Kalyphro Satil

Suggested by RunHuaLi

My name is Kalyphro Satil. Kaly-phro. Like cali from California. That's how you pronounce it. My father was killed in a gunfight when I was just young baby. I'm an orphan waiting for her mother to pick her up. I wait for a mother who left me twelve years ago.

"Kalyphro," Mother Selene called out of the group of girls sitting around two tables. "Someone would like to see you." I can't believe it. I'm sure my records are clean. I never violated a rule.

All the girls looked at me in concern. The only time we have a visitor is if we had done something wrong. "Um...what have I done wrong, Mother Selene?" I was scared to ask but I really didn't know what I'd done wrong.

She just smiled back at me. "Oh, nothing wrong dear. Just wait." She walked out of the dining hall and every girl even from the second table swarmed around me.

"Kal, what did you do?" Sophie asked worriedly.

I shrugged. "I didn't do anything wrong. I swear."

Mother Selene's voice rang through the hall. "Ladies, please go back to your seats. I have someone to introduce." Everyone's eyes went to Mother Selene who stepped aside to let a young lady step through. The young lady possessed a great similarity to me. Her blonde locks fell cascading down her back and her grey eyes scanning the room.

Sophie nudged my ribcage. "Kal, is that you're mom?" No, it can't be. She's too young to be my mom.

Her eyes landed on me and she smiled. "Kalyphro Satil?" She knew I was Kalyphro Satil.

Sophie stood up and asked the ridiculous question. She was the type to question everything and everyone. "Um, miss, are you Kalyphro's mom?" The others, instead of laughing, looked at the lady in expectancy.

The young lady shook her head politely. "No, dear."

Sophie had a follow up fact. "But you look so much like her."

The young lady chuckled. "Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Annabeth Chase, Kalyphro's sister." Everyone gasped, even Mother Selene. We knew Annabeth Chase was one of the greatest architects known world-wide. Her works were even displayed in Greece. SHE'S MY SISTER. "Mother told me to bring her to our place." Their place?

Sophie snorted. "Pffft, what kind of mother leaves her children all these years."

Annabeth frowned. "Don't fret. I had it worse. Did mom leave you at your dad's doorstep?" I was silent. How could she know that? I never told anyone outside this place. "Thought so. She did that to me too. But Kalyphro, I need you to come with me. This is very important."

Annabeth looked around the girls until her eyes finally landed on Nilly the girl in crutches. Nilly was a very shy person. She is one of the people who don't really socialize much. "Nills, Grover told me to tell you that you should join us. Your job is done."

Nilly's eyes went wide. "Really?" Wait, how come Annabeth knows Nilly already? I am so confused. "I can't wait to see Miles again!" She grabbed her crutches and went to me.

"Kalyphro," Annabeth said in a more panicked tone. "We have to leave NOW. Nilly, how far are they?"

Nilly took a long deep breath and frowned. "We have fifteen minutes before it arrives."

Annabeth tugged on my arm. "Don't worry, you'll see them again. We have to go. I'll explain everything on our way home." Annabeth nodded to Mother Selene who seemed to assess the situation perfectly. "Thank you for taking care of her before she came of age."

Mother Selene bowed modestly. "It was a pleasure helping. Please send my regards."

Annabeth gave a winning smile. "I'll see you again someday Selene."

Next thing I knew, I was on my way to Camp Half-Blood.

I've been in camp for three days now and it is awesome. Annabeth was my tour guide and my mentor. I look up to her whenever I need help. I met Percy and learned about their experiences. Turns out Nilly was a satyress.

It's been months since I found out I was a demigod. To be exact eleven months. I met different demigods and trained with them. I've built myself up with skills. Though it's nothing compared to the training they had during the war.

I turned thirteen around six months ago and had a big birthday party since Annabeth was the one who organized it. Everything was actually going alright. I've changed in appearance. My flat bland blonde hair was nourished by the Aphrodite kids and a blue highlight ran down in one streak. It was now in its natural wavy. From four foot eleven, I grew two inches and now I'm a proud five feet one. I had like six Camp Half-Blood t-shirt and a camouflage t-shirt. Malcolm gave me a New York Yankees cap. I've finally gotten glasses. It has big rectangular lenses. I wear black jeans which were given to me by Maria Reynon, a daughter of Hades. Apparently, she also gave me small chains to hang on my pants. So...I look edgy with the leather jacket the orphanage sent to the house of Percy. Annabeth freaked out when Percy came with the leather jacket and thought he was the one who bought it for me. Annabeth lectured Percy about not wanting me to look edgy for about an hour. Finally he clarified that the orphanage sent it.

My mom, AKA Athena, visited me during my birthday and explained all the troubles I've gone through. I'm not one to hold grudges so I forgave her. In return, she gave me a set of blank blueprints to use.

It's not the best birthday gift but I finally placed it in into use after six months. I learned I had a knack for Architecture so I've been practicing. My first set of plans were drawn on scratch paper which I keep at the bedside drawer.

I laid down my blueprints on Annabeths drawing board and started designing. Annabeth was usually in school so she allowed me to use her materials for designs and stuff, incase you're confused.

I sat there for four hours straight, completely engrossed in my work. "Kaly," Malcolm called my attention.

I turned my head to him. "Yes?"

"It's time for lunch. You been sitting there for many hours now." He stood up from his bed as my other siblings, who decided to stay the year, followed him.

I laid my pencil down and stood up in means to go outside, but my siblings all swarmed around my work criticizing it. Yeah, well, it wasn't constructive criticism. "I'll fix it later. Let's eat." My siblings followed.

I worked on that blueprint for several days and decided to ask Annabeth, who came home for today.

Annabeth walked into the cabin and walked up to me. I was working on the blueprint at the time. "Hey Kaly," She greeted me while looking at my work. "Nicely done."

I looked up in surprise and jumped up to hug her. "Annabeth! Glad you're back!"

She looked at what I was working on. "Kalyphro, those measurements look pretty familiar. Is that a design of your orphanage?" I can't believe she got it in one go. "You memorized the building perfectly!" I did memorize it. Every room, every door, how it swung.

Then a great feeling of nausea overcame me. I realized, I want to see how they are doing.

A tear fell from my cheek and Annabeth noticed it. "Kal, it's okay." There was a small time of silence until she knelt down beside me as I sat back down. "Tell you what. I'll help you create blueprints for a renovation of your orphanage then we can both go and propose it to Mother Selene. Free of charge."

I looked at her in the eyes. "Really? You would do that for me?"

"Of course! You can propose it as gratitude for taking care of you for eleven years." Annabeth stood and grabbed a chair to sit beside me.

We worked on the blueprints together. I had to rummage my memories trying to remember every single thing the girls wished and imagined we had here in this little orphanage. Around two days later, we finished up and went to visit my old orphanage a long last.

"Go get dressed," Annabeth said while she packed the blueprints. "We'll move right after I pack this."

Annabeth drove us to the orphanage in her convertible given by Piper. As soon as we arrived in front of the orphanage, Annabeth and I stepped down from the car and I heard screams from inside the orphanage. I squinted my eyes and saw Mother Selene trying to figure out what chaos was happening among them. She rushed to the door when she noticed that we might be potential adopters and a second later, the shouts became louder as she opened the door. "Girls please head back to your quarters at this instance." I saw the girls stiffen up as they saw the car in front of them. I'm not surprised they haven't noticed me.

The door closed behind Mother Selene.

I wasted no second and rushed to hug the one who took care of me.

"Mother Selene!" I greeted with joy. "It's been months!"

Mother Selene looked at me in surprise then she smiled. "My dear Kalyphro! Oh how much you've grown and matured!" Mother Selene was now an inch shorter than me. Surprisingly, she was like Percy to Jason except milder. "Hon, what have they been feeding you?" She examined my body since I'm not the scrawny no muscle girl anymore.

I laughed as Annabeth approached. She carried a very mild mannered face. "Selene!" She used her free hand to wave while she held the blueprints concealed behind her back.

Mother Selene smiled courteously at Annabeth. "Annabeth, my dear. A pleasure seeing you again. I'm sorry if this is kind of disrespectful, but I have to ask. What are you both doing here? Don't you have important demigod business?" So it turns out, Mother Selene was the mother of Miles Felder. The first demigod Nilly saved a few years back. He's one of the survivors of the Titan and Giant War. He fought as the demigod son of Ares.

Annabeth didn't answer. Instead, she nudged me to answer. I got pushed forward a bit. "Um," Mother Selene looked at me expectantly. "Actually, Mother Selene, I wanted to show you my gratitude for taking care of me like your own daughter." I crossed my arms behind me shyly.

I felt a rolled up thing being slipped into my hands. I realized that it was the blueprints.

Mother Selene looked at me in surprise. "Dear gods, child, the mere fact of seeing you come visit us here fills my heart with joy!"

I smiled sheepishly as I brought out the blueprints.

Mother Selene was confused. "What are those rolled up blueprints for?" A moment of silence went before she stumbled a bit in realization. Her hand was brought to her forehead. "Oh my gods."

Annabeth stepped up. "Kalyphro has been working on those blueprints ever since she came to camp. She started it on a little notebook she kept by her bedside drawer. The notebook of her memories here."

Mother Selene was in tears and she hugged me tightly. "The thought of you thinking about your family here is very precious. But the orphanage can barely support a fixing of a door. What more a whole building renovation? The thought is precious but I'm afraid we have to pass." A frown crossed Mother Selene's face.

Annabeth and I went to her side. "Don't worry, Mother Selene," I said reassuringly.

Annabeth spoke continuing my concern. "The whole renovation is supported by the gods. Everything to be paid will be on us."

Mother Selene looked at us in shock. "But why me?"

That question confused me too. Annabeth could've just ignored me that day. "Because," Annabeth said walking in front of both of us. "Selene, you've raised many children who are very successful in both character and discipline." Annabeth started to bring out a folder from her leather bag.

Inside the folder were a bunch of papers of orphans taken care of by Mother Selene. "Because of how you raised them, they were able to raise their own families. Your son, Miles, is the only Ares child with a polite behaviour when he entered camp." Annabeth grabbed the papers again. "Also, a big part of this is the initiative of Kalyphro to create blueprints for her orphanage. In camp, self-initiative is a big part of becoming a demigod at their best. I saw her work on it for many hours a day."

Mother Selene was so happy. "I can't wait to tell the children. My gratitude is given to you and the gods. Thank you."

Annabeth had yet another surprise. "Actually, we want to keep it a surprise. I've arranged for you guys to go on a group vacation just nearby. It's an educational trip. I was able to pull some strings with Tony Stark whom I've designed stuff for. He agreed to book a whole floor of a five star hotel just for you guys. It has complimentary breakfast, lunch, and dinner. A tour of Stark tower will be arranged too. You'll stay there for a total of five days. Construction and painting for three days, furniture for one, and final day for polishing and cleaning." Five days? That is superfast but I'm not surprised. Annabeth must be bringing Greek demigods to build.

I decided to end with a conclusion. "So, we've got everything covered. I think I can pull some strings too. I searched about who my father was and it turns out he graduated from Harvard. His profession as an airplane head engineer caught the eyes of professors from Harvard, Yale, and Oxford. I believe I can grab some keynote speakers for you guys."

Mother Selene was literally jumping up and down. "Thank you very much."

I smiled. "I'll go tell the girls. Where are they?"

"They're in their quarters. I'll call them to the dining hall."

"Um, has anyone been adopted? I mean after I left?" I asked softly.

Mother Selene just shook her head. "The numbers only increased. We're housing 65 girls already. The new ones range from ages 6-15."

We all headed in and I stayed in Mother Selene's office while she calls all the girls into the dining hall. Once they were settled, I went to the door to the dining hall with Annabeth. "Ready to see your family again?" she asked softly.

I nodded slowly.

From the outside I could hear Mother Selene telling students that they had a visitor.

The doors opened widely a bunch of gasps ran through the hall. I shyly waved hello to all of them who were in shock. Only a single voice caught everyone's attention. "Is that Kalyphro?"

I laughed sheepishly. "Yeah. It's me. This is Annabeth, if you guys forgot."

Everyone's tension became a cheerful attitude. Squeals and "Welcome Back"s chorused throughout the hall.

"Girls, settle down, Kalyphro is here to say something. She will answer questions if all of you are behaved. Raise your hands if you wish to ask a question." To my surprise, all of them raised their hands.

I pointed at a little girl whom I haven't met. She must've been a new one. "Are you Kalyphro Satil? The last girl who left the orphanage? If yes, why are you back? Big sisters said that orphans don't usually come back here."

I answered her slowly. "Yes, I am Kalyphro Satil the last girl to leave the orphanage. I'm back because I love it here. I was raised to become who I am today here. I'm not the usual girl." Everyone clapped and I chose Sophie who hadn't changed a bit.

"What happened to you?" She asked jokingly. "You're not the simple Kaly I once knew. You look like edgy Kaly with muscles."

I chuckled. "It turns out, my vision isn't so good so I was helped by mom to get myself a pair of glasses. I stopped flat ironing my hair since someone told me it will destroy my hair. They taught me how to maintain this hair. I got a blue highlight because I lost a bet to someone. I wear edgy clothes because they're the only thing in my closet that isn't uniform. I'm still simple. Muscles are earned because there's this fitness program I joined." I took a deep breath. "Guys, we can catch up but right now I have a gift for all of you. Even the new ones." This caught everyone's attention.

I turned to Annabeth. "So, it's been a long time since we've seen each other so I decided to bring a gift." Annabeth handed me a folded piece of paper. "How would all of you feel if I told you all of you we got you all a vacation trip in a five star hotel?"

"A FIVE STAR HOTEL?"

I bowed my head. "Yes, as a gratitude of being my family and sticking up for me. Pack all your valuables. All your dirty secrets." They looked at me in confusion. "I'm just kidding." After explaining the details, everyone smiled and ran up to their respective rooms.

Sophie, Annabeth, and I were the only ones left. "You are coming, right?" Sophie asked with pleading eyes.

I couldn't answer straight away. "I'm sorry, Sophie. There's just...I'm just-"Busy being a demigod and I want to supervise this. No, I NEED to supervise this. This is my project.

Annabeth pushed my answer away. "She will go. I'll arrange it-"

"NO!" I answered in a bit of anger. "I need to stay. Please understand, Sophie. I have to do something important. I just wish you'll forgive me. I have a fear going on and I can't stay with you guys because you all might get hurt."

Sophie just nodded, walking away like a cool kid. But I know, deep inside, she was hurt.

The bus that took them left and we went to work.

-building phase, painting, redecorating-

So after five days, our work was nearly done. Compared to the previous orphanage, this was a real upgrade. The building was now pretty unrecognizable. The previous three story building was now seven stories high. We bought off the abandoned buildings and continued to expand the single building. In the old building, it consisted of two floors worth of rooms, and the first floor with the showers, dining, Mother Selene's office, and the guest area. Now, the first floor resembled a hotel lobby where guests could stay in. We also expanded Mother Selene's office and the dining hall is bigger with tall double doors. The second floor to fourth floor consisted of rooms holding four people per room with two bunk beds and one personal bedside drawer each bed according to the level. Each room has a personal bathroom with a bathtub. Each floor had about ten rooms so this orphanage can house around one-hundred twenty girl comfortably. The fifth floor is a floor for the play/work area with computers. I remember a few of my friends wanted this. The sixth floor is a mini obstacle course and library with a lot of chairs and selection of books. The seventh floor is an indoor pool in a running track. The lights are all warm white. All that is missing now is the orphanage logo. We just finished cleaning the whole place and it didn't smell anything like it was newly constructed.

"Are you ready to cover this beauty?" Annabeth asked jokingly when she noticed I was staring awkwardly at the building.

I walked over to the covers we prepared so that it still has the element of surprise. Approximately three hours and they will see why I couldn't join my family in the vacation. I hooked the sheets to the hooks and hoisted it up the seven floors.

Once it was covered, Annabeth and I went to grab some lunch with Miles, Mother Selene's son, and a couple of other demigods.

We ate and laughed like idiots who finished a psycho project, which we did. They wouldn't suspect a thing.

As we went back, we saw the bus from the highway carrying students. "THEY'RE COMING!!!" I shouted and sprinted to the orphanage at once.

The bus stopped at the newly installed gates. I could hear them questioning the new gate. Finally, the gates opened and the bus rolled to a stop in front of the building. I was practically hiding between the bushes. They were all confused as they went down the bus looking at the covered structure.

"What in the world?" I heard Katrine walking towards the building.

I jumped out of the bush and sprinted towards them. "Hey guys!" I cheerily waved.

"Kalyphro?" Jessie spoke up. "I thought we won't see you for another year or so."

I shook my head. "So, just a heads up, I tricked you guys. That five star hotel wasn't a vacation. It was just to get you guys out of this orphanage." They were ALL confused. "I have a very good reason why I left you guys to enjoy yourselves."

Sophie approached. "Um...Kalyphro, what happened to you?" Oh yeah, my arm was in a sling, my face half sunburned, and my sword arm was wrapped in a bandage because of a monster attack.

"Well, this was all a sacrifice for you guys." I nodded to Miles who Mother Selene was gaping at.

"Ready?" Miles shouted. "1...2...3!!!!!" They pulled on the cover and everyone was shocked out their minds.

Even Mother Selene was shocked. "It's everything that was ever talked about during my stay in here. All that's left is the orphanage logo to be designed by us."

Then they all killed me in a hug. "I told you so. I said 'Family sticks together'. Even the new ones." I looked at Olive who is stationed here to watch those who are demigods. "Now go enjoy your home."
