is "rendered", it restores the data to its intended shape and form and "locks" it back into place. If a Digimon has their fractal code scanned but their data is not completely absorbed, then it will reconfigure itself into a , which then transports itself to the , where, after being tended by , it will hatch out into a new baby Digimon and start its life over again.

In ancient times, the Digital World was wracked by a massive war between the human- and beast-type Digimon. It was then that the angel Digimon, , appeared and brought the war to an end, leading to a period of peace. However, Lucemon eventually grew corrupted and became a tyrannical ruler, prompting the emergence of ten great who embodied the ten elements. After a mighty battle the Ten Legendary Warriors were able to defeat Lucemon and imprisoned him in the deep within the center of the Digital World.

This particular Digital World is also orbited by three Digital Moons—, , and . At least two of the Digital Moons are inhabited: the Blue Moon has the and the Yellow Moon contains the remnants of the .

Digital Monster X-Evolution

is a stand-alone movie independent of any anime series though it features the same Digital World depicted in and . This New Digital World (NEWデジタルワールド NEW Dejitaru Waarudo?) is a region of subspace created by the host computer when the original Digital World reached maximum capacity. It is divided into three which represent the Digital World's primitive, modern, and futuristic regions. Urd Terminal is an area of volcanoes and jungles inhabited by Ancient- and Dinosaur-type Digimon, Skuld Terminal is an area of cities and factories inhabited by Cyborg- and Machine-type Digimon and Verdandi Terminal is a temperate area inhabited by "normal" Digimon. Traveling between these layers effectively travels through time, and so the three layers together are known as the Chronicle Layer System. This setup allows Digimon to evolve without accumulating data in the host computer.

When the original Digital World reached maximum capacity, the began, setting in motion the destruction of the Digital World. Yggdrasill initiated , in which he would delete the excess data using the , and transfer a small amount of selected Digimon to the New Digital World. However, many Digimon developed an immunity to the virus known as the which not only allowed them to survive, but in fact increased their power. These X-Digimon traveled to the New Digital World on their own, and in response, Yggdrasill sent his servants the to destroy them and eradicate the abnormality. These events lead into the three materials which are set in this Digital World.

(short for Digital Accident Tactics Squad), a secret government organization is in charge of trying to avoid, prevent and clean up damage or attacks that Digimon cause in the Real World. Many of the Tamers in this series are DATS members. However, most Digimon in this Digital World hate humanity due to a genocide attempt perpetrated by ten years before the events of the series.

Digimon FusionMain article:

In Digimon Fusion, the Digital World's balance is maintained by the , which allows its user to rule over the Digital World and even alter its appearance. According to the Digital World researcher , this Digital World has existed much longer than the human world, and it was only recently that humans progressed to utilize digital technology. By that time, were battling to keep both their world and the humans' world from being conquered. However, the fight ended with the Digimon sealed into DigiMemories while the Code Crown's fragmentation causes the Digital World to be divided into multiple "Zones" which become under attack by the 's forces. But despite the actions of the Fusion Fighters and Blue Flare, Bagramon reforms the Code Crown and reformats the Digital World into seven land masses with his fortress in the center of it.

Throughout the Digital World's history, the evil Digimon instigates various disasters in order to prompt the Digital World's evolution through the accumulation of data and learning by conflict. One such disaster is a war between the Army of Light and the Army of Darkness when the King of Darkness, , attempts to destroy both the darkness and the light. Entering and Exiting the Digital World

Each anime and manga series has a different way for Digimon, humans and other beings to cross back and forth through the Real and Digital Worlds.

Digimon Adventure, Adventure 02, and Adventure tri.

In Digimon Adventure, transit to the Digital World was only possible via a preexisting gateway. The gateways were unlocked with the use of , pocket-sized devices that assisted in this task and helping a DigiDestined's partner Digimon Digivolve during battle. Other methods of going to the Digital World were possible but these were only rarely used in the series. The exact mechanics for how the portals open are unknown, but in Digimon Adventure 02 it was shown that they could be sealed so that nothing could cross them.

In the movie released prior to the start of the series there was no explanation for how a gateway between the Real and Digital Worlds opened, just that for a brief period Digimon could freely travel across.

Digimon Adventure 02 introduces Digi-Ports, programs built into computers which allowed access to the Digital World. The precise origins of the programs are unclear but they are activated by , the kind of Digivice used in this series. The original Digivice cannot be used to open Digi-Ports but if a Digi-Port program has already been opened the person wielding the original Digivice can still travel to the Digital World. Digi-Ports are capable of appearing on computers randomly. Before the existence of D-3s the original DigiDestined had to open the Digi-Port program and hope the gate was open, though it would open or close according to chance and was never open two days in a row according to . Originally the Digi-Ports only appeared on a school computer, but Izzy later realized that it could be opened with any computer. When the travelers come back through the Digi-Ports, they reappear through the exact same computer that they left through.

In the second Adventure movie, a Digimon named was able to infiltrate the wires comprising the . In the sequel movie a form of the same Digimon broke apart its data and materialized out of the Internet onto Earth.

At the end of Digimon Adventure tri. Izzy is working on a new gate to freely travel into the Digital World without the use of Digi-Ports or any Digivice.

Digimon Tamers

Humans still required some form of portal to access the Digital World in Digimon Tamers. Unlike previous series, gateways appear randomly and do not require a Digivice to traverse. The main portal used is found beneath the shed where was staying.

This series's random portals cannot transport humans back from Digital World, so instead the Monster Makers designed the Ark. It materialized in the Digital World as a vessel which the Tamers boarded to Bio-Emerge in the Real World. A final method of returning to the Real World was mentioned by Ryo to Rika that involved going to another world between the Digital and Real Worlds[] though it was never used or explained further in the series.

One man, , alias Shibumi had his projected into the Digital World when he entered into a following a . His body could be seen in the Digital World and he could speak but he was translucent and otherwise immaterial. How he could do this was never explained.

, while possessed by , is able to open a portal between the two worlds to bring in an army of Parasimon. is also able to travel through this portal from the Digital World to help in the battle. After uses his Crimson Light attack on the portal and destroys the Parasimon army, the portal closes.

Digimon Frontier

Traveling to and from the Digital World in Digimon Frontier is accomplished via the use of , Digimon who are sentient trains. The railways of this Digital World World traverse dimensions as well as landscapes; the located on is situated beneath 's . This station is known only to Digimon and the humans summoned there. However, the station is integrated into the main systems of Shibuya and accessible through the normal station's elevator, though at a level much deeper than the elevator would normally imply.

Digimon Frontier also has another case of a human consciousness being projected into the Digital World. is taken there when he falls down a flight of stairs. Though it appears he has a physical body in the Digital World, he does not sustain any damage when the other DigiDestined, who were physically transported, do, and his own fractal code is never open for taking until his actual consciousness is scanned by which causes him to flatline in the Human World.

During the final battle with the Legendary Warriors, is able to open a portal between the worlds through sheer force, emerging in the train station and then continuing on upwards to the surface. Following Lucemon's destruction, this portal begins to close and the Spirits throw the Legendary Warriors back through who then emerge on the surface of the human world in the elevator leading to the underground Trailmon station.

Digimon Data Squad

In Digimon Data Squad, Digimon travel between worlds using DigiGates. In this series, DigiGates do not appear randomly and cannot be opened with nor do they require a Digivice to access. DigiGates are created using a machine, a few of which belong to DATS, the Crier family and Kurata. DATS can also create Digital Gates using a machine to send Digitamas of rogue Digimon back to the Digital World. Human transfer to and from the Digital World is also possible and called a Digital Dive.

Digimon Fusion

In Digimon Fusion, each of the humans who enter the Digital World is pulled in by a specific powerful Digimon— for , and , for and , for , and for .

is sent to the Real World by Bagramon alongside Mikey, , Angie and Jeremy after being defeated by and . Bagramon later uses the power of the Sword of Storms and to penetrate the barrier between both worlds and invade Earth not long after.

Digimon Adventure:

In Digimon Adventure:, the DigiDestined are simply pulled into the Digital World through the when they are needed with being returned following the first defeat of the only to be pulled back in soon afterwards. is pulled into the Network and makes his way through it with and before eventually reaching the Digital World.

After being returned to the Real World by , the DigiDestined are suddenly pulled back when a light suddenly surrounds who is pulled in along with them. Despite being separated from their Digimon partners when they were returned to the Real World, when they come to the rescue of Tai, and , they have already been reunited, suggesting that the return wasn't an instantaneous transportation to their friends' sides.

When the DigiDestined return home following the destruction of Negamon and the end of the Great Catastrophe, works on creating a Digital Gate between the two worlds in order to make travel easier.

Digimon (Creature)

The word "Digimon" is typically invariable in the plural, though there are some cases where the term is pluralized as "Digimons". Digimon include almost all the creatures that reside within a parallel universe called the "Digital World." There are many different species of Digimon, as well as unconfirmed and new generations of Digimon yet to be revealed. The number of Digimon species continuously increases as the Digital World expands each year.

Characteristics

Digimon hatch from eggs called Digi-Eggs (デジタマ Degitama?). They age via a process called "Digivolution" which changes their appearance and increases their physical powers. Some Digimon act feral, like wild animals. Most, however, possess intelligence, speech, and personality traits like humans. It was mentioned that, if a partner Digimon were to be separated from their partner, then they would start to become weaker. An example of this is Yolei Inoue's partner, Poromon. When Yolei is away in Kyoto, Poromon begins to feel weaker each day. A Chance Encounter

Digimon consist of a DigiCore, a Wire-frame model, and their appearance on top of said model as a texture. As such, there is nothing else other than the wire-frame and texture — for example there is nothing under Angemon's mask other than wire-frame. However, if Angemon's mask were to be ever taken off, its DigiCore would replace its now removed mask with a newly created face.[2]

The first Digimon vpet introduces the Digimon life cycle: they develop in a similar fashion to real living organisms, but do not die under normal circumstances because they are made of reconfigurable data. Old Digimon and Digimon who receive fatal wounds dissolve into infinitesimal bits of data. The data then recomposes itself as a Digi-Egg, and the Digimon goes through its life cycle again. Digimon who are reincarnated in this way will sometimes retain some or all their memories of their previous lifespan.

In the Digimon Adventure universe, this cycle of reincarnation can be interrupted if the Digimon dies in the Real World,[please confirm] although the system-wide Reboot allowed such Digimon to finally be reincarnated. In addition, when a human dies in that universe, any Digimon partnered to it die as well.[please confirm] In addition, when a DigiDestined runs out of potential, their partner will cease to exist. This usually happens when they become an adult, though Menoa Bellucci lost hers when she was 14. Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna These Digimon can still come back however, as Taichi "Tai" Kamiya, Yamato "Matt" Ishida, and Sora Takenouchi lost their partners in 2010 Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna but regained them at some point before 2028. A Million Points of Light Human death causing their partner to die also applies to the Digimon Survive universe.

In the Digimon Tamers and Digimon Data Squad universes, the Digimon's data can be downloaded or absorbed by other Digimon, resulting in a permanent death.

In some media, such as Digimon Fusion, series directed by Hiroyuki Kakudo, and games produced by Kazumasa Habu, Digimon were not born as a result of humans creating computers, and instead always existed, living alongside humans, though in another dimension, becoming visible to humans once they created computers and digital technology. Digimon may have been manifested through magic or sorcery, through the ancient art of Onmyōdō, subjugating them as shikigami, yōkai, or demons, but is now accomplished digitally, making them Digital Monsters. In Digimon Tamers, Digimon were created by Humans. Chiaki J. Konaka stated in 2021 however that this wasn't actually the case and Digimon instead spawned from things such as human databases about ancient myths and Gods and the Humans forged the data claiming they created Digimon.

In Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory, one of Jimmy KEN's fans explains that he is able to change the size of his Digimon, a Varodurumon, manually.

Digivolution (進化 Shinka?, lit. "Evolution") is a term in the Digimon series. It is a process used by Digimon, monsters that inhabit a parallel universe called the Digital World that spawned from Earth's telecommunications network. Through Digivolution, a Digimon can develop into a more powerful being.

Digivolution is a legendary power, and the process by which a Digimon "ages" and grows up into larger and more powerful forms. Although the word "Digivolution" is a portmanteau for "Digital Evolution", Digivolution is in fact more similar to metamorphosis in that Digivolution changes a Digimon from one form to another, sometimes wildly disparate form, very quickly.

Digivolution for Digimon is similar to aging for humans—it is generally a one-way journey whereby a Digimon will grow into a new form as they age and gain battle experience and data. However, moving from one form to another becomes progressively more difficult. Therefore, very few Digimon will ever naturally digivolve into their final most powerful forms.

However, for the Digimon who are partnered with human allies such as Tamers or DigiDestined, Digivolution becomes far more flexible. Digimon who form bonds with a human are able to digivolve more easily, generally through the use of a Digivice owned by the human. In such cases, the Digimon is channeled large amounts of energy and is therefore able to instantaneously digivolve to a higher level. However, these Digimon will generally de-digivolve or degenerate back into a lower form after a fight. Digimon partnered to humans are also commonly able to use special forms of Digivolution not naturally available, giving these Digimon many different forms. These include Armor Digivolution and Biomerge Digivolution.

In some cases, Digimon have also been granted the ability to digivolve into higher forms by other, very powerful Digimon. In Digimon Tamers, Impmon is able to digivolve into his Mega form by using power given to him by Zhuqiaomon. Motorcycle Madness Calumon is also able to help Guilmon, Renamon, and Terriermon digivolve, and with the help of the DigiGnomes he was even able to trigger the Digivolution of Digimon throughout the entire Digital World in order to prepare for the upcoming fight against the D-Reaper, because he is the concept of Digimon, the "Digi-Entelechies", given form.

During Digivolution, a Digimon's appearance changes, and many of its other classifications (such as attribute and family) also sometimes do. The Digimon's fighting ability increases significantly, and the resulting Digimon is considered to be of a different species. However, Digimon species which are connected through Digivolution are generally similar in appearance. For example, Agumon is a small dinosaur-like Digimon; one of his Digivolved forms is Greymon, a much larger fully-grown dinosaur, and then MetalGreymon, a large armored and winged dinosaur. However, Digimon can sometimes digivolve into forms that appear very different. Salamon is a dog-like Digimon but can digivolve into Gatomon, a cat-like Digimon. Gatomon is able to further digivolve into Angewomon, a bipedal winged angel.

Concept

Digimon reside in the Earth's various electronic networks as well as in the Digital World. As they are essentially computer data they can download additional data to themselves which makes them stronger. If they download enough data, Digivolution is triggered. During Digivolution, the Digimon's appearance changes and, in most instances, becomes significantly stronger than before. The resultant form of the Digimon almost always has a different name than the previous. However, the Digimon's consciousness remains unchanged. If a Digimon does not absorb enough data needed to maintain the form it will not be able to retain that form for long and revert to a lower Level in a matter of time.

Digivolution is divided into multiple Levels, made up of an egg form called the Digi-Egg (デジタマ Digitama?) and six main evolutionary steps.

Main Digivolution Stages (English adaptation terms with Japanese terms in brackets):

Fresh (幼年期 I Younenki I?, lit. "Baby I")

In-Training (幼年期 II Younenki II?, lit. "Baby II")

Rookie (成長期 Seichouki?, lit. "Child")

Champion (成熟期 Seijukuki?, lit. "Adult")

Ultimate (完全体 Kanzentai?, lit. "Perfect")

Mega (究極体 Kyuukyokutai?, lit. "Ultimate")

If left to its own devices a Digimon will naturally age, and over time may digivolve using data from the environment. Digivolving from the initial Fresh stage usually progresses but each subsequent level takes progressively more time. Because of this, only a sparse number of Digimon naturally reach their final forms. Anger and/or the necessity to survive in a great battle can often spur Digivolution. When Digimon are deleted they either regress completely into Digi-Eggs or break apart into innumerable pieces of errant data that can be easily absorbed or "loaded" by other Digimon.

However, when a Digimon forms a bond with a human, they may digivolve more quickly. Using a Digivice, humans can allow a Digimon to almost-instantaneously digivolve to a higher level by sharing their energy. This action takes a large amount of energy and cannot happen if the Digimon is weak, injured or hungry. Digimon who digivolve using a digivice will degenerate, or "de-digivolve" to a lower form after a certain amount of time or if sufficiently injured in a battle. Usually, a partner Digimon's default stage is Rookie; Gatomon from Digimon Adventure being a notable exception as she naturally digivolved before meeting her human partner Kari Kamiya. However, sufficient injury or energy loss can cause a Digimon to revert to an even lower form after naturally digivolving. A few other Digimon not partnered to humans also have the ability to temporarily digivolve to higher levels, then later revert to their base form with Hackmon from Digimon Adventure tri. being a notable example.

On top of the regular stages, special forms exist that can usually only obtained through special methods:

Special Stages

Armor (アーマー体 Āmā-tai?, lit. "Armor Form"), an ancient form of digivolution which only a handful of Digimon are capable of. To gain this form, the Digimon needs to absorb the energy from one of the special Digi-Eggs (デジメンタル Digimental?). If a Digimon has multiple Digi-Eggs, its digivolved forms become progressively more powerful. An Armor Digimon's power is similar to that of a Champion's and were often equated as such in various card games, with some outright stating that they were the same. They are also considered equivalent to Ultimates in Digimon World DS, Digimon World Dawn and Dusk, and Digimon Story: Lost Evolution, and Rookie in Digimon Battle.

Hybrid (ハイブリッド体 Haiburiddo-tai?, lit. "Hybrid Form") is a special level which is related to the Spirits of the Legendary Warriors; by merging with one or more of the Spirits, someone can turn into a special Digimon of this level.

Human Hybrid is a form that transforms a human or digimon into a human-like Digimon, whose power rivals that of a Champion. To attain this, one requires the H Spirit of one of the Ten Legendary Warriors. Human Hybrids were treated as equivalent to Champions in Digital Monster Card Game and became Champions in Digital Monster Card Game α.

Beast Hybrid is a form that transforms a human or digimon into a more bestial-looking Digimon whose power rivals that of an Ultimate's. To attain this, one requires the B Spirit of one of the Ten Legendary Warriors. Beast Hybrids were treated as equivalent to Ultimates in Digital Monster Card Game and became Ultimates in Digital Monster Card Game α.

Fusion Hybrid, also known as Fusion Form (融合形態 Yuugoukeitai?), is a powerful form, achieved using both an H-Spirit and B-Spirit. Fusion Hybrids were treated as equivalent to Megas in Digital Monster Card Game and became Megas in Digital Monster Card Game α.

Unified Hybrid, also known as Transcend Form (超越形態 Chouetsukeitai?) uses five H-Spirits and five B-Spirits, combining to give a human or digimon an incredibly advanced and powerful form. Unified Hybrids were treated as equivalent to Megas in Digital Monster Card Game and became Megas in Digital Monster Card Game α.

Burst Mode: Shown so far only in Digimon Data Squad and Digimon Masters, though Burst Mode Digimon appear in other media such as cards and games, Burst is "the power that exceeds Mega," though it may just be similar to a mode change where Digimon of a certain level transform to attain greater power such as Imperialdramon Dragon Mode. A Burst Digimon retains a similarity to their original form but has new attacks and a clear increase in power. It is its own special level in Digimon Masters.

Ultra (超究極体 Chō Kyuukyokutai?, lit. "Super Ultimate") is a level even higher than Mega. Its existence was a major focus of Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01. Only a few Digimon are at this level and many times they are just classified as Mega for convenience, though more recent games have slowly started using it.

Xros Wars (クロスウォーズ Kurosu Wōzu?, lit. "Xros Wars"): Levels are not mentioned in Digimon Fusion and its related media, and most of the Digimon created for the series are specified as being at the "Xros Wars" level in the Digimon Reference Book. Some media depict these Digimon as having no level at all.

In the anime and some other media a Digimon will usually shout out its type of Digivolution immediately before digivolving and then shout out its new name immediately after. Examples include: "Agumon digivolve to... Greymon (Agumon shinka! Greymon)!" and "Imperialdramon mode change to... Fighter Mode! (Imperialdramon Mode Change! Fighter Mode)!" Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth parodies this: when an Elecmon and Numemon shout out "Elecmon/Numemon digivolve to!" only for nothing to happen, they state they thought just yelling it was how you digivolve. This confuses the rest of the characters.

Though Digivolution is named after the theory of evolution it is more similar to metamorphosis, though there is also an element of aging involved as seen in the Japanese stage terms.

Effects of Digivolution

When a Digimon reaches the next its level of digivolution its appearance may resemble its previous form or have no relationship at all such as Gatomon, who resembles a cat, digivolving to Angewomon, an Archangel Digimon. Usually, with the case of Digivolution to the Champion level the resultant Digimon is larger than the previous form, but Digivolution to the Ultimate level can often cause the Digimon to refine its strength and decrease its size at the same time, such as (e.g. Togemon to Lillymon). The same circumstances can arrive with Mega Digivolution such as MetalGreymon (Vaccine) to WarGreymon.

Forms of Digivolution

Digivolution

Standard Digivolution

Digivolution (進化 Shinka?, lit. "Evolution") is one of a Digimon's special abilities. Digivolution is part of a Digimon's natural life cycle with Digimon usually digivolving to stronger forms as a result of age and experience. Not all Digimon may undergo it but it can happen naturally. They may gain armor and/or clothes. In the anime and other media Digimon can only stay in their Digivolution until their energy or data drops to zero. In the dubbed version of Digimon Adventure and its sequel Digivolution is accompanied by a sound reminiscent of a dial-up phone Internet connection, possibly to signify how they download data to become stronger.

Digivolution sometimes causes the Digimon to digivolve to a lower level. In some of the Digimon World games, a Digimon can digivolve to Sukamon or PlatinumSukamon regardless of its current level if it poops too many times (e.g., an Ultimate level can digivolve to the Champion level Sukamon, despite being a level higher). In Digimon Tamers: Battle of Adventurers, Apocalymon digivolved to Mephistomon. In Digimon Masters, the Mega version of Shoutmon can digivolve to the Ultimate level OmegaShoutmon despite it being a level lower.

In Digimon Tamers it is more difficult to trigger Digivolution in partner Digimon. In this universe, the ultimate source of Digivolution for every Digimon is Calumon, a Digimon created by the Digital World's gods the Digimon Sovereigns to put the power of Digivolution in a space small enough that it couldn't be detected by the malicious computer program D-Reaper. Azulongmon Explains It All A Digimon's Tamer must swipe a card[2] into their D-Power as an activator for Calumon to give them Digivolution energy. To digivolve to the Ultimate level a partner Digimon is sent the energy of a Blue Card via the D-Power as well as being given some of Calumon's energy.

In Digimon Data Squad a human partner evokes D.N.A. within themselves. D.N.A. is a manifestation of a human partner's emotions they can send to their Digimon to prompt Digivolution. Some non-partnered Digimon feed off the negative thoughts of people to digivolve in this series. The call is "D.N.A., Charge!".

In each series it is possible for a swarm of Fresh or In-Training Digimon to combine into one of a higher level. As this method of evolution produces a Digimon with one consciousness it cannot be considered a type of DNA Digivolution.

Super Digivolution / Matrix Evolution / Perfect Evolution / Warp Digivolution

Super Evolve

Super Digivolution (超進化 Chou Shinka?, lit. "Super Evolution") is the term for when a Digimon digivolves from its Champion stage to its Ultimate form. However, in the English dub of the first two seasons this process is not given a unique term and was simply called Digivolution. This same term is also used in Digimon Fusion to describe temporary Digivolution or Digivolution at will, such as Shoutmon's Digivolution to OmniShoutmon and MetalGreymon's Digivolution to ZekeGreymon.

In Digimon Adventure the power of a Crest is required. At first it requires the DigiDestined to display the trait of their Crest (e.g. Taichi "Tai" Kamiya, courage or Sora Takenouchi, love) in order to achieve Ultimate. Afterwards, it is easier to digivolve to Ultimate but the main activation required an enormous display of the trait in question. Incorrectly displaying that trait results in Dark Digivolution. However towards the end of Digimon Adventure 02 the original eight Digimon are able to digivolve into their Ultimate forms using the power of Azulongmon's DigiCore.

In the Japanese version of Digimon Tamers, both the Champion-to-Ultimate and Rookie-to-Mega progression are proceeded with the words Matrix Evolution. However, only with the latter is the phrase exclaimed by the human partner. In the English adaptation, only evolution to Ultimate is referred to as Matrix Digivolution; the latter referred to as Biomerging. Champion-to-Ultimate Matrix Digivolution is triggered through the aforementioned examples of Calumon and the Blue Cards.

In Digimon Data Squad Perfect Evolution is a method used by the members of DATS to evoke a stronger version of the D.N.A. and evolve their Digimon partner to its Ultimate form. It can be used to digivolve to a Champion stage, or used on a Rookie and have it digivolve straight to Ultimate. The term "Warp Digivolve" is used in the English Dub for the evolution from Rookie to Ultimate. The call is "D.N.A., Full Charge!". There is no prefix used here either.

In Digimon ReArise, Filmon digivolves to Stefilmon using Super Digivolution. Super Digivolve to...! Stefilmon! Raid Clash Battle! Demon Lord of Destruction, Diaboromon! Kabuterimon tries to Super Digivolve but is stopped by an Infermon Clash Battle! Infermon though is able to Super Digivolve to MegaKabuterimon due to Filmon buying time for Kabuterimon by fighting the Infermon. Raid Clash Battle! Demon Lord of Desctruction, Diaboromon!

In Digimon Adventure:, Greymon, Garurumon, Kabuterimon, Birdramon, Ikkakumon, Togemon, Angemon, SkullKnightmon, and Gatomon use this form of digivolution to digivolve to MetalGreymon, WereGarurumon, MegaKabuterimon, Garudamon, Zudomon, Lillymon, MagnaAngemon, AxeKnightmon and Angewomon.

Mega Digivolution

Mega Digivolution

Mega Digivolution (究極進化 Kyuukyoku Shinka?, lit. "Ultimate Evolution") is a Digivolution method that allows an Ultimate Digimon to digivolve to Mega.

In Digimon Adventure 02, it is initially used by Paildramon to digivolve to Imperialdramon. Like Digimon Tamers, this series has the Digimon Sovereigns, though only Azulongmon appears here. Azulongmon shares the energy of a DigiCore with the Adventure 02 partner Digimon, a ball of powerful energy that catalyzes Digivolution in a similar way to what Calumon does in Tamers. Combining the power of their Digivices with that of Azulongmon, the other Digimon who were at the In-Training level at the time digivolve to Rookies but the Ultimate-level Paildramon, who is fighting a losing battle against Mummymon and a Triceramon at the time is given the ability to mega digivolve to Imperialdramon. Dramon Power By the time of Digimon Adventure tri., it is also used by Zudomon, Lillymon, MegaKabuterimon, Garudamon, MagnaAngemon, MetalGreymon, WereGarurumon and Angewomon so they can reach their Mega forms, Vikemon, Rosemon, HerculesKabuterimon, Hououmon, Seraphimon, WarGreymon, MetalGarurumon and Magnadramon. The dub however, only refers to it as "digivolution". Determination Confession Loss Coexistence Future

In Digimon ReArise, Stefilmon uses Mega Digivolution to digivolve to Rasenmon. A New Quest! The Mysterious Visitor

In Digimon Adventure:, MetalGreymon Alterous Mode, WereGarurumon Sagittarius Mode, MegaKabuterimon, Garudamon, Zudomon, Lillymon, MagnaAngemon, and Angewomon use this form of digivolution to become WarGreymon The Mega Digimon, WarGreymon (or BlitzGreymon) Operation Satellite Sniper, MetalGarurumon Activate, MetalGarurumon (or CresGarurumon) The Gold Wolf of the Crescent Moon, HerculesKabuterimon Bolt, HerculesKabuterimon, Phoenixmon Dance of the Heavens, Phoenixmon, Vikemon Vikemon Ventures the Glaciers, Rosemon The Digimon School Under Attack, Goldramon and Magnadramon The End, the Ultimate Celestial Battle or Seraphimon and Ophanimon. The Angels' Determination

Degeneration

Degeneration (退化 Taika?), or De-Digivolution is the opposite of Digivolution. In this process a Digimon reverts to a lower form; this usually occurs when they lose enough of their data, either through falling in battle or simply consuming a temporary boost of energy.

In the anime a Digimon that has used up all the energy from a temporary Digivolution will generally de-digivolve further depending on how high of a form they had been using; Champion to Rookie, Ultimate to In-Training and Mega to Fresh. This first happens in Digimon Adventure when Angemon reverts to Digi-Egg form after using his energy to defeat Devimon. The Legend of the DigiDestined As the Digimon uses the higher form more often they acclimate to it and do not fall so far when it expires. One of the first actual uses of the term "De-Digivolve" in the anime is by Koushiro "Izzy" Izumi. No Questions, Please

In Digimon World DS the protagonist can have a Digimon degenerate in order to increase its total Aptitude (i.e. maximum attainable level), as well as to improve its stats generally when compared to a new Digimon of the same form and follow alternative Digivolution paths some Digivolution paths require the increase in Aptitude, as the necessary level is higher than the Digimon's initial Aptitude. In addition, the Mystic Energy forces nearly all of the Digimon citizens of CITY to degenerate to Digi-Eggs when it attacks and steals their data. The Cyber Sleuth games replaces aptitude with ABI, though it works mostly the same way whilst max level was changed to be its own mechanic.

In Digimon Adventure Apocalymon can forcefully revert a Digimon to the lowest form they are able to maintain (Reverse Digivolution). The Fate of Two Worlds

In Digimon Tamers Antylamon was stripped of her abilities and reverted to Lopmon as punishment for protecting Suzie Wong Rabbit Transit but was eventually able to regain her former power. Shadow of the Beast King In Digimon World 3 Persiamon can use a technique (Helter Skelter) which forces its target to de-digivolve into its Rookie form.

Special Digivolution Types

These methods branch out from normal Digivolution.

Dark Digivolution

Dark Digivolution

Dark Digivolution (暗黒進化 Ankoku Shinka?, lit. "Dark Evolution") is a corrupt form of regular Digivolution, usually resulting in evil Digimon. A Digimon dark digivolves when someone Forces it to digivolve forcefully with a clouded mind or dark power. A Digimon digivolved through this method is evil and perceives nothing but its urges to destroy, making it very dangerous.

In Digimon Adventure Taichi "Tai" Kamiya pressures his partner Greymon to digivolve to his Ultimate stage resulting in SkullGreymon. The Arrival of Skullgreymon Greymon dark digivolves to SkullGreymon again The Emperor's New Home and then into a virus version of MetalGreymon The Captive Digimon in Digimon Adventure 02 as a result of the Digimon Emperor's Dark Ring, Dark Spiral and his black D-3.

In Digimon World: Next Order Kouta Hirose abuses his Growlmon partner Yukimura in an attempt to have him digivolve into a Machinedramon so that he would be strong enough to take on the enemy Machinedramon that had been terrorizing the Digital World. However, Yukimura instead dark digivolves into a SkullGreymon who goes on a rampage until killed by the Hero's partners. Shoma Tsuzuki uses the same process to turn his Omegamon Zwart D Enforcer into Omegamon Alter-B, who is defeated by the Hero shortly afterwards. Unlike Yukimura, Alter-B remains in this form and manages to gain control of himself, then later becomes the official partner of Shoma in this same form. Digimon World: Next Order

In Digimon Survive, Fanglongmon dark evolves to Master due to his partner, Haruchika Minase's desire for revenge against his sister Yukiha Minase for sacrificing him to the Kemonogami. He then has Master absorb him. In the truthful route, Master is defeated which causes Haruchika to be ejected from Master which also causes Master to become Fanglongmon Ruin Mode. Though it was no longer Master, Fanglongmon Ruin Mode was simply a slide evolution and was still a dark evolved form. In the routes other than the truthful route, Shuuji Kayama beats up his Lopmon whilst demanding it evolve so it could kill their enemies. Lopmon dark evolves to Wendigomon then eats Shuuji. In the wrathful route, after seeing Saki Kimishima die, Aoi Shibuya decides she never wants to see anyone ever die again and wants everyone in the world to become friends so no one would ever get hurt again. This causes her to heal Piedmon in a mistaken assumption that he would befriend her as thanks but he instead beats her and her partner Labramon up, leaving them on the verge of death. Aoi's desire to live causes dark energy to fuse her and Labramon together to create Plutomon, with it being stated to be a dark evolution.

In Digimon Seekers, Eiji Nagasumi's jealously and anger towards Leon Alexander causes his partner Loogarmon to digivolve to Helloogarmon. Eiji had decided to murder Leon due to these emotions, whilst Loogarmon had only wanted to defeat Leon and his partner Pulsemon. Helloogarmon goes on an uncontrollable rampage, with the Mindlinked Eiji losing access to his controls which meant he could no longer issue commands to his partner. As Helloogarmon rampaged, Eiji realized the error of his ways but was unable to do anything. This eventually lead to Leon overusing his Mindlink time causing him to fall into a DMIA induced coma. Upon coming to its senses and reverting back to Loogamon, it theorizes it had lost control as their feelings weren't in synch. Armor Digivolution

Armor Digivolution

Armor Digivolution (アーマー進化 Āmā Shinka?, lit. "Armor Evolution") is the fusion of a Digimon with a Digi-Egg (デジメンタル Digimentaru?, "Digimental"). It is featured in Digimon Adventure 02, the card game, manga, drama CDs, and video games. It is an ancient form of Digivolution that was developed when the Digital World was young and it was almost impossible to digivolve even to the Champion level without assistance.

Digi-Eggs aren't necessarily a requirement for Armor Digivolution, and the powers afforded by Armor Digivolution can vary quite a bit, so some are assigned a level based on their power to make things simpler. There is an affinity between a Digimon and a Digi-Egg, so using an incompatible Digi-Egg can cause the Digi-Egg's power to run amok. With a good affinity however, an Armor Digimon can see its power become equivalent to that of a Mega Digimon. Each Digi-Egg contains an elemental power and and were left behind by various Digimon after their demise.[4]

It is used in Digimon Adventure 02, when the Digimon Emperor's D-3 and the presence of Control Spires prevent Digimon from digivolving to the Champion level.

A DigiDestined activates Armor Digivolution by shouting, "Digi-Armor Energize!" or "Digimental Up!". In the English dub, a golden Digi-Egg is activated by shouting "Golden Armor Energize!".

DNA Digivolution

DNA Digivolution

DNA Digivolution is a method of Digivolution in the English dub, first used in Our War Game!. It combines the similar processes known in the original Japanese as Jogres Evolution (ジョグレス進化 Joguresu Shinka?), a portmanteau of the words "Joint" and Progress" that is also romanized as Jogress,[5] and Fusion Evolution (合体進化 Gattai Shinka?). In Digimon Survive, Fusion is instead uses Fusion (融合 Yūgō?).

Following the level retcons in the Digimon Reference Book that gave Xros Wars Digimon levels, the ability for the Fusion to be at a lower level than one of its components occurred. For example, Shoutmon X4B (a fusion of Shoutmon X4 and Beelzemon (2010 anime)) is an Ultimate level Digimon despite Beelzemon being a Mega level.

In Digimon Adventure: Our War Game!, WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon DNA digivolve into Omnimon to fight Diaboromon. This is later identified as a DNA digivolution by Koushiro "Izzy" Izumi after the first formation of Paildramon. Fusion Confusion

In Digimon Adventure 02, the two original Digimon consciousnesses join into one, and the combined Digimon can speak with both voices—often simultaneously. Gatomon's tail ring, in the possession of Gennai, gives the partner Digimon the power to DNA digivolve. A Million Points of Light

In the Digimon Xros Wars manga, DNA Digivolution allows a dying Starmon to survive when he is unable to gather enough energy for normal Digivolution. Xros Stars!! Like a Shooting Star!!

In the English dub of Revenge of Diaboromon, Warp DNA Digivolution allows two Rookie-level Digimon to skip Digivolution to the required stage for combining and go straight to the DNA digivolved form. Agumon and Gabumon are the only ones to have used this, becoming Omnimon without warp-digivolving to WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon.

In Digimon Adventure:, Greymon and Garurumon DNA digivolve into Omnimon in order to stop the Mega Argomon from destroying Tokyo. War Game And to the Digital World However, Agumon at least is left with no memory of his time as Omnimon after dedigivolving. The Celestial Digimon They later DNA digivolve into Omnimon once again to stop Nidhoggmon. Countdown to Tokyo's Annihilation Tai Kamiya subsequently learns from Valkyrimon that during an ancient war, the prayers for salvation of the fallen Digimon and the power of Seraphimon and Ophanimon had allowed WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon to fuse into Omnimon in order to destroy ZeedMillenniummon. The Crest of Courage During the final battle with Abbadomon, the entire human world sends their hope into the Network which is then channeled by Rosemon, Vikemon, Phoenixmon and HerculesKabuterimon to Seraphimon and Ophanimon who use the power to DNA digivolve WarGreymon and MetalGarurumon into Omnimon once again. The Last Miracle, The Last Power

In Digimon Adventure:, the Vademon resurrect Millenniummon by DNA digivolving Moon=Millenniummon and Kimeramon. The God of Evil Descends, Millenniummon This is accomplished by using the digivolution method that was developed by Devimon. The Angels' Determination

DNA Digivolution is handled differently in some video games. In Digimon World 2, Digimon Adventure 02: Tag Tamers, Digimon Adventure 02: D-1 Tamers, and Digimon World Dawn and Dusk, DNA digivolving two Digimon together will permanently fuse them into one new Digimon with increased stats, sometimes forming a new one but other times not. Depending on the game, the resulting Digimon can be either a higher or lower level than its components.

Digimon Tamers: Brave Tamer features Calumon cards which provide the DNA Digivolution function during battle to two Digimon who are equipped with them. The combined Digimon will be the next Digivolution stage of the Digimon who has the lower digivolutionary level or, if the digivolutionary levels are the same, the one who initiates the DNA Digivolution. Digimon World 3 instead provides the capability for two Digimon of specific species, one active and one on the bench, to merge into a single Digimon and perform an attack. It then acts as a tagging maneuver, allowing the benched Digimon to take the place of the active one. Some Digimon are also only available through DNA Digivolution.

DNA Digivolution (Jogres Evolution)

This form of DNA Digivolution allows two or more Digimon to combine into a single Digimon of a higher level.[6][7]

DNA Digivolution (Fusion Evolution)

This type of DNA Digivolution is often synonymous with the Jogres Evolution type but sometimes treated as a separate phenomenon. "Fusion" is used to refer to Digivolutions in which, unlike Jogress Evolution, the resulting Digimon remains the same Level as its components.[6][please confirm][7] This generally only applies to Digimon formed from the combination of Mega Digimon in continuities that lack the Ultra level though after the Reference Book update that gave Xros Wars Digimon levels it can now refer to Digimon such as SkullKnightmon Cavalier Mode, a Champion that is a result of two Champions fusing. This is not to be confused with the term "Fusion Evolution" used in the English dub of Digimon Frontier.

Extra Cross Evolution

Extra Cross Evolution, also shortened to EXE, is a form of digivolution exclusive to Digimon World: Next Order. It is similar DNA Digivolution, however it is given a different name as DNA Digivolution in Next Order is permanent, whilst EXE is temporary and only available during Battle. DNA is specific to only certain Digimon, EXE however, can be achieved by every single Mega level Digimon. Every Mega can perform EXE with every other Mega and Ultimate level Digimon, leading to thousands of combinations. The resulting Digimon will be one of the Yellow Mega level Digimon. Both of the Hero's partner Digimon's stats will be combined, though this cannot cause stats to go above the maximum. EXE can be performed manually, although, there is a small chance of an EXE evolution after they are defeated in battle, which will cause them to be fully healed when the EXE is complete.

Blast DNA Digivolution

Blast DNA Digivolution (ブラストジョグレス Burasuto Jyoguresu?) is a combination of Blast Digivolution and DNA Digivolution introduced in the Digimon Card Game in EX-06. Just like regular DNA Digivolution (specifically, the Jogress version) it allows two Digimon to combine into a single Digimon of a higher level. In the Digimon Card Game, just like regular Blast Digivolution, Ace Digimon that can have Blast DNA Digivolve have Blast DNA Digivolution as an ability. When a player attacks another player — provided the requirements are met — the attacked player can counter and Blast DNA Digivolve with an Ace Digimon in their hand for free. If the Digimon leaves the field for any reason, the player loses memory — the amount lost varying by Digimon. Unlike with regular Blast Digivolution, in which the digivolving Digimon must already be on the field, Blast DNA Digivolution has the two Digimon being combined together in the player's hand — as such all three Digimon must be in their hand for it to work.

Warp Digivolution / Ultimate Evolution / Double Warp Digivolution

DNA Digivolution

Warp Digivolution (ワープ進化 Wāpu Shinka?, lit. "Warp Evolution") is a digivolution process where a Digimon can reach a higher level directly bypassing any intermediate phases. Notable Digimon who have used this, although only implicitly in some cases, are Agumon, Gabumon, Leomon, Angemon, Keramon, Lopmon, and Impmon. In few cases, particularly Agumon, Gabumon, and Angemon, they do not actually bypass any intermediate phases—they simply go through it very quickly. This is shown by Agumon and Gabumon who usually have their Champion and Ultimate forms appear during their respective Warp Digivolutions, and MagnaAngemon appears briefly when Angemon warp digivolves to Seraphimon. In Digimon Adventure tri., warp digivolutions skip the intermediate phases.

In Digimon Tamers Impmon gains the ability to warp digivolve to Beelzemon Motorcycle Madness, though it is never actually called Warp Digivolution in the series.

In Digimon Data Squad, "warp digivolve" refers to digivolving directly from Rookie to Ultimate. The term Double Warp Digivolution is used when a Digimon evolves straight from Rookie to Mega, much like Warp Digivolution from the first two seasons with one subtle difference: during previous seasons' Warp Digivolution, the intermediate phases of the Digimon are shown, but during Double Warp Digivolution all intermediate phases are skipped and not shown at all. The call is "D.N.A., Charge! Overdrive!". In the original Japanese, it is called Ultimate Evolution and during evolution, the Digimon simply uses the term shinka without any prefix.

In Digimon ReArise and Digimon Survive, warp digivolution skips the intermediate stages. In Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, the intermediate stages are skipped when Hackmon warp digivolves to Jesmon. In Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory however, which is in the same setting as Cyber Sleuth, Turuiemon is briefly shown when Lopmon warp digivolves to Antylamon.

Mode Change

Mode Change

A Mode Change (モード・チェンジ Mōdo Chenji?) occurs when a Digimon becomes a different version of its current species, usually with "Mode" in its name. The new mode is usually more powerful than the previous one. Mode Change, unlike Slide Evolution, rewrites the data within a Digimon's DigiCore, whilst Slide Evolution rewrites the DigiCore itself and turns the Digimon into a completely different Digimon.[8] For example, if a MetalGreymon (Vaccine) were to digivolve to MetalGreymon Alterous Mode, it would be Mode Change — as both Digimon are MetalGreymon. Instead, it if digivolved to WereGarurumon, it would be Slide Evolution as WereGarurumon is a completely different Digimon.

In Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory Mode Changes differ from standard Digivolutions in that they allow the Digimon to freely shift between Mode Change forms.

Digimon known to Mode Change are:

UlforceVeedramon to Future Mode

Daemon to Beast Mode

Apocalymon to Creepy Mode

Slide Evolution

Slideevolution

Slide Evolution (スライド・エボリューション Suraido Eboryūshon?) is when a Digimon digivolves to another Digimon species of the same level. Unlike, Mode Change, which rewrites the data within a Digimon's DigiCore, Slide Evolution rewrites the DigiCore itself and turns the Digimon into a completely different Digimon.[8] For example, if a MetalGreymon (Vaccine) were to digivolve to WereGarurumon, it would be Slide Evolution as WereGarurumon is a completely different Digimon. If it instead digivolved to MetalGreymon Alterous Mode, it would be Mode Change — as both Digimon are MetalGreymon.

In Digimon Frontier, it is primarily a way for a Hybrid Digimon to switch back and forth between its Human and Beast forms, such as Grumblemon to Gigasmon Can't Keep a Grumblemon Down, but it is also commonly used by non-Hybrid Digimon to switch between its pure and evil forms, such as Monzaemon to WaruMonzaemon. Island of Misfit Boys Along with using it for battle purposes, after defeating an enemy in their Beast form, the DigiDestined use it to switch back to their Human form to scan the enemy's DigiCode. Darcmon also uses Slide Evolution to become higher level Digimon than itself, though Frontier never states Digimon have levels and came before Bandai gave an official explanation as to what Slide Evolution was.

Warp DNA Digivolution

Warp DNA Digivolution

Warp DNA Digivolution is a simultaneous performance of Warp Digivolution and DNA Digivolution, allowing two Digimon to go straight from lower levels to a higher level that is normally a result of DNA Digivolution.

In Revenge of Diaboromon, Agumon and Gabumon warp DNA digivolve together directly into Omnimon.

Biomerge Digivolution

Warp DNA Digivolution

Biomerge Digivolution, or simply just Biomerge (マトリックス・エボリューション Matorikkusu Eboryūshon?, lit. "Matrix Evolution") is possibly used only in Digimon Tamers. It is a form of Warp Digivolution similar to DNA Digivolution and Digifuse, in that a partner Digimon merges with its human Tamer to digivolve directly to the Mega level. Like DNA Digivolution and Digifuse, the Digivolution is unlocked as a result of the components, in this case the Digimon and their Tamer, being united in a single overriding goal, and yet the original consciousnesses still exist independently within the resultant Digimon on a spiritual level. In a Biomerge, this is represented as the human Tamer lying naked within his or her partner, surrounded by a bubble of light named the Tamer Ball (テイマー・ボール Teimā Bōru?),[9][10] Unlike DNA Digivolution and Digifuse, Biomerge Digivolution can normally only be performed in the Digital World, where both the human and Digimon components are composed of data, but in Digimon Tamers this is rectified when Dobermon delivers power from the Digimon Sovereigns to be used as an interface. The Messenger Within the fiction, the four Digimon shown to have biomerged are indicated to be quite powerful, even for their Mega level.

A Tamer activates Biomerging by commanding, "Biomerge Activate!" in the English dub. In the Japanese version, the term and command Matrix Evolution was used both for evolution to Ultimate and Biomerging.

Tamers and Digimon known to use Biomerging in the anime are:

Takato Matsuki and Guilmon to Gallantmon

Henry Wong and Terriermon to MegaGargomon

Rika Nonaka and Renamon to Sakuyamon

Ryo Akiyama and Cyberdramon to Justimon

Erika Mishima does something similar with her Wormmon in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory, merging with him to become Hudiemon whilst in Cyberspace EDEN, though Hudiemon is at the Champion level, and the digivolution is permanent. Only Erika's consciousness remained.

In Digimon Survive, during the wrafthful route, Aoi Shibuya and Labramon fuse together to become Plutomon. This was permanent, and only Aoi's consciousness remained.

Shining Digivolution

Shining Digivolution

Shining Digivolution is Calumon's attack. In Digimon Tamers, when Calumon releases all of his Digivolution energy, he causes every Digimon in the Digital World to digivolve to Mega. Janyu's Ark It is called the "Light of Digivolution" in Digimon World DS.

Pseudo-Evolution

Pseudo-Evolution

Pseudo-Evolution (擬似進化 Giji Shinka?) is what Akihiro Kurata terms the process he uses to digivolve Gizumon into Gizumon-AT and then Gizumon-XT, with the use of an artificial D.N.A. There is no official term for the process in the English version.

Bio-Hybrid Digivolution

Bio-Hybrid Digivolution is a method of Digivolution in the English dub of Digimon Data Squad. It combines the similar processes known in the original Japanese as Hyper Bio Evolution (ハイパー・バイオ・エボリューション Haipā Baio Eboryūshon?) and Hyper Bio Extra Evolution (ハイパー・バイオ・エクストラ・エボリューション Haipā Baio Ekusutora Eboryūshon?).

Bio-Hybrid Digivolution (Hyper Bio Evolution)

Bio-Hybrid Digivolution (ハイパー・バイオ・エボリューション Haipā Baio Eboryūshon?, lit. "Hyper Bio Evolution") enables Kouki Tsubasa, Nanami, and Ivan to become their first Digimon forms, based on three Armor Digimon. However, the resulting forms are far more powerful than regular Armor types. This type of digivolution is made possible by injecting the scattered data of Digimon collected by Gizumon into a human body, so that the data can merge with the human's D.N.A. . When the D.N.A. is released, the human's body transforms into that of the Digimon, granting them access to their new form's abilities. When the Bio evolution is deleted, the Digimon data reverts back into a Digi-Egg and leaves the human body, and the human cannot evolve into a Digimon again unless re-injected.[citation needed] The call is "Bio Hybrid D.N.A. Charge".

The Bio-Hybrids' first forms are:

Kouki Tsubasa to BioThunderbirdmon

Nanami to BioQuetzalmon

Ivan to BioStegomon

Bio-Hybrid Digivolution (Hyper Bio Extra Evolution)

Bio-Hybrid Digivolution (ハイパー・バイオ・エクストラ・エボリューション Haipā Baio Ekusutora Eboryūshon?, lit. "Hyper Bio Extra Evolution") is caused by Akihiro Kurata re-injecting more powerful digimon data into Kouki Tsubasa, Ivan, and Nanami using data gathered from Gizumon-AT and Gizumon-XT. This power is very dangerous because if the human body cannot contain the digimon data, they also are killed. However, these three overcome this situation and receive the power of Mega level Digimon. The call in English is either "Bio Hybrid D.N.A. Full Charge" or "Bio Hybrid D.N.A. Charge".

The Bio-Hybrids' second forms are:

Nanami to BioRotosmon

Ivan to BioSupinomon

Kouki Tsubasa to BioDarkdramon

Burst Evolution

Burst Evolution

Burst Evolution (バースト・エボリューション Bāsuto Eboryūshon?), also known as Burst Digivolution, is used in Digimon Data Squad and in Digimon Next. In Data Squad, it is a Mode Change, it enables a Mega Digimon to reach its Burst Mode; an even more-powerful form. The call is "Charge! D.N.A. Burst Mode!" in English, and "Charge! Digisoul Burst!" in Japanese. ShineGreymon, MirageGaogamon, Rosemon, Ravemon, BanchoLeomon, and Agumon all manage to get to Burst Mode.

In Next, it is simply a way to digivolve to Mega in the absence of a Digivice; however, it quickly consumes the tamer's life-force, and is dangerous to use. It is invoked by calling out "Burst Charge!". Sho Kahara uses it to digivolve Peckmon to Ravemon Death Struggle: Three Commanders!, while Yu Inui attempts the same to get out of a bad situation so that Tsurugi Tatsuno can continue on. Anti-God Devices Digimon Twin!

X-Digivolution

X-Antibody Digivolution

X-Digivolution (X-進化ゼヴォリューション X-ShinkaZevoryūshon?, lit. "X-Evolution") is a unique type of Digivolution that occurs when a Digimon merges the X Antibody into its DigiCore.

Death-X Evolution

Deathevolution

Death-X Evolution (死のX-進化デクスリューション Shi no X-ShinkaDekusuryūshon?) is a form of X Evolution activated when a Digimon dies. Dorugamon, DoruGreymon, and Dorugoramon can each perform Death-X Evolution to become DexDorugamon, DexDoruGreymon, and DexDorugoramon.[citation needed]

In Digimon Chronicle X, GranDracmon defeats Digimon in the old Digital World, forces them to undergo Death-X Evolution, and then sends them to the Dark Area. Digimon Chronicle X

In Digimon Seekers, Tomonori Ryusenji, having access to the Source Domain, uses it to put large amounts of data into Dorugoramon's DigiCore via its interface, with everyone realizing that if it continued — Dorugoramon would die as its body would be unable to handle that much data. Dorugoramon, in a bid not to die, Death-X evolves and becomes DexDorugoramon. Sons of Chaos: Seekers Chapter 4-10 Sons of Chaos: Seekers Chapter 4-11 Eiji Nagasumi, whilst seeing his Fenriloogamon battling DexDorugoramon, realizes that DexDorugoramon wasn't alive — Dorugoramon had died and was now a zombie as DexDorugoramon. Sons of Chaos: Seekers Chapter 4-12

Blast Digivolution

Blastdigivolution

Blast Digivolution (ブラスト進化 Burasuto Shinka?, lit. "Blast Evolution") appears in Digimon World 3, Pendulum X 3.0, D-Cyber Ultimate, and the Digimon Card Game. The Card Game also introduced Blast DNA Digivolution.

In Digimon World 3, When a Digimon fills its Blast Gauge by taking damage from the enemy or using certain item (DV Plug), the Digimon will digivolve into a new Digimon based on its current level for several turns. That Digimon will be fully healed and have access to its personal finisher. Furthermore, any technique used during that state costs no MP. During that state, the Digimon cannot use DNA DV.

In Pendulum X 3.0 and D-Cyber Ultimate, Blast Digivolution has Digimon temporarily digivolve into a higher form for one attack. Orange will have them digivolve one level higher, whilst green will digivolve them two levels higher. Megas digivolve into more powerful Megas. There are multiple Digimon only available via Blast Digivolution.

In the Digimon Card Game, Ace Digimon have Blast Digivolution as an ability. When a player attacks another player — provided the requirements are met — the attacked player can counter and Blast Digivolve with an Ace Digimon in their hand for free. If the Digimon leaves the field for any reason, the player loses memory — the amount lost varying by Digimon. It also introduced Blast DNA Digivolution.

The concept of Sudden Evolution (突発進化 Toppatsu Shinka?) in Digimon World DS is similar. By using the "Digivolution Disk" item, a Digimon can attain a Mega Digimon form related to its family, which will then perform a single attack before reverting.

Spirit Evolution

These Digivolutions appear in Digimon Frontier, the card game, manga, drama CDs, and video games. They refer exclusively to when a person or a Digimon, uses one or more Spirits to digivolve into a Digimon associated with the Spirit(s).

Spirit Evolution

Spiritevolution

Spirit Evolution (スピリット・エボリューション Supiritto Eboryūshon?) categorizes the use of a Spirit to digivolve. Spirit Evolution results in a Human Hybrid, a humanoid Digimon, or a Beast Hybrid, which produces a Digimon more similar to an animal but not necessarily devoid of humanoid features. In Digimon Frontier, The DigiDestined must release a ring of their own Fractal Code, hold the Digivice and scan it. The Japanese version of Frontier refers to both types of evolution as Spirit Evolution, while in the English version, the call is "Execute! Spirit Evolution!" for Human Spirits and "Execute! Beast Spirit Evolution!" for Beast Spirits. The evolution is represented by the child's clothes disintegrating, then being replaced by the armor pieces of the Spirit. The Beast evolution is very similar, with the child being shrouded in their respective element while combining with the armor, and their Fractal Code taking the shape of a sphere. The children are depicted roaring throughout this process.

Fusion Evolution

Fusionevolution

Fusion Evolution (ダブル・スピリット・エボリューション Daburu Supiritto Eboryūshon?, "Double Spirit Evolution") is the merging of a Human and Beast spirit of the same element to a "Fusion Form" (融合形態 Yuugou Keitai?), a Digimon that has twice the power than what a single Human or Beast spirit can carry. Only two of the DigiDestined, Takuya Kanbara and Koji Minamoto, use Fusion Evolution in Frontier. The appearance of a Fusion Hybrid Digimon can vary, but in the case of Takuya to Aldamon and Koji to BeoWolfmon, they are literally a mixture of features of their respective Human and Beast counterparts. In the English dub, Takuya's call is "Execute, Now! Fusion Evolution!" and Koji's is just "Execute! Fusion Evolution!". This evolution is represented identically to Beast Spirit Evolutions. This is not to be confused with the Fusion Evolution similar to DNA Digivolution.

Unified Spirit Evolution

Unifiedevolution

Unified Spirit Evolution (ハイパー・スピリット・エボリューション Haipā Supiritto Eboryūshon?, lit. "Hyper Spirit Evolution") is a form of digivolution.

In Digimon Frontier, Unified Spirit Evolution is where in the person evolving uses ten of the twenty Spirits to evolve to a "Transcendent Form" (超越形態 Chouetsu Keitai?). Takuya Kanbara and Koji Minamoto are the only children to evolve in this way. Takuya uses the Spirits of Flame, Wind, Ice, Earth, and Wood to become EmperorGreymon, and Koji takes the Spirits of Light, Thunder, Darkness, Water, and Steel to digivolve into MagnaGarurumon. The Spirits of the other children are returned to them when EmperorGreymon and MagnaGarurumon revert to Takuya and Koji. In the English dub, their call is "Unity Execute! Unified Spirit Evolution!". This evolution is represented similarly to Beast Spirit Evolutions, but instead of showing the armor pieces of the Spirit combining with the child, the Spirits are instead shown directly fusing with the child while transforming into the child's respective element, and their Fractal Code takes the shape of a sphere orbited by a ring.

In Digimon ReArise, Vritramon uses Unified Spirit Evolution to digivolve to KaiserGreymon. Clash Battle! KaiserGreymon

Ancient Spirit Evolution

Ancientevolution

Ancient Spirit Evolution (エンシェント・スピリット・エボリューション Enshento Supiritto Eboryūshon?) is the most powerful evolution in Digimon Frontier. All of the Legendary Warrior spirits combine at once to form Susanoomon, the most powerful Digimon obtained through a spirit. Susanoomon appears twice in Frontier; first Takuya Kanbara and Koji Minamoto evolve into him Lucemon on the Loose and then in the final battle of the series all the DigiDestined, except Koichi Kimura, combine to form him. End of the Line In the English dub, The first call is "Ancient Spirits Unite!", while the second one is "Execute! Ancient Spirit Evolution!". The two times this evolution is depicted in Digimon Frontier, it is animated differently. The first time, Takuya and Koji's clothes rip from pure power as they are surrounded by their half of the Spirits. They then merge together into the center point between them as the Spirits circle them, forming Susanoomon. The second time, all five of the component DigiDestined perform form fractal code rings similar to their Human Spirit Evolution before pointing their Digivices into the center point of the them, from which Susanoomon emerges. Similar to Biomerge Digivolution, the DigiDestined's consciousnesses are depicted within Susanoomon as naked forms without visible genitalia.

DigiFuse

Digifuse demonstration

DigiFuse (デジクロス DejiKurosu?, lit. "DigiXros"[11]) is a form of Digivolution that is central to the plot of Digimon Fusion, Digimon Xros Wars (manga), Digimon Story: Super Xros Wars Blue and Red, Digimon All-Star Rumble and other media.

It is similar to DNA Digivolution in that it involves multiple Digimon, here known as "DigiXros Units" combining into stronger forms, but also involves attributes of Mode Changing, allowing the Units to rearrange their data and become body-parts or weapons for the new form. The gestalt entity is usually controlled by the Unit with the most powerful soul, but especially for Dark DigiFuses, the lead Unit can change if one member's soul overpowers the others.

DigiFuse can be achieved using a Fusion Loader held by its chosen General Mikey Goes To Another World! or Hunter Students have Vanished! The Flickering Shadow of Sagomon and most powerful DigiFuses require the "core" Unit to have the mental fortitude to support the unity of the gestalt. Showdown in Shaky Town! So far, the largest DigiFuses involve seven Units with certain groups such as the Starmons or PawnChessmons, being treated as one Unit. The Darkness Loader, on the other hand allows the Forced DigiFuse (強制デジクロス Kyōsei DejiKurosu?, lit. "Forced DigiXros") The Power Drain: The Hunters of Honey Land, also known as the Dark DigiFuse Disaster in the Dust Zone! where the participants aren't necessarily willing.

There are higher "forms" of DigiFuse, although the distinctions seems to be more in name than in effect. Double Fusion (ダブルクロス Daburu Kurosu?, lit. "Double Xros") is a type of DigiFuse performed between two Generals. Hang on, Greymon! The Rise of Shoutmon DX The Double Fusion can be further empowered through a Grand Xros (グランドクロス Gurando Kurosu?), although this only involves adding more of the current Generals' Digimon. Xros Alliance!! The Final Odaiba Showdown!! When Christopher finally opens his heart to Mikey and Nene, they become able to perform the Great Fusion (グレートクロス Gurēto Kurosu?, lit. "Great Xros"), which involves three or more Generals operating in harmony. Great Fusion! The Power of Friendship With a multitude of Generals, it is possible to form an Evolution Xros (エヴォリューションクロス Evoryūshon Kurosu?) of multiple Warp Digivolved Digimon. Xros Stars!! Like a Shooting Star!! However, the ultimate form of DigiFuse is the Final Fusion (ファイナルクロス Fainaru Kurosu?, lit. "Final Xros"), which is enabled with the help of the Code Crown; it allows Mikey to combine Shoutmon with all of his allies and nearly every Digimon in the Digital World. Final Fusion - The Fight For Earth!

Within the DigiQuartz, a Fusion Loader can only digifuse two of a Hunter's Digimon together. This particular modality is called Xros Up (クロスアップ Kurosu Appu?). Workarounds exist when Hunters cooperate with each other, as two can use Double Fusion to combine up to four Digimon A Targeted Taiki! The Super-Celebrity's Warcry! while four can fuse seven, presumably up to eight, with Great Fusion. Now Revealed! The Secret of the Digimon Hunt!

Items can be used in a DigiFuse, as seen when Tagiru Akashi digifuses Arresterdramon Superior Mode with the remains of the Brave Snatcher to form XrosUpArresterdramon Superior Mode. Burn up Tagiru! A Glorious Digimon Hunt!

Generals can disengage a DigiFuse through Disengage Fuse (クロスオープン Kurosu Ōpun?, lit. "Xros Open") Rumble in the Jungle Zone! also known as a Digi-Defuse Back to the Digital World! Hot Time in Dragonland! and a Forced DigiFuse through Forced Xros Open (強制クロスオープン Kyōsei Kurosu Ōpun?). Xros Miracle!! Reel in a Sliver of Hope!!

In Digimon Story: Super Xros Wars Blue and Red there are also two extra different types of DigiFuse: DigiFusion (デジフュージョン Dejifuyūjon?), which is akin to DNA Digivolution in previous titles where the components permanently fuse into the result, and Jogress Up (ジョグレスアップ Joguresu Appu?).

Gender

In all Digimon media except for Digimon Fusion, Digimon do not have physical gender, and reproduce not through sexual reproduction but through a universal system of data recycling. Furthermore, although several species of Digimon have obvious femininity or masculinity in their species name or secondary sex characteristics, such as LadyDevimon or BanchoLeomon, any discussion of an archetypical member of that species will use the pronoun "it", as done in Digimon World Data Squad. The concept is directly explained by two major sources: Chiaki J. Konaka's official Digimon Tamers character design notes for Renamon, and by Renamon herself when she states that "Digimon aren't divided into gender."

Despite their lack of physical gender, as characters the individual Digimon will often be addressed according to male or female gender roles, unless they behave as a mindless animal. Konaka alludes to this by explaining that "gender seems fairly easy to identify in Digimon."[citation needed] However, these gender roles vary from character to character despite any apparent genderedness of their design; for example, the "Renamon of Digimon Tamers and the Renamon of Digimon World Data Squad are almost identical, down to their voices, but are treated as if they female and male, respectively; this continues for the "male" Renamon even when he digivolves into more powerful forms with female secondary sex characteristics, like LadyDevimon or Lilithmon.

Unlike in previous series, Digimon Fusion does not depict any real difference between how gender works for humans and for Digimon. Digimon couple and reproduce sexually,[7] form romantic relationships between genders,[8] and have distinct physical genders.[9] When both male and female members of a species appear, they are either depicted with obviously different designs between males and females, as with Beastmon or Mervamon and Ignitemon, or they lack secondary sex characteristics altogether.

Name

The name of a Digimon species is usually based on its form, and may be a pun. For example, Hyokomon's name and design are derived from the Japanese onomatopoeia for unsteady steps (「ひょこひょこ」 "Hyokohyoko"?), as well as the Chick (Gallus gallus domesticus) (雛 Hiyoko?). The species's name almost always ends in "-mon".

Digimon generally do not have individual names, and are instead simply referred to by the name of their species. So the word "Agumon", depending on the context it's used in, can either refer to the Digimon species or a single individual Digimon of that species. The Centarumon in Digimon Adventure and the Centarumon in Digimon Frontier share the same name because they are of the same species. However, they are not the same individual, and are different in appearance and voice.

When a Digimon digivolves and assumes a new form, its name changes to match the species of its new form. However, it is still the same individual, despite having a different name.

Some Digimon are given names or nicknames separate from their species, such as Zeromaru from Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01.

Classification

Digimon species are given many different classifications. With the exception of level, these are generally only important in the Digimon card game, and play a very small role in Digimon anime.

Level

Digimon species are classified by their "digivolution level", which is sometimes translated as "generation".

Digimon generally hatch out of Digi-Eggs (デジタマ DejiTama?, lit. "Digi-Tama"[10]) as Fresh level Digimon, the lowest and weakest level, roughly equivalent to human infants. Most Digimon of this level are small and do not have well-defined body parts.

Eventually, Fresh Digimon digivolve to the In-Training level, a slightly bigger and more complex form that generally still has undefined body parts.

In the anime, most Digimon encountered are of the Rookie or Champion level, with Ultimate and Mega-level Digimon being progressively rarer. Digimon of one Digivolution level are generally far stronger than Digimon of the previous level. There are exceptions where a Digimon has been able to defeat an opponent of a higher level. There are also cases, such as with Lucemon, Arcadiamon and the Awakened forms of the Sistermons, where a Digimon is far more powerful than what its actual Digivolution level would imply. The opposite can also happen, as Sukamon and Numemon are seen as some of the weakest Digimon in existence, despite being Champion level.

For most Digimon, there are six Digivolution levels:

Fresh, Baby, In-Training I, Training I, or Infancy I (幼年期I Yōnenki I?, lit. "Childhood I"), officially translated as "Baby I"

In-Training, In-Training II, Training II, or Infancy II (幼年期II Yōnenki II?, lit. "Childhood II"), officially translated as "Baby II"

Rookie (成長期 Seichōki?, lit. "Youth"), officially translated as "Child"

Champion (成熟期 Seijukuki?, lit. "Adolescence"), officially translated as "Adult"[11]

Ultimate (完全体 Kanzen-tai?, lit. "Perfect form"), officially translated as "Perfect"

Mega (究極体 Kyūkyoku-tai?, lit. "Ultimate form"), officially translated as "Ultimate"

In some media, there is a level beyond Mega named "Ultra" (超究極体 Choukyuukyoku-tai?, lit. "Super Ultimate form") or "Level VII". The Digimon that fall into this classification are generally considered Megas by other sources. Additionally, some media such as Digimon World DS merge the first two levels into a single unified "In-Training" (幼年期 Yōnenki?) level.

There are also levels which run parallel to the standard progression, the most notable being "Armor" and "Hybrid". The "Armor" level appeared in the Digimon Adventure 02 series and other media, and is reached when a Digimon uses a Digi-Egg to digivolve into an Armor Digimon. The English version of Digimon Card Game refers to it as "Armor Form" to avoid confusion with the Armor type. The "Hybrid" level contains several sub-levels and first appears in the Digimon Frontier series for Digimon who are formed by "Spirit Evolution".

In Digimon Fusion and its related media, Digimon have no level. The Digimon Reference Book and Digimon Heroes! initially classified Digimon introduced by this series as "Xros Wars" level, but the Reference Book later announced, on September 25, 2020, that they would be retconning all Xros Wars level Digimon to have standard levels and attributes.[12]

In Digimon Masters, a "Jogress" level is given to any Digimon obtained through Jogress Digivolution. It also introduced an "Xros" level for Digimon who are the result of DigiFuses, though a June 2020 update turned these Digimon into Jogress Digimon.

Mode Change

There are some Digimon species who have multiple "modes", and are able to "Mode Change" between them. Often, this involves going from their normal form to a special mode that is more powerful in some way. For example, Beelzemon and Beelzemon Blast Mode. A Digimon's different modes are generally very similar in appearance (in this case, Beelzemon Blast Mode is simply Beelzemon with a giant blaster on one arm, green eyes instead of red, and two pairs of wings (two large, two small). Another example is Gallantmon and Gallantmon Crimson Mode where Gallantmon Crimson Mode is Gallantmon with red armor, a spear and sword, and the cape being replaced by angelic wings.

Different modes of a Digimon are generally considered to be the same species. This is because a Digimon who goes through a Mode Change remains at the same Digivolution level (Imperialdramon Dragon Mode, Imperialdramon Fighter Mode, and Imperialdramon Paladin Mode are all Mega level Digimon in all appearances, despite going through two Mode Changes), and retain the same name (except with a suffix giving the name of the new mode).

Although Mode Changing does not result in a change in a Digimon's species or level, it is considered a form of Digivolution. There are a few exception to this though. Lucemon, In Digimon Frontier, as well as most, if not all of its appearances in other media, the Mode Changes Lucemon goes though alter both his form and level; going from his regular Rookie level, to an Ultimate level in Chaos Mode, and then to Mega Level in Larva and Shadowlord Mode forms. Belphemon Sleep Mode's Mode Change to Belphemon Rage Mode in Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and its sequel Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory also alter the form and level, as Sleep Mode is a Mega, with Rage Mode being an Ultra. The same applies to Shadowlord Mode, though this time two levels are skipped due to Shadowlord being Ultra as well.

In Digimon Data Squad, the transition to Burst Mode is called "Burst Evolution", showing that this Mode Change is also considered to be a form of Digivolution.

Attribute

Most Digimon species are classified into five attributes—Data, Vaccine, Virus, Free, and Variable. Most Digimon fall into the first three categories, with "Free" being rarer and "Variable" mostly exclusive to Hybrid Digimon. Some Digimon either have their attribute unidentified or lack them entirely.

Virus Digimon re-write the area they live in in order to create an environment that better suit them, Vaccine Digimon return the environments re-written by Virus Digimon back to normal, and Data Digimon adapt to the environment they live in.

Free is usually seen in ancient Digimon and existed before the others whilst Variable belongs to the Legendary Warriors and can shift between the other attributes depending on the situation.

The main three attributes serve to classify the personalities of the Digimon. The Vaccine Digimon tend to be crusaders, with a great determination to fight against evil and stop injustice, while the Virus Digimon tend to be violent, with a thirst for power and domination. Data Digimon, meanwhile, are usually neutral and focus on their own issues. These attributes have a Rock, Paper, Scissors arrangement where Virus is generally advantaged against Data, Data is advantaged against Vaccine and Vaccine is advantaged against Virus. However, these attributes don't play a very important role in Digimon fights. A Digimon can generally defeat an opponent regardless of attribute if it is stronger than the opponent in Digivolution level and experience. Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth and its parallel story Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth - Hacker's Memory incorporate the attribute triangle as a major gameplay mechanic, where Digimon deal double the damage against and receive half the damage from the attribute that they are strong against while also standardizing Free as outside the arrangement entirely, dealing and receiving normal damage from all attributes. All Digimon outside the main triangle, including Unidentified, Variable and Digimon without an Attribute at all are given the Free Attribute, likely for simplification in the two games.

Family

Main article: Family

Digimon are also classified into different "Digimon families", a concept derived from the Digimon Pendulums. Although most of the card games present these classifications as an inherent trait of each Digimon species, this quality is usually ignored in the series fiction, with one exception: in Digimon Next, the DigiMemories are manifestations of the eight most prominent families, and serve as the archetypes of the various classes of Digimon. In other series, the families only ever recieve allusions from various concepts; for example, in the last arc of Digimon Adventure, the Dark Masters' armies are named after four of the families, and in Digimon Adventure V-Tamer 01, the V-Tamer Tags which Tai Kamiya seeks are named after five of the families.

Each Digimon family have a different colored background in the Digital Monster Card Game and Digi-Battle Card Game, and the Digimon within a family usually have something in common. For example, the Dragon's Roar family consists of Digimon who resemble dragons.

These families become more important in the Digimon World Data Squad and DS Digimon Story games, where these families help determine what attacks Digimon are strong or weak to, as well as influence Digivolution requirements.

Type

As another form of classification, all Digimon species are given a "Type". A Digimon's type is a loose categorization based on general characteristics such as physical appearance—e.g., Agumon is a "Reptile type" Digimon.

A Digimon species is usually classified into only one type. Some types, such as "Insect type", include dozens of Digimon, whilst others, such as "Ancient Insect type" are unique to only a single Digimon (in this case, AncientBeetlemon).

Like the family classification, type is considered to be a fairly trivial and unimportant classification. It has some minor gameplay effects in the Digimon card game. Type is referenced occasionally in the anime, particularly when a new Digimon species is introduced, but has little bearing on the action of the show.

God (神 Kami?) is an immeasurably powerful being of ultimate goodness and infinite love that created the Digital World and its laws, and is possibly a human. It resides within the Digital World's central "Kernel", which is protected by the Celestial Digimon and the rest of the Angel Digimon. The Celestial Digimon, Seraphimon, Cherubimon, and Ophanimon, were given the duty to execute God's enlightened laws, guard its wisdom, and impart its love and mercy, respectively.

Airdramon is said to be close to God, and Angel Digimon are positioned near to it, with Seraphimon the closest of them all, but because of that extreme, they can easily fall into the opposite extreme of "Wickedness". In fact, Lucemon and Daemon (while still a Seraphimon) instigated a failed rebellion against God, alongside many other Demon Lord Digimon, and were deleted to the Dark Area as punishment. Bagramon, one of the Demon Lords who took part, rebelled in rejection of what it saw as the "Unreasonable Justice of the World" that God had constructed, and so had the right side of its body ripped away as punishment. Although Bagramon would be forgiven if it repented before God, it refused to submit, and instead seeks to replace God's justice with its own "New Justice", the purpose of which is to banish God.

Although there are many God Man, God Beast, Evil God, and Demon God-type Digimon, only the Digimon Sovereigns, King Drasil, and the Homeostasis are ever identified as "God".

Royal Knights

The Royal Knights (ロイヤルナイツ Roiyaru Naitsu?) are a group of thirteen Mega-level Holy Warrior Digimon that are the Digital World's sacred guardians, and are famed among Digimon as guardian deities of the Computer Network. The group was founded by Dukemon Crimson Mode, and serves Lianne The Digital World Goddess . Because the Royal Knights are assigned the highest rank of Network Security, it is absolutely impossible to violate Security in their presence. With the notable exceptions of Gankoomon and Jesmon, the Royal Knights rarely intervene with the Digital World, and tend to work alone when they do show their face; however, based on a certain "Prophecy" handed down from the ancient Digital World, it is said that the Royal Knights will assemble at the time of the Digital World's greatest crisis. Lianne gathered the Royal Knights in order to manage the world, and it seems that its will will eventually lead the Royal Knights to cross Servers to the Digital World: Iliad Server and meet the Olympos XII face-to-face.The group also has a natural rivalry with the Seven Great Demon Lords.

Most of the Royal Knights are Human Digimon, although there are a few with bestial forms. Like historical knights, some of the Royal Knights are the lords of other types of Digimon, or associate with a team of subordinates, although they are all subservient to King Drasil. Furthermore, each of the Royal Knights possesses a dogma that it believes in. Each of the Royal Knights also has an X-Antibody forms, and may have additional alternate Modes, which are still considered Royal Knights.

The final member of the Royal Knights, acquired its title through frequent, rigorous training at the direction of Gankoomon, its sponsor. It was originally a Hackmon in which Gankoomon saw promise, and as it traveled the Digital World alongside the Sistermon sisters, intervening in the world's incessant conflicts, it digivolved to BaoHuckmon, SaviorHuckmon, then finally, Jesmon.

Members

Some of the species that are members of the Royal Knights have also appeared as characters in other media, but are not members of the group.
