Fright In The Field

"What?" James was the first to speak, almost laughing at the idea. "We've barely been here two weeks. Bloody hell Padfoot, I know you've been bored but this seems a little drastic"

"No!" Sirius said, frustration and panic mixing in his voice "Greyback is outside and we have to get out of here!"

At this the entire group went silent and Remus was the first to move. He headed to the tents entrance and peered through it. Much as he dreaded, Sirius was right.

"Okay..." James said, his mind going straight into leader mode.

"Peter, pack everything up. Grant put the map data into my bag, it has an extension charm. Remus apparate now, think of a clear field in Devonshire. just trust me. Think abut that point on the map I showed you the other day"

Remus decided all he could do right now was trust James but he looked straight at Sirius.

"Get out of this" he whispered quietly, his worry evident to Sirius.

"I'll meet you there" Sirius said with a reassuring nod and with that Remus apparated. He saw the usual blur of scenery and appeared to be in a large field on the edge of a forest. He looked around and it all seemed deserted. He frowned and looked at the sky, it being cloudier than before. It looked like it was going to rain and he shuddered as a harsh breeze hit him. What was going on? It had been sunny just moments before.

As he pondered the mysteries of the weather he heard a sound from beside him and there appeared Peter and James and after that, Sirius and Grant, all looking extremely flushed from all of the rushing around.

"That was way too close" James said breathlessly "I forgot that werewolves can smell out their kind. He would've known Remus was there and that we'd used enchantments and he would've called one of the death eaters in no time"

The 5 of them were all out of breath and soon Grant was looking at the sky too. "I've never seen weather change so quickly in my life. And it's England so that's a big statement"

The other 4 looked at the sky too and then to Remus' utter horror, the darkness in the trees seemed to move. Not only that but 4 cloaked figures emerged from the distance, floating across the sky and down towards them.

"James" Remus said breathlessly as he saw the creatures get closer "are those..."

"Dementors" Peter squeaked from next to him, shaking in terror at the sight of the hooded monsters.

They all wanted to run but a wave of cold dread had cast over all of them and they felt tense and still. Remus' mind was screaming at him to run away but he couldn't.

The creatures seemed to consider the 5 of them and 2 of them immediately went for Sirius who was knocked to the ground out of shock of their swift movements.

"No!" Remus yelled, rushing over but that's when the 3rd one latched itself onto him, it's horrid scabbed hands gripping his shoulders.

James was fumbling for his wand, remembering their classes on Patronus' but the 4th was already beginning to suck every piece of happiness from James who went limp and fainted, dropping his wand.

Grant rushed over to Remus, trying to help but he kept going dizzy whenever he tried.

"Peter!' Grant yelled in panic "What's happening?!"

Grant, as a muggle, couldn't see the dementors but he could definitely feel them and the more he got closer to Remus the worse he felt.

Peter was shaking life a leaf and cowering on the ground, his friends all on the brink of unconsciousness.

"PETER!" Grant yelled louder this time "You need to do something!" He yelled before looking at James and seeing his unconscious figure. He ran over from Remus to him and held onto him "PETER PLEASE!"

Remus had his eyes open, hearing every single bad memory in his mind and it made him as cold as ice. He saw Grant run over to James.

'He must've seen that I was still conscious' Remus thought, knowing Grant wouldn't be able to see the horrid hooded creatures without magic and probably worried the worst for James.

Just when he felt his brain going foggy he saw the dementor withdraw, gliding menacingly over towards Sirius who was writhing on the ground, sobbing.

Remus tried to get his head to stop spinning and the cold to stop but he couldn't. He shakily reached for his wand in his pocket and tried to think of a happy memory.

'Come on Remus' he thought to himself. 'A happy memory, any happy memory. Um...when you and Sirius had your first kiss' he thought and immediately his heart lifted and he raised his wand, yelling "EXPECTO PATRONUM!"

A large ray of light erupted from his wand, a silver wolf bounding towards the 3 dementors near Sirius, making them retreat and glide away, back up into the dark sky. Next he directed the wisp of a wolf towards thew 4th dementor, still draining James. It recoiled and flew backwards, shocked by the light and disappeared into the landscape.

Remus took some deep breaths and almost fell back to the floor before he felt too strong arms catch him.

"It's okay" came Grant's voice who was keeping him steady on his feet. "What on earth just happened?" Grant asked, concern in his eyes.

"D-D-Dementors" came a tremble from Grants feet where Peter lay curled up and anxious.

"What are Dementors?" Grant asked in confusion and Peter managed to answer as he stood to his feet.

"They're cloaked dark creatures that feed on bad memories and take away any happiness a person has" Peter explained, his tiny hands shaking "You can't see them. Muggles can't see them"

"Oh my gosh" Grant said in shock before brushing Remus' hair away from his face "Oh my gosh Remus" he said before pulling him into a hug. Remus felt warmth chasing away the dreaded cold and managed to relax, but it didn't last long.

"James" Peter said rushing over to his friend who was pulling out of unconsciousness. Grant, still holding Remus in relief, looked over. Seeing James was okay he ran over and hugged him tightly.

Remus took a breath, trying to regain his senses. That's when he remembered. The 3 dementors attacking Sirius at once.

'Oh my gosh, Sirius' he thought suddenly, and the dread returned on full force.

"Sirius!" he shouted, rushing over to him. He was laid on the floor, his eyes half open, full of fear, tears steaming down his face. He was paler than usual and was whimpering. Remus couldn't bare to see him like that and pushed a strand of dark hair off of his clammy skin.

"Oh no" Remus whispered as he looked over at Grant who had James held tightly in his arms.

"James. Sirius he's...." Remus tried to form a sentence but couldn't. He just looked back at Sirius. He tried to remember what he'd been taught when he took a few medical lessons with Madame Pomphrey.

Then it hit him.

"Peter, you've got some chocolate packed right?" he asked hurriedly and Peter, who was still shaking responded in a whimper.

"Now's not really the time for a snack Moony" Peter responded.

"For goodness sake Peter check!" Remus yelled, making Peter jump. Remus didn't care. His top priority right now was helping the person he cared about most.

Peter hurried over to his rucksack, rummaged through until, to his relief, he found the box of sweets he'd packed. He threw a bar of Honeydukes chocolate over to Remus who caught it swiftly.

"Sirius..." he said softly, as the other boy continued to cry and shake on the floor "I need you to eat this" he said. Sirius seemed to understand and reached shakily to grab a square of chocolate. It was clear by his face that the chocolate had helped, as his breathing seemed to go back to normal. But it could only do so much, as Sirius was still shaking like a leaf.

"What are we going to do?" Perter asked, rushing over "The death eaters were ready for us here, they've been tracking us just like we've been tracking them"

"We'll have to find somewhere they won't expect" Remus responded, his hand still stroking Sirius' hair comfortingly.

"M-My house" Sirius stuttered, his voice quiet and broken.

Both Peter and Remus looked at eachother in shock.

"What...no they'll find us..."

"Wait Sirius has a point.." James said, grabbing himself a piece of chocolate and quickly recovering. Grant was next to James as he seemed to understand Sirius' plan.

"What do you mean?" Remus asked James with his brows furrowed.

"They expect us to run to places far from them but what if we hid right near therm. They'd never expect it" James said "Padfoot you're a bloody genius"

"Tell me something I don't know" Sirius managed to mutter, still shaking but managing a small smile.

"There's a woodland just near Grimmauld Place, a short walk away, they'd never look for us there" James explained and the other boys nodded, clearly thinking that this was the best plan of action. If the dementors had been ready for them here then it was only matter of time until Voldemort's followers showed up.

"We need to act fast" Remus said before taking another look at Sirius' pale face. He looked close to passing out.

"Padfoot, you up for apparating?" James asked his friend who just responded with a shake of his head.

"It's too risky" Peter said, knowing that the shock of the dementors was clearly quite severe "He could be splinched if he tries to apparatus in this condition"

"Alright. I'll stay here with Padfoot. Remus, Peter, take Grant to the woodland I mentioned. Me and Sirius will be there in an hour or so" James said, taking initiative and going to sit beside Sirius.

"But the death eaters....they're likely to be here any moment" Remus said, his heart rate picking up at the thought of leaving the two of them in danger.

"I have a plan. I'll take Sirius deeper into the filed and find a free spot, we'll go by broomstick, it's lucky I packed it really" James explained "I'll cast the protective enchantments and I'll be with Sirius until he's ready to apparate"

Remus just nodded as all of this was explained to him. He wanted to stay with Sirius but he knew he had to trust James with this.

"Alright" he said as Peter stood up, ready to apparate.

Before standing he squeezed Sirius' hand slightly. He stood up quickly and walked to Grant's side. Before he could think too much he apparated the both of them. Once again Grant looked a little green but he didn't vomit this time. Peter looked a little dizzy as he apparated after them, appearing at Grant's side.

"He'll be alright" Peter said when he saw the look on Remus' face.

"I know. If anyone can take care of him it's Prongs" Remus said, trying to reassure his own mind. Grant placed a hand on Remus' shoulder.

"Come on. The best thing we can do now is set up the tent" He pointed out and the other two agreed, knowing they needed to be ready for when both Sirius and James arrived later.

Remus went to the edge of the trees and cast the protective enchantments hastily, hearing the rushed voices of Grant and Peter as they set up the tent.

Eventually Remus went to help and they set it up in under 20 minutes. After that it was the most painful wait for all of them. They all were sitting outside of the tent and looking around anxiously, jumping whenever they heard any noises, hoping it was James and Sirius.

Eventually, after waiting for an hour in silence, there came a snap from behind the tent and hurried  footsteps of James, with Sirius' arm slung around his shoulder.

Sirius definitely looked better than he had done. He was still pale but he was stood up, but leaning on James for balance.

Remus counteracted the enchantments and rushed over.

"Gave him more chocolate and performed some spells, he seems better" James explained "Once he started making jokes again, I figured he was okay to apparate" James said with a teasing smile.

The three of them were so relieved to see them that they all smiled.

Grant went over to Grant Sirius' other arm and both him and James helped him into the tent, laying him down on one of the beds. Unsurprisingly, Sirius fell straight to sleep, completely exhausted from the last hours activities.

"He'll be okay right?" Grant asked and James nodded.

"He's just in shock" James explained "and the attack took more of a toll on him"

"Why?" Grant asked "I couldn't see the creatures Peter told me about but...why did they give Sirius such a bad reaction?"

"I only saw a little of what happened before I passed out" James stated with a small sigh "But I saw two of the dementors go for Sirius and then I can only guess that it ended up being 3 if Remus managed to produce a patronus"

"He was attacked by 3 of them?" Grant asked in shock "That's not gotta be easy. Why did they go for Sirius, aren't Voldemort's followers after Remus?" he asked.

"Yes but...Dementor's don't understand a target, they just go wherever they can feed the most pain from" James said, slowly reaching down to rub Sirius' arm sadly "That's why they went straight for Sirius"

"Peter told me about his brother Regulus and briefly about his family" Grant said "Can't even imagine what that's like..."

"Sirius hides his pain pretty well" James said "But those dementors unravelled him. For the first half an hour after you left, he kept sobbing and begging for his mother not to hurt him"

"I didn't know it was that bad"

"That's because he rarely talks about it" James aid before wiping away tear "Come on, let's leave him to rest"

And with that they all sat around exhausted as Remus recasted the protective enchantments over their new hiding place.
