chapter four

Soon, the romantic songs cease, and the meatbun bowl is emptied. The musicians pack their things and leave as the other customers begin to file out. The maiden who had given us our food returns to pick up the empty meatbun bowl.
"Will that be all my lord?" She asks Zhao Yun.
"Wine?"
The maiden smiles gently. "Of course," is her response as she bows and takes the bowl away.

She comes back with two cups of red wine and places one in front of each of us. I push my cup away.
"My apologies Zhao Yun. I'm afraid I don't drink. You may have mine if you'd like," I tell him. Zhao Yun quickly chugs down the first glass and mine, and orders the handmaiden to bring him another. I can't help but feel that this isn't going to end pleasantly.
-------

"M-my lord? That's your fifth or sixth glass...are you sure you want more?" The handmaiden asks timidly. Zhao Yun hiccups and nods as he tilts ever so slightly in his seat. The girl hesitates before retrieving another glass for him. I take some gold out of my pants pocket and slam it on the wooden table.

"Thank you miss, but I don't think he'll be needing that glass," I tell her. She sighs in relief. She's probably dealt with enough drunks in her life.
"Come on Zhao Yun, it's best we leave now." I pull Zhao Yun out of his seat and he stumbles into me. Struggling to get him upright, I wrap my arms around his waist and he does the same.
"Z-Zhao Yun," I stutter, embarrassed. "What are you doing?"
"Your hair smells like cherry blossoms," he slurs, as I try to get him to stand up. I'm more than likely suffering from a full body blush now.
"Come on," I groan. I finally manage to get his arm around me, and we begin to stumble towards the doorway.
------
"You're heavy," I complain under my breath as I try to remember which way back to the palace. I stop to catch my breath under a large tree with slivers of moonlight shining through its branches. Zhao Yun uses my arm as a crutch as he turns to face me. His face is flushed pink and his pupils are dilated. A strand of hair from his bangs dangle in his eyes and he blows it away childishly before grinning cheekily at me.
"Greetings," he says, still smiling.
"You're drunk Master Zhao Yun," I reply, muscles aching. Zhao Yun frowns and leans in closer so I can feel the heat of his breath and the scent of alcohol on his tongue.
"I thought I told you-" he closes the gap and seals my lips with his. I give a muffled gasp of surprise and after months of dreaming of this moment, I'm not entirely sure what to do. I hesitantly loop my arms around his neck as he places an arm behind my head on the tree and the other on my hip bone. Zhao Yun breaks away after a second or two and stares right at me, eyes glazed over and half lidded.
"Just Zhao Yun is fine," he finishes. I'm completely at a loss for words and decide to throw his arm over my neck again.
"You're still drunk," I tell him, "and we're still not back yet." He giggles.
"I am drunk."
