Chapter 5: Ex-Soldier

Brittany's POV:

"No! She's not infected! Don't you son of a b****!" Keith yells profanities as three Soldiers are forced to hold him down from interfering.

I don't think Talon is going to come running with a bow this time. Keith can't fight off an Army and just look at me, I can't even move. I knew my luck would run out eventually, but you'd think it would be from something a bit more heroic than this.

Not only that, but if I'm infected, I'd rather go down from a bullet than turn into that creature that walks the night.

I don't look at the man as his boots splash in the rain in front of me, gun aimed. I lay my head down flat on the ground and close my eyes. Suddenly the gun goes off and I scream in pain, but I'm not the only one.

The man, who was two feet in front of me, managed to miss my head and get my right shoulder with about three bullets instead. I quickly look up and see a Runner on top of the Soldier, biting into his neck. The others shoot it dead as well as the newly infected man.

"Runners!" One of them yells, "Take the Survivors to the quarantine!"

Suddenly we're all yanked up and two men keep a hold on each of my arms. I yell when one of them twists my injured shoulder the wrong way. They shove all of us into the cramped backseat of a Military vehicle.

I look outside and see the Runners attacking the Soldiers and in turn, they're shooting as many as possible. I try to open the door but it's locked. I go for my pistol but it's gone, they must have pulled it off of me when they held me down.

We speed off towards the quarantine zone and we have no choice but to stay put. Once we get inside the gate they yank me out and drag me like a dog.

They pull the boys and Keith in a different direction towards a large building and Keith and I both fight. I look towards what I think is the sleeping quarters and I see Zoey and Ally on the second story looking out their window at us in worry. As a matter of fact, just about everyone is looking out at us.

"Get off of me!" I yell and throw my foot up, only to be hit in the shoulder and I yelp in pain.

I watch as Keith is dragged inside and I'm shoved into a separate building a good ways away, the dorms separating his building from mine. They push me down the hall of many cells, but they're all empty except for one that is occupied by a man, and stop at a cell at the very end of the hall.

They shove me inside and slam the sliding barred door closed, announcing, "You got lucky. Let's see what the boss thinks."

They then exit the long corridor and I'm left with no noise except my heavy breathing and the rain pelting the building. The man in the cell opposite of mine doesn't talk to me and for that I'm thankful. I'm pretty sure I don't look too sane at the moment.

The rain has soaked me from head to toe, my shirt and neck as well as my shoulder is covered in blood, and I bet ten to one I'm shaking like a leaf. Yeah, he probably thinks I belong in the nuthouse.

The man has to be around my age, a little on the short side but his muscle is still defined pretty well. He has on ragged clothes with dirty blonde hair and brown eyes to match. He needs a hair cut.

Ha! Here I am about to be killed and I'm worried about my fellow prisoners hair. I scoff aloud and sit Indian style on the floor, holding my right shoulder that I can't even move. Unfortunately, they just had to shoot my shooting arm.

On the right side of my cell against the wall is a window. There is one in the other guys cell as well. It's dark but you can still see detail from the lightening that comes every once in a while.

"What'd you do? I haven't seen you around before." The man say's in a deep voice, calm as day.

I look up and glare at him, "Should I start listing?"

He chuckles and asks, "How'd you tweak your shoulder?"

"I got shot, if you haven't noticed. Why are you in here?" I reply, even though I don't really care. I lean my back against the bars with my left side facing the man.

"Was a Soldier, got caught doing something I shouldn't have." He reply's in a bored tone.

That's when I remember my knife. I got for it, but they frisked me of that as well.

"A**holes." I grumble under my breath.

"Pardon?" The man asks.

"Nothing." I snap.

It's already morning and daylight, but no one has come in here. The sun is shinning through the barred up windows and Soldiers are walking the grounds; you'd think I'd be dead by now.

I really am being a pessimist.

I look at the man and ask, "When is someone coming?"

He reply's, "They usually send a guard in in the mornings."

As if on cue a brunette woman steps through the door with a Soldier.

The man then explains to her, "We don't often have prisoners but when we do someone has to keep watch on them..." He then further explains her duties. I can tell from here it's Allison but she hasn't noticed me.

When the Soldier hands her an automatic and leaves she turns to me and her eyes widen.

"Britt? I thought they would put you in the living quarters." She gasps coming up to my cell.

I scoff, "Well as you can see, I've had the royal treatment."

"Why are you in here?" She asks, bending down to my sitting level.

"I fought," I lie, "Why are you here?" I snap.

"Because we got caught, but we've earned the guards trust so they put me on duty. Britt.. They'll kill you if you don't cooperate." She gapes in worry. I scoff, cooperation is the last thing she needs to worry about.

"I know. Where's Talon, Ashton, Cain, and Sawyer?" I ask, hopeful she knows something.

"We all stayed together, but Ally and I got separated. We managed to get into a building and stay hidden. The next morning we woke up to yelling and looked out the window. We saw all four guys being chased into a building not far from us. The Hunters burned it down. Sawyer, Ashton, and Cain managed to slip out the back without being seen, but I never saw Talon. I heard gunshots on the inside... I don't know if he ever made it out but we saw the few Hunters they sent in all come out with no one else..." She explains.

I don't reply, I just stare at the floor. I lean my head back on the bars and look at the man across from me. 'Ex-Soldier, huh? Well you're getting me out of here,' I think to myself.

"Tell Keith and the boys I'm getting us out of here. All of us." I growl.

"Britt they'll-" I interrupt her, "Kill me? I know. Now just leave me alone and tell them." I snap.

Talon is Talon. He's smart. He always manages to squeeze out of things. He's alive, I know he is. It's almost like something I can feel.

I just hope I'm not proven wrong.

- - - - -Keith's POV- - - - -

"They're clean," One of the Soldiers tells another, "Assign them a room and keep security on them in the city."

I have no idea what they're talking about, but they're not what I'm worried about right now. I'm afraid of what they'll do to Britt.

"Get up." The man demands and leads us outside and into what looks like an imprisoned city. Once we're outside and in the fenced off city, the office door slams closed and I'm now left responsible in this mini prison-like town for these boys.

Looking behind me, I see a small office in which I was just shoved out of. Looking in front of me, I see a city that is on the verge of ruins. A high electric fence stretches around the entire city with patrol guards all around it. Not only that, but there are some parts of the fence with concrete barricades.

Zoey suddenly comes running and asks, "Keith? What are you guys doing here? Where's Britt? What happened?"

I calm her down and fill her in on what happened, but instead of telling her Britt was infected I told her she fought with the Soldiers. I don't forget to include the boys as well.

"Well, Ally told me to tell you that Britt said she's getting us out of here, but how?" She asks. This girl is worse than Britt. At least Britt isn't overly excited.

"I don't know, but I'm going to need to talk to her. Have you seen any of the others?" I ask.

She then proceeds to tell me a story about the Hunters chasing the guys and Talon not making it out. To be honest, it doesn't effect me much.

"Come on, I want to show you something." Zoey then proceeds to pull me away by my arm, and the boys and I have to jog to keep up with her.

"Wait, is there any way I can see Britt?" I ask.

She stops and thinks for a minute, then say's, "There is one way, but it'll have to be tonight."
