[A/n] opened her eyes as the sound of a ringtone woke her up, but the light in the room blinded her. She quickly closed them again and hid her face in the pillow under her. She felt a soft and warm touch on her back and her body was able to relax after being violently awoken. However, the gentle touch left as soon as it arrived. The woman felt the cover move and the ringtone stopped before a deep morning voice answered the call. She tried not to listen to their conversation as it was private but he was speaking right next to her, his tone rather quiet to not disturb the sleepy woman.

"I will call back later," Chamber said then he hung up. Suddenly, he felt a pair of arms around his waist. A giggle escaped his lips and he turned his head to look down at his lover. "Bonjour, mon amour. Did you sleep well?"

She hummed, her voice still hoarse from the lack of sleep. [A/n] held on tight onto the man. She needed to feel his warmth for longer, to be embraced by his strong arms. A hand landed on her head and it played with her hair.

"Are you busy today?" she finally spoke, her eyes still closed. For once, she wanted to have a lazy day with him. Maybe not the full day as she also had work to do but she wanted to at least enjoy this morning with him.

He laid back down in the bed beside her and held her close as well. "It should be fine. Besides, I would much rather be here with you."

It brought a smile to her lips. The rise and fall of his chest under her rocked her. She fought back the urge to sleep to be able to enjoy his presence. He landed a kiss on top of her head lovingly. It was still very new to them but also not so foreign. It felt right to be here, to love each other, but it was also scary. Their job was life-threatening as either of them could die at any moment but they could also watch each other's back at all times.

A peaceful silence enveloped the room, the sound of breathing was all they could hear. Eventually, not able to fight back her tiredness, [A/n] decided to break this silence in order to avoid falling asleep. "Vincent," she said his name and it caught his attention. It felt strange to call him by his first name. It was almost a violation of the rules in the protocol: they were revealing their past when they should forget it and had a more than 'colleague' relationship. "Do you mind if I ask personal questions?"

He was hesitant but he believed in her discretion and sincerity. He did not entrust his love to anyone, however, it was still difficult to reveal one's secrets whether they were good or bad. "Go ahead," he told her, his tone more serious now.

"You don't have to answer if you don't feel comfortable."

What a sweetheart. "I will, thank you. Would you mind if I ask questions myself? If we are going to spend more time together, we should slowly start to get to know each other better."

He was right. [A/n] did not want to hide more things from him. He knew the most horrible part, what was there to hide anymore? Yet, it was still the scariest thing to do. Admitting to the person you are madly in love with that you were a murderer was insanely nerve-wracking. "Alright," she agreed to his deal. "What were you doing before the protocol?"

He pondered for a second. "I was in the French military but soon enough I became an elite sniper, a PMC marksman. I was basically an assassin if you want. After all this, I wanted to pursue this love for guns that I had and I became a weapons designer. I work for Kingdom but I do some other personal investment."

"Like that portal on the island?"

He groaned, ruffling her hair to make her stop. It was followed by a giggle on her part. She knew he hated when the topic was brought up. "Such a bad investment, really." He sighed, stopping his movement. "What about you?"

It took her a minute to be able to gather the right words. "Nothing really. I ran away, going from one country to another to flee anyone who tracked me down. I did settle once but lived in the underground. It was not so bad as it helped me find a place where no one would want to go. People there are violent and looking for blood so it is quite dangerous. I could easily sneak in and out without being bothered."

"That must not have been easy every day."

She shrugged and traced forms on his naked torso to distract her. "I've lived fine."

"Weren't you from a wealthy family? You could have lived a more comfortable life."

The first touchy subject of the morning. It was to be expected and she knew she was not being forced to say anything. She could always stay quiet but she wanted him to know her better. At least, if he was scared of her, his departure would be less hurtful if it is said now rather than in a few years. "I did. But I lost my fortune to protect myself." She took a deep breath to calm herself. Then, she felt reassuring pats on her back. It made her smile. It was the last push she needed before speaking. "I paid Cypher to erase everything. I had spent months and months trying to look at the perfect hacker to hide any proof of my or my family's existence. It cost me my fortune." She looked in the distance, her eyes empty of emotion, but she had no regrets.

So she knew Cypher before the protocol. "He did a wonderful job. It was hard to find any information," he admitted. The agent on top of him already knew he had been trying to find anything related to her past.

She hummed with a slight nod before looking up at him. "That's why it surprised me when you had that police record on your desk. I thought every proof had disappeared."

"It was my double, actually, that found it," he explained to her, looking back down at her. "Apparently he found someone who was talking about your case and he was able to get his hands on this dossier."

The woman snorted, returning to her original position. "That sneaky bastard."

It made her lover chuckle. "I hope you do not refer to me as such as well."

She shook her head and smirked. "No, you're just a manipulative asshole."

He raised his eyes to heaven then back to her. Then, he felt the urge to ask her to go further on this. Since she brought it up, the idea of hearing her side of the story written on the documents crossed his mind. "[F/n]." He used her first name and he immediately noticed how tense she became. She was still feeling unsafe about her first name. "Would you mind telling me your story?"

She was silent, motionless. He could not read her facial expression from where he was but he could picture her distant gaze and saddened eyes. "Didn't you read the document?" she asked, sounding colder than she intended.

He kissed the top of her head reassuringly and spoke up. "I did. But I never heard your side of the story."

It warmed her heart to hear him say this. No one ever took the time to listen to her. Maybe, he really cared about her, maybe, she could tell him. Flashes from the past filled her mind and it made her shiver. Vincent immediately noticed it and took a hold of her cheek to make her look up. She seemed terrified by something, darkness covering her eyes. The man instantly regretted asking that much out of her when she clearly had not healed from her past wounds.

"Excuse-moi, mon ange. I should have not pushed you."

His voice was soft, soothing. It reminded her that she was not alone anymore. She could lean on him, tell him when she was not okay. He would always be there for her. She shook her head, leaning in his hand. "No, I... I want to tell you. You deserve to know."

She shifted her body a bit to face him, hoping his gentle smile would help to ease her nerves. Chamber moved his body to the side, placing an arm under her head while his other hand gently rubbed her cheek. She melted under his touch, already feeling more comfortable than before. She took a deep breath, feeling confident enough, and started her story.

"As you know, I was from a rather rich family. I was the first child and lived a happy childhood. Then, my parents had a son." Her throat tightened at the thought of her little brother. "He was the spoiled child, everyone loved him and so did I until he turned into be a total asshole. Once he reached middle school, he totally changed. He had everything for him, you see, looks, love, money... It got to his head and no one ever told him it was wrong. I was just a nuisance in his life, taking what belonged to him, so he started to bully me." Chamber tried his best to reassure her as she spoke. He could only imagine how hard it was to tell. "It was not so bad at first but then, he brought friends along. My parents did not know, I didn't even try to tell them because I was too scared of my own little brother. It only went downhill after that."

[A/n] stopped for a moment as she started to be overwhelmed by feelings of anger and pain. "On this fateful day, I had wished I could just become invisible so that no one could ever see me. Then, the First Light appeared while I disappeared. When I woke up and looked down at my body, it was nowhere. I screamed and my parents came running into my room. They could not see me but when they realized I had become invisible, they got scared of me." A sad smile featured her face as she looked away to collect her thoughts before looking back at her lover's understanding gaze. "The news spread quickly about the First Light and people like me were being called Radiants. I had become an outcast for my family and was now entirely isolated. And my brother reveled in my pain. No one knew about my abilities, my parents made sure of that. I stopped school and was not allowed to see anyone. They feared that people would learn about me. Not for me, but for them. They did not care about the Radiants hunters, hell, I'm sure they would have paid them to kill me. It was all about appearances. They did not want to lose faces in front of others."

Vincent was listening carefully to her words, assimilating all new pieces of information. He felt a wave of anger built inside of him towards the people who hurt her. "One time, I sneaked out. It was pretty easy for me to be honest, I was doing it all the time without being caught. I walked in the middle of the night in the forest nearby when I encountered this strange person. He gave me a handgun." She frowned at the thought. It was still one of the biggest mysteries in her life right now. Why were they here? What was their purpose? "I have no idea what this person wanted but they gave this gun to me, only asking a nice show in return. I was so confused but before I could ask for more details they had left. When I was back home, I kept it with me the whole time. I could hide it so I was not afraid of being caught. I started to really fear for my life the more and more I stayed in this hellhole. My sense of danger started to develop then and it gave me headaches all the time because it kept alarming me of the dangers surrounding me. It was unbearable, I wanted to make everything stop. On the last day," she cut short once she said it, her throat feeling dry all of a sudden. She had no regrets about doing what she did but the ghosts inside her brain terrified her. She had never been free and each time she remembered it, they would be here. Vincent's lips on hers gave her the last bit of courage she needed to finish. [F/n] spoke up again, her heart pounding fast. "My mom cooked for us on this day. I was alone at the end of the table like always. Everything seemed normal except their attitudes. My headache was worst than usual also. I waited at the table for the food to finish. That was when... when I noticed my mother adding something else to one of the plates. But the weirdest thing was that she brought this very specific plate. She had not handed me my food since the accident. My brain told me not to eat it no matter what. When I raised my head to look at my brother, he was smiling; my dad, impatient; my mom, tensed. They were poisoning me without any remorse."

A frown on her face, fists clenched, she told him the reason behind her police record. "I shot a bullet through my brother's skull. Then my father. Then my mother. It went quickly, very quickly. None of them had time to react. Even I did not know what just happened. I let my instincts protect me, I always did. I sat back down and let it sink in. Then, I cried. Not from guilt, they were tears of relief, joy. I was free. I was a murderer but I would no longer suffer." She scoffed, almost making fun of her naivety. "I ran away from my hometown after that, trying to look for a shelter with all the money I had gathered for years. I had stolen my parents' credit cards as well in case of emergency.  Then, you know the rest."

As she finished her story, she was still afraid of how Vincent would react. He had not said a word since then. Then, the man brought her into a tight hug, placing his head between her shoulder and her neck, and gently kissed it. His embrace felt warm against her cold body, bringing tears to her eyes. She had not been shown that much love in decades. [A/n] clenched his shoulders tightly and let her frustration out.

"You did a good job hanging in there."

What did she do to deserve happiness again? She had done nothing good in her life to allow joy to find a place by her side. And yet, this man that she used to loath was actually the key to ending her nightmares. He accepted her despite knowing that she killed her own family in cold blood. Sure, he was not clean himself, but there was still a gap between killing strangers as part of a job and killing your supposed loved ones. Chamber stroked her hair smoothly, keeping a tight embrace to make sure she would understand that he was there for her now. He could never possibly understand what she went through but being by her side was the best he could do.

Once she calmed down, they parted ways, already missing each other's warmth. Chamber still looked at her with his loving eyes. A sigh escaped her lips at the thought that everything was going to be alright between them. She actually felt better after telling everything that was on her heart. It was the first time she did it in years but she was glad she did. A certain heaviness was lifted off her heart.

"I need to tell you something," Chamber said out of nowhere. He reached out for one of her hands and kissed her fingers. [A/n] smiled at his gentle gesture and waited patiently for him to continue. "I did get close to you for your abilities as a Radiant. You seemed like an easy target as well so I tried to trick you in a way. Well, I partly succeeded but I did not anticipate the impact of your charms would have on me."

[F/n] chuckled lightly. "You should be careful, I'm quite the animal," she joked, acting like she was going to bite him.

A laugh escaped his mouth as he kissed her fingers again. "I would not mind seeing more of your ferocity." He winked, making her flustered. He enjoyed her cute reaction so much. She could make the weirdest faces but also the cutest. Then, he continued his explanation to her. "But now that you know about my double and that you are crazy about me-"

"Sorry but, you're even crazier about me," she interrupted him once more, tongue sticking out.

"That was not what you were saying last night."

She turned red at the memories. "Don't bring that up now!"

"I've fallen crazy for you, Chamber. I'm madly in love with you," he repeated her words with a smug face.

"Stoooop," she yelled, hiding her blush in his chest. Chamber could not help but laugh at his lover's adorable reaction - which made the woman upset as she puffed her red cheeks.

"Anyway," he changed the subject, trying to bring back a more serious conversation between them, "I wanted to use you to infiltrate some places to gather information. Having you by my side would have saved me time and money rather than having a long list of informers," he told her honestly. He did not feel the need to tell her the whole plan but he had to inform her of the importance she had in it. "I know it sounds selfish, and it is, but your help is needed."

"So," she started after thinking for a bit, "would I be part of your bigger picture?"

He chuckled, pecking her on the cheek. "You already are part of my life."

She grinned and hugged him tightly. It all felt a bit strange still. It felt surreal like she was stuck in a dream. "Just call me when you need me. I want to help you."

One of his hands traveled up and down her back. "Are you sure? You could be working against some of the protocol's laws."

She nodded her head. He was all that mattered to her right now. No one has ever shown as much sympathy and love towards her as he did. There was no way she was going to let him down. "Let me be useful to you."
