Ch. 23 - Gone

A/N: I know I posted way later than usual and this update is short so I'm gonna post again soon to make up for it. I actually finished it on time but forgot to publish so my apologies.

Trigger Warning:
Depictions of someone hitting someone else with a car, and throwing up. That pretty much sums up what happens in that section so you won't miss much if you skip over it. The start and end points of that section will be labeled with a warning (⚠️).
Have fun reading!

Midoriya POV

(⚠️trigger warning start⚠️)

The man with the blue hair gets into a car grinning maniacally and starts speeding down a road. Mom is crossing the street smiling. He slams into her. "MOM!" I screech.

I clutch my suffocating shirt, trying desperately to breathe as I hunch over, bawling. Her body flashes in my vision as it hits the hood of the car. The man is smiling as he drives fast enough that her body hits the windshield. He doesn't stop and she falls lifelessly onto the road.

"Midoriya, hey, it's okay." I think I'm gonna be sick.

I lurch out of the bed, almost crashing into Shinso who's now out of bed and staring at me with wide eyes. I scramble to my feet and trip before getting up again, trying to run to the bathroom. I make it just in time to empty the contents of my stomach into the toilet, still breathing heavily. Shinso stumbles into the bathroom after me, using the flashlight on his phone to see.

(⚠️trigger warning end⚠️)

"Hey... I'm here." He sounds dead tired as he plops down on the floor next to me, rubbing my back. I sob pitifully.

"She's gone." I cry. "She's... gone." This time it's more quiet.

We sit in silence for a few minutes while I clean myself up before Shinso asks a question.

"Do you, uhm, wanna talk about it?"

"There's not really anything to talk about. I just miss her... I wasn't ready." I wipe my tears, flushing the toilet.

We sit quietly for a few minutes and I think Shinso is going to fall asleep again soon.

     "Hey Shinso?" I sniff.

     "Hm?"

"Please be careful. I don't want you to leave me like her." He looks at me sleepily.

"Okay. You too, alright?" He mumbles, and I nod.

At some point we head back to bed and we don't wake up until sometime around 10am.

——————

I notice Shinso looks a little stressed as he texts on his phone, before someone calls him. He answers, sighing into the cell as someone presumably starts talking on the other side.

     "I'm fine, mom."
     "No, I can't come today."
"I told you why. Were you even reading my texts?"
"No I'm not bringing him with me. You can see me next weekend."

He hangs up but gets called back almost immediately.

     "What."
     "No, mom."
     "Nononono don't call- heyyyy, dad."
"I just can't, okay? Now's really not a good time. I told mom I would come next weekend, and you know I text every day."
     "Okay. Thank you."
"Yeah, love you guys too." He grumbles the last part, sighing when he ends the call.

"Sorry about that..." he trails off, looking at me.

"It's okay. Were those your parents?"

"Ah, yeah. I was supposed to go over there this weekend."

"So why don't you?" I ask, tilting my head.

"I'm not really supposed to leave you... wait no, that makes it sound like I'm blaming you! I really don't mind, it's kind of a pain getting there anyways, and I'd rather just stay here."

"You could take me with you?"

"Well I'm sure you don't want to meet my parents, especially after... what happened." He looked down. "Anyways, they're not very interesting, you'd get super bored, and they love to pry into people's personal lives, so it's probably not a good mix."

"I'd love to meet them, especially if it means you guys aren't fighting." I look down at the last part. I don't want to be the reason he and his parents fight. What if something happened to them and he never got to see them again? It would be my fault. Plus I'm sort of interested to see what his parents are like.

Shinso let's out a deep sigh, side-eyeing me.

"Are you sure? The train ride out there is about an hour long."

"Yeah, it's fine." I add on a nod of confirmation just to be safe.

     "Okay, I'll call them."

——————

His parents were ecstatic that he changed his mind, and really excited that he was bringing a 'friend' aka me with him. I don't think he had many friends in middle school, considering the fact that he mentioned he got beat up like me, so they're probably really excited to meet me.

I was getting situated in my wheelchair while Shinso fixed his hair in the bathroom mirror, running his fingers through it. It looked soft. I put a medical mask on and pulled my hood up because apparently I was still all over the news.

Shinso exited his bathroom and started rummaging through his closet until he found a pair of wireless headphones, pulling them out. He held down the power button until a small light appeared underneath it and heaved a sigh of relief.

He walked over and handed them to me.

"These are pretty old and I don't use them anymore but they still work well. They're pretty good at blocking out sound, so I thought you might want them for when we're outside and on the train. You can connect them to my phone and play music from them, if you want. You also don't have to use them at all. I just thought they might help."

I take them from him with my good hand, putting them around my neck.

"Thanks Shinso." I look up at him.

"It's no problem. You can keep them if you like."
