Pinky promise

I wake up in Caleb's arms. I was afraid of sleeping by myself so he let me cuddle up next to him. His arm is around me and I feel safe. Caleb looks so different when he's asleep, less angry. His face isn't fixed on a frown and his eyes look gentle. I just watch the way his fingers twitches and the way he's breathing. I like being like this even though I know it won't last long.
"Lewis..." He groans. He shifts his position and opens his eyes to look at me. I always find myself getting lost in them. "Do you think there's food downstairs? I'm hungry."
"I can go check if you want."
"No. Go back to sleep. I'll head downstairs," he says as he gets up. I hold out my hand to try to stop him from leaving.
    "Don't leave me."
"Who's acting like a child now?"
I frown and let go of him. Turning to my side just so I don't have to look at him.
"I was just joking Lewis. Come with me, okay? I won't leave you alone again."
I nod trying to believe his empty promise. Walking downstairs means we have to face everything that happened yesterday. Jacob's downstairs with Tyler, remaining with only one hand. I'm surprised they can even be in the same room right now.
"What are you doing?" Tyler asks Caleb.
"Looking for food. I'm absolutely starving right now. Could become a cannibal at this point," he spits back. He's scavenging the fridge and pulls out bottles of tequila, cereal, and whole milk. "This is like an alcoholics starter pack."
Jacob doesn't look at Caleb or me even. He just remained silent, staring at the blank TV. His eyes don't look the same anymore.
"No comment from Jacob? That's a first."
"Caleb stop it. He just lost his hand," I say in defense of Jacob.
"That's his own fault. If he hadn't been so secretive, maybe none of this would've happened."
I don't know what to say to that. "Where's Ashley?"
"Probably in her room. I can go check," Caleb says. He's almost done with his bowl of cereal. I don't know how he's able to digest anything with what's been going on. He stops eating then goes upstairs to Ashley's room.
I go towards Tyler and I whisper, "Follow me."
He nods and we both walk up to the attic together. "There's nothing here but a fridge?"
"But it's what in the fridge that's the problem. Look," I say and open the fridge. He doesn't look surprised and I wonder if he's already seen this.
"Meat?"
"I think it's human meat..."
"That's stupid. It's probably just expired and that's why it smells so funky! Like human meat is a different kind of fucked up!"
"Should we ask Jacob about it? He can't do anything to us now that he doesn't have a hand... maybe he can explain it."
"I'll go bring him."
Tyler leaves to go downstairs and I'm left alone in the attic. I feel the walls to see if there's anything new up here. I feel the walls and it feels a bit fake. Like there was a door behind it. I rip off the wallpaper and I was right. There was a door. I open the doorknob and it doesn't seem to be unlocked.
It reveals a room and inside the room is Mary. She's also on a cross. Her head is down and her lips were cut off. Her legs were cut so the blood was dripping on the floor. Her hands were hanged up by nails. I look up and I hope it's a hallucination. I walk backwards and I hear footsteps coming up the stairs. I run to find the diary I hid underneath the fridge. I grab it and go back to Mary's corpse's room. I flip through the pages of the diary giving each one a proper look. All of it was blank except the last page.

14 January

Dear diary,
This is a confession. It wasn't me. It wasn't my fault. I was confused and she kept on yelling at me. I put my arms around her and squeezed it a bit. But she was afraid so I let her go. She didn't die. She was still breathing. I checked before I left. I was so scared that she would tell everyone so I didn't stay with her.

Forgive me lord for what I have done.

I hear footsteps get closer. I'm underneath the table but I feel like I'm going to be found soon. I put my hands over my mouth trying to make as little sound as possible. My eyes dart around the entire room, waiting for them to open the door. The footsteps get quieter. I crawl out of the table still having heavy long breaths. I open the door and I see Tyler standing right in front of the door. He had been waiting for me. He never left.
"Lewis."
I try to run past him but he's blocking my exit. Causing me to fall backwards. I'm scrambling on the floor and he's getting closer.
"Lewis."
I crawl away from him trying to provide as much distance as possible. He doesn't allow that so he comes closer until I'm backed to a corner. "Tyler, why did you do that? Why did you kill her?"
"What are you talking about! I didn't kill her!"
I look at Mary's body that's still pinned on the wall. He stares at the wall too but he doesn't linger on it for too long. He puts his attention back at me.
"Why couldn't you just not go in this room? Do you know what you've done?"
"Do you know what you've done? The police is coming soon, you said it yourself."
"You don't even know half of the story. I didn't do anything! It wasn't me."
        "What about the diary?"
"What are you even talking about man! Are you backing up because of what happened with Jacob?"
"No... that wasn't your fault," I say that as I'm looking around me for stuff to defend myself with. I hear more footsteps coming up the stairs and I'm praying for a saving grace. I see Caleb from the doorframe and he approaches both of us. I expect him to say something about the body or give some sort of reaction. But he isn't even looking at the wall.
"What's going on here? Are you guys fucking or something?" Caleb asks.
"No! Bro! Lewis is actually tweaking over here!"
Caleb crouches so we can be eye level. "What's wrong?"
"Can't you see Mary's dead body?"
        "Where is it?"
"On the wall!" I look at Tyler too now. "On the wall!"
"There's nothing on the wall, Lewis."
"I can clearly see it!" They're making me feel like I'm crazy. I look at the wall again and I can still see Mary hanging there. It looks so real but they're probably right. I haven't been taking my meds.
"There's no body here. There's nothing to be afraid of," Caleb says calmly. He places his hand on my shoulder in order to try to calm me down. My breathing slows down because I know Caleb would never lie to me. He wraps his arms around me and puts me in a secure hug. This cabin is making me go crazy. It's making me question my morals and my vision. I hope the police come soon.
         "Did you find Ashley?"
"Yeah. She just needed time alone in her room. I don't think she'll be out for a while. Good news though! The snow is clearing up."
I smile because that's the first good news I've heard in a while. Both Tyler and Caleb lead me down the stairs. Jacob is still in the same position that I saw him in before. I still feel so bad for what they did to him. I left the dairy upstairs and I don't bring it up to Caleb. I don't want him to think I'm insane just incase that the words there didn't exist at all.
I let go of Caleb and walk over to sit next to Jacob. I want to find out how he's feeling. "How are you feeling?"
"Good," Jacob answers plainly. He doesn't add anymore or even complain about what was done to him by people he knew as his friends. I'm starting to think that no one here really did anything to Mary. It was probably the man that Jacob ended up shooting.
"Everyone come down!" Tyler loudly announces. Ashley comes out from her room and Caleb walks over to the living room. "I have an announcement."
"You found a way to enlarge your dick?" Caleb genuinely asks.
"No? I was able to get signal and the police said they're coming in the morning."
"What time is it even?" Ashley asks.
None of us knew how to answer because it's just been dark forever. It's hard to tell the time in the winter. Morning could be tomorrow or in the next few hours. I'm hoping for the latter.
"Why didn't you tell us that before?" Caleb says.
"Well wasn't sure if... you know," Tyler reply's nervously. "But now I'm positive that it was just the crazy man that was there. It was all a big misunderstanding and Jacob- I'm sorry for what I did. I know you could've never killed Mary."
Jacob ignores him or maybe he wasn't listening. He's just been staring at that same blank TV. I wish he would say something or lash out so I would know how exactly he's feeling. Tyler bites his lip and turns to the rest of us. "Why don't we discuss our feelings? Let it all out before the police come."
"I feel shitty and I want to go home," Ashley says.
"I hate all of you but Lewis," Caleb adds.
"I wish Mary was alive," I say finally. No one adds anything to that because that we've all been subconsciously ignoring the catalyst of our problems. I hear a voice I haven't really heard since I woke up.
"I want to die," Jacob chimes in somberly. We all turn to him with our mouths wide open. "I can't play football anymore and I won't be able to get my scholarship for college. And none of you even care, maybe Lewis does partially. That's how I feel right now."
"Jacob- I'm sorry for bringing up that idea but you did kill someone. That's a huge deal even if it was self defense- Tyler just took it more seriously than I intended!" Ashley pleads.
"Would you have got ridden of Caleb's hands if he killed someone?" He's asking Ashley but he's looking at me. "You know how it would've affected me that's why you suggested it in the first place. Now that the police is going to be here, I'm going to go to jail anyways."
Ashley looks fidgety. "No- You wouldn't have. Because we're going to lie for you, at most you'll get community service. Or maybe they won't have to find out at all. We would never let one of us go to jail."
Caleb doesn't say anything but his attention is also on me. I wonder what he has to say about every thing but as usual he doesn't let me in his thoughts. Why won't he just let me in?
"She's right! We won't let that happen to you," Tyler says and places his hand on Jacob's shoulder. He flinches. Tyler brings his hands back to himself and looks away. I wonder how we'll ever be the same after all of this. Caleb walks upstairs and I rush up to catch him.
He slams the doors on me but I just open it again. I see him on the edge of the bed and for some reason he looks angry.
"Why are you mad? We solved everything?" Except for the diary. But that's information I'm going to keep to myself as long as I can.
"Just leave me alone. Be quiet or leave."
"Stop pushing me away. Just tell me why you're upset? Please."
"What else did you see in the attic?" He asks sternly.
      "Nothing," I lie.
"Don't lie to me. What else did you see in the attic?"
      "A diary."
      "Show me."
I nod and I go up to the attic with Caleb. I go to the table where I hid the diary and I give it to him. He turns the pages until he reaches the one with the writing on it. He pauses to read.
"This must be the diary of the man who killed Mary right? The crazy guy?"
"Are you kidding me right now?"
I pause. "What do you mean?"
"It's your fucking diary Lewis. How do you not recognize your handwriting?"
