Chapter 42

James walked before them all, leading the way towards the Forbidden Forest, and Jenna, Sirius, Remus, and Peter followed him right behind.

Β  Β Β  Jenna had many times sneaked off to the forest with James in their first year. Hagrid spend the first few months chasing them away from the edge of the forest, but after some while, he retired himself from the task of bothering with those twins at all.

Β  Β Β  Despite all the good times Jenna had those days, she'd never had this much fun until tonight, and of course she never thought to be in the company of a werewolf, a rat, a dog, and a stag, meanwhile in a cat form.

After long hours and at twilight, they finally retrieved back to the Whomping Willow, tired from all the strolling.

Β Β  When they got to the Shrieking Shack, they all laid down on its dusty old floor, trying to take at least one or two hours of sleep before Remus's transformation.

Β  Β Β  None of them had turned back to human yet, in fear of Remus waking up before the disappearance of the full moon.

James and Peter were first to fall asleep and nearly passed out the moment they laid their heads down.

Jenna watched as Remus closed his eyes, wincing every now and then in pain. And it pained her too, just watching him.

Β  Β Β  Hesitantly, Jenna went towards him, still in her cat form, and laid down next to him, nuzzling by his side.

Β  Β Β  Quite immediately, Remus stopped wincing and felt calmer and so, closed his eyes, drifting to sleep with the purring cat by his side.

But the moment Jenna raised her head, she saw that the black dog had gotten off and left the Shack.

Confused, Jenna quickly got up as well, only turning back to her human form once she had exited the Whomping Willow.

There, in the short distance, she saw Sirius, back to human again. He was sitting at the top of the hill on the grass and at the edge of the Forbidden Forest, leaning against a rock as he stared up at the castle.

Jenna stood there for a few seconds, watching him, trying to decide whether to go forward or not.

Β  Β Β  But at last, gulping, she walked towards him.

"Why did you leave the Shack?" Jenna asked, causing Sirius to turn his head on her.

The edge of his lips tucked into a smile and he looked back up at the starless sky, saying, "This is my second favorite place at Hogwarts."

Jenna wanted to say wittily that this didn't answer her question. But instead, she sat down next to him and leaned against the rock.

Β  Β Β  "Then what is your first?" she asked softly, following his gaze and looking up as well.

"You'd laugh," he tried to drop the matter off casually.

"Try me." said Jenna, giving him a challenging nudge.

"Nah," Sirius grinned, shaking his head.

Β  Β Β  There was more seconds of silence as Sirius stared up at the now pink sky, and Jenna looked at him sideways.

"Why did you come out here, Sirius?" she asked once again.

Β  Β  Β  But when Sirius failed to answer once more, she continued more sternly this time,

Β  Β Β  "You've changed so much ever since we returned from Christmas break," she said earnestly. "You keep going on and off with Jones for no apparent reason. Have you even thought that you might be hurting her feelings?"

"Why do girls keep thinking that all I'm capable of is hurting people?" Sirius frowned.

"Well, that's pretty much on you, pal," Jenna said jokingly. "You got the reputation by yourself; the general knowledge is that you're a heart breaker."

Β  Β Β  There was a short pause, and thenβ€”

"Do you really think that low of me?" Sirius whispered, looking down at his hands.

Jenna's smile disappeared as she looked at his hurt expression and sighed, saying, "I don't know what to think of you, Sirius. You're so... confusing."

"I'm confusing!?" Sirius retorted, scoffing. "If I'm confusing then you're β€” then β€” you girls are complicated!"

"Girls are not complicated! Boys are just too stubborn to listen to us and understand how simple we actually are!"

"Alright, then!" said Sirius, turning towards her firmly. "Go ahead. I'm listening."

Jenna opened her mouth a few times but closed it once more, realizing that she had nothing to say.

Sighing, she leaned back against the rock. "I'm tired of arguing with you, Black. You're so freaking stubborn. And between you and me, that's saying something."

"You're right," Sirius chuckled, looking back at the sky. "We need a truce."

"Glad that you agree," Jenna grinned and then raised her hand for him to shake. "So... friends?"

Sirius's smile disappeared and his heart sank as he stared at her hand. He had no idea what made him do it, but with his jaw clenching, he took her warm hand in his and shook it gently, muttering, "Friends."
