Acknowledge Me

It's been a week since the night with Sherlock. I haven't seen him, and although it hurts, I know it's for the best. Enola and I have been working on several different cases, none of them are that interesting, but it keeps us busy. My mother has been spending a lot of time at her feminist meetings, so she's rarely ever home. I did finally get to tell her about what happened that night, she told me men are stupid, and the two of us spent the night reading books.

"We should go shopping."

Enola looks at me with hopeful eyes, "Please, it'll be so fun."

"Fine," I reply.

She jumps up and down happily, and the two of us make our way outside.

"Where to?" I ask.

Her eyes scan the shops along the street as we walk. "We could go to the store that sells the hideous wigs."

"Sounds fun."

Luckily, the store was only a few buildings away so we got there within a few minutes. As soon as we stepped into the store a woman greeted us.

"Good afternoon ladies. Will you be shopping for a special occasion?"

"My cousin's wedding," Enola says in a posh accent.

The lady leads us over to a wall lined with the biggest, ugliest wigs I have ever seen. Enola and I share an amused look before thanking the lady.

"Oh my God, this is the ugliest color I have ever seen," I whisper, pointing to a greenish, gray wig.

Enola coughs to hide her laugh. "You should try it on."

A lady walks over with a wig cap, "I'll help you try it on."

She shoves my hair into the cap and slowly picks up the wig. I watch the mirror in front of me as she carefully sets it on my head. I bite my lip to keep from laughing.

"It looks beautiful on you! You have the perfect facial structure for it!"

I don't know if I should be flattered or offended. The wig truly is a horrendous color, and it sways with any movement I make. Enola stands next to me with a huge grin, she's enjoying this way more than I am.

"Thank you, I'm just not sure if it's me though. I think it would look even better on you Enola."

Enola shakes her head wildly, but the woman shoves a cap on her head as well. After a few seconds she removes the wig from my head, and sets it down right on Enola's head. I let out a snort, the lady looks at me and I cough.

"Allergies."

She nods at me and turns back to Enola, "You look magnificent!"

Enola pulls a watch out of her pocket. "Oh dear, I'm afraid we've run out of time. Thank you for such a lovely experience, but we should really be going."

The woman sets the wig back down and throws our wig caps away, Enola and I both laugh loudly as we exit the store.

"I'm sure there's someone that would genuinely look amazing in that wig, but it is certainly not me," I say through a fit of laughter.

Enola grabs her stomach, "I've never laughed so hard, I think my ribs are about to crack!"

"Enola! (Y/n)!"

I turn to my left to see Tewkesbury jogging over to us, Enola's smile grows when she notices him. The love they have for each other is truly something worth envying.

"What are you two doing?" Tewkesbury asks.

"Shopping," Enola answers.

He nods, "Sounds fun. I have to go, but I'll see you two later."

Tewkesbury kisses Enola before returning to whatever building it was that he came out of. I'm sure he's doing important people stuff.

"Uh oh."

I look at Enola in confusion, "What?"

"Hi, Sherlock," Enola says through gritted teeth.

My stomach drops. Why does he always show up when I finally get over him? It's like he's doing it on purpose.

"Hello, Enola."

His eyes stay on Enola, like he's refusing to acknowledge that I'm here. But why?

"What are you doing brother?"

His eyes skip right over me as he looks around, "John and I are supposed to meet here, but he's running late. What are you doing?"

Enola looks at me cautiously. I'm glaring right at him, but he still hasn't even looked my way.

"Shopping," I answer.

"I better get going, I'll see you later, Enola."

He walks away, leaving me standing there, shaking with anger. How could he just ignore me like that?

"Unbelievable. He really ignored me, what a complete asshole!"

"I'm sure he didn't mean to, you know he doesn't say much-"

I pull away from her and follow him. She chases after me, but I'm able to lose her in the crowd. I refuse to let him get away with it, especially after what happened between us.

He turns down an alley, I wait a few seconds and turn down it as well. It's a dead-end, and he's nowhere to be seen. I look around in confusion, I know he came down here, he can't just magically disappear. So where is he?

"Why are you following me?"

I jump at the sudden noise but turn around to see Sherlock staring at me, an angry look on his face.

"Why did you ignore me?"

"Why do you care?"

I've never seen him look so angry, not even at Marcus. His angry stare makes my blood run cold, and suddenly I feel like I'm back in that warehouse.

"I don't like being ignored," I say, trying to keep my glare just as cold as his.

His eyes soften for a second, just long enough for me to notice. "I apologize. Now please stop following me, I have things to do."

"Do you remember what happened the last time we saw each other?"

His shoulders tense up, "I was drunk, I don't remember anything."

He's maintaining eye contact with me, but his left eyebrow twitches.

He's lying.

Tears build up in my eyes, I let out a shaky laugh, and smile bitterly. "Right. How could I forget?"

"I have to go now," he says, walking back to the street.

I wipe my face, angry at the tears streaming down my face. Why am I so pathetic?

"I'll see you around, Sherlock. That is, if you actually acknowledge me next time."

He pauses, I wait for him to say something. Anything. He could insult me for all I care, I just want him to acknowledge me, to make me feel like I'm not talking to a brick wall. But he doesn't. Instead, he turns down the street.

Leaving me crying in an alley alone.
