3. PANIC

Louis was having a rough day.

He'd been really nauseous since he woke up that morning, and now, as he headed home from work, he was having cramps. He knew that that was normal, it meant that the uterus was expanding, and that was a good thing, because the baby needed space to grow, but it wasn't a great feeling.

So when he got home, instead of doing all of the house work he usually did when he got home, he laid down on his bed with a blanket, and he grabbed a book.

It wasn't long until Tori came home, and she went over to his room to say hi.

"Hi, baby girl" Louis smiled at her.

"Hey" Tori said as she came in, and sat at the foot of the bed "Why are you in bed? Are you sick?".

"I'm not in bed, I'm just laying on it, but not because I'm sick, I'm just tired, I had a lot of work today" Louis explained, which was sort of true "How was school today?".

"It was okay" Tori replied as she kicked off her shoes and laid on Harry's side of the bed on top of the covers, and stretched a little before she spoke again "Mummy?".

"Yes?" Louis asked, knowing Tori was only calling him mummy because she wanted something.

"Can we go shopping to London tomorrow or Sunday?" Tori requested.

"Do you need something, or do you just want new stuff?" Louis questioned.

Tori wore a uniform to school, as did most kids in the UK, and right before classes started again at the beginning of September, they had bought her a lot of new things for school.

But Louis knew she wasn't asking for school clothes, at all.

"I need new boots" Tori declared "And I also need a new winter jacket, and maybe a few jumpers... and jeans".

"So a whole new wardrobe?" Louis raised an eyebrow.

"Not a whole new wardrobe" Tori denied "But most of my winter stuff are to small for me now, so I can't wear them anymore".

"I don't know if I believe that" Louis considered.

"I'm not lying, mum" Tori insisted.

And before Louis could answer, Tori got up form them bed, walked away from the room, and then came back with her holding what seemed to be her entire closet, and she tossed it on the bed.

"What's that?" Louis asked as he sat up on the bed.

"Everything that's too small, and I'm going to prove it" Tori said determinately.

And so she started trying on jeans, jumpers and jackets, and showed Louis how the jeans were too short, or tight, or both, the sleeves on the jumpers were too short, and how a jacket only zipped halfway up her body.

"So in conclusion, I need new stuff" Tori declared as she took off a too short jumper.

"Alright, we'll go shopping for new clothes on Sunday" Louis agreed.

"But I want to go to London to get them" Tori stated "Please, mummy?".

"Okay, we can go to London" Louis agreed again, because it was no trouble to go to the city.

"And can Gemma come with us too?" Tori begged.

Tori had never called Gemma 'aunt Gemma', although technically that was what she was to her, and that was because Gemma always said that being called 'aunt' made her feel old, so she rather just be Gemma to Tori.

And to be honest, Gemma didn't act with Tori like an aunt, she was more like a cool older sister, and so Tori looked up to her, and also trusted her a lot. And although Louis had never felt like less of a mum to his daughter because he was a man and not a woman, and he was able to talk to Tori about everything, he liked that Gemma was a feminine presence in Tori's life.

And Gemma was always there for Tori when she needed her, like when Tori declared she wanted to buy a bra, Gemma had gone with them to shop for some, and she had been willing to spend an hour on the phone with Tori when the girl got her period for the first time about a year ago, because unlike Louis, she could talk to Tori about it from experience (It is important to point out that even though some men, like Louis, could bear children, they didn't get periods (which had a biological explanation, but it's not relevant right now)).

So yeah, Tori and Gemma has a great bond, which was why Tori wanted her to go shopping with them.

"We'd have to ask her" Louis replied "She might already have plans for Sunday".

"Can we call her?" Tori asked nicely.

"Sure" Louis allowed, and grabbed his phone.

He knew that on Fridays Gemma only worked until 2, so he knew he wouldn't be interrupting her at work if he called her.

"Hey, Lou" Gemma picked up, and she sounded happy.

"Hey" Louis said back "You're on speaker, and I'm with Tori, and she wants to ask you something".

"Hi, Tori, what's up, love?" Gemma asked.

"We're gonna go to London on Sunday to shop for new clothes for me, and I want you to come too" Tori explained "Please? So you can help me choose some things?".

"Of course, little one, I'd love that" Gemma replied cheerfully "We could also grab lunch and make a whole day out of it, I feel like I haven't seen any of you in over a month".

"You haven't seen us in over a month" Louis pointed out.

"I'm sorry, it's my fault, I've been a little busy" Gemma explained.

Louis heard something in Gemma's voice that made him curious, so he told Tori to take back to her room all the clothes that were too small, fold them nicely, and put them in a box so he could donate them.

And so, when Tori was gone, he took Gemma off speaker, and put the phone on his ear.

"Why have you been so busy? Did you meet someone new?" Louis asked.

"No" Gemma scoffed "Work's been a little crazy lately, and I've been hanging out a lot with a friend from work that's kind of needy".

"A guy friend?" Louis insisted.

"No, Lou" Gemma replied, and Louis could imagine her rolling her eyes "I told you I don't want to date anyone for a while".

Around the begging of the year, mid January probably, Gemma had ended her last relationship, which was with a lad called Nathan, with whom she had been for about a year, but he ended up being a dïck. And when that happened, Gemma decided she would just enjoy single life to the fullest, and had even gone on a month trip in April on her own, which she had never done before.

And because she was enjoying single life, she wasn't dating, at all, which was rare on her, but if she was happy, Louis supported her.

"It's been like 10 months since you said that, I thought that 'while' would be over by now" Louis considered.

"Why do you suddenly sound like my grandma?" Gemma questioned "Like you're telling me I'm going to die bitter and alone?".

"I didn't mean it like that" Louis laughed "I just want you to be happy, not that I think you need a man to be happy...".

"Trust me, Lou, right now, I'm the happiest that I've been in years" Gemma assured him.

"Okay" Louis accepted "I'm glad to hear that".

"Yeah" Gemma told "I need to go now, though, but text me when and where to meet on Sunday".

"I will" Louis confirmed "See you Sunday".

"Bye, Lou!" Gemma said cheerfully.

Louis ended the call, and left his phone back on the nightstand, and laid down again, suddenly feeling a bit nauseous again.

He closed his eyes, to try to make it stop, knowing that usually helped.

"What do I do with this?" Tori suddenly asked.

Louis opened his eyes, and saw Tori standing at the door holding a cardboard box, and he knew it had to have the clothes in it.

"Just leave it over there on the floor, and I'll take it to donations when I can" Louis instructed.

"Okay" Tori accepted, and left the box where Louis had pointed too "Mum, are you okay? You look weird... like really pale".

"I'm fine, honey" Louis lied "I think I just
ate something at lunch that didn't agree with my stomach".

"Can I do something?" Tori asked, her eyes worried, which was so sweet.

"No, baby girl, don't worry" Louis brushed off, knowing for a fact that there was nothing to worry about, he was just nauseous because he was pregnant, but he couldn't tell Tori that yet "I just need to sleep it off".

"Okay..." Tori agreed, but didn't seem too convinced "I'm gonna go pack my stuff for Harper's sleepover tonight".

"Alright, let me know if you need anything" Louis told her.

Tori said okay again, and left the room, and as soon as she did, Louis cuddled with his blanket, closed his eyes, and before he knew it, he fell asleep.

He woke up again, when he felt a kiss on his forehead, and when he opened his eyes, Louis saw his husband standing next to the bed.

"Hey" Louis said as he stretched his arms.

"Are you okay?" Harry frowned "Tori said you weren't feeling well?".

Louis looked around the room to see if Tori was there, and when he saw she wasn't, he explained.

"I've just been nauseous all day because of you know what" Louis explained "But I told Tori I ate something that didn't agree with my stomach".

"Hmm" Harry hummed "You look really pale".

"I bet, I'm still nauseous" Louis pouted.

"Poor baby" Harry pouted too "So you don't want to eat dinner?".

"No" Louis denied, as just the thought of food made him even more nauseous.

"Maybe a cup of tea could help?" Harry offered.

"Maybe ginger tea?".

"I'll bring you one" Harry said, and leaned down to kiss his forehead again.

Harry left the room, and Louis sighed, wanting the nausea to go away already, he had never experienced it for so long before. A few minutes later, Harry came back with a mug, and offered it to Louis, who sat up on the bed, and held it with both hands, and then took a little sip.

"Does it help?" Harry asked as he watched him for a few seconds.

"I don't know, but at least it's not making it worse" Louis admitted, and took another sip.

"I'm going to go drop off Tori at her sleepover, and when I came back I'll make dinner if you feel up to to eating something" Harry told him.

Louis had never been a big fan of allowing his daughter to go on sleepovers to strange houses, because you never knew what happened behind other people's doors. It had taken him years to even allow her to sleep over at Lizzie's, but at this point, he really trusted her family, and so Tori had slept over at her friend's house many times, and vice versa.

But when Tori came to him last week saying her new friend Harper was having a sleepover for her birthday, Louis' first instinct was to say no, which Tori didn't like to hear.

Eventually, and after a long and serious talk with his daughter about what was and wasn't okay to happen at sleepovers (which was received with a lot of rolling eyes, and 'I know, mum'), Tori was allowed to go.

"Okay, but I want to talk to her before you leave" Louis decided "Can you tell her to come?".

"Sure" Harry agreed, and left the room again.

Then Tori walked in the bedroom, she had changed out of her uniform, and looked impatient, probably to leave already.

"Remember what we talked about the other day" Louis said warningly.

"Yes, mum" Tori rolled her eyes.

"And if you want to be picked up at any time, just call either of us" Louis added.

"I know" Tori said.

"Now give me a hug" Louis asked, and raised his arms.

Tori came up to him, and he gave his daughter a hug, which she returned.

"I'll see you tomorrow" Louis told her, as he let go of the hug.

"Bye mum, feel better soon" Tori wished him.

"Thank you, baby" Louis smiled "Have fun".

And with that Tori walked away, and Harry peeked in just to say he'd be right back.

Louis finished his cup of ginger tea, and then left his on the nightstand, and took a deep breath.

He was still nauseous, but maybe it was better than earlier?

Either way, he was still having small cramps, so he decided to stay in bed, and wait for his husband to come back home and cook for him.

Harry came back some 20 minutes later, and went straight to check on Louis, and when he told him he was feeling a little better, Harry announced he would make something light for dinner, to avoid Louis getting sick.

And while Harry went to the kitchen to do that, Louis went to the bathroom, because the big mug of tea had made him want to pee.

As he went inside the bathroom, and closed the door behind him, he suddenly felt a very sharp and painful cramp, one that almost felt like... a contraction.

Louis knew what that could mean, and he quickly pulled down his pants, and right away he saw what he had feared he would see.

Blood.

And that was all he needed to see to panic.
