Chapter Six

"Welcome back to detention, slackers," Mr. Bennett says, frowning as usual. "I expect good behavior, I'll be helping Mrs. Colhour with her science lab. If I hear a single sound, I'll be referring you all. Clear?"

Everyone blankly nods simultaneously.

He exits and closes the door slowly, watching us all.

When he finally leaves, everyone lets out a relieved sigh.

"The last day," Drew sighs.

"Finally," Brendan lets his head fall backwards.

"This is so stupid," Shelby complains, rolling her eyes.

"Maybe if someone hadn't gone all psychotic and screamed in the middle of class about a breakup, we wouldn't have to be here," Drew says, shrugging.

"Maybe if someone hadn't gone all psychotic and broken up with me over nothing, we wouldn't be in this situation," Missy says, shooting a look at Danny.

"Maybe if someone hadn't gone all psychotic and clingy and demanding I wouldn't have had to break up with her," Danny says with a scowl.

"Maybe if someone-"

"Shut up!" I groan, putting my head in my hands. "Just shut up."

"You can't tell anyone here what to do," Shelby crosses her arms and purses her lips. "You've got no authority here."

"Right," I narrow my eyes. "And you can't tell anyone what to do because nobody respects you so they won't listen."

"You brat!" Shelby lets her mouth fall open in shock.

"Your comments against people are so low on your end and your judgement of people's every movement is bad character. Nobody even cares to hear your opinion anymore," I tell her, feeling irritated.

"Everyone does. Right, Brendan?" Shelby looks at him with a wink.

"Actually, no. You're a real jerk sometimes," Brendan says, looking at her with a blank look.

She opens her mouth in shock.

"You used to be the nicest girl I knew. You used to invite the lonely girls to sit by us-" Drew begins.

"Like Lili-" Shelby blurts out.

"-and then all of a sudden you became a trash talking, selfish brat that only cares about herself," Drew says, looking concerned.

"I still am nice, you know nobody nicer than me," Shelby puts a hand on her hip.

"Yeah, we do."

"Really? Who?" Shelby laughs. "I have no competition."

"Lili," all three boys say at the same time.

"You guys are unbelievable," Shelby cries, standing up from her desk angrily. "I can't believe you're totally trading me out from the random girl that walks into the group and is a jerky suck up."

"If you acted differently it wouldn't have to be this way," Danny says. "Shel, sit down."

"I will not," she says, looking furious. "Not until that girl says she won't hang out with us anymore."

"First off, that girl has a name," I say, rolling my eyes. "Second off, I don't care whether or not you're standing or sitting honestly. Lay on the ground for all I care."

"You are going to be sorry," Shelby hisses before walking off. She slams the door behind her. I can hear the sound of her clacking heels down the hallway.

Mr. Bennett enters the room angrily. "Who just slammed the door?"

"Shelby just left," Danny says.

"I'll be back," Mr. Bennett says, turning around and shutting the door.

"That was exciting," Drew smirks.

"Yeah, was that a threat I heard?" I ask, looking at him.

"Aw, Shelb's threats aren't to be worried about. She's been threatening you this whole time, hast she?" He says, tilting his head.

"Yeah, I guess you're right," I nod. A part of me is still unsure. The crazy look in her eye was unmistakable.

***

'Don't forget, I'm having that movie night tonight. I hope you can be there.' -Drew

'Alright, I just need your address.'

'331 S. Floatwood Ave.' -Drew

'Thanks, I'll be there.'

'I'm glad.' -Drew

Crap, I've got to get ready...

I hurry to my stereo and press play on my iPod. I decide to sing along to it as I redo my makeup.

"When you try your best but you don't succeed, when you eat what you want but not what you need. When you're so tired but you can't sleep. Stuck in reverse. And the tears come streaming down your face, when you lose something you can't replace. When you love someone but it goes to waste, could it be worse? Lights will guide you home and ignite your bones and I will try to fix you."

I smile, pushing the hair behind my ear. I look in the mirror and almost let out a screech. Did I look like this all day? No, it must have been from my nap.

My mascara is smeared and my hair is ratted and messy. I look like a hobo.

And I feel like I'm being watched.

That's when I notice Shelby in the reflection in the mirror. She's standing outside my window.

What is she doing here?

As soon as I turn around, she's gone.

Perhaps I just imagined it.

I turn back to the mirror and get to work. I scrub off my horrible mascara mess with a makeup wipe and reapply a new layer. I brush out my hair which takes longer than suspected, then I put on a clean shirt and call it good.

"Mom, I'm leaving," I call down to the kitchen as I walk down to the front door. I open it and begin on my journey to Drew's house which happens to be only a few blocks down from my own.

Along the way, I just keep my headphones in my ears and listen to Coldplay.

"Look at the stars, look how they shine for you, and all things you do. And they were all yellow. I came along, I wrote song for you and it was called Yellow," I sing quietly, looking at the sidewalk.

"Lili?"

I look up, confused, then turn around. A car is parked beside me, and the windows are rolling down, revealing Danny and Brendan. I quickly pull the headphones out of my ears and shove them into my bag.

"Are you headed to Drew's house?" Danny asks, smiling from the passenger side.

"Oh, uh, yeah," I reply with a smile in return.

"Then hop in," Brendan says, revving the engine.

I laugh and hop into the back of the car. The music is up loud and the bass is shaking the car. The front windows are rolled down and when we start driving wind blows my hair around my face.

"So," Brendan says. "We heard you singing."

My eyes grow wide and I look at him through the mirror. He just laughs and smiles at me.

"Hey, you're good," he says. "There's no hating going on."

I feel my face go red. "Thanks."

"Have you ever performed or anything?" Danny asks, looking over his seat at me.

"Oh, no... I just sing for fun sometimes," I reply awkwardly.

"You should, you're talented," Danny says with a wink.

We pull into the driveway of a beautiful house. There is a perfectly mowed lawn and tons of different flowers guiding the path that leads up to the porch. The windows are shined clean and the porch is decorated with a couch and chairs beside it.

I follow the boys inside. There are pictures all over the walls of his family. It consists of his parents, him, and a little girl. I smile as I look at all of them.

"Hey guys!" Drew says, bro-hugging Danny and Brendan.

I look around the room in awe. Everything is so neat and clean. It seems like every inch of this place is polished.

"Hey, Lili," Drew smiles, as Danny and Brendan head to another room.

"Hi," I smile.

"Glad to see you here," he says.

It feels so empty in here for some reason. It seems like something is missing. That's when I realize what it is.

"Where are the girls?" I ask curiously.

"They said they didn't want to come..." He trails off.

"Because of me," I nod.

"Well, not exactly... Okay, yeah," he nods sadly.

"Sorry about that, it sucks that they won't hang out with you anymore because I'm here," I say, frowning. I have to accept the fact that my opinion doesn't change that they've all been friends for a long time.

"Don't worry about it," he says.

"Let's get this show on the road!" Danny calls from the other room.

"Shall we?" Drew asks with a laugh.

"Let's," I nod.

He leads me into an all new room. There's a huge couch and a flat screen TV on the wall. There's a table in front of the couch with bags of chips and candy, as well as soda cans. Danny and Brendan are already lounging on the couch.

"What movie are we watching?" Danny asks, shoving some chips into his mouth.

"I don't really know, my mom got something," Drew shrugs.

"Aw, Drew Bear lives his mama," Brendan teases, smiling.

Drew rolls his eyes and walks over behind the couch and pulls out a bag. He takes a movie out from it.

"The Haunting of Molly Hartley," he declares.

"What the heck is that?" Brendan asks, raising his eyebrows.

"Some sort of scary movie," Drew replies, reading the back of the case.

"Are you kidding me?" I exclaim, my mouth hanging open.

"What's the matter with you?" Brendan asks, smirking.

"I hate scary movies."

"Don't worry, Lil. We can cuddle and I can protect you," Drew says, smirking.

"You touch me, I kill you," I threaten, raising my eyebrows.

"Drew, shut up," Brendan says, looking bothered.

I end up on the couch between Drew and Brendan. Danny is sitting on the other side of Drew. We each hold some sort of snack, me with the jalapeño potato chips. I also have a blanket and pillow to shield me from the scary scenes and images.

Right before pressing play, though, my phone vibrates. I look down, seeing that it's a text from Shelby.

Drew, Danny, and Brendan all seem to have one as well. They're all looking at their phones too. Everyone seems curious about what Shelby sent us.

It's a video. I look at the caption.

ATTENTION STUDENT BODY: THIS IS WHAT UGLY LOSERS DO IN THEIR FREETIME. BEWARE OF A SCARRING IMAGE.

I press play in confusion, but my heart drops when I see what it is. It's me. It me when I was singing earlier, getting ready to come here. It's me with my rats nest hair and makeup smeared all over my eyes. It has me singing the entire song. It's me not even realizing what a mess I look like, but at the end I look in the mirror at myself and scream at my own horrible reflection.

I can't even look up.

I feel so embarrassed.

I just stand and start to exit the room, feeling tears well up in my eyes.

How could she do this? I didn't think she would go so low.

The tears start coming down.

I hear a voice call my name before I exit the front door.
